Shifting the AutomaticTransaxle into Park or Neutral

Your vehicle may be equipped with anautomatic transaxle. To shift into Reverse or Park: TheAveo’s shifter is a gated shifter. Theshifter uses the shifter’s knob as therelease mechanism and there is noother separate button that has to bepushed to release the shifter. To shift thetransmission from “Neutral” or “Drive” to“Reverse” or “Park,” you will have topush down on the shifter’s knob. Theshifter will not move into Reverse orPark if the knob is not depressed. To shift out of Park: The automatictransaxle is equipped with a shift lockcontrol system that locks the shift leverin Park (P) when the ignition is in Lock.To shift out of Park (P), the ignition keymust be in the On position, and youmust fully apply your regular brakes. Ifyou cannot shift out of Park (P), easepressure on the shift lever and push thelever all the way up into Park (P) as youmaintain foot pressure on the brakes. Then move the shift lever into the gearyou want.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Getting to Know Your Aveo12

To set the Hold mode:• Place the shift lever in the gear range

you want to hold.• Press the HOLD button located on

the shift lever console. (The HOLDindicator light on the SecondaryInformation Center will illuminate.)

• Press the button again to turn off theHold mode and return to normal auto-matic transaxle operation.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Automatic Transaxle HoldControl Mode (if equipped)

Integrated with the optional automatictransmission, this feature gives the driv-er complete control over the transmis-sion gear selection. When Hold Control is selected in the “D”position, the transmission is held in 3rdgear, which locks out overdrive (4thgear) and provides additional torque andresponsiveness at most higher speeds. This allows for engine braking duringhigher speed descents and decelera-tions. It also reduces/eliminates wheel-spin when starting out on snow or ice.Similarly, if Hold Control is selected inthe “2” position, the transmission willstart in 2nd gear (instead of 1st), helpingreduce wheelspin when starting out onslippery surfaces.

Note: Since placing Hold Control in the“D” position locks the transmission in3rd gear and prevents downshifts to2nd or 1st gear, acceleration from astandstill or near standstill on dry pave-ment will be slower than expected. HoldControl should be deselected duringthese situations.

Reverse Lockout Feature(Manual Transaxle)

This feature prevents the engagement ofReverse (R) gear when the vehicle ismoving forward. To shift into Reverse (R), depress theclutch pedal; then lift up the ring on theshift lever and shift into Reverse (R).Slowly release the clutch pedal whilepressing the accelerator.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Note: Shifting into Reverse (R) gearwhile your vehicle is moving forwardcould damage the transaxle. Shift intoReverse (R) only after the vehicle isstopped.

13

Cold Weather AutomaticTransaxle Shifting

When operating your vehicle in severecold conditions, the transaxle may beprevented from shifting into 4th gearuntil the transaxle fluid has warmed upto its operational temperature. It maytake several miles of driving to warm upthe fluid and enable the 4th gear upshift. While the fluid is warming up, your vehicle will shift normally between 1st,2nd and 3rd gear.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Opening the Hood

To open the hood, pull the hood releasehandle (shown above) located on thelower-left side of the instrument panel. At the front of the vehicle, feel under the front-center lip of the hood for thesecondary hood release (see aboveright) and push the lever up, using asqueezing motion.

Lift the hood and release the hood propfrom its retainer on the underside of thehood. Place the hood prop into the sloton the inner fender.

Remove the hood prop from the slot inthe inner fender and return the prop toits retainer on the underside of the hood.Lower the hood to 8–10 inches abovethe vehicle and release it to latch it fully.Check to ensure that it is latched prop-erly and repeat if necessary.See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.
