GAMING, REALLY? YES!

"Game players regularly exhibit persistence, risk-

taking, attention to detail, and problem-solving, all behaviors that ideally would be regularly

demonstrated in school."

-The Education Arcade at MIT

HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS

BENEFITS TO GAMING

➤ Games increase interest for students in school

➤ Games help students' to become better thinkers and problem solvers

➤ Games make it easier to understand difficult concepts

➤ Board games often encourage players to detect patterns, plan ahead, predict the outcome of alternative moves, use deductive logic, and learn from experience.

GAMING, REALLY? YES!

➤ More than 60% of boys and girls envision the use of games in their ultimate school setting

➤ 1/3 of principals are supporting digital games in their schools

➤ Research shows there is a link between playing certain games and scoring well on math tests. These scores increase again with parent or teacher involvement during game play.

LOOK AT THE FACTS!

TIME TO PLAY

➤ Walk around the room, find a game that interests you.

➤ Glance over the instructions, or ask an expert. See if anyone has played it before.

➤PLAY THE GAME ➤ Make sure to rotate through

the other games so you can see them all.

➤ Write the name of the game down, or snap a pic w/ your phone or tablet to remember!

WHERE DO I FIND THESE WONDERFUL GAMES?

➤ Start w/ a local “gaming shop” if you have one, or there is one near you. They may have it, or have recommendations for similar games if you want to try something new!

➤ Talk to your students, see if they have ideas. But avoid Cards Against Humanity… trust us on this one

➤ Target has several (Pandemic, Evolution, Dixit) and others in their board game aisle (typically next to toys)

➤ SuperFight, Secret Code, Once Upon A Time, Dixit, Freedom and Sneaky Cards were all ordered from Amazon.

➤ Check out http://playplaylearn.com for more great ideas!

TAKEAWAYS

➤ Learning that takes place through experiential learning is richer & deeper. This can be achieved through games.

➤ Want to sell this to teachers & admins? Find games that align to curriculum. Check out http://playplaylearn.com for ideas.

➤ MODIFY as necessary. 2 player games can become team games. Several games have “expansion” sets i.e. SuperFight, Dixit, Once Upon A Time.

➤ Collaborative & competitive games both have benefits depending on your outcome. Choose wisely.

➤ Consider implementing “game design” rather than just games. Let the students DESIGN a game from the ground up.
