Keys — Replacement

The ignition keys for the GTO incorpo-rate several unique features, from theshaft design, which makes theft moredifficult, to integrated Remote KeylessEntry transmitters and encoded theft-deterrent electronics. For these reasons, replacing keys will require more costand time than standard keys. We recommend using GM dealers for anyreplacement keys.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Security Card

Every GTO comes with a Security Cardthat contains important information con-cerning the vehicle. The card containsthe Vehicle Identification Number (VIN),Ignition and Glove Box Key Codes, andyour Radio Personal IdentificationNumber. Please store this card withother important documents about yournew vehicle. If service work is everrequired, this information may be need-ed to enable proper operation.

Traction Control System (TCS)

Your GTO has a Traction ControlSystem (TCS) that limits your vehicle’swheelspin. This can be especially usefulon slippery roads. The system is automatically activatedwhenever the ignition is turned fromOFF to ON. When the system sensesthat one or both of the rear wheels arespinning or beginning to lose traction, the system reduces engine power andapplies the brakes as necessary toregain traction. Traction control helps you to maintaincontrol of your vehicle and acts as a reminder to match your driving to theroad conditions. When Traction Controlis activated, you may feel pulsing in the accelerator pedal. A Low Tractionmessage is displayed on the TripComputer. If your vehicle is stuck in snow or mud,and it is necessary to rock the vehicle tofree it, you can turn off the TractionControl by pressing the T/C button located on the center console.

Turn off TCS whenever you are usingtraction devices on your vehicle’s rearwheels (due to a lack of clearance, youcannot use tire chains).

When the system is off, the TripComputer displays a Traction Ctrl Offmessage, and after two seconds returns

to the original display with a small TRAC OFF icon on the right side of thescreen. To turn TCS back on, press theT/C button again. The system will automatically turn on the next time theengine is started.See Section 1 of your Owner Manual.

Fuel

Premium unleaded fuel with an octanerating of 91 or higher is recommendedfor best performance. Using regular ormiddle-grade fuel of 87 octane or higheris permissible, but the vehicle’s acceler-ation may be slightly reduced. If fuelwith an octane rating of less than 87 isused, you may hear a heavy knockingnoise that can damage your engine. Inthis instance, you should fill the fuel tankwith higher-octane fuel as soon as possible. After fueling, ensure that the gas capis installed correctly and tightly. If itis loose or missing, the malfunctionindicator lamp will light steadily. If aloose gas cap is the cause, a fewdriving trips after properly tighteningthe gas cap should cause the light togo out. Winter Driving Suggestions

Beware of Wet Ice When temperatures hover around 32degrees F (0 degrees C), wet ice canform on the roadway. Wet ice is formedat this temperature when freezing rainbegins to fall, and it offers even lesstraction than very cold snow or ice. Try

to avoid driving on wet ice until salt andsand crews can get there. Winter Driving TechniquesIn any low-traction situation, drive withcaution and keep the Traction ControlSystem (TCS) turned on. Do not use tirechains — there isn’t enough clearance(see your Owner Manual for full details). Prepare for stops sooner than you wouldif the road were dry. Allow greater follow-ing distances between your vehicle andthe vehicle ahead of you, and watch forslippery spots. Sometimes the surface ofa curve or an overpass/bridge may beicy when the surrounding roads areclear. If you see a patch of ice ahead ofyou, try to brake before you are on it.Try not to brake while you are actuallyon the ice, and avoid any sudden steer-ing maneuvers. If You Become StuckIf you become stuck in snow, ice, mudor sand, you may be able to free yourvehicle by rocking it. Turn your steeringwheel left and then right to clear thepath around your front wheels. Turn offthe Traction Control System. Shift backand forth between reverse and a forwardgear, spinning the wheels as little aspossible. Release the accelerator pedalwhile you shift, and press lightly on theaccelerator pedal when the transmissionis in gear. This will cause a rockingmotion that may free your vehicle.
