    Introduction

    The GIMP is the "GNU Image Manipulation Program(" The name is more $es'ripti!e

    than most be'ause it tells you that the program is release$ un$er the GNU Publi' i'ense9meaning it-s ree to use an$ ree to mo$iy:, an$ that it-s a program or mo$iying or

    'reating images(

    This tutorial is highly inormal, an$ is a &al+;through o some airly basi' things that 'an

    be $one &ith the GIMP( I hope this tas+;oriente$ tutorial &ill be more helpul to peoplethan a more ormal stru'turally oriente$ intro$u'tion( The layout o this paper $oes mean

    that it-s ne'essary to start at the beginning an$ ollo& along, sin'e ea'h se'tion buil$s on

    the pre!ious one an$ assumes you ha!e the +no&le$ge a'8 platorm an$ %in$o&s( / Ma' port is in progress, but apparently not toosoli$( I you-re $o&nloa$ing it or %in$o&s, loo+ or !.(2( ; the pre!ious port to

    The program the GIMP is most 'ommonly 'ompare$ to is /$obe-s Photoshop( I-!e ne!er

    use$ Photoshop, but 'on!ersations &ith a goo$ rien$ &ho has use$ it or many yearsha!e re!eale$ that the GIMP has most o Photoshop-s eatures, an$ it has a mu'h more

    po&erul s'ripting intera'e 9using isp or Perl:( 6ont?te#t support isn-t as goo$, but I-!e

    Installation

    6or most inu# installations, the GIMP is rea$ily a!ailable in pre'ompile$ binary ormat

    an$ is thereore !ery easily installe$( The same applies to %in$o&s( 3o'umentation onthis, an$ on 'ompiling an$ installing the GIMP on your ma'hine is rea$ily a!ailable on

    the internet, so it &on-t be 'o!ere$ here(

    Loading an Image in the GIMP

    )tart the GIMP( I this is your irst time running the GIMP, you-ll be &al+e$ throughsetting up the 'oniguration iles ; a''epting the $eaults &or+s &ell( @ou-ll also be as+e$

    to 'alibrate the s'reen( @ou 'an either a''ept the $eaults again, or you 'an get out a ruler

    an$ measure a ruler the GIMP puts up on s'reen( I re'ommen$ this, but unless you ha!ean unusual s'reen or nee$ !ery a''urate on;s'reen representation, it probably isn-t

    ne'essary(

    %hen you-re &or+ing on an image, most o the menus you-ll use are a''esse$ by right;

    'li'+ing on the image, NOT on the main panel( Use the panel to sele't tools, but get your

    menues by right;'li'+ing on the image(

    Resi+ing the Image

    Note in the titlebar that it has a "50D" in$i'ator( This in$i'ates that the image is mu'h

    larger than it appears 9t&i'e the sie:( This tells me that the image is bigger than I &ant it

    to be, so I-ll s'ale the image $o&n( *ight;'li'+ on the image, an$ sele't "Image ;E )'aleImage (((" I-!e 'hosen to re$u'e the image to F5D o its original sie=

    The ")'ale Image" &in$o&(

    Noti'e that by $eault the ratios are lo'+e$ 9or "'haine$": together= &hen I 'hange one,

    the other ollo&s( This is usually &hat you &ant so the proportions o the image remainthe same( The resie$ image appears smaller, as you might e#pe't( To &or+ &ith it at .=.

    The GIMP $eaults to the ol$er te#t tool ; it &or+s, but I-$ highly re'ommen$ you 'li'+

    the "Use 3ynami' Te#t" 'he'+bo#( The $eault te#t tool only allo&s a single line o te#t,

    &hereas 3ynami' Te#t allo&s multiple lines( There are numerous other impro!ements as&ell(

    It-s not ne'essary to 'lose the "Tool Options" &in$o&= you 'an lea!e it open an$ it &illrele't the options o &hate!er tool you-re using, or you 'an 'lose it( The 'hoi'e is yours(

    I you mo!e the pointer o!er the image, you-ll see that you get the "I;beam" in$i'ator,sho&ing you that i you 'li'+ on the image you-ll be inserting te#t( a'h tool you 'an use

    in the GIMP has its o&n 'ursor in$i'ator li+e this, an$ you-$ be &ise 9&iser than me: to

    pay attention to &hat the 'ursor is telling you( I you 'li'+ on the image &ith the &rongtool, you 'an $o some ba$ things to your image(

    %hi'h brings us to another $igression about a !ery useul +ey 'ombination( "Ctrl;H" is

    possibly the most important thing you 'an learn about the GIMP( It means "Un$o the last

