Get Started with Prezi

Start from a template

When you create a prezi, you can choose from a number of reusable templates or a blank canvas.

When you decide to use a template, you can edit everything you see on the canvas just as if you

were creating your own prezi, including copying and pasting pre-made content from other prezis

or applications. Click here for more information on templates.

A choice of templates automatically appears every time you

create a new prezi. To access them, simply click the '+ New

Prezi' button on your prezi home page.

Once you do this, a pop-up box will appear with a choice of

templates to help you get your prezi started.

After you have selected a template, double-click or select 'Use

template' to get started. You can then add your ideas to the

template and use Prezi as normal.

If you don't want to use a template and instead create a prezi from scratch, select a 'Start a blank

Prezi'.

Navigate the canvas

Getting around your prezi canvas couldn’t be easier.

Zooming around: This is a key feature of Prezi, so naturally we made it simple. You can zoom

in and out by using your mouse’s scroll wheel or by clicking the + and - symbols on the right

hand side of your screen.

Panning: To move your prezi canvas left, right, up, or down, hold down the left button of your

mouse and then move in the direction you want to go.

To take a step back and get an overview of everything you've added so far (both in Edit and

Present mode), you can use the Home button

on the right hand side of your screen (you can find it just above the zoom + and - buttons).

Clicking the Home button before you start making a prezi will also ensure that you're starting

from the right place. Click here for more details on navigating your prezi's canvas.

Edit Mode & Present Mode

In Prezi, there are two modes: Edit Mode and Present Mode.

Check out this video to learn about the two modes:

Edit Mode:

Designed for creating and changing everything within your prezi.

Edit Mode displays all of the buttons and controls that you need for editing your prezi at the top

of the screen.

You can find the Left Sidebar for editing your prezi's path on the left-hand side.

By default, Prezi starts up in Edit Mode.

In this mode, Prezi won't zoom around when you click on objects.

You can zoom around your canvas using the buttons on the right of the screen, by clicking on

the thumbnails on the left-hand side, or by using your mouse.

Present Mode:

Page 3: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

3

Designed for presenting and for fast navigation between items in a prezi.

All the menus are automatically hidden, which gives you a clean presentation space.

You can click on objects to zoom in on them and then click empty space in the background to

zoom out.

The forward and back arrows at the bottom of the screen will take you along your prezi's path.

You can achieve the same result by pushing the left and right arrows on your keyboard.

The home and zoom buttons remain on the right-hand side. However, they will automatically

hide. To bring them back, just move your mouse toward the right-hand side of the screen.

How to move between Edit and Present modes:

By default, Prezi starts in Edit Mode. To switch to Present Mode simply click the 'Present'

button in the top-right corner of the screen.

To return to Edit Mode, you can click the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the screen. If you

can't see the pencil it's because the menu has autohidden it. Hover your mouse over the top part

of your screen and it will reappear.

You can achieve the same result by hitting the ESC key on your keyboard.

For more information about using Present mode, check out this video:

When in the Edit Mode:

Drag (hold down the left mouse button while moving the mouse) to:

Pan around your prezi canvas. Left-click and hold down the button anywhere on a blank part of

your prezi canvas and as you do, you will see a small clenched fist icon appear.

Scroll (roll your scroll wheel up or down) to:

Zoom in and out of wherever you place your cursor. This means that you can hover over an

object, roll up on your scroll wheel, and prezi will zoom in on that object. Roll down to

zoom out and achieve the opposite effect. Alternating between zooming in and out while

moving your cursor around is a good way to navigate your prezi canvas without the need for

panning. Use the zoom + and - buttons to:

Zoom in and out, This will give you exactly the same effect as using the scroll wheel. Prezi will

automatically zoom in on whatever is in the center of your screen at the time.

When in Present mode:

Click on any object to:

Zoom in to that object. Click on blocks of text, images, or frames, and Prezi will zoom in on

them. Prezi will automatically zoom, pan, or rotate so that whatever you clicked on appears

centered and fills your screen.

Click on your background to: * Zoom out. Prezi will automatically zoom out to the nearest

enclosing frame, if necessary it will also rotate and pan so that frame appears readable on your

screen. If there isn't a frame to zoom out to, Prezi will zoom to an overview - the same effect can

be achieved by selecting the Home button (the house icon above the zoom buttons) on the right-

edge of the screen.

Drag the cursor to:

Pan around your prezi canvas.

