SPARKS RAISES MONEY TO FUND PIONEERING CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH. 1 IN 30 CHILDREN IS BORN IN THE UK EVERY DAY WITH A CONDITION WHICH MAY AFFECT THEM FOR LIFE

Sparks supports clinicians and scientists who have the skills, innovation and passion to improve children’s lives forever. Since 1991, we have funded more than 270 ground-breaking research projects in over 80 hospitals, universities and research institutions across the UK and overseas. Each new project is carefully reviewed by both medical professionals and a panel of parents. This ensures that we are funding high quality science as well as investing in those projects most likely to have a benefit for children and families across the UK and beyond.

Every child matters – that’s why we support research into any medical condition affecting children’s health, from rare diseases to the most common illnesses. Anyone can support Sparks and our vital research. By donating to us monthly, attending one of our events or taking up a challenge, you can help the 1 in 30 children born in the UK with a condition which may affect them for life. The money you raise will help our researchers find more cures and treatments for children. Read this brochure to see how you can get involved and make a difference today!

Where we fund research

Sparks is an independent and national charity, we fund the best research wherever it may be based. What research we fund

Sparks funds research into a wide variety of conditions affecting children’s health. Each new project is carefully reviewed by both medical professionals and a panel of parents. This ensures that we are funding high quality science as well as investing in those projects most likely to have a benefit for children and families across the UK and beyond.

All our projects fall into one of four research areas:

Pregnancy and birth

First months of life

Infancy and early childhood

Rare diseases

GIVE TODAY

You’re the reason we can improve the health of babies, children and pregnant women. Donate today or set up a monthly gift and you can help us fund more pioneering children’s medical research. Giving to us each month is an easy and convenient way for you to support our work and also helps us plan for the future.

No gift is too small for you to make a difference.

£3 a month for a year could allow a researcher to screen one pregnant woman for lupus as part of a research study investigating a link between lupus and stillbirth. £10 a month could provide xenon gas for children like Oscar (pictured right) as part of a pioneering research project to prevent the devastating effects of brain damage occurring after oxygen deprivation at birth. It could help to develop a combined standard treatment for children like Oscar across the UK. £25 a month for a year could pay for a research assistant for 3 days to investigate the prevention of premature birth.

Help us make a difference sooner. Thank you for your support.

GIVING A TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT

Less than £10 per child each year is spent on improving children’s health – that is just 5% of the UK’s annual public and charitable spending.

A report was launched in 2012 by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health outlining the chronic underfunding in child health research in the UK. The impact of this is that treatments and cures for common and rare diseases, affecting millions of children and their families, are not being found. It means that the best and the brightest researchers are struggling to get their life changing projects off the ground.

Giving a transformational gift can help to change this. To help fund a new cutting-edge research project can provide the stepping stone necessary for that treatment or cure to be found – changing the futures of children and families forever.

“We’re lucky. Our children were born healthy and we want to give every child that same opportunity.”Transformational gift donor

A Typical Sparks Golf DayEach year, Sparks organises over 20 celebrity and corporate golf events at many of the UK’s most prestigious venues including The Berkshire, Remedy Oak, Brocket Hall and The Grove.

The emphasis is always on fun and light-hearted entertainment with an edge of healthy competition. The day usually begins with a light breakfast followed

by 18 holes of golf in the company of a Sparks celebrity completing your four-ball. After the final putt is holed, teams and celebrities retire to the 19th hole for a well-earned drink, before sitting down to enjoy a three-course meal. Celebrity entertainment, a live auction and the much anticipated prize giving ceremony rounds off the day leaving guests looking forward to the next Sparks celebrity classic.
