Andechs Abbey stands prominently on the “Holy Mountain” above the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee. It has been an important place of pilgrimage for 500 years and attracts visitors from all over the world. The abbey has a colourful history and is, even today, one of the most important Christian sites in Bavaria. Andechs Abbey has two claims to fame: prayer and beer. The Andechs monks are self-sufficient thanks to their brewery and the “Holy Mountain” satisfies every thirst, whether for mercy or companionship, prayer or the amber nectar. Hospitality and good food and drink have been priorities at the abbey for over 500 years, as the Benedictine creed dictates. The abbey offers young people’s holidays, temporary stays, days of quiet and reflection, spiritual exercises and seminars.

After a delicious lunch, you will be introduced to your Porsche 911, and here the adventure begins.

Our first stop is Monastery Andechs, a popular pilgrim destination for over a half millenium. The Monastery lies in the midst of the 5-lakes country (Fünf-Seen-Landes), and is visible on the holy mountain (Heiligen Berg) over the east bank of the Ammersee.

On our way back we will also see the Starnberger See, a well-known luxury retreat for Munich professionals.

After breakfast, we’ll head to the Autobahn and enjoy a long, high-speed run ending at Castle Neuschwanstein.

Visiting the original Disney Castle (completed 1884), you will enjoy your lunch with the view of the Alps.

SATurDAy - DAy 2

Neuschwanstein Castle is Mad King Ludwig’s magnificent and most famous castle. This is also the castle that Walt Disney patterned his theme park after. With its turrets and mock-medievalism, and its interior styles ranging from Byzantine through Romanesque to Gothic, Germany’s number one tourist spot is a real fairy-tale fantasy come true. Neuschwanstein is perched high on a hill overlooking both the border town of Schwangau and its sister castle, Hohenschwangau.

SATurDAy - DAy 2A short drive through the magnificent Bavarian countryside will lead us to Wies. There, we will view the Wies Abbey which the UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 1983.

The Pilgrimage Church of Wies is an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s by Dominikus Zimmermann, who for the last eleven years of his life lived nearby. it is located in the foothills of the Alps, in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.

In 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour. This miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture. In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine. Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar, have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site.

Construction took place between 1745 and 1754, and the interior was decorated with frescoes and with stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School. “Everything was done throughout the church to make the supernatural visible. Sculpture and murals combined to unleash the divine in visible form”.

SATurDAy - DAy 2From Wies Abbey, we’ll head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, passing the famous Abbey of Ettal.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen was a very important trade city in the past. It lies at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.

Absolutely unique: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, located amidst breathtaking mountain scenery at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze (2962 m), is the epitome of vast and pristine alpine nature. It is a unique place in an awesome setting where outdoor activities are extraordinary experiences — between mountain and valley, in the water or in the air. It is a region that has shaped human beings and their culture. Here, you still find typical Bavarian traditions in their original form. A place where you get closer to nature and discover something about yourself.

From Garmisch, we will take a ride to cross the border to Austria and spend the night in Seefeld, Tirol.

The 500-year-old Monastery of Seefeld has always been a popular meeting point for travelers from all corners of the globe. Five centuries ago, pilgrims and imperial hunting groups were served food and drink by the Augustinian monks. After the monastery had been closed and sold in 1809, the Seyrling family assumed the role of hosts in the former monastery.

Today we will enjoy the hospitality of the Seyerling family.

SATurDAy - DAy 2

Seefeld is first mentioned in documents in 1022. At this time monks and farmers were starting to settle on the plateau. in order to protect them the Count of Andechs built a castle at the north side of the settlement and from then on that area was known as Schlossberg.

In 1384 the so-called “Wonder of the Host” took place. The knight Oswald Milser demanded that the priest give him a larger piece of the Communion host than was given to normal people. He started to sink into the floor for his arrogance. Soon after thousands of pilgrims started to visit the plateau to see the site of this wonder.

Even the Emperor Maximilian was impressed by the events and sponsored the building of an Augustine monastery in Seefeld. The monks helped the locals to regular work and prosperity through the construction of a brewery and a timber business. They also offered travellers accommodation for a small price. Seefeld is pretty well-known worldwide as the venue for a few major sporting events. In 1964 and 1976 it was one of the locations for the Olympic Games and in 1985 the Nordic Ski World Championships took place here.

SuNDAy - DAy 3Our tour will continue along the inn valley (Inntal) to the Austrian Alps, winding upwards over the Alps and winding back down into Germany.

The Alps are Europe’s major range of mountains, spanning from the Mediterranean coast of France via Switzerland, N italy and Austria to Slovenia. As such, a considerable area of Austria is part of this mountain range, accordingly hiking, skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing rate highly among Austrian’s favorite pastimes. The clean air, spectacular sights, lakes and glaciers and well-tended trails and hikes contribute to the Alps allure and attract numerous tourists and visitors.

Lunch will be served surrounded by elegant classic cars and a beautiful view of Lake Chiemsee.

SuNDAy - DAy 3We will be heading back to Munich via the Autobahn, taking another high speed ride before getting ready for the famous Hofbräuhaus in the heart of Munich.

The state-owned Hofbräuhaus is the world’s most famous beer hall. Visitors with only 1 night in Munich usually come here. The present Hofbräuhaus was built in 1897, but the tradition of a beer house on this spot dates from 1589. In the 19th century, it attracted artists, students, and civil servants, and was called the Blue Hall because of its dim lights and smoky atmosphere. When it grew too small to contain all the patrons who wanted to visit, architects designed another, in 1897.

Today, 4,000 beer drinkers can crowd in here on any given night. Several rooms, including a top-floor room for dancing, are spread over three floors. With its brass band (which starts playing at 11am), the ground-floor Schwemme is most typical of what you probably expected -- here it’s eternal Oktoberfest. In the second-floor restaurant, strolling musicians entertain, and dirndl-clad servers offer mugs of beer between singalongs. Every night the Hofbräuhaus presents a typical Bavarian show in its Fest-Hall, starting at 7:45pm and lasting until midnight. (This was also the 1920 setting for the notorious meeting of Hitler’s newly launched German Workers Party, when a brawl erupted between the Nazis and their Bavarian enemies.) The hall is open daily 9am to midnight.
