Get to Know Tanner Siegfort! Drummer, for DFLC’s Praise & Worship Band

Most people at DFLC know me as the Worship Band Drummer who occasionally fills in for Nick Jensen on guitar and vocals. Let me tell you how I got to where I am today.

My Dad, also a drummer, started me on a full drum kit at the age of 5. My Dad taught me until I was seven years old, when I started working with a private instructor. In school, I was part of Jazz and Advanced Band. In Junior High, I started playing with my first band. Not much is usually expected from a first band, but funny enough, I played some of the biggest venues in the Valley with that first band. I was fortunate enough to be presented with great opportunities at a young age, all of which really helped me grow into the player I am today. I continued playing in bands, and with more incredible musicians and song writers. Each pro-ject I was a part of helped me grow and mature as a drummer.

I always knew through grade school that music would be my career. Having very supportive parents was a plus. Right out of high school, I joined a Country Cover Band and started making a living playing music. Now, at 23, I can proudly say I make a living doing what I absolutely love - music, and only music. It's been a hard road at times, but I always push through with the Lord's help.

Aside from playing gigs, and at church weekly, I have my own entertainment booking company, and teach lessons. I work hard, I stay busy, and I pray a lot. God has helped me with my career in more ways than I could ask. Anytime I was stressed-out and felt like giving up, God gave me hope. To this day, when I have those feelings, I pray and God answers and helps me. He is so good to me and sometimes I feel I don't deserve it, but I sure am grateful.

I am engaged to my gorgeous high school sweetheart, Megan, to whom I've been with for almost 8 years. We are getting married late 2018, and couldn't be more excited. At home, I have a 6 month old puppy named Arlo, and he’s just like a child, but with more hair.

God has blessed me and my family in ways I couldn't imagine, and from that my faith is strong. If you haven't attended an 11 am service, I encourage you to come hear the other wonderful musicians I play with in our Worship Band.

Pastor Mark McCrory

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

The most famous songs in the world usually have a story to tell. Those who know the words of “The Star Spangled Banner” likely know the story of Francis Scott Key and his view of Fort McHenry. Sometimes the stories are surprising. For example, most baseball fans who love to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” would be surprised to know that the song’s composers had never actually been to a ballgame.

What’s the story of our most famous Lutheran song? Most think our battle hymn of the Reformation was written in Wittenberg in the Autumn of 1527 or perhaps 1528. If we take a close look at Luther’s composition, we begin to understand why Lutherans have loved singing it for 500 years.

GOD’S PEOPLE SING The story of “A Mighty Fortress” begins in 1521. At the Wartburg, Luther began the task of reconnecting God’s people to God’s Word. He wanted the people to read God’s Word for themselves. Most could not read the Latin version, so he began a Bible translation in the qui-et of the castle. His desire to help people learn God’s Word for themselves would also move him to author the Small and Large Catechisms in 1529.

Luther also wanted God’s people to sing God’s Word for themselves, so he began a hymnal project. The first Lutheran hymnal appeared in 1524 with only eight hymns. Luther wrote four of them. To get the people involved in worship, Luther wanted to reform the Sunday order of service as well. To him, this effort helped people learn and remember the truths of Scripture. Luther had asserted that all God’s people were priests, with unique roles to play in the daily and weekly proclamation of the gospel.

They needed psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to sing (Colossians 3:16). Luther published a Deutsche Messe—a German service—in 1526. Luther’s service was a model of steady com-promise and pastoral concern. Many of the old chants and rituals were kept, while many new tunes and prayers were included. And at the heart of the service were hymns for the people to sing. The Lutheran Reformation brought the congregation’s song to life.

For the first time in centuries, all God’s people would participate in singing. This was a new role for them, and Luther knew that they would need a variety of texts, both old and new, and a variety of tunes, both familiar and unfamiliar, to understand their new role. So, as the catalog of hymns kept growing, a rich variety of ideas and styles was put to use.

Often Luther simply updated the ancient chant tunes that the people had heard for decades. Luther’s revision of “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest” is not drastically different than the Latin chant that preceded it. At other times, Luther simply borrowed tunes that people knew. His Christmas hymn “From Heaven Above to Earth I Come” was set to a tune used by visiting town musicians: “Ich komm’ aus fremden Landen her.” And even when Luther composed a new tune, he used repetitive Barform patterns to help his people learn the songs. (Note: Bar-form is a melodic pattern: AAB. Not a tavern tune!)

