On 28 September 2016, Electronics Industries Training Centre (ELITC) was invited by Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to the Manufacturing & Transport Career Fair. It was a well-executed event with about 250 enthusiastic Singaporean and Permanent Resident (PR) job seekers who came early to apply for positions put forth by 14 companies from various focus of manufacturing.

There were about 400 vacancies and about 70 job designations available. The locals in search for jobs streamed in good numbers at around 10am and started enquiring on the opportunities available to them. Some large established companies present included Baxter Healthcare, CCL Design, Celestica, Edwards Lifesciences, SMRT, Sony Electronics, LF Logistics, etc. Job seekers patiently filled up application forms given and were hopeful when making their rounds to HR staff at their tables. The event space was conducive for form-filling by candidates and interviews were conducted on the spot. The companies were able to analyze and make evaluations of those present and interested on the available roles; some successfully selected and employed, while others to await 2nd interview by relevant department heads.

The main objective for this Job Fair is to assist unemployed Singaporeans and PRs in their job search and keep unemployment rate in Singapore at its low. ELITC will continue to work closely with e2i, industry partners and organisations to provide Place and Train, Train and Place for the manufacturing climate.

Over the last three months, ELITC ran practical and theoretical IPC certifications and a related solder workshop for organizations, such as ST Electronics, Amplus Communication, Nanyang Technological University, etc. The workshop led by Mr. Steve Fribbins, a Master IPC Trainer, was on “Hand-Soldering and Rework, including High Melting Point (HMP) Soldering”. The participants went through comprehensive soldering practice using tin/ lead or lead-free solders, which also includes rework throughout the 2 days on 29 – 30 August 2016. The class covered areas of basic solder of terminals and post, through-hole components and surface mount components. The participants gained knowledge necessary to ensure quality skills and the latest acceptable workmanship requirements. On the same week, IPC/WHMA-A-620 for Cable and Harness Fabrication and Installation was conducted by Master IPC Trainer, Mr. Wayne Leong to certify participants as specialists. IPC J-STD-001 was scheduled in early October with Steve, for a main group from the university where participants learnt the requirements for soldered electrical and electronics assemblies, defining standards of materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections.