    'hange(" Please note that you ha!e to ha!e an image &in$o& sele'te$ or it to &or+( @ou'an un$o multiple 'hanges ; usually i!e, although you 'an reset the !alue in the $eaults(

    Cli'+ on the image to bring up the te#t tool( I you-re using 3ynami' Te#t, it $oesn-t

    really matter &here you 'li'+, as the Te#t Tool has a positioning 'ontrol built in( I $on-t

    in$ this useul &hen a$$ing te#t to pi'tures, it-s easier to 7ust let it $rop the te#t &here it&ants an$ then I 'an mo!e the te#t to &here I &ant it to be( )ee the images that ollo& to

    see ho& I set up the te#t, an$ &here it appears on the image(

    Placing and Modif,ing the Te*t

    %ith both the layers !isible an$ the te#t layer sele'te$, 'hoose the mo!e tool 9the 'rosse$

    arro&s: in the main panel( No& mo!e the 'ursor o!er the te#t &e a$$e$ to the image,noti'ing that the 'ursor 'hanges bet&een a han$ &hen you-re o!er the ba'+groun$ an$ a

    mo!e i'on &hen you-re o!er the te#t( In a't, i you 'li'+ an$ $rag on the ba'+groun$

    rather than the te#t, you-ll mo!e the ba'+groun$( *emember that you 'an un$o mista+es&ith Ctrl;H( Mo!e the te#t to &here you thin+ it loo+s best(

    %ith the te#t layer still sele'te$, right;'li'+ on the image an$ 'hoose "ayers ;E ayer to

    Imagesie(" This &ill in'rease the sie o the te#t layer to mat'h that o the image( The

    utility o this 'hange isn-t parti'ularly ob!ious at this point, but it-s helpul in some o the

    'hanges &e-ll be ma+ing later, it $oesn-t 'ause any problems, an$ I in$ the layer bor$er9the yello& an$ bla'+ 'he'+e$ line mentione$ earlier: $istra'ting( This is one o se!eral

    No& $upli'ate the layer( to $o this, ma+e sure the te#t layer is sele'te$ in the "ayers,

    something li+e "Te#t"( I use this rather than "oshua Tree Monument" be'ause it-s mu'h

    shorter an$ I only ha!e one pie'e o te#t to &or+ &ith so it remains unambiguous( 3o thesame thing or "G3ynTe#t ayer," 'alling it "Te#t )ha$o&("

    %e-re no& going to blur the "Te#t )ha$o&" layer, so ma+e sure it-s sele'te$ in the

    "ayers, Channels Paths" $ialogue bo#( I &oul$ also re'ommen$ that you ma+e the top

    layer 9"Te#t": in!isible by 'li'+ing on the eye i'on, but this isn-t stri'tly ne'essary( /lsoin the ayers $ialogue, ma+e sure that "Aeep Trans(" is NOT set( It-s usually set, an$ &e

    &ant to turn it o( 1lurring 9&hi'h is &hat &e-re hea$e$ or here: &on-t &or+ &ith "Aeep

    Trans(" No& right;'li'+ on the image, sele't "6ilters ;E 1lur ;E Gaussian 1lur 9*:"(There-s not a lot o pra'ti'al $ieren'e bet&een * an$ II* 9I $on-t 'laim to un$erstan$

    the Te#t layer ; but i you turn its !isibility ba'+ on, then it-s har$ to 'li'+ on the sha$o&to $rag it be'ause it-s hi$ing behin$ the top layer ((( )o I use "Image ;E Transorms ;E

    Oset (((" 9I-ll assume rom no& on that you +no& to right;'li'+ on the image to get at the

    menus:( This brings up another $ialogue bo#=

    To mo!e the sha$o& $o&n an$ right enter "F" an$ "F" 9an appropriate oset $epen$s on

    the ont sie ; this &or+s &ell &ith the 50 pi#el ont use$ here:( /ter saying OA to this,

    turn the !isibility o the top layer o te#t ba'+ on( I elt that the appearan'e o the sha$o&

    &as too hea!y, so I &ent ba'+ to the "ayers, Channels Paths" &in$o& &here to mo!ethe Opa'ity sli$er or the "Te#t )ha$o&" layer $o&n to 50( This lea!es the sha$o& still

    !isible, but not ob!ious( %hen you ha!e a !ery hea!y $rop sha$o&, it-s more ob!ious

    that "ayer 6ill Type" is set to "Transparent(" %ith your ne& layer sele'te$, use thearro& +eys in the ayers $ialogue to mo!e the ne& layer $o&n the layer sta'+ until it-s

    un$er the t&o te#t layers(

    Mo!ing layers ; press the $o&n arro& t&i'e to mo!e the sele'te$ layer $o&n the sta'+ to

    its ne& position(