A SONG TO TEACH GOD’S TRUTH At first glance, it seems that Luther’s hymn is a simple setting of Psalm 46, “God is our refuge and strength.” The psalm was Israel’s song of thanks for the marvelous deeds of God. God guarded and protected His people. Though believers may be inundated with conflict and per-secution, God still preserves them with the steady stream of His promises. As the political and religious climate continued to deteriorate in Germany throughout 1525 and 1526, it seemed that God’s persecuted people of the Reformation era would need a similar song to sing.

In last Quarter’s Newsletter, we noted that DFLC’s General Offer-ings for 2017 were slightly ahead of those received in 2016. How-ever, concerns were raised as to what might happen during the Summer months, where we historically see large drops in Offer-ings, while the DFLC ministry programs must continue on.

So let’s look at how DFLC made it through the Summer months from a Total Income and Total Expense standpoint. This chart shows that we went into the Summer with income covering the expenses, but we have now entered September with a significant operating deficit of $62,700.

Since it is very important that we continue with our mission of “Connecting People to Jesus,” and not cut back on our ministry programs at this time of excitement, enthusiasm, and growth at DFLC, let’s investigate what opportunities might be available to offset this deficit going forward.

An analysis of the General Offerings from the DFLC Members and Regular Attenders over the first eight months of this year reveals that only 70% of them provide an offering each month. Further analysis shows that only 20% of them contribute an average of 72% of the total offerings received each month. This begs the question of what about the 30% who do not contribute each month?

Remember that we are all Stewards over all the blessings and gifts the Lord has so bountifully given us, with the expectation that we will return a portion of them to Him for His services and mission. This means that all of us should be returning to Him a portion of the treasures He has given us on a regular basis, not just 70% of us as the DFLC data shows. Each of us is expected to return a portion of our treasure as we are able, as the Lord says in Luke 12:48b, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demand-ed; and from the one who has been entrusted much, much more will be asked.”

It is recognized that not everyone is at the same level of maturity as Stewards. Therefore, there is a challenge for each of us at whatever level we are.

As a beginning giver, try setting aside a small amount you can afford and present it to the Lord regularly as you worship Him.

As a sporadic giver, try becoming more regular and con-sistent in your giving.

As a consistent giver and experiencing the joys that come from freely giving, try increasing the amount you are giving, recognizing the greater joy you will receive in return.

As a tithing giver, try expanding your gifts as well, recogniz-ing the many ministry needs that exist in our world and the increased joy that comes from helping others.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 summarizes our challenge very well, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparing-ly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you will need, you will abound in every good work.”

DFLC has tools to aid you in becoming a consistent giver through the use of the WeShare program available to you on the DFLC website at http://www.dflc.org/give.html, where you can sign up for automatic contributions made on a recurring basis, or one time basis, that you determine, directly from your checking or savings account or through your credit or debit card.

Pray that all of us become faithful Stewards and consistent con-tributors to the Lord’s work here at DFLC to carry out the mis-sions He has placed in front of us, so that we all may share in the joy and blessings that come from seeing the Lord’s work multiply among us and our community as we “Connect People to Jesus.”

I am always available to assist you in any questions you might have regarding WeShare.

DFLC Financial Summary Report

August 2017

There is some good news that Offerings, through August, are up 6% from a year ago but are 15% behind Plan for this year. This has reduced the cash in the General Fund by $23,000 compared to August 31 last year. Expenses are right in line with the Plan, thus offerings are the challenge.

As Alan indicated in his Stewardship Report, there is now an op-portunity for our Congregation to step up and move our giving to the planned level.

Prayer Shawl By Kim Minneci

Fall has finally arrived, and hopefully cooler weather is just around the corner. Along with the change of seasons are some changes in Prayer Shawl Ministry. Barb Antosik, one of the original co-founders of Prayer Shawl, has left us to go back to Michigan to be near her children and grandchildren. She has given so much to this ministry over the past eight and-a-half years…enthusiasm, knitting lessons, inspiration, fixed countless knitting mistakes for others, has knit dozens of shawls herself, and has helped distribute over 500 prayer shawls. We thank her for her dedication and love for our ministry. We will miss her. Stepping in to fill Barb’s shoes is Barbara-Ann Gulotta; she will help distribute and mail shawls to those in need, and will also have supplies if any-one is in need of yarn, etc.