Scroll to:

Zoom in and out of wherever you place your cursor.

Use the zoom + and - buttons to: Zoom in and out.

REMEMBER: When in Present mode, the zoom menu (see picture above) will automatically

disappear to give you a clear presenting view. Bring it back by hovering your mouse over the

right edge of your screen.

Add text and images

Click anywhere and start typing to add text.

Click here for more information on using text with Prezi.

Select 'Insert' from the top-menu to start adding images from the web or your computer.

Click here for more information on adding images.

To insert an image into a prezi:

Select 'Insert' from the top menu, and then click on Image.

Page 6: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

6

If you want to select an image from your computer's hard drive, simply click 'Select files...' from

the pop-up menu that appears and browse to the location of the file you want to upload.

If you want to search the Internet for a picture, you can do it directly from Prezi without having

to open a separate browser window or tab. Simply fill your search terms into the search bar that

appears under 'Search images on the web'.

Click the globe icon to bring up further options.

We recommend selecting the check box that filters out all images that are not licensed for

commercial use, especially for public presentations.

Once you have entered your search words into the search bar, click the search icon (magnifying

glass) and the images available will appear in the sidebar

Page 7: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

7

Scroll through the images until you find one you like. You can then either double-click it or drag

and drop it onto your canvas.

After you have successfully added your image to the canvas, you can then use the

Transformation Tool to size and rotate it as you wish (or delete the image if you want to).

Prezi currently supports JPG, PNG, GIF, and SWF formats.

The maximum size for any image is 2880 by 2880 pixels (unless it's inserted as a 3D

background image). You may succeed in uploading a JPG larger than this, but this will likely

cause various problems while editing and presenting. These limitations are set by the Flash

platform and not Prezi. If you upload a JPG larger than these specifications, prezi will

prompt you to resize the image. Click 'Resize image' to reduce the image to a usable size.

For file formats other than JPG, you will need to use third party software to reduce the size

of the image file.

"Progressive" or CMYK JPEGs and the JPEG2000 format are currently not supported.

You can upload multiple files from your hard drive at any time, simply select more than one

file using the SHIFT or control keys when uploading.

Adding effects to images:

With Prezi, you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

software–allowing you to set a mood, cover up blemishes, remove redeye, and much more.

To add effects to a photo:

Click on the image you want to change while in Edit Mode and select 'Effects'.

This will bring up a new window. From here you'll be able to choose the effect you want to

use.

NOTE: Public license holders will only see the first three effect options (Enhance, Effects,

Frames). The full range of effects you see above is available only to Pro and EDU Pro

license holders.

Once you choose an effect, you can choose to implement it by clicking 'Apply'. If you decide

that you don't want to keep the new effect, click 'Cancel' at any time.

After you click 'Apply' you will see your image as it will now look. You can still cancel by

clicking the X icon in the top-right corner of the window.

You can now choose to add another effect, or if you're happy, click 'Save' to return to editing

your prezi.

Read more about the different image effects available here.

Cropping Images:

You can crop an image simply by clicking on it and selecting 'Crop Image'.

This will bring up the image cropping tool. From here you can drag anyone of the four corners to

crop your image. When you are happy click away from the image and you will see the changes

take effect.

Replacing Images:

You can switch one image for another by clicking on it when in Edit Mode and then clicking

'Replace Image'. You will then be prompted to select an image from your computer to replace

the existing image.

The second image will then occupy the exact same space as the original.

Note: It can take a few seconds for Prezi to start to import the second image. Please be patient.

Check out this video to see how you can replace and crop your images:

Get to know the Transformation Tool

In Prezi, the Transformation Tool is your best friend. Once you add anything to your canvas,

click on it once to bring up the Transformation Tool. Now you can move, size, and rotate your

content any way you like. If you add a frame to your prezi, you can click on it once to bring up

the Transformation Tool and move, scale, or rotate everything inside. Click here to learn more

about the transformation tool.

Manipulating content with Prezi is done using a simple set of controls that we like to call the

Transformation Tool.

For those that have been using Prezi for sometime, the Transformation Tool has replaced the

Transformation Zebra as the editor for all of your content.

Watch this tutorial to learn how you can edit your content with the Transformation Tool.

Using the transformation tool:

Click on any object on your Prezi canvas to bring up the Transformation Tool.

