GETTING TO KNOW HIGH SCHOOL

Last evening P&C president, Mrs Kelly James welcomed Moree Secondary College – Carol Ave Campus personnel Mrs Paula Barton (Principal), Mrs Bethany Kelly (Deputy/Head Teacher) and Mrs Alexia Karam as guest speakers for the meeting. It was interesting to learn more about the 2019/2020 plans that are in place to support students as they transition to high school. An invitation was also extended to parents who may wish to visit the school for a tour of the facilities and to further discuss the wide range of Years 7-9 programs being offered. I urge parents to contact Mrs Barton through their office (67506500) and become informed about secondary schooling – I am sure this will contribute to a smooth transition for both you and your Year 6 child. Perhaps, parents of younger children may also consider visiting Carol Ave to see the exciting programs and opportunities available in Moree.

Budding scientists and problem solvers are encouraged through a range of academic challenges. A group of eager MPS students recently participated in the annual Science and Engineering Challenge at Narrabri. Miss Larken was thrilled with the co-operative manner in which our teams approached their tasks earning an admirable second place for the Challenge.

Road Safety is everyone’s concern! The times between 8:30am and 9:00am and between 2:40pm and 3:20pm are extremely busy at the front of the school as parents drop off and pick up children. Parents are reminded to abide by the parking signs at the front of the school. Every day I notice (and worry) a number of parents walking children across the road without using the crossings provided – and on occasions walking between the buses! Please be very careful when crossing the road and model road safety by using the crossings, as many families do. Yes, it does require parking the car and yes it does take another five or ten minutes but safety must come first. Thank you for your co-operation and support with this vital issue.

Multicultural Public Speaking: As adults, we sometimes feel that public speaking is a daunting activity! I am pleased to say, not so for a group of students who put their hand up to participate in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition last week. The students prepared well for the challenge in what was an extremely close contest. The adjudicators were impressed with the skill shown by students in their research and presentation of a prepared speech on the topic relating to multicultural Australia, followed by an impromptu speech (with only five minutes preparation time). Well done to Chloe Elbourne, Harriet Beattie, Emma Tydd and Edward Beattie who will now represent MPS at the regional finals.

Tristan, Harriet, Louis, Ella, Mackenzie, Lucy, Mitchell, Isabelle, Jack, Edward, Lucy, Josie, Emma and Michael.

It was a pleasure to listen to these very confident speakers present engaging and interesting speeches!

The district cross country team managed by Mrs Black represented at the regional events hosted by Mullaley last Friday. Long distance running requires some serious determination and our students did not disappoint. They represented our school well as they competed against the best runners from around the region and certainly the before school training runs with Mrs Black, prepared the students well for the hills and cool weather. Special congratulations to Jonah James and Henry Johnston who both arrived home in 7th position and are reserves for the north west team that will compete at Eastern Creek early next term. A gala day of rugby union at Barraba, last Monday gave the MPS boys a great experience, recording two wins against Inverell and Tamworth. A gala day of rugby league (PSSA knockout rounds) will be held at Inverell on Friday – a rescheduled carnival when extreme weather caused the event to be postponed. Congratulations to Darcy Brazel and Ben Di Donna who were both recently selected to play in the NW rugby union regional team.

Darcy and Ben will play at western Sydney University

rugby fields in August – a great achievement! Semester 1 student reports are currently being completed to provide parents with information of their child progress during this semester. The report will be sent home with each child on Monday 1st July and will be in a sealed envelope addressed to the parent/caregiver. An invitation for parent/teacher interview will be included in the report envelope for students in Kinder – Year 2. Students in Years 3-6 have already been provided with information for a different model of discussion through the personal website launch evening. I urge all parents to take this opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s academic and social progress. As always, should you wish to meet with your teacher at any time throughout the year, please contact the school office and/or send a brief note with your child and a mutually convenient time will be arranged. NAIDOC Day will be celebrated at MPS on Tuesday 2nd July. Please put the date in your diary. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians. Once again, we have been fortunate to obtain the services of renowned Indigenous performer Roy Newman who will entertain the school with a performance at 11.30am followed by workshops for the senior students after lunch.

Are your contact details up-to-date? Please make sure you inform the front office if your contact details have changed. It is vital that parent/carer telephone numbers and emergency contacts are current at all times. Likewise, it is essential that students who require any form of Health Care Plan; Action Plan for Allergies or Anaphylaxis; and/or Asthma plan, are reviewed regularly by your doctor and presented to the school office. Personal letters to this effect are being sent to parents who have indicated health care requirements either at enrolment or a later point of schooling. Uniforms are an important part of being a proud member of any group, team or community. Representing the school is a privilege and as such we expect students to always try their best and comply with the school’s uniform policy. To this end, uniforms and hats are always available for those who may need an emergency item. The P&C volunteer uniform shop co-ordinators ensure a range of uniform items (both new and second hand) are available at reasonable cost. As always, families who may be experiencing financial hardship are urged to contact me for a confidential discussion about uniform needs. It is concerning to frequently see children wearing multi-coloured caps and jumpers at school, only to produce the correct uniform item from their bag if required. Parents, I do ask for your support in our pursuit of excellence and high standards – your children learn through a consistent team effort and high expectations.

Mrs L Hosegood - Principal (Rel)

3. P&C ASSOCIATION CANTEEN NEWS: Volunteers are invited to assist at the athletics carnival on the last day of term - cooking and serving at the barbecue lunch stall and donations of cakes and slices will be gratefully received either at the school office or the stall on the morning of the carnival. Please let canteen manager, Mrs Lobsey know of your availability – an hour or two will be most helpful.

The P&C would like to put a call out for Volunteers to help out in our School Canteen. No experience necessary! Congratulations 3M-23 for an excellent, collective reading achievement – just ten minutes reading per night adds up to a lot of enjoyment and acquisition of new knowledge and skills.

6. SPORTTennis: Moree Public School extends a huge congratulations to the tennis team and coach, Mrs Kaukiainen for braving the extreme wind chill factor, sleet, snow, rain and some strong on court competition at Guyra on Wednesday, 5th June when they travelled to play Bald Blair Public School in the PSSA knockout competition. Well done: Georgina Quinlan, Harriet Beattie, Sophie Rogers, James Fitzgerald, Jeremy Blatchford and Jack Rogers for a fantastic round of tennis. Moree won five sets to three Moree Public will now travel to Gunnedah tomorrow to play Gunnedah South PS in Round 5.

Rugby Union: MPS rugby union team played five games at last Monday’s gala day at Barraba. Coach, Mr Crowder was most impressed with their team work, led by captain Darcy Brazel for wins against Inverell and Tamworth. Congratulations to Richard Knox-Greenaway who scored two tries (on his birthday) and also to Ben Di Donna for a brilliant try after some very tough play. Morgan Bridge made some spectacular try saving tackles; Jesse-Jaymz Johnson and Tristan Carter made excellent runs up the centre with Blayne O'Dempsey and Mitchell Beddoes providing excellent support in the centre and out on the wing. Jeremy Blatchford was commended for his excellent clean out play in the rucks and mauls. Good work, team! Mr A. Crowder
