Do you have a passion for eating well, and want to encourage others to make healthier food choices? The Food Champion Programme is designed to inspire people who have a passion and enthusiasm for healthy eating to develop their own community-based and work-based projects, that will in turn encourage others to make a positive change, for a brighter future.

YOU can make the difference

We offer a two day training programme which covers:• The eatwell guide and

food groups.• Fats, sugars and salt

guidelines. • Hydration.• Food labelling.

• Dietary guidelines throughout the life course.

• Reliable nutrition resources.• Healthy eating initiatives.

Followed by post-training support including:• Mentoring for a year to put

the theory into practice.• Valuable networks.• Approved resources.• Evaluation tools.

Sonya Sault, Food Champion at Tenterden Primary Federation completed the Food Champion Training in June 2017 and became an Official Food Champion (completed 3 goals) in July 2018. The school community has an improved healthy eating policy which includes packed lunches. They have elected pupil Food Champions who encourage their peers (and staff) to follow healthy eating practices and have made healthy versions of their favourite foods. The Food Champion works with the catering manager to deliver workshops for parents/carers on topics including fussy eaters and the salt and sugar content of food and drinks. Feedback on these has been really positive:

“Amazing to hear how we can make our own much healthier alternatives.” “Good to taste different kinds of food, especially using other ingredients.”

The school meals are now so popular that parents/carers have asked for cookery lessons and recipe ideas which is now their next target. The school is encouraging other schools within their trust to get on board with the Food Champion programme to ensure their wider community is as healthy as it can be.