August 27 was our most recent event, with over 50 Prayer Shawls on the Altar for a blessing by Pastor Mark. What a wonderful day. If you know of a friend or family member who is in need of a little extra comfort, please contact Kim or Barbara-Ann and we will make sure that a shawl is sent their way.

We are always looking to welcome new stitchers to our group. If you knit or crochet, or if you would like to learn, we would love to have you join us. We meet year-round on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Join us from 9-10:30 in the west Conference Room of the Fellow-ship Hall for a “working” get-together. Meeting attendance is not mandatory; if you can’t make it or would prefer to stitch at home, just let us know; we will be happy to pro-vide you with yarn and patterns.

It seems a bit early, but since this is now a Quarterly News-letter, I would like to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, and a joyous Christmas. Be sure to invite someone to church to celebrate the birth of our Lord and all things DFLC…Worship Services, Bible Study, Choirs, Cantatas, Christmas by Candlelight, Advent Services, Children’s Christ-mas Program, and so much more. Meeting Schedule for 4th Qtr. is as follows: October: 11 & 25 November: 8 & 29 December: 13 & 27

By Ruth Ann Rauscher

In the casual, relaxed atmosphere of a

home, or a meeting room at church, meet with your fellow Christian brothers and sisters while you have Bible Study and prayer. Grow in your love for the Lord in faith, fellowship and in the “Lutheran” tradi-tion of food, both for the body and the soul.

During the meeting time, most of the groups see a video to start the session and use a Study Guide that accompanies the video for discussion. The group’s prayer requests follow the discussion, then a time for fellowship and refreshments. Time commitment for the whole meeting varies from 1 ½ to 2 hours.

Now is a good time to join or start-up a Life Group. There are 6 groups presently meeting monthly.

Callies Group Meets 2nd Thursday, 7-9 pm DFLC (Sunset Rm.) 480.595.2833

Crueger Group Meets 2nd Tuesday, Time & place to be an-nounced. 480.248.6282

McCrory Group Meets 2nd Thursday, 6:30 pm at McCrory’s 480.779.8644

Rauscher Group Meets 2nd Saturday, 3 pm at Rauscher’s 480.257.7749

Rime Group Meets 2nd Sunday, 12:30 pm at Rime’s 480.515.1655

Wendel Group Meets 2nd Saturday, 6 pm at Wendel’s 480.488.6282

By their very nature, the groups stay small enough for ac-commodation in homes or the small meeting rooms at church. The groups choose the time and frequency of their meetings.

The need for leaders for new groups is growing. Leadership guidance is provided. Prayerfully ask yourself if this is a way you can serve the Lord. He will equip you to serve if you are willing. We want to double the number of Life Groups this Fall and early next year.

Life Groups are a Christian tradition, going back to the origi-nal meetings of the early church in homes of Jesus’ follow-ers as recorded in the New Testament, when Christians rap-idly grew in great numbers despite severe persecution.

DFLC Life Groups give us an opportunity to share our Chris-tian faith and grow in Christ in a very meaningful, loving way.

Please call me with any questions, comments or to volun-teer to become a Life Group Leader, 480.257.7749.

Feeding the Flock For three weeks in July, the Service Ministry Team, along with members of our congregation, collected microwavable and non -perishable food for our homeless Veterans in Phoenix. These men and women fought gallantly for our country and now find themselves with no home or family. Everyone helped in some way. Some gave their time, some brought food, others donated money. In total, 165 pounds of food and $450 was collected. The food was taken to the Veterans Outreach Center in down-town Phoenix. It will go a long way in helping these men and women receive a hot meal.

The money, along with a gift card from Thrivent Financial will be put toward the purchase a new refrigerator for the Veterans Outreach Center. This will enable the center to keep dairy items such as milk, butter, jelly etc.

Thank you from your Service Ministry Team and from all the men and women you helped feed. Hunger is ongoing. No one should ever go to sleep hungry.

Barbara-Ann Gulotta, Service Ministry Team

Please congratulate Jack Chase, as he will be inducted into the Veterans Hall of Fame, on October 27!

