Welcome to Music at the MACSince long before the groundbreaking for the McAninch Arts Center, student and community musicians have explored the musical arts, honed their skills and entertained audiences at College of DuPage. From buildings M and K on west campus to off-campus sites to the McAninch Arts Center and now at the newly renovated MAC, the sounds of learning, making and listening to music have filled our classrooms and our stages.

Students and community members from throughout the district converge on the MAC every week for the joy of making music. Our singers and players range from their teens to their 80s, from those seeking degrees to those who have already earned them, to those who make music purely for the love of it.

We hope you enjoy the broad range of music we make with collaborations of eager musicians and experienced faculty in music from classical, jazz and unclassifiable styles. All of our ensembles welcome new members at the start of every semester and all of our ensembles perform at least once a semester.

Music at the MACWelcome to a place where music is performed, studied, explored and shared. In the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, students and community musicians explore the musical arts, hone their skills and entertain audiences. Walk through our hallways and you will hear the sounds of instrumental and vocal ensembles, private lessons in all instruments and voice, and music classes, as well as in performances like the one you are enjoying today.

We are thrilled to welcome our new music faculty member, Matt Shevitz, as he takes leadership of our jazz programs. He comes to us with a wealth of performance and teaching experience. He is a big part of our Music Program team and will help lead us forward with the rest of the team. Students and community members from near and far converge on the MAC every week for the joy of making music. Our population of singers and players ranges in age from single-digits to ‘infinity’, including degree-seekers, those who have already earned degrees, and, above all, those who make music purely for the love of it. DuPAGE COMMUNITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The DuPage Community Jazz Ensemble was formed in 1998 and is one of 12 choral and instrumental ensembles that make up College of DuPage Performing Arts. Its activities include dances and concert programs during the academic year as well as numerous off-campus performances, and its repertoire spans more than a century of large jazz ensemble composition, including original work from members of the ensemble. The ensemble is a frequent presence at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, has performed at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, and in 2004 was recognized by the United States House of Representatives for its work on behalf of the Armed Forces Children’s Education Fund.

Dr. Matt Shevitz has been an in demand musician in Chicago for almost 20 years. Throughout his music career, he has performed alongside such internationally renowned jazz musicians as Dick Hyman, Ignacio Berroa, Howard Levy, Frank

Capp, Randy Sandke, Ken Peplowski, Byron Stripling and Frank Wess, along with blues/roots rock guitarist Eric Lindell and Ropeadope Records artists Spare Parts. With these artists and others, Shevitz has performed at such festivals and clubs as the Jazz in the Park Festival in Milwaukee, the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, OR, the Chicago Blues Festival, Lollapalooza, the House of Blues in Chicago, and as a featured artist for Oregon Festival of American Music in Eugene, OR and the Modlin Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, VA.

Shevitz’s debut album as a bandleader, Forward Motion, was released in 2018 and has been played on radio stations around the country (including College of DuPage’s own WDCB). Stanford University’s KZSU radio station called it a “superb outing” with “several stellar solos.” Shevitz is currently writing music for his next album, which he aims to release in 2020. In addition to performing, Shevitz has been a regular contributor to DownBeat Magazine since 2009. He has published articles analyzing transcriptions of great jazz solos as well as jazz theory and effective practice habits. His articles have garnered the attention of musicians worldwide. In 2009, Shevitz received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for which he did extensive research on the great jazz saxophonist Harold “Tina” Brooks. His other degrees consist of a Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Oregon.

Grammy-nominated Victor Garcia is a musical force to be reckoned with…Examiner.com’s Neil Tesser calls him “one of the most exciting young musicians.” Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich says that he “stands

out as an ebullient soloist offering a formidable technique and a radiantly polished tone.” JazzChicago.net’s Brad Walseth regards him as a “young lion trumpeter.”

He’s as versatile as he is creative. His trumpet talent heralds his international acclaim. He sings, plays percussion, and his songwriting, arrangements and charts have led him to professorial positions at Roosevelt University,

Loyola University and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

The lineup of greats he’s performed with speaks for itself: Aretha Franklin, Arturo Sandoval, Spoon, Monty Alexander, Wynton Marsalis, Victor Manuelle, Nicholas Payton, La India, the Temptations, Steve Turre, BeBe Winans, Tito Puente, Jr., Paquito d’Rivera, Randy Brecker, Branford Marsalis, and Dr. John. Garcia has recorded on dozens of albums, three of them Grammy-nominated. He’s currently on tour with The Isley Brothers and released his debut album, The Grind/The Groove, in 2018.

• Cameras and recording devices are not allowed in the theater and are prohibited by our contracts with the artists.

• Smoking is not permitted in the theater or on campus.• For your comfort and security, all backpacks and large

bags must be checked.• Electronic pagers and patrons’ seat locations should be

given to the House Manager, who will notify you in the event of a call. Patrons wearing wristwatch alarms or carrying cellular phones are respectfully requested to turn them off while in the theater.

• Emergency phone number at College of DuPage Police Department for after-hour calls is (630) 942-2000.

• Latecomers seated at discretion of the House Manager.
