UninstallingtheProgram

4.ILLEGALUSE

YouarenottousetheSoftware,whetherdirectlyorindirectly,foranyillegalpurposeunderthelawsorordinancesofFederal,State,orlocalgovernments.ItisYoursoleresponsibilitytoknowandunderstandthelawsand/orordinancesthatgoverntheuseoftheSoftware.IntheeventthatYouviolateanyFederal,StateorlocallaworordinancebydirectorindirectuseoftheSoftware,Youshalltakefulllegalresponsibilityforsuchillegaluse.YoushallholdLicensorharmlessandwithoutfaultandotherwiseindemnifyLicensorforanydamage,costorliabilityincurredbyLicensorasaresultofanyuse,whetherornotsuchuseiswithinthescopeofthelicensesetforthherein.

5.UPDATES

IftheSoftwareisanUpdatefromanearlierrelease,younowmayusethatupdatedproductonlyinaccordancewiththisAgreement.

IftheSoftwareisanUpgradefromapreviouslyreleasedversion,youmustpossessavalidlicensecodeforthenewversioninaccordancetotheUpgradepolicyforthatparticularUpgrade.YoumaycontinuetousethepreviousversionoftheSoftwareonyourcomputerafterYoureceivetheUpgradetoassistYouinthetransitiontothenewversion,providedthat:newandthepreviousversionsareinstalledonthesamecomputer;thepreviousversionorcopiesthereofarenottransferredtoanotherpartyorcomputerunlessallcopiesoftheUpgradearealsotransferredtosuchpartyorcomputer;andYouacknowledgethatanyobligationBeLightSoftwaremayhavetosupportthepreviousversionoftheSoftwaremaybeendeduponavailabilityoftheUpdate.

6.LICENSOR'SRIGHTS

YouacknowledgeandagreethattheSoftwareandDocumentationconsistsofproprietary,publishedandunpublishedpropertyofLicensor.Youfurtheracknowledgeandagreethatallright,title,andinterestinandtotheSoftwareandDocumentationareandshallremainwithLicensor.ThislicenseconveystoYoutherighttoinstallandusetheSoftwareandDocumentationinaccordancewiththetermsofthislicense.AllrightsnotexpresslygrantedherearereservedbyBeLightSoftware.TheLicensorwillnottransmityourpersonalinformationtoanythirdpartywithoutyourexpressconsent.

7.TERMINATION

Thislicenseiseffectiveuponinstallingthesoftwareonanymachine,andshallcontinueuntilterminated.YoumayterminatethisAgreementatanytime.TheLicensormayimmediatelyterminatethisLicenseAgreementifyoubreachanyrepresentation,warranty,agreementorobligationcontainedorreferredtointhisLicenseAgreement.Upon

8.LIMITEDWARRANTY

BeLightSoftwareprovidesathirty(30)daymoney-backguaranteeontheSoftware.If,duringthisperiod,youaredissatisfiedwiththeSoftwareforanyreason,BeLightSoftwarewillrefundyourmoneyifyoureturntheSoftwareandallcopiestotheplaceofpurchasewithinthirty(30)daysofthedateoftheoriginalpurchase.THEFOREGOINGISTHESOLEANDEXCLUSIVEWARRANTYOFFEREDBYBELIGHTSOFTWARE.BELIGHTSOFTWAREDISCLAIMSALLOTHERWARRANTIES,EXPRESSORIMPLIED,INCLUDINGBUTNOTLIMITEDTOTHEIMPLIEDWARRANTIESOFMERCHANTABILITYANDFITNESSFORAPARTICULARPURPOSE,WITHREGARDTOTHELICENSEDSOFTWAREANDALLACCOMPANYINGMATERIALS.BELIGHTSOFTWAREANDITSAGENTSDONOTANDCANNOTWARRANTTHEPERFORMANCEORRESULTSYOUMAYOBTAINBYUSINGTHESOFTWARE.