The times during which the hymn was written had become a battleground not only for God’s people but for God’s Word itself. Both Luther and the peasants to whom he preached faced persecution and pressure.

Thus, Luther’s hymn tells a story beyond the bounds of Psalm 46. The hymn traces the story of salvation from beginning to end in each stanza. Martin Luther’s sermons of song enjoyed popularity far beyond the weekly service and the church sanctuary. Hymns like “A Mighty Fortress” were part of the daily devotional life in believer’s homes. Eventually Christians would go on to travel the world, carrying Luther’s Bible, Catechism, and hymnal with them as they went; and, in each, they would remember and sing the central truths of God’s Word.

As we face difficulties in our day, and as DFLC faces challenges in connecting this generation to Jesus, remember God’s people

always rely on His power in their trials and troubles! His power is made available in His Word that we hear, read, and sing every

Sunday!

Worship Notes: We had a wonderful turnout at our Ministry Fair in September, and I am so thankful to all of you who helped prepare our Worship Ministry table. I am also very thankful to those of you who signed up to volunteer! As you know, on November 5 we will be adding a service in the 9:45 am timeslot and we will need ministry helpers. If you plan on attending that service, please consider volunteer-ing to Usher, Read the Scripture, help with Communion distribution, or run the A/V slides. Usually, we have many youth volunteers to help; however, at 9:45 am, they will be attending Sunday school, so we need many adult volunteers. Thank you for helping to make this new service successful. God has great plans in store for DFLC and we are the many parts of the church body that make His plans come to fruition. God bless and Happy Holidays!

Darren Hansen Youth Minister We are coming off of an exciting spirit-filled Summer that included a life-changing trip for several of our youth to Camp Lutherhaven in Idaho, and concluded this past weekend with a SOAR retreat to Show Low where we had amazing Bible studies, phenomenal stargazing, fun games, and grew closer together as a Youth Group family. The months ahead include a family movie night and support for the Children’s Ministry mini lock-in (Sat. Nov. 18), a few gathering events for the fun-of-it including an Escape the Room event on October 14, helping construct an outdoor worship area the last weekend in October, FOCUS 17 for the high school the weekend of November 3-5, as well as helping and supporting our congregation with activities associated with Christmas. In the early part of 2018, we would like to take the entire SOAR group on a Winter Retreat similar to what we just did in Show Low.

SOAR has changed its regular twice a month midweek meetings in an effort to serve more of our youth. We are now meeting every Tuesday in the Youth Room from 6 - 7:30 pm! This coincides with the adult Bible Study led by Pastor Mark. Additionally, our Sunday morning time together is go-ing to focus on God’s answers to the daily struggles and big questions faced by our youth. We are changing to this topical approach and moving away from a standardized curriculum to give us needed flexibility. If you have a student in 6 through 12 grade, please encourage them to join us every Sunday and Tuesday as we explore God’s will for their life! National Youth Gathering 2019 The next National Youth Gathering will be in Minneapolis,

Minnesota, July 11 – 15. The Gathering theme is Real. Pre-

sent. God. The theme is rooted in Psalm 46. The registration

process doesn’t begin until September of 2018. We will be

registering immediately in order to get a hotel closest to the

new convention center and stadium. In the coming months,

you will see our youth beginning to fundraise for their regis-

tration, hotel, and airline ticket costs. If anyone would like to

donate specifically to help our youth attend NYG 2019, please

talk to Darren Hansen. From personal experience, these

Gatherings change the way we look at our relationship with

God in an overwhelming/positive way!

A Peek At Preschool

Preschool started off with a bang as the children and parents quickly got into a routine. “Back to Church Sunday” was a great way for all our young families to see the many things we have going on at DFLC.

On September 11, our Chapel Ser-vice included First Responders, Military that were present in NYC helping on 9-11, Police Officers and Pastor Mark as he serves the DPS in his Chaplin uniform. It was a very moving Chapel Service and the children had many questions.

As we head into Fall and the cooler weather, we look forward to some of our special events. The children will be singing at the 11 am service, on October 15. Then we will have our “Thanksgiving Lunch” in November, and finishing the year with our precious Christmas pro-gram in December. We are so thankful, grateful, and blessed, to have such wonderful families here at DFLP. Thank you for supporting our Preschool and spreading the love of Jesus!

