The four dimensions of length (the bar), width (the geogrid), depth (the soil) and the time (durabi-

lity) greatly influence construction project scope, design, product selection and expected service

life. Today, NAUE introduces you to a new four-dimensional way of understanding reinforcement

applications: the Four Dimensions of Secugrid®.

Geogrids provide vital reinfor-cement to roads (paved andunpaved), retaining walls andmechanically stabilised earth(MSE) structures. A reinforce-ment material must transferstrength appropriately to al-low these constructions to sur-vive their prolonged stressesand applied loads. When it co-mes to geogrid selection, be-cause of the complexity ofthese polymeric materials youmust consider the manufactu-ring method used in order toproperly select a material withgood strength transfer perfor-mance in the geogrid bars. That transfer strength is thekey to project success.

NAUE Secugrid® is manufactu-red with extruded flat poly-ester or polypropylene barsthat pass over rollers runningat different speeds. The rollersuniformly stretch the bars and

uniformly orientate the poly-mers into high-tenacity flatbars. With this process strong, uniform strength is achievedin all Secugrid® bars.

Strength is not the only im-portant factor for a safe rein-forcement design. A very highmodulus is just as important. This means that this productwill pick up the stresses quickly

with little or no movement inthe overlying base materials. The performance of the geo-grid at a stress/strain ratio inthe range of 2% is thereforeimportant, and here Secugrid®shows its strength. Secugrid®has excellent tensile strengths

at low elongations and de-monstrates its advantages inthe critical elongation ranges.

The result of this is a reinfor-cement bar with very stronginitial modulus, stiffness androbustness. Further, the barsare uniformly structured, crea-ting additional friction againstthe soil.

DIMENSION1Length - The bar Strength transfer

Technical advantages: High-strength, high-modulus, robust geogrid bars for sustainable performanceCustomer advantages: Safe and long-lasting stress transfer in the designQuality advantages: Superior manufacturing method for ensuring reinforcement strengthEcological advantages: Roads hold up better with less aggregate; steep walls can be built.

These Dimension 1 bars are fedinto welding equipment inwhich cross-machine directionribs are introduced and arewelded together; thus, formingthe two-dimensioned apertu-res - the openings - in the geo-grid.

The result of this is a reinfor-cement material with verystrong initial modulus, stiff-ness and aperture size (squareor rectangle) characteristicsfor multi-directional, bi-axialor uni-axial reinforcement ap-plications. Further, the materi-als can be shipped in rolls andunrolled quickly and easily atthe site. The durability of thematerial helps guard againstinstallation damage.

One of the most common usesof geogrids is for the reinfor-cement of soft and compressi-ble foundation soils for pavedand unpaved roads. Thoughthis application is common,

not all geogrids are appro-priate for this function. Key tosuccess is specifying a productwith a true biaxial strength, the ability to improve radialinterlocking in the base aggre-gate and stress transferthrough the aggregate to pre-vent pumping, the mixing offines, rutting and road erosion.

When inserted into a basecourse layer, the stiffness andstrength of NAUE Secugrid® in-terlocks with the aggregate,

restraining the aggregate la-terally. As loads are applied tothe road (or rail) systemabove, the tensile forces aretransmitted from the aggre-gate to the geogrid. These la-teral stresses and strains arethen reduced.

As the aggregate interlocks la-terally with the geogrid and

the stress is trans-ferred to the rein-forcement, the riskof vertical defor-

mation (rut depth) at the roadsurface is greatly reduced. Theintegrity of the installation isprotected in all directions.

DIMENSION2Width - The geogrid Radial Interlocking

Technical advantages: True biaxial strength and radial stress transfer and interlockingCustomer advantages: Reduced long-term maintenance issues. Ease of installationQuality advantages: Round the clock quality control, ISO 9001 audited, CE marking Ecological advantages: Optimised Secugrid® for soil reinforcement reduces transport needs (and costs) to site

As noted in Dimensions 1 and2, the strength and stresstransfer characteristics of Se-cugrid® greatly improve theperformance of aggregate basecourse in roads and, additio-nally, provide long-term creep-resistance for critical applica-tions such as mechanicallystabilised earth (MSE) wall de-signs. Two other benefits mustbe considered alongside Di-

mensions 1 and 2: a reducedneed for a aggregate basecourse and the maximisationof space through allowingsteeper MSE designs.