TheLog

GetBackupdisplaysinformationaboutitsprogressintheLogWindow.Unlikethestatusline,whichindicatesonlythecurrentstate,theLogWindowlistsahistoryofrecordsrelatedtothecurrentandprevioussessions.Incaseofanerror,youcanscrollbacktoseewhathasbeendoneandwhichoperationhasfailed.Iftheprogramissetuptorunyourtasksautomatically,theLogWindowgivesyouaconvenientwaytofindoutiftherecenttaskswerecompletedsuccessfully.

Toworkwithbackups,makesurethatthebackuptoolisactivated.ChooseWindow>BackupVieworpressCmd-1.

TheAPFSandMacOSExtendedfilesystemsonthelocaldestinationdriveletsyouuseitsspacemoreefficientlybycreatingincrementalbackups.Ifthelocaldestinationdiskhasadifferentfilesystem,orifyouwanttosavebackupsonaremotedisk,youshouldchoosetheDiskImageoption.ItwillbediscussedinStep2.

Ifyourprojectincludesfilesthatareprotectedbytheoperatingsystem(youmaybeunawareaboutthat),youwillneedtoactivatetheUseadministratorprivilegescheckboxintheprojectsettings,andapprovethiswithadmin'spasswordinordertolettheprogramaccessthosefile.

Step1:Createanewbackupproject

ClickthePlusbuttonatthebottomoftheprojectlist.Thentypeintheprojectname.

Step2:Setupthebackup

Assoonasyouaddanewproject,theprogramwillopentheprojectsettings.Youcansetuptheprojectrightaway,ordothislater.Notethatyoumustselectthebackupdestinationdriveandfolderbeforerunningtheproject.

Alongwiththedestination,youshouldchoosewhetheryouwantyourdatatobestoredasoriginalfilesandfolders,orinsideadiskimage.Inthefirstcase,selectFoldernearthedestinationdiskname.Thisisthedefaultoption.ThetwootheroptionsareDiskImageandDiskImage(Encrypted).Tofindoutwhyyoumightwanttouseadiskimage,readtheUsingDiskImagessection.

Step3:Addfilesandfolderstotheproject

Toaddafileorfoldertotheproject,useanyoftheseways:

8-Diskimagemaximumsize.Thisoptionisavailablewhenadiskimageisselectedasacontainerforthebackup.Diskimagescanincreasetheircapacitywhenyouaddmorefiles.Youcanspecifythemaximumspacethediskimagecantake.Bydefault,themaximumissettoallavailablespaceonthedestinationdisk.Youhaveanoptiontoinputanarbitrarymaximumsize,butbeawareofthephysicalcapacityofthedestinationvolume.

9-Runtheprogramwiththeadministratorprivileges.Toactivatethisoption,youwillhavetoinputtheadministrator'spassword.

10-TheExcludesectionallowsyoutocreateasetofrulesforautomaticexclusionoffilesfromthearchive.ByselectingtheBypatterncheckbox,youcancreateyourownrule.ThisisdescribedintheExcludeFilesbythePatternsection.

11-Activateordeactivateremovingoldversionsofthebackupautomatically.

ExcludeFilesbyPattern

Afolderaddedtoyourprojectmaycontainsomefileswichyoudon'twanttobackup.TheExcludetoolcanhelpyouautomaticallyexcludesuchfiles.

Youcanchooseapredefinedfiletypeorcreateyourownpattern.Todothis,activatetheBypatternoptionandselectafileyouwanttoexclude.Forexample,ifyouselectareport.txtfileandchoosethe"thesameextension"option,all.txtfileswillbeexcluded.

Apatterncancontainafilenameorextension,orboth.Severalpatternscanbecombinedtocreateacomplexrule.

Toaddapattern:

Youcancreateapatternmanuallybytypingitintotheeditbox.Youshouldfollowtheserules:

Allpatternsconsistofthreeelements:filename,period(.),andextension.Usetheasterisksymbol(*)insteadofthefilenameorextensiontoindicateafilewithanynameoranyextension.Example:*.jpegmeans"anyfileintheJPEGformat".Don'taddanyextrasymbols(quotationmarks,spaces,commas,etc.)unlesstheyareapartofthefilenameorextension.Usethe|symbol(socalledpipe)toseparateseveralpatterns.