Joyfully in His Service, Martha

YOUTH RETREAT What an incredible retreat in Show Low!

Fun, food, games, Bible Studies, Team Building,

Supporting one another!

It was a great weekend!

Keri Barnes/Karen Bird

Sunday School is off to a great start and our Awesome Redeemed Kids (ARK) are all “hands on deck” as we sing fun songs, learn exciting Bible stories and have fun worshiping our amazing God. We begin in our class-rooms at 9:45, join the others at 10:05 for a Christian growth opening and then back to the classroom for the meat of the lesson for the day. Pick-up for the children is at 10:50, just in time to get to the 11:00 worship service in the sanctuary (in case you missed the early service). And if you want to be in on the fun with our kids, it is not too late to volunteer. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Keri Barnes or Ka-ren Bird at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in the ARK.

DFLC MOMENTS Join the Women of DFLC

for the 3rd Annual

Christmas by Candlelight

Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 7 pm

Christmas by Candlelight is an evening that celebrates the coming of Christ.

It is an opportunity for women of all ages

to set aside the hustle and bustle of holiday preparation to reflect on Jesus and His birth while sharing beautifully

decorated tables, a dessert, a special program and…

the glow of candles and friends!

Interested in joining the Planning Team or hosting a table, contact Patty Wendel at

[email protected] or 817.307.0206.

When is it? Tuesday, December 5, 2017, 7 pm in the DFLC Sanctuary & Fellowship Hall. What is it? Ladies have been sponsoring Christmas by Candlelight in churches throughout

our Synod for over 25 years. Christmas by Candlelight is an opportunity for women of all ages to set aside the hustle and bustle of holiday preparation to reflect on Jesus and His birth while also sharing beautifully decorated tables, a dessert, special programing including the DFLC music ministry and…the glow of candles and friends!

Who can attend? Our event is offered to ladies high-school age and older. You do not need to be

a member of Desert Foothills Lutheran Church to attend. Take the opportunity to invite family, friends and neighbors. This is a great opportunity to invite la-dies who do not have a church home and would be blessed by the Christmas message. Because of assigned seating, tickets are required for the event.

Who can host? How does that work? Anybody willing and able! As a hostess, you set a round table (8 seats, includ-

ing your seat) and provide dessert for those at your table. You may do this on your own or share the responsibility with a friend. You may invite ladies to sit at your table, or allow the seats to be filled via the sign-up process. Fancy ta-blecloths and Christmas dishes, wonderful! Paper products and plastic silver-ware, that’s fine, too. See Hostess Guidelines for more details. Hostesses can set their tables any time after 1:00 Sunday afternoon. Please let the Christmas by Candlelight ticket Coordinator know if you plan on purchasing all the tickets for your table (that will be 7 tickets ($35) – the hostess’s ticket is free).

What if I don’t drive at night? Don’t let that stop you from attending. The Christmas by Candlelight Com-

mittee has a list of ladies who are willing to carpool to the event. Just let us know if you need a ride.

How much are tickets? Christmas by Candlelight is a very affordable evening. Tickets to this event are

$5.00 and we hope to fill all the tables. Invite a friend to attend with you.

What is our Mission Outreach Project Sponsored by DFLC Ladies? Ladies who attend are encouraged to bring diapers and baby wipes to be do-

nated to Desert Foothills Food Bank.

Sign-up at the Welcome Cart in the Church Lobby to host a table; or contact Patty Wendel, 817.307.0206, [email protected].

Property Ministry Report Greg Deuel September 2017 A special thanks to all the DFLC members for their support this Sum-mer. We’ve been able to keep ahead of most of the routine mainte-nance issues as well as the occasional surprises. The lighting replace-ment project has consumed most of our volunteer hours and we’re still not complete. We’re working with our lighting supplier to provide a better solution in various areas so we’re patiently waiting on sup-plies to wrap this up. Approximately 85% of the interior lighting has been converted to LED technology to date.

There are a few items remaining on our TO-DO list such as refinishing the exterior wood doors and repairing the ceiling over the choir area.

It takes a lot of effort to keep our campus in great shape and there is a lot of new projects on the horizon that can use your help.

If you would like to volunteer your time and talents please contact me or the office, and we will get you on the mailing list for special projects.