The interaction between Se-cugrid® and base aggregate in-creases the elastic modulus. Thus, the stiffness or load dis-tribution capacity of the basecourse is improved. As such, less aggregate is needed in thebase course - a fact that canequate to significant savings.Aggregate is heavy and expen-sive to transport. Site prepara-

tion can be time-consumingtoo. Geogrid reinforcement de-creases the dependency onbase course thickness while si-multaneously extending instal-

lation service life and reducinglong-term maintenance needsthrough a better performingconstruction.

In developed areas where qua-lity building sites and spaceare tough to come by or whereproject economy and space arean issue, steeper MSE wallsmay be achieved with stronggeogrid reinforcement. The

high-strength, low-elon-gation stress/strain cha-racteristics of Secugrid®provide veneer stabilisa-tion and enable taller

walls even on severe anglessuch as 1:1.5 (H:V), whetherit’s a mountain road, a com-mercial development, or a mu-nicipal solid waste (MSW) land-

fill. Steeper constructions alsolimit overall site disturbance, which is a well-appreciatedand recognised environmentalbenefit.

DIMENSION3 Depth - The soil Less aggregate or steeper walls

Technical advantages: High stress/strain characteri-stic provides multiple benefits- better distribution of tensileforces, longer service lives, im-proved long-term project eco-nomy, and much more

Customer advantages: Reduced dependency on aggre-gate, less long-term mainten-ance, maximised site use

Quality advantages: The widerange of quality products madeof polypropylene or polyesterwith strengths up to 400 kN/m

Ecological advantages: Maxi-mising space use is a projectcharacteristic that improvessustainability. Reducing mate-rial shipments (e.g., heavy ag-gregate) is also an importantenvironmental benefit»Step over the edge and

test the new dimension.«

There are many sayings abouttime, and nearly all of themstress the importance of ac-ting now what saves later. Thisis very much true in regards tothe use of geogrid reinforce-ment. Not only does it makepreviously impossible designspossible (such as the scale onwhich modern MSE walls canbe built), it greatly improvesthe longevity of standard andunique constructions.

The other three dimensions ofSecugrid® underscore the vitalcharacteristics that make thisfourth dimension possible:strength transfer in the geo-grid bars due to Secugrid’s ma-

nufacturing process; the radialinterlocking of aggregate andthe transfer of stresses to thegeogrid; and the reduced needfor aggregate in base courseand the strength to constructsteeper walls.

These material characteristicsimprove both immediate andlong-term issues of time: fasterinstallations without sacrifi-cing quality; significantly slowed degradation and reflec-tive-cracking of roads (mea -ning, less maintenance overtime); reduced site distur-bance; and greater longevitydue to the higher internal

strength of these constructi-ons. All of the advantages ofSecugrid® in this dimensionlead to project cost savingsand better performance, todayand in the future.

DIMENSION4 Time - durabilitySustainability

Technical advantages: Long-term resistance and performance of Secugrid® soil reinforcement geogridsCustomer advantages: Quicker installation in the project, longer lasting designQuality advantages: Excellent and durable long-term creep performanceEcological advantages: Long-lasting designs, reducing carbon footprint and minimising use of finite resources

Secugrid® geogrids are produced with a new dimension of manufacturing technology. The reinforce-

ment element is a highly-oriented polypropylene or polyester bar that is uniformly extruded and

drawn to achieve a high modulus and high strength at low elongations. This is combined with the

NAUE-patented welding technology to provide a structurally sound and stable geogrid. Secugrid® is

used mainly for base reinforcement, mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) wall construction including

veneer stabilisation, the segmental retaining wall (SRW) market, embankment reinforcement, load

transfer platforms over pile caps and other soil reinforcement applications. Biaxial geogrids are

primarily used in base reinforcement applications, while uniaxial geogrids are often used in the other

markets.
