Course Presenters

Professor Ralph Nanan Professor Ralph Nanan is Chair and Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Sydney Medical School Nepean and Sub-dean of Research. He is the Director of the Charles Perkins Centre Nepean and leads the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease project node. Professor Nanan is also the Director of Child Health of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and is Head of the Paediatric Immunology Research Unit at Nepean Hospital. Professor Nanan’s main areas of interest are the developmental origins of health and disease with a specific focus on paediatric clinical immunology, allergy and perinatology. Professor Nanan was the first to find an association with fetal thymic development and pregnancy related conditions such as preeclampsia. As the Director of Charles Perkins Centre Nepean, Professor Nanan is currently expanding research into how environmental factors interact with genetic variation during pregnancy to influence the likelihood of developing chronic diseases later in life, such as obesity and diabetes, but also conditions such as allergy.

Associate Professor Kirsten Black Kirsten is an academic gynaecologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) and Joint Head of the Discipline of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Neonatology at The University of Sydney. She has a PhD (2008) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. She works in direct clinical care in the fields of early pregnancy care, ultrasound, menopause and contraception where she leads a specialist contraception service at the RPAH, a tertiary referral hospital. She has a national clinical and research profile in the field of reproductive health and chairs a committee on sexual and reproductive health for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians.

Dr Adrienne Gordon

Adrienne is a Neonatal Staff Specialist in the RPA centre for newborn care and an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow at the University of Sydney. She has a Masters of Public Health and a PhD on risk factors for stillbirth. She is particularly interested in perinatal topics with a public health impact that have the potential to improve pregnancy and newborn outcomes. Adrienne is Deputy Chair of the National Scientific Advisory Group of SIDSandKIDS to increase their stillbirth advocacy, a member of the IMPACT network for improving health through perinatal clinical trials, represents NSW on the National Perinatal Mortality Report project and has close links with perinatal consumer groups such as Miracle babies and the Stillbirth Foundation Australia. She is an avid supporter of evidence based policy and practice and is passionate about translating research into clinical care. Adrienne is Project Lead for the Charles Perkins Centre’s BABY1000 Cohort Study. BABY1000 will provide a major contribution to knowledge regarding early life predictors of health and disease and the interventions that will ultimately improve health for our future generations.

Dr Gary Leong Associate Professor Gary Leong is a paediatric endocrinologist and diabetologist with clini-cal research interests in the prevention and improvement in the management of children, ad-olescents and family with obesity and metabolic disorders. Gary is the Clinical Lead for Child Diabetes and Obesity services, the latter within the new whole of lifespan Family Obesity Service at Nepean Hospital, Penrith and the Nepean Charles Perkins Research Hub, University of Sydney. Gary is passionate about promoting family health and physical and mental fitness and tries to lead by example through his cycling challenges with the Smiddy Cancer Research Charity and the Big Red Ride. Dr Kris Park Dr Kris Park has been a Senior Staff Specialist at Nepean Hospital since 2000. Previously she had been Head of department of Endocrinology (2007-2010) and Medical Director of Diabetes Service (2000-2010). Dr Park has been involved in the development and expan-sion of many services including insulin pump and technology service, high risk pregnancy service and the establishment of the Diabetes Transition program for young adults between 15-25 years of age. Amongst her qualifications, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales, a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and a PhD at the University of Sydney with the tile ‘Non-traditional Vascular Risk Factors in Diabetes’. Dr Nada Rawof Dr. Nada Rawof, Bachelor of medicine and surgery University of Baghdad 2003. Awarded FRACGP 2012. Diploma of Obesity management though university of south wales-UK 2016. To further complement her interest, she underwent further trainings in women’s health. Dr Rawof’s current practice is divided between general practice, women’s health and obesity management. Majority of Dr Rawof’s General practice time is dedicated to women’s health, registered with the Western Sydney / Westmead Network for antenatal shared care program. Obesity management and prevention takes good portion of her time, with two days a week fully assigned for obesity, through Sydney Metabolic Surgery clinic. Dr Louise Fay Following completion of training and working as a consultant in the National Maternity Hospital and Merrion Fertility Clinic, Dublin, she returned to Sydney with her family in 2011. Louise provides an attentive individualised approach for all couples and individuals. Her specialist services include male and female infertility, reproductive medicine & fertility preservation, recurrent miscarriage and gynaecological disorders. Louise is also practicing at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. On-going research interests include recurrent miscarriage and repeated IVF failure and she is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Ms Susan Williams

Susan is a non diet dietitian. She has worked as a dietitian in private and public sector roles for over 15 years. Susan founded her private practice Zest Nutrition Consulting in 2007 and specializes in treating eating behaviour issues, weight concerns and eating disorders. Susan is a cofounder of Health at Every Size Australia, a non profit organization that connects health professionals that practice from a weight neutral paradigm, and raises awareness of the harms of weight bias and stigma in health care. Susan brings a weight neutral non diet focus to her

role in the Nepean Blue Mountains Family Obesity Service.