RemovingOldBackups

Themoretimesyourunthesamebackupproject,themoreversionsofthisbackupcanbestoredonyourdrivetakingmoreandmorespace.Theprogramcandeleteoldversionsofthebackup(let'scallthemoldbackups)inordertofreediskspacefornewones.Oldbackupstoberemovedareremovedinstantly.

Theprogramremovesoldbackupswhenyoucloseit.

Anoldbackupwillberemovedonlyifanewversionofthebackupiscreatedsuccessfully.

Therearetwowaystodefinewhichofthebackupsshouldbedeleted.ThefirstmethodletsyoudefineforhowlongtostorebackupsbyselectingtheAfteroption.Ifyouset"After2Months",theprogramwillkeepbackupscreatedwithinthetworecentmonths.Backupscreatedearlierwillbedeleted.

ThesecondmethodallowsyoutosetupthemaximumnumberofversionsstoredatthesametimeusingtheExceedingoption.Ifyouselect"Exceeding3versions",theprogramwillkeepthethreemostrecentbackups.

Inthebackupdestinationfolder,theprogramcreatesafolderdedicatedtoaparticularbackupproject.Thenameofthisfolderistheprojectnameplusanunderscoresymbolplusanalphanumericprefix.Forexample,ifyourprojectiscalled"Documents",thefoldernamecanlookasDocuments_4FFA23B7-207C-42BF-A9DB-A500023DD276.Theprefixisgeneratedautomaticallyandensuresthatprojectswiththesamenamewillnotmixuptheirbackupfolders.

Insidethebackupfolder,thereare:

gb3info.plist-anauxiliaryfileneededtostoresomeinformationrelatedtothebackup.b3_2016-02-03_17-54-28-afoldertostoreaversionofbackedupdata.Therecanbeoneormanyofsuchfolderswithdifferentdateandtimeintheirnames.Everytimeyourunabackupproject,theprogramcreatesonemorefolder,andcopiesthecurrentversionofyourfilesintoit.

Ifwelookatthelistofitemsincludedtotheproject,therearefilesandfoldersthatarenotinsideofanyotherfolder.Let'stalkaboutthemastoplevelitems.So,theprogramplaceseachtoplevelitemintoafolderwiththesamenameandauniqueprefixessuchas".wrp1",".wrp2"andsoon.Ifyougodeeperinsubfolders,thefilestructurewillbeexactlythesameasintheoriginalfolders.

Quasi-IncrementalBackupType

IfthelocaldestinationdrivehastheAPFSorMacOSExtendedfilesystem,theprogramwillcreateincrementalbackups.Thismeansthatfiles,whichhavenotbeenchangedsincethepreviousbackup,willnotbecopiedtothebackupstorageagain.Duetothis,theprogramcansavespaceonyourdestinationdrive,andmayfinisheachbackupsessionfaster.

Insteadofcopyinganunchangedfiletoanewbackup,theprogramcreatesahardlink(featureofthefilesystem)toacopyofthisfilealreadypresentinoneofpreviousbackups.So,thereisnoneedtoaddanothercopyofthefileandasaconsequencetakemorediskspaceforit.Totheuser,thehardlinkbehavesasitwasthefileitself.So,allbackupsappeartobefullbackups.

Theprogrammountsandunmountsdiskimagesautomaticallywhenitbacksuporrestoresfiles.SincediskimagesarefullysupportedbymacOS,youcanmountthemmanuallyinFinderandaccessyourfileswithoutGetBackup.

Filesandfoldersinsidethediskimagehavethesamestructureasdescribedatthebeginningofthispage.

Inordertocreateadiskimagetostoreyourbackup,youshouldselecttheDiskImageorDiskImage(Encrypted)optioninthePropertiesdialog.

