give the money back, or carry on and complete the goal. He says ‘we’ve gone this far, lets finish it.” Mike was quick to mention the community being St. Joseph Island as a whole, as the club is willing to lend a hand at any corner of St. Joseph Island for many different events and causes, either finan-cially or with manpower as long as there is “rea-sonable reason.” While the majority of the pancake breakfasts do happen in Hilton Beach, they also host breakfasts in St. Joseph Township, for exam-ple. Their highway cleanups benefit anyone who lives or even visits the area.

Besides the breakfast, the Hall hosts many different events put on both by the Village and other groups and clubs including flower shows, Christmas and other craft shows, kids painting nights and many other things, so it is many different groups and individuals who will make use of them, not just those in Hilton or Hilton Beach. The new tables are lightweight plastic, easy to move and clean and a big improvement over the old tables. The village did, however, donate the old tables to the St. Jo-seph Island Hunters & Anglers Club who will still be able to make use of them in the future.

While they obviously expected the new tables to see immediate use, they will eventually be used. The club is currently working with Algoma Public health with the possibly to soon safely host events again. While the breakfasts are popular, with staggered times and the relatively large hall they are confident they can accommodate most people without major inconveniences and maintain prop-er distancing and safety measures.

Well this season is definitely slower than previous years but the Museum has had some visitors. Maybe with slightly cooler temperatures even more people will decide visit. With events cancelled, this summer is a great opportunity to spice up your staycation and visit local attractions. I quite often hear from many a local that they haven’t been to the museum or it’s been years since their last visit.

This week’s moment was written by former curator Cindy Crawford-July 9, 1999.

Many visitors to the St. Joseph Island Museum will use the phrase the good old days when referring to the pioneer era. The reality however, was that while there certainly were good days, they were often offset by even more days of hardship and survival.

Probably the most misunderstood aspect of yesteryear concerns the value of a dollar. In comparison to what today’s dollar can buy, prices from 100 plus years ago appear to be very cheap. Let’s use the scenario of a young couple marrying and setting up house on the Island circa 1910. A formal suit, perfect for a wedding, set a gentleman back $10-$16 . A fancy gown would cost a gal in the neighbourhood of 60 cents per yard of silk taffeta in 20 inch width. Most dresses were made,

Not Your Average Yard Sale

Richard Laude has been holding nearly weekly yard sales for many years. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, it may well be worth your time. While he certainly has a few household items, the majority of what he is selling are items from over 40 years of collecting all kinds of things. From antique equipment, to model trains, to crystals he personally collected while working in Wawa. Basically the whole yard has stuff for sale!

While Richard is looking to downsize decades of collect-ing, he certainly is not trying to cash in after a lifetime of collecting. All proceeds from his yard sales go to both the Children’s Library in Richards Landing, as well as to help fund the Children’s Fishing Derby put on at nearby Twin Lakes by St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers. With the derby taking place near his home, he has helped out many times by taking videos at the derby. He also mentions how much his grandchildren enjoy The Children’s Library when they visit the island, and is happy to help both out. He plans on splitting the proceeds this year between the library and the derby. The yard sale will continue on the weekends throughout the month of August. While turn-out may not be as high as in previous years, he still has been having many stop in for a look and perhaps a history lesson.

not bought off the rack, but for several women in-terested in mail order dressmaking she could expect to pay $20-$30 for a tailored gown. Anticipate an additional $15 for gloves, hosiery, hat, corset, corset cover and petticoats. Matching 18k gold rings with a plain band would cost $15.50. For the upper crust set a lady’s wedding ring, featuring a whole pearl sur-rounded with diamond clusters on a 14k band would cost the equivalent of six weeks’ salary or $48.

In the early 1900s, the average salary for a worker in a lumber camp or mill yard was $8 per week. That was for 10 hours a day, six days a week. According to the classifieds in the St. Joseph Herald, a nice home in Hilton Beach could be rented for $8 a month. Fur-nishing a home, according to notes written by a new-ly married couple in 1912, could set you back $158. That included the following order, delivered by the T. Eaton Company Limited. A sofa, 6 kitchen chairs, a wood stove, a box stove, a sideboard, two double beds with mattresses and box springs, a wash tub and wash board. A good carpet described as being splen-did enough to have in your parlour ran $1 a yard. Most vegetables would be home grown and groceries made from scratch and not purchased. Staple items still cost $2 for 100 pounds of flour, a keg of cleaned and salted trout was $5 and beef was 10 cents a pound.

Crossword solution

Sudoku -AnswersNews from the NSHN Auxiliary Richard’s Landing Matthews Site:

Despite the cancellation of this year’s Community Night, the Quilt Raffle was an outstanding success and the draw took place Friday Night at Mat-thew’s Hospital.

1st prize of the quilt went to Sarah Buckley, 2nd prize of the bicycle went to Sarah Dane, and 3rd prize of the $500 gift certificate from TimberMart went to Shari Duffin. The tickets sold out this year thanks to the support of people from far and wide who recognize the value of our local hospital.

The Auxiliary would like to sincerely thank Sher-ry Kent for initiating the donation fundraiser and gratefully thank so many who have supported the cause. To date we have received $5400.00 in dona-tions, a $2000.00 grant from the Township of St. Joseph and $4200.00 in ticket sales from our quilt draw for a total of $11,600.00 profit which slight-ly exceeds our profits from the 2019 Community Night. This community has been here for our hos-pital just like our hospital has always been here for the community. Submitted by NSHN Auxiliary Richard’s Landing Mat-thews Site.