Dr Bernard Champion A/Prof Bernard Champion is a Sydney-trained Endocrinologist at Macquarie University Hospital. After a 3-year stint as a VMO in Geelong he spent 12 years at Nepean Hospital and Nepean Clinical School with the University of Sydney Medical Program including 5 years as Head of Department, Endocrinology & Diabetes (2011-2016). He has held various state and national appointments including Editorial Panel and Series Editor for Endocrinology Today, expert reviewer for IMJ, MJA & AFP, national FRACP Written Exam Committee Endocrine rep-resentative and Chair of the NSW/ACT Central Panel for Endocrine Advanced Training. In late 2016, he commenced as Associate Professor in Medicine at Macquarie University, to assist in the establishment of the newly AMC-approved Macquarie MD program. In addition to his medical education interests, he runs busy clinical practice at Nepean and Macquarie where his interests include pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid disease, plus metabolic diseases including diabetes and obesity.

Dr Linda Mann Dr Linda Mann was educated at NSW University, and has local and overseas medical experience, especially in genetics and women's health – including pregnancy care. She is the GP representative on various national and local government committees and is an experienced medical educator. In 2014 Dr Mann was awarded the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award for her dedication to training the future of the general practice profession. Linda works in the Your Doctors practice and at RPAH. Linda also makes regular trips to the remote town of Borroloola in Northern Territory 1000km SE of Darwin where she provides supporting medical care.

Dr Kathryn Williams Kathryn is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and the Adult Clinical Lead for the Family Obesity Services in the Nepean-Blue Mountains Local Health District. She is also an HVMO at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and a Clinical Investigator at the Boden Institute. She also works as an endocrinologist in private practice. Kathryn completed her medical training in 2001 at the University of New South Wales and also completed a PhD in 2016, examining the relationship between type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. She also has an interest in the health of Aboriginal and Torres-Strait islander peoples, previously working at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern from 2015-2016. She has been the Unit of Study Coordinator for the Diabetes Management and Advanced Diabetes Management units of study for the Metabolic Health Postgraduate Program from 2014-2016.

Mr Nick Rosser Nick Rosser is the Manager of the Nepean Blue Mountains HealthPathways program. He stud-

ied Exercise Science and Rehabilitation, and a research Masters in Biomedical Science at the

University of Wollongong. During this time he was employed in a private consultancy with a

German health management company where he designed health interventions and clinical

guidelines for corporate health programs. Nick then moved on to roles in telehealth programs

before commencing in the Connecting Care program, where he designed and implemented an

integrated program in the SESLHD. Nick then moved into Aboriginal ealth, implementing a

Continual Quality Improvement program at Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service before the

opportunity arose to be involved in the NBM Health Pathways program.

Dr Catherine Brunton

Dr. Brunton is a General Practitioner working in MCGraths Hill, Hawkesbury region, and lead clinician for the Hawesbury After Hours GP Clinic. She has been a Clinical Editor for the NMB PHN Health Pathways project in 2016. She was awarded her Fellowship to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in May 2012. She graduated from Leeds University School of Medicine, England, in 2003. She went on to specialise in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care medicine. In 2007 she retrained as a general practitioner and was awarded her membership to the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK. She worked for the National Health System (NHS) for 4 years as a GP and pursued a specialist interest in wom-en’s health and family planning. In 2011 she completed her Diploma in Family planning, Sexu-al and Reproductive Health Care (DFSRH) awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians

and Gynaecologist (UK).

Dr Edwina Dorney

Edwina has Bachelor Medicine & Surgery and Bachelor of Applied Science from Sydney Uni-versity. She worked clinically in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology for over 10 years both in the United Kingdom and Australia and completed the membership exams of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2014. She has clinical research experience in the field of reproductive health and is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney, coordinating units for the Masters of Sexual and Reproductive

Health.