To rotate any object on your Prezi canvas, simply click on it to bring up the Transformation Tool

and then hover your mouse pointer over one of the four corners. You will see your pointer

change to an arrow icon, if you move your mouse away from the object you have selected, you

will see the straight arrow change to a curved one. This means you are ready to rotate your

object. Click and drag when you see the curved arrow icon to rotate the object.

Adding content to your favorites

With any object selected, simply click 'Favorite' to add it to your collection of saved content.

Click here for more information on reusing your best content.

Layering objects:

You can access even more options for positioning and editing your content (including layering

objects) by right-clicking on any object in your Prezi.

The Right-click Menu (Ctrl+click on Macs with default setup):

Right-click on any object to bring up these options.

Bring Forward: bring the selected object one step forward. The object that your selected

object will swap places with will fade so that you can see what effect moving your object

forward will have.

Bring to Front: bring the selected object to the front. All objects that the your selected

object will swap places with will fade.

Send Backward: send the selected object one step backward. The object that your selected

object will swap places with will fade.

Send to Back: send the selected object to the back of your prezi behind all other objects.

Turn spell-checker off: disables the spell-check function.

Start presentation: enters presentation mode.

Cut: the selected object will be removed and placed on to your computer's clipboard. You

can achieve the same result using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+x or Cmd+x on Macs.

Copy: the selected object will be copied to your computer's clipboard. You can achieve the

same result using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+c or Cmd+c on Macs.

Paste: pastes copied or cut selections from your computer's clipboard into your prezi. You

can achieve the same result using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+v or Cmd+v on Macs.

Delete: deletes the selected object. Deletion of an object in Prezi can be undone by hitting

the 'Undo' button located in the top left menu or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+z or

Cmd+z on Macs.

Frame your content

Frames are a signature part of Prezi and a great way to manage your content. Frames work like

slides and can be used to group your ideas. Use frames to create a placeholder in your prezi and

then add content to them. Frames come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and you can change the

color of them as well as their size and position. The other great thing about frames is that once

Page 14: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

14

you place one on your prezi canvas, you can move, size, and rotate it, and all the content within

your frame will move, size, and rotate too.

Creating frames:

You can also use frames to add animation to your prezis. Click here to learn more about frames,

or here for information on animations.

Frames are a key component of the Prezi experience. Use them as placeholders for your content,

or to control exactly what your audience sees. Some other well-known pieces of software may

call them "Slides", but as Prezi uses a 3D canvas, we decided to call them something else.

Creating frames: There are two ways to create frames: The simplest way is to add your frame from just above the

left sidebar.

1. Select your frame type.

2. Drag it onto the canvas.

Alternatively you can add frames from the top-menu in the shape of layouts.

1. Click on 'Insert' from the top menu and then select 'Layouts...'.

Page 15: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

15

2. After selecting 'Layouts...', a sidebar will appear allowing you to choose a either a single or

multiple frame layout. Click the thumbnail of your choice to insert that layout into your prezi.

Inserting your previous frames

You can insert frames that you used previously by selecting 'My Content' from the top-

menu.

Then click 'From Prezis'.

Page 16: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

16

From here you can see frames that you've created before. Use the search bar to look for a

specific Prezi.

Click and drag a frame onto the canvas if you want to use it again. Don't worry if your

previous Prezi had a different theme, if you insert the frame again, Prezi will automatically

adjust the content to fit your current theme.

If the frame you're looking for doesn't appear, click 'See all' to see every frame belonging to

that Prezi. Click the back arrow to go back to all your prizes.

Page 17: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

17

Moving, scaling, and rotating frames and their contents:

Moving/scaling/rotating a frame will move/scale/rotate the contents of that frame.

To remove an object from a frame, drag the object out of the frame at any time.

Hold the ALT key while dragging or clicking on a frame to move, scale, or rotate it

separately.

Double clicking on a frame will zoom in on the frame.

Invisible frames:

Use invisible frames to organize your content without the added visual of a normal frame.

This is ideal for highlighting details on a large image or block of text. This makes invisible

frames really useful if you want to present your prezi without setting a predefined path.

Invisible frames can also be added to your prezi if you click on 'Add current view' when

editing your prezi's path. This will generate an invisible frame based on the actual view that

is currently filling your screen, and it will also add a step to your path.

Page 18: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

18

Changing the color and shape of frames

You can change the type (shape) of frame by clicking the frame and selecting the frame icon that

appears. Clicking this will bring up a drop-down menu of options for you to choose from. See

the screenshot below for an example.