Anencrypteddiskimagecanbemountedonlyifthecorrectpasswordisprovided.Ifyouwanttobackupyourdataautomatically,youshouldallowtheprogramtosavethepasswordtotheKeychain.

Animportantpropertyofdiskimagesisthemaximumsize.Whenyoucreateanewbackupproject,youshouldsetanadequatemaximumdiskimagesize.Forexample,ifyourdatatakes200MBofdiskspaceandyouwanttokeepthelast5fullbackups,thediskimagesizeshouldbeatleast1GBthatis5*200MB.Youshouldaddextra10-20%tothisestimatetobesurethatyourfileswillfit.

Theinitialsizeofanewdiskimageisabout5%ofthemaximumorless.Whenfilesareaddedtothediskimage,itbecomeslargertoaccomodatenewfiles.Thediskimagewillgrowupuntilitreachesthemaximumsize.Whenitisnotenoughspacetocompletethetask,theprogramwillofferyoutoincreasethemaximumsizeoftheexistingdiskimage,orcreateabiggerone.

Ifyoudeletesomefilesfromadiskimage,itwillnotshrinkitself.Theprogramcannotfreeunuseddiskspace.YoucanonlydothisusingthefollowingTerminalcommand:hdiutil compact

Diskcloningisoneofmanypossiblemeasuresyoucantaketopreventdataloss.Cloningduplicatesthecontentsofaparticularvolume.Iftheoriginaldiskisbootable,itsclonecanalsobootable.Thismeansthatyoucanbackupnotonlyyourdocumentsbutalsotheoperatingsystem.Theduplicateofyourdiskcanbeusedtobootyourcomputer.

CloningtheAPFSfilesystemalsoaffectsthehiddenvolumes:Preboot,RecoveryandVM.BeginningfrommacOS10.15,systemanduserdataarestoredonseparatevolumeswhichtogethercreateadiskvolumegroup.

ExternaldrivessuchasHDDorSDDarethebestmediaforabootablediskclone.

Theprocessofdiskcloningtakesquitealotoftime.Usuallyitisn'tconvenienttocloneyourdiskfrequently.Subsequentrunsofthediskcloningtakelesstimebecausetheprogramupdatesonlythemodifiedorremovedfiles.Planningyourbackupstrategy,thinkaboutacombinationofdiskcloningwithregularbackups(e.g.incrementalorfull)thatincludeonlyuserfiles.Insuchcase,backingupcanbemorefrequent(forexample,daily),anddiskcloninglessfrequent(weeklyormonthly).

Ifyouplantouseyourdiskduplicateasanemergencyworkingsystem,thediskforacloneshouldbeofsufficientcapacity.Itshouldbeabout10%largerthanallofyourfilestakeontheoriginaldisk.

RequirementsfortheDestinationVolume

Filesynchronizationisaimedtomakecopiesoffilesintwofoldersidentical.

Filesynchronizationcanbeone-wayortwo-way.Whenyoumirrorfilesfromonelocationinanother,itiscalledone-waysynchronization.Thishappenswhenyoucopynewversionsoffilestoabackuparchive.Yourworkingfolderisthesourceandthebackupfolderisthedestination.

Wetalkabouttwo-waysynchronization,whenonefoldercontainsthenewestversionofonefileandasecondfoldercontainsthelastversionofanotherfile.Bothfoldersarethesourceanddestination.Youshouldtakeintoaccountthattwo-waysynchronizationinGetBackupistwoone-waysynchronizationspreformedoneafteranother.Sincethat,ifitmakesdifferenceforyouwhichofthefolderswillbethesourcefirst,runone-waysynchronizationinonedirectionandthenintheoppositeone.

Inordertoscheduledtasksbeperformedautomatically,youshouldactivatethescheduleagentinthePreferencesdialog.Assoonasyouactivatethescheduleofanyproject,theprogramwillremindyoutoactivatethescheduleagent.Whenthetimetostartascheduledprojectcomes,theagentopenstheprogram.
