Get ready “a bailar” Saturday night with Del Castillo featuring brothers Rick and Mark, the Austinquintet will highlight songs from their fifth album, “Infinitas Rapsodias.”

In addition to writing their own albums, Del Castillo has been featured on “Kill Bill Vol. 2” and “OnceUpon a Time in Mexico.”

Rick del Castillo took a few minutes to talk about his philosophies with opening up to the ether, trafficlight songwriting and the musical bond between brothers.

Why did you and Mark start playing in 2000?What’s funny is we were working on separate

projects at the time. Ironically, he was more intoa rock band and I was producing their albums.

Mark had this real hard rock sound, butthere were a couple of songs he’d written onnylon guitar. I was working with another musi-cian on songs similar to what Del Castillo is.We were both working on the same kind ofthing peripherally, so why don’t we just seewhat happens?

Even though I toured around in the ’80s play-ing rock music, I always had my nylon guitarwith me. I’d get back to the hotel and playclassical or Spanish style. That’s always beenwith me and it’s always been with my brother. We grew up listening to my dad’s music – realMexican songs: Javier Soliz and Vicente Fer-nandez. That was always in the background.

How has your songwriting evolved over the years? In the early days, we were writing a lot of

stuff together. We both have very strong per-sonalities. Now, we tend to write our ownsongs individually, bring them to the band andcollectively work on it. There’s plenty of songsto be had because he and I are pretty prolificin writing. In the beginning, we started off col-laborating and toward the third or fourth al-bum started finding our own niche.

What’s your philosophy to put it all together? We didn’t set any goals. Our goal was to have

fun. It wasn’t “OK. We’regoing to write this style ofmusic. 1, 2, Go!” We havefive diverse musicians, sowhatever I come up with,Mike, the drummer, withall his influences, will putsomething that I neverthought of rhythmicallyand immediately changesit.

We never set out to cre-ate a certain sound. We’re not trying to be tra-ditional in any form –Latin, rock or country –we just like to write whatwe feel and thankfully thecrowd likes what we do.What should people knowbefore heading to the show

Saturday night? We played Victoria two times prior, but that was

many, many years ago.Be prepared to have fun. Come out and have a

good time.People who work all week long and just need

some kind of release find it when they hear thedance songs we play. Music truly is the universallanguage. It’s very, very evident, especially innon-English speaking countries and people arejust going, “Yeah!” We want people to come outand enjoy themselves and have a good time.

Mole sauce has always had a place in my heart. I couldnever find a place that included it on the menu in LasCruces, N.M., but when I studied abroad in Zacatecas, Mex-ico, I was in heaven. Nearly every restaurant had it on theirmenu, and I ordered it almost every time we went out.

Now that I am here in Victoria, I remember the first timeI ordered it at La Hacienda I ended up with something else.Always eager to eat, and not one to turn something away, Ihappily ate my plate and figured I could order it next time.I wasn’t going anywhere, and the restaurant wasn’t either.

When I ordered the Mexico enchiladas this time, our serv-er placed the plate in front of me and the smells broughtme back to the Zacatecas. The color of the mole was lighterthan I remembered it, but it still had the savory flavor witha little spice and sweetness. The plate was served with twopieces of avocado and a dollop of sour cream, fresh pico degallo, rice and beans. The rice was drier than I liked, but itwas seasoned well.

There were two enchiladas rolled with flour tortillas andsmothered with mole sauce and topped with Jack cheese.

Inside each enchilada, I found a sparse amount of chicken. Ihad to go digging through the sauce to find more pieces of

shredded dark and light meat, but I gave up after a while. Ifilled up on the chile con que-so Kat and I split, and I hadalready devoured half of theenchiladas.

It was good, but I would’veliked more chicken. I’ll be verydisappointed in myself if I findthe rest of the chicken in myleftovers later. Who knows.

your clocks Saturday. It’s almost Thanksgiving, haveyou started thinking about what you’re making? Sendpics of your meal to @eatseatseats or [email protected].

Once the Sunday sun starts to peepout from the blinds, my mind moves toone sole objective: brunch.

It’s the time of week when you get torecap your Saturday night misadven-tures and highlights.

But it would all be mere gossip with-out the food.

The PumpHouse Riverside Restau-rant and Bar is usually my first stop.

We try to keep our weekly Pump-House gatherings between 11 a.m. and1 p.m., but times can vary dependingon the severity of hangovers in thegroup.

Plates of silver medallion pancakes, eggs benedict and steak are passedfrom person to person.

Bottomless mimosas, bloody marysand bellinis drip from our cups.

At times, especially after an eveningendrenched with drama, a strongerprescription is needed.

Mint juleps usually do the trick forme.

For those unfamiliar with the Ken-tucky derby classic, the drink is a mixof simple syrup, mint, club soda, bour-bon whiskey and water over crush ice.

Stay away from powdered sugar –simple syrup is where it’s at.

And please keep your limes to your-self, mojitos are for after hours andtrips to Puerto Rico.

There’s enough sugar in a mint julepto make it brunch appropriate andliquor to quell the worst of headaches.

While I am definitely in love withPumpHouse brunch, a change ofscenery would be nice.