To change the color of a frame, you will need to edit your theme choices from the customize

sidebar on the top menu. You can find more detailed information on how to do this here.

Deleting frames

To delete a frame, simply select it and click on 'Delete' from the options that appear on the

Transformation Tool.

Deleting a frame will delete all the content within it. To delete just the frame, click the options

button and then select 'Remove frame'.

Note: to select a frame before deleting it, make sure that you are zoomed out far enough to view

the whole frame.

Making Frames the same size

The easiest way to create a frame that is the same size as an existing frame is to use the ctrl+D

(cmd+D) keyboard shortcut. This keyboard shortcut will duplicate any content. For more on

keyboard shortcuts, click here.

Customize your prezi:

Use the customize sidebar to set the colors and fonts of your prezi.

You can also create branded Prezi themes by adding your exact company colors to the wizard.

Paying users (Pro, EDU Pro, Enjoy, and EDU Enjoy license holders) can even add their own

logo to a customized theme.

Setting your prezi's path (adding a slide)

When presenting on a stage, it can sometimes help to have a narrative that carries your audience

through your prezi. With the Path tool, you can present the elements in your prezi in an order

that you set.

Check out this tutorial to learn how you can create your path:

Creating a path

In Edit Mode, zoom out until you see the objects you wish to add to your path. You can do this

quickly by selecting the home button as it appears on the right-hand side.

Click the 'Edit Path' icon on the Left Sidebar.

Click on your objects in the order you wish to present them.

A thumbnail will be added to the Left Sidebar on the left side of your screen each time that you

click on something.

To delete a path step, hover over the top-right edge of a thumbnail to bring up a red 'X' button.

Click on it to remove that path point.

Page 29: Get Started with Prezi - RCAS · Get Started with Prezi ... templates to help you get your prezi started. ... you can add effects to your images without having to download any additional

29

Drag and drop your thumbnails within the sidebar to rearrange the order of your path.

Choose 'Add current view' to capture the view currently filling your screen and add it to the

end of your path.

Select 'Clear all' to remove all path points from your narrative.

Alternatively, you can add objects to your path by clicking and dragging the relevant + icon

(you'll find these + icons beside the numbers that represent the steps of your path) to the object

you want to add to your path. These can only be seen once you have clicked on 'Edit Path' from

Present mode, you can also use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows on your keyboard, or a remote

clicker to move back and forth through your prezi path.

Depart from your path at any time by either zooming in and out, or by panning across your

canvas. Resume your path by clicking an arrow, tapping a key, or pushing the appropriate button

on your clicker.

Note: If you create a new frame within another frame that is already part of your path, the new

frame will also be added to your path.

Fade-in animation

Prezi has an animation feature that allows you to fade content into your prezi. This feature works

like a path step as each animated element will fade in as you move through the path of your

prezi. To fade in content, it must be placed within a frame.

Note: Remember that you can only animate content that is placed within a frame.

Check out this video to learn how to use fade-in animation:

To fade in elements within a frame:

1. Within Edit Mode, click the 'Edit path' button on the left-hand side of the Prezi editor.

2. Click the star symbol to the left of the frame that you want to animate.

3. Once the animation wizard has appeared, hover over the element that you want to fade in. The

element will fade as you hover your cursor over it, click to apply the fade-in effect. A number

will appear in a green star icon to the top-left of the element. That number corresponds to the

order in which that element will fade in to your frame.

4. To preview how the various elements of the frame will appear as they fade in, click the Play

triangle at the top-right of the animation wizard window.

5. If you are not happy with the order in which your elements are fading in, click the 'Reset'

button located in the top-left corner of the animation wizard window. This will remove all

animations from your chosen frame.

6. When you are happy with your animations, click the 'Done' button in the top-right corner.

Note: You can fade in multiple items of content at once if you place them in a group. However,

if you later group new content with any of the elements that you have previously animated, the

new content will not fade in with those elements.

“Borrow” from other prezis

On the Prezi Explore page you can find loads of great prezis from which you can “borrow”

content, animations or even sound effects. Reusing content in this way allows you to share your

ideas more effectively and is a great way to get started with Prezi. To use content from another

prezi, first select a reusable prezi you like from the Explore page, then click ‘Save a copy’ to

place a copy of the prezi in your own prezi library. From here, you can open the prezi and start

putting your own content into it. Alternatively, cut and paste the elements you like into one of

your own prezis.
