Shri Badiuz Zaman Ansari S/o Shri Habibur Rahman Ansari 47 years, was born at Varanasi in Uttar PradeShri He learnt handloom weaving from his father. He has been practising handloom weaving for 30 years.

He receives the National Award for excellence in handloom saree weaving.

Karuwa Jangla saree is the traditional saree of Banaras, woven with the combination of Karuwa and Fekuwa weaving techniques. Patterns are in colourful silk threads amidst the usual gold and silver motifs of the Brocade conventions. The design in Pallu and Border is influenced by Mughal style. Jangla pattern is widely spiralling and spreading with beautiful contrast gold leaves. The raw material used is pure silk and real zari.

Shri Mohd. Anees S/o. Late Shri Haji Mohd. Ibrahim was born on 02.10.1975 at Varanasi (U.P.). He learnt handloom weaving from Late Shri Mohd. Yunus. He has been practising handloom weaving for 26 years.


In Patli Pallu Saree, 2.5 mtrs. of body is woven with one pattern and the rest of the body is decorated with pattern like butti or jaal etc. In Banaras, weavers generally introduce variety of designs in the body. In this saree, two types of design i.e. Butti and Jaal have been used in the body by Karuwa technique.

He receives the National Award for excellence in handloom Tanchoi saree weaving.

This is an ancient craft practised since long. Varanasi has been known for weaving of traditional silk saree, specially “Brocade”. Brocades are characterized by its exquisite quality of silk, the fineness of weaving and the delicate motifs.

This is a combination of fekuwa and karuwa techniques of Varanasi. On Tanchoi ground, the butti has been woven by Karuwa technique. This saree is the fusion of two techniques.

Shri Nasruddin Ansari S/o Shri Madar Bux Ansari was born on 01.01.1962 at Kaithoon (Rajasthan). He learnt handloom weaving from his parent initially. He has been practising handloom weaving for 30 years.

He receives the National Award for excellence in handloom Kota Doria Saree weaving.

This is an ancient craft practised since ages. In this saree cotton, silk and real zari are used. The dyeing of yarn is done with azo free dyes. Jala technique is used for the weaving of this saree. It takes around 3 months to complete the saree. The design and technique speak the value of this unique piece.

Shri Abdul Majid S/o Shri Abdul Rashid was born on 31.08.1968 at Jaipur (Raj.). He learnt hand block printing from his father. He has been practising hand block printing for 25 years.

He receives the National Award for excellence in hand block printing.

Chanderi is woven in combination of silk and cotton yarn. To enhance the look of the saree, it is printed with mughal inspired block print design. Nine set of wooden blocks have been used to create this saree. Border of the saree is decorated with Mughal inspired design in 7 different colours. Similarly, the other parts are also worked upon.

Shri Suresh Chandra Chhipa S/o Shri Nandlal ji Chhipa was born on 01.07.1965 at Akola, Chittorgarh District, Rajasthan state. He learnt hand block printing from his father. He has been practising hand block printing for 37 years.

He receives the National Award for excellence in hand block printing.

It is one of the oldest techniques of printing the fabric. In this technique, wire block is used to print the fabric. The design pattern is in the form of dots, decorated all over the body.

For printing, the fabric is washed with clean water. It is dyed with Reactive Dyes, and then dried. Paste of Hydrosulphite, Zinc Oxide and Sabudana is prepared which is then printed with ‘Wire Block ‘and then it is spread in the Sun. For steaming, the cloth is dipped in big Drum for whole night and finally it is washed again with clean water.

Shri Mushtaq Ahmad Khan S/o Shri Ghulam Mohammad Khan was born on 30.11.1970 at Srinagar (J&K). He is a hereditary weaver. He has been practising handloom weaving for 24 years.

They receive the National Award for excellence in handloom Kani Shawl weaving.

Kani technique of weaving in Srinagar is world famous. It is most intricate and time consuming work. It needs a lot of patience to weave the piece. Pure Pashmina yarn is used as raw material to weave the sample. The yarn is hand spun and requires 290 tillis to weave. Total of 16 colours have been used to make this gorgeous piece of art. It took around 11 months to complete the piece.

Smt. S. Nungshitombi Devi W/o Shri Abhimeino Sharma was born on 01.03.1954 at Manipur. She learnt handloom weaving from her mother. She has been practising handloom weaving for 40 years.

She receives the National Award for excellence in handloom Tapestry weaving.

It is a hand-woven tapestry inspired by the astrological manuscript of Subika Laisaba. Subika, dealing with astrology and cosmology is an important text of the Manipuri intellectual tradition housed at the Manipur State Archives in Imphal. The raw materials used to develop this tapestry are Muga and Mulberry silk yarn. There are fifty seven motifs woven in fifty seven units, based on folk art.

Shri Bhaktaraj Meher S/o Shri Tikeswar Meher was born on 30.01.1954 at Bargarh (Odisha). He learnt handloom weaving from his father. He has been practising handloom weaving for 42 years.

He receives the National Award for excellence in handloom Tie & Dye saree weaving.

The craft man has dedicated this design named ‘Tribeni Sudhamayee’ as an offering to the holiest and momentous event on Earth. It is believed that holy dip in the Mahakumbha, Tribeni Sangam purifies the Soul and washes away all sins. The Body of the divine wear is designed in three rows of Ikat art in three different colours. Green (Ganga), White (Saraswati), Blue (Yamuna) representing the three rivers. Motifs like crocodiles, turtles and swans are used beautifully to make the saree a unique one.