Whispers of a brunch menu atGreek’s 205 Bar on Constitution Streetcaught my ear in late October.

Co-owner and chef BlancheCharkalis said she’d love nothing morethan to have a soulful-themed menuonce the bar’s expansion, doublingtheir space, and renovations are com-plete.

“I always thought a gospel brunchwould be fun,” Charkalis said. “Withgospel singing, pianos and more ofdown home menu with grits, beignetsand all of that good southern stuff.”

When questioned about the opposingthemes of day drinking and gospel mu-sic, Charkalis said she saw no conflict.

“We would have bloody marys, mi-mosa and champagne specials,”Charkalis said. “Of course, there wouldbe drinking.”

Celebrating lives well-lived at Dia de losMuertos festival

HONORremembrance

traditionLOVE

Felicia Vela studied her altarswith a practiced eye, examining thetwo mannequins with their blackand white painted faces andbright-colored clothes.

Vela and other artists were busybuilding their interpretations of al-tars honoring loved ones for Dia delos Muertos, also known as Day ofthe Dead, a holiday celebrated inMexico on Nov. 1-2.

“A lot of people think it’s MexicanHalloween, and it’s not,” Vela said.

The day is about honoring yourloved ones, she said.

Traditionally, people gather at thegraves of their loved ones to buildaltars in their memory. The altarswill feature pictures and food, drinks and other things that theperson enjoyed in life. Children eatsugar candy skulls, and it’s achance to help make people com-fortable with death while celebrat-ing life, Vela said.

The Nave Museum has celebratedDia de los Muertos for more than adecade, but they only started hold-ing this festival a few years ago,Amy Leissner, the museum’s exec-utive director, said.

This year, the festival will includeface painting, live music, a carshow and other activities. Peopleare invited to build their own altarsbeginning at 9 a.m. Saturday in DeLeon Plaza in honor of loved onesor public figures who have died be-gin. Those attending the festivalwill have the chance to bid in asilent auction on retablo, a piece ofart created in memory of a lovedone, at the museum. A march ofremembrance will be at 11 a.m.from St. Mary’s Church to theNave with a second march set fordusk.

Altars will be set up at the NaveMuseum, but Vela and other artistsare installing a display of nontradi-tional alters at One O’ConnorPlaza.

“These are not traditional at all,”she said, gesturing to two altarsmade using mannequins with paint-ed faces that resemble the sugar

candy skull. The mannequins areplaced opposite each other, withsweeping skirts and bright-coloreddecorations clustered around them.

In the coming days, Vela willgather together things that remindher of her two grandmothers – aglass of a favorite drink, a cigarettethe same brand that the other usedto smoke placed on the altar.

She might add pictures of otherfamily members or anything elsethat will call up memories of thesetwo women who had such an im-pact on her life.

On Saturday, Vela’s family willcome to the Dia de los Muertosfestival to see her latest creation inhonor of her grandmothers.

Her grandmothers always encour-aged her creativity, believed thatshe had talent and were there forher. Vela doesn’t like to talk aboutthe days they died or even remem-ber when it happened. That’s notwhat these altars are about. Here, her creation celebrates their mem-ories, to honor how they lived notwhen they died.

“This is a healing process for me.That’s a big reason my heart is sointo this festival,” she said. “Re-membering them is a happy time. Iget to show it in a beautiful way.”

“Ralph” finds fun in the outside-the-ar-cade-game life of the charac-ters trapped in those games, forced to play hero, pawn orvillain forever. Or until thegame falls out of favor and thepower is shut off.

The cartoon-voiced John C.Reilly gives life to Ralph, a

Ralph has plenty of places to go for glory.Let’s start with a first-person shooter game ti-

tled “Hero’s Duty,” where Sgt. Calhoun (JaneLynch, hilariously over the top) leads her digitalcommandos into battle against alien “cy-bugs.”

Then there’s a place where “kitten whiskers”would be welcome, the girly Candyland of “Sug-ar Rush,” where adorable tykes, “children ofthe candycorn,” race candy-shaped go-kartsacross a candyscape. That’s where Ralph runsafoul of Vanellope, given a twinkly edge by com-ic Sarah Silverman. She’s a “glitch,” a digitallydefective character exiled from the game. She’ssmart alecky and spunky.

Somehow, she’s going to figure into Ralph’sdreams of glory. If only Raph can avoid beingdragged back to “Fix-It Felix” before the gameis unplugged. If only Vanellope can outsmartKing Candy (the demented Alan Tudyck, chan-neling the late Ed Wynn) and find a way to fitin.

ORLANDO, Fla. – There’s always been something thatscreamed “cartoon” about that potty-mouthed pixie,Sarah Silverman. Even at her most outrageous, the edgycomic’s disarming, Betty Boop/Betty Rubble voice inten-tionally softens that edge.

Silverman’s demeanor and material, in which, as theLos Angeles Times and many others have proclaimed,“almost nothing’s off limits” can be jaw-dropping.

But coming from a voice built for baby talk, she getsaway with it.

Her most outrageous stunt yet may be her first-everturn as an animated character in a Disney film. “Wreck-ItRalph,” opening Friday. We reached her in Los Angeles.

