“Preserving the Past — Pioneering the Future”

Dear Club Members: Welcome to the 2016 - 2018 administration. We started off with a big bang in Granbury during our Spring Convention, and we will be working hard and playing hard for the next two years. I am so excited about bringing back the Traveling Team! It is so important for all the Executive Committee to meet the membership of our great organization at all levels. I was so excited during our GFWC Texas installation to include the club presidents in the processional. As we all know,

without our club presidents there wouldn’t be districts, and without our districts, we would not have a state organization. During the last administration it was emphasized that working together we can show concern and deeply appreciate the involvement of our membership. I believe that this was accomplished, and I am working to continue Sandi’s legacy of bringing joy back to our federated friendships. Our members are bonding and really feeling the sister-hood that GFWC brings us. We will be working to raise funds and to bring awareness regarding the domestic vio-lence and child abuse in our society. My president’s project is Canine Companions for Independence. The joy on the faces of the recipients of these special dogs is price-less. We will also be recognizing our Veterans in some special ways. There is nothing more rewarding than to see the face of a Veteran when you thank them for their ser-vice! We must work hard to increase our membership. I believe that the way to pioneering our future is with our Junior and Juniorette Clubs. Contact your local junior high and high school counselors and get these ladies involved in forming clubs. When you begin to form your Juniorette club, you need to understand that these young ladies will have to have someone bring them to their meeting; and what better way to begin a Junior club, but with the mothers of the Juniorettes. Every member needs to make a special effort to invite at least one of your friends or acquaintances to your club meeting. TFWC DISTRICT PAST PRESIDENTS 1902-1960

Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs was founded in 1897, joined GFWC in 1899 and by 1902 had devised a sys-tem whereby all of the clubs in the great state of Texas could be fairly represented. The state was divided into five districts and each of the five had its own governing body with district presidents serving as vice-presidents of TFWC. As the organization grew so did the need for more districts. In 1915 a sixth district was added, followed by a sev-enth in 1923. With this addition the district presidents no longer served as vice-presidents of TFWC, but remained members of the Board of Directors. An eighth district was added in 1936 and in 1960 the state was realigned to include 14 districts bearing the names Alamo, Capitol, Caprock, Heart of Texas, Key, Magnolia, Mesquite, Pioneer, San Jacinto, Santa Rosa, South Tex-as, Top of Texas, Trinity, and Western. With the dissolving of Heart of Texas and Santa Rosa Districts in 2004 and 2006, the number of districts in Texas dropped to twelve. CAPITOL DISTRICT PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality

of life of patients and their families.

LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. We

are the voice for all blood cancer patients and we work to ensure access to treatments

for all blood cancer patients. As there are no meas of preventing or early screening for

most blood cancers, the LLS research agenda is focused on finding cures. LLS drives

research in areas of unmet medical need, and helps to bridge the gap between academ-

ic discovery and drug development. LLS identifies and funds the most promising blood

cancer research projects and forges partnerships with academic institutions, biotech-

nology and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate the development of new therapies.

As Caprock District President, I chose the Genie Farley Harriman Home for Women and Children as my special project. This very worthwhile center located west of Levelland, Texas is devoted to help-ing women with children better their lives and insure a future that will allow them to live in a safe environ-ment and provide a good home for their children. This center not only provides a safe home for the women and their children while the Mothers work toward a better future, it strives to help them reach their goals while teaching self-sufficiency and responsibility. MAGNOLIA DISTRICT PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT

Although the medical profession is making remarkable discoveries in cur-ing Cancer, it still touches all of our lives every year. If not in our family, then in our friends and fellow club women. Many of Magnolia District club women are very active in local American Cancer Society Relay for Life campaigns. They al-so continue to support U.T. MD Anderson Cancer Center.

One of our GFWC newest partners is St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The Magnolia District President’s Special Project will be collecting funds for St. Jude’s Research. Not only is St. Jude one of the leading cancer research facilit but they also are leading in many other types of research. My husband had to have a heart defibrillator implanted about 7 years ago. His device was developed, distributed and calibrated by St. Jude’s research em-ployees. So yes St. Jude’s hospital holds a special place in my heart. The club that collects and/or contributes the largest donations will receive Special recogni-tion at the Spring Convention each year of my tenure.

Days for Girls International is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has as its mission, “Creating a more dignified, free and educated world through access to lasting feminine hy-giene solutions,” and has as its vision, “Every girl and woman in the world with ready feasible access to quality sustainable hygiene and health edu-cation by 2022.” Every girl deserves education, safety and dignity during her menses. Without products, a girl can miss up to two months of educa-tion and opportunity every year and perhaps be exposed to sexual abuse in order to provide adequate hygiene products. Heart of Texas District Remembered

Because its members were unable to fill the leadership positions within the district, Heart of Texas District dissolved in 2004 and each remaining club was invited to affiliate with other dis-tricts. Two of those clubs, the DeLeon Shakespeare Club and the Literary and Service Club of Winters, chose to move their TFWC memberships to Mesquite District.

The Heritage Club of Comanche and the Comanche Study Club chose to join Pioneer Dis-trict. Ozona Woman’s League, San Angelo Woman’s Forum, and the Wimodausis Club of Sterling City now call Western District home.

PIONEER DISTRICT PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT

Pioneer Cares: The District president’s

special project is collecting donations

for the Ada Carey Center and for other

domestic violence centers around our

district. We also plan to contribute to

Canine Companions for Independence,

our State Presidents’ project.