SASSY, SMART-MOUTHEDSARAH SILVERMANGOES DISNEY?

Q: Well, you’ve provided so little evidence, up tonow, that you are in fact able to curb yourself.

A: “Yeah, I know. Disney’s REALLY smart releas-ing this in an election year when I’m at my mosttippy-top polarizing self! But they’re still cool aboutit.”

Q: And there are these Sarah Silverman touch-es to her lines. A video game character with alearning disorder, she says she has “pixlexia”?

A: “I love that! I’d love to take credit for it, butthat’s in the script. We improvised and came upwith alternative lines. ‘Milk My Duds.’ But stuff like‘Why did the hero flush the toilet?’ ‘Cuz it was hisDUTY’? Straight out of the script. And I loved it.”

Q: So, is “going Disney” the sign that this is thebeginning of a mellower Sarah Silverman?

A: “This comes out sandwiched between a filthypolitical video, and a movie (“Take This Waltz”) thatI’m nude in. So, sure. I’m getting a LOT mellower.

“I’m kind of daydreaming, right now. I’m doing an-other stand-up special. It’s been seven years, andI’m focusing on that after all these interviews Dis-ney makes you do – a world tour – ‘Wreck-It Ralph’mania. That, and getting people to vote.

“I’ll know what I want to do next – a song, a show,a movie – when it comes to me, but right now, likesome voters, I’m undecided.”

Q: So, who called whom? Did you ap-proach Disney, or did they pitch you?

A: “Disney called me. They did. I have NOidea why. I was like, ‘Do they only know mefrom ‘Monk’ or ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ or some-

thing? “I was thrilled. Everybody lovesDisney. And when I thought of it, the

filthiest comedian working as I wascoming up was Eddie Murphy. Andhe’s found a home with Disney. So ifhe can do it, why not me?

“I mean, I have the perfect voicefor animation, and a great face forradio! Haha! I’ve always had a voice,a pretty distinctive one – pleasingor displeasing, depending on whoyou are. When I hear it, I’m like‘Eeeewwww, it’s so NASAL.’ Butearly on, I got a voice-over agent, and I’d go to voice-over auditionsconstantly – commercials. I nevergot booked. Never. Then, people

started hiring me for being me andI started getting all this cartoonwork

“A lot of people are asking meabout this choice, and I’m like, ‘Doyou think I’m going to sneak (ex-pletive deleted) into their car-toon? NO. I’m an adult. There’smore than one side of me and Ican certainly curb myself if theygive me a script. Come on!”

Q: Anything about Vanellopethat you could identify with, asa character?

A: “I feel so close to her. Yes,she’s a ‘Her.’ She’s an Every-Woman – obnoxious and preco-cious and annoying, at first. She’s this little tough girl. Whenpeople are tough, it’s becausethey’re protecting this fragile in-terior. She was this little reject-ed girl covering it with being atough guy. A lot of people canrelate to that. I know I could.”

TEXAS BOOKFESTIVALPROVIDESSPOOKS,MAGIC

e were in a cemetery long aftersunset, shivering, waiting for himto arrive. He appeared out of thedarkness, his fedora angled jaun-

tily, casting long shadows across his face ashe glided noiselessly forward into the yel-low lamplight. He stood there and looked atall of us. Sitting, standing, waiting. Andthen, into the silence, he began to read.

I stood among the living and the dead forthe Texas Book Festival’s Lit Crawl inAustin, listening to Mark Z. Danielewskiread aloud from his “House of Leaves,”one of the spookiest and most intricatelydesigned books I’ve ever read.

It is always a rewarding experience to hearone of your favorite authors read their book, but to hear one of the scariest tales readaloud by the writer himself in a cemetery atnight? Nothing could be more perfect.

Of course, the weekend was filled withamazing moments for readers of all types, whether it was in the house chamber of thecapitol or under the book-filled tents on thestreets.

David Levithan spoke to a packed roomSunday about writing processes with fellowauthors Michelle Hodkin and Hilary Weis-man Graham. Levithan told us, jokingly,“Eight months on the first couple chapters, then oh shit I have a deadline... fourmonths on the rest of the book.”

Hodkin said she loves Twitter, but it dis-tracts her from her work sometimes.“There are cool things on the Internet. It’sshiny.” she said.

Though Junot Diaz was unable to make it,to the dissapointment of many bookfesters(drat you Superstorm Sandy!), the weekendwas still filled with unforgettable meetingsof readers and the authors they admire.

Lines went down the block for book sign-ings, lectures filled until it was standingroom only and books flew off the tables un-til you began to hear, “We sold out,” if youweren’t quick enough.

The highlight for many seemed to be thesession with Tim O’Brien after he acceptedthe Texas Writer Award Saturday. He wasincredibly moving as he spoke about moralchoice, humanity, war and the magic of sto-rytelling itself. “Magic spills over into writ-ing. When you think of Moby Dick, Ahab,it’s illusion. It’s built sentence by sentence, word by word.” he said. And looking aroundat the packed room of awe-struck readers,I couldn’t have said it better myself. It waspure magic.