The Ada Carey Center is a domestic vi-

olence program protecting victims

from physical abuse, emotional abuse,

psychological abuse or verbal abuse.

They provide information on domestic

violence statistics, signs and cycles of

abuse, housing services, emergency

services, legal and financial services,

support groups for women, children

and families. The Ada Carey Center

through Mission Granbury is a non-

profit, volunteer driven organization

whose mission is to meet the critical

needs of domestic violence victims

through state and local collaborations.

Reports for this project should be sent

to the district chairman for GFWC Jun-

iors’ Special Project: Advocates for

Children Community Service Program.

Tribute to Santa Rosa District

Regrettably in 2006 Santa Rosa District disbanded due to the difficulty in securing leaders at the district level. They have long been a successful part of our Texas Federation. Several clubs have chosen to continue their affiliation with GFWC and TFWC by joining two other districts within the state. The Adelphian Club of Crowell has become a member of Mesquite District and hope-fully will continue its sponsorship of the Adelphian Juniorette Club. The Burkburnett Study Club of Burkburnett, The Amity Study Club and the Twenty-three Study Club of Iowa Park, and the Women’s Forum of Wichita Falls have moved their memberships to Pioneer District. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the many years of service invested by the women of Santa Rosa. They will be missed.

As President of San Jacinto Dis-trict, t to me is the most important Special Project to me is the awful word, CANCER! I belong to this special club, and I know of so many more who have been members longer than I. Cancer is not a respecter of age, color, religion, or choice. It hits with a jolt! Many years of research have led to new treatments which are now available, but there are so many peo-ple who have no help. Most do not keep appointments for check-ups. The medical check-ups are so very important, because cancer will creep up and strike. Many tests have been formulated for those 50 to 60 years of age, and these are not as difficult as in the past. PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR. What is more important than your health? To be a member of the “C” club, you must have or have had some form of cancer. I have been a mem-ber since 2012. I do not want any more of our GFWC family to be mem-bers of this horrible club. Please visit your doctor, see any specialists he suggests and have the tests required. It is important to see if you have any cancer cells in your body. Celebrate your life, you have a choice!

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of its founder legendary enter-tainer, Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. Unlike any other hospital, the majority of funding comes from individual contributions. And thanks to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Tribute to Top of Texas District

Regrettably in 2015 Top of Texas District disbanded due to the difficulty in securing leaders at the district level. The have long been a suc-cessful part of our Texas Federation. Several members have chosen to continue their affiliation with GFWC and TFWC by retaining their membership in the Past District President’s Club. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the many years of ser-vice invested by the women of Top of Texas. They will be missed.

General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is proud of its long association with the GFWC, which has gener-

ously supported CCI for many years through its Home Life Department. Each year, Canine Companions at-

tends the GFWC International Convention.

The GFWC includes more than 6,500 clubs in the United States and more than 20 countries. Its members sup-

port the arts, preserve natural resources, promote education, encourage healthy lifestyles, stress civic in-

volvement, and work toward world peace and understanding.

Our clubs have a long and impressive history of serving in our communities, supporting great causes and nurturing our world. We founded many of our public libraries and have led the fight against domestic violence. As we celebrate the many successes of the work we have done and the causes we support, we shall also take on new challenges, new projects, and continue to grow our membership, sharing our vision for bet-ter communities by our service and leadership through our women’s clubs. WESTERN DISTRICT PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT

The Western District President's Special Project is St. Jude's Hospital. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and de-feats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. And families never receive a bill from St. Jude. Treatment, travel, housing and food is all paid for—because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. St. Jude continues the vision of its founder, Danny Thomas, that no child is denied treatment based on race, religion, or a family’s ability to pay. By sharing knowledge freely and exchang-ing ideas openly, it inspires more collaboration between doctors and researchers worldwide, and, as a result, more lifesaving treatments for children everywhere. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent since it opened 50 years ago. St. Jude is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90 percent in the next decade ST. Please note that there is only one GFWC chairman for each of the six GFWC Community Service Programs. All projects are reported to that chairman, including any projects with GFWC partners. Below is a list of who uses which forms. A. Clubs: Deadline: February 1st. 1. Person preparing report: GFWC Texas Club Level Reporting/Entry Cover Sheet. Send to

District chairman. Instructions are at bottom of form. 2. Club president: GFWC Texas Statistical Report Form: the club president completes this

Partnership Projects are the organizations listed within each GFWC Program and Special Project area with whom GFWC has established a formal relationship and mutual understanding.

Number of Projects is the numerical account of the programs and projects initiated and participated in by the clubs in your State.

Volunteer Hours is the amount of time that members worked on club approved programs and projects. Dollars Donated is the monetary amount given to programs and projects. In Kind Donations reflect the monetary value for goods provided to programs and projects.

1. FORM: No limitation on size or type of yearbook.

2. COVER CONTEST: Covers will be judged separately. Booklet or permanent binder. If a permanent binder is used,

the first page inside the binder will be considered the cover. Cover information shall include: name of club, town, district, membership category, current year, cover category (indicate design theme) and actual design . The cover categories are : America, Volunteer, Federation, Texas, Whimsical. To enter, send one extra yearbook marked “JUDGE COVER”.

GFWC LEADS (Leadership Education And Development Seminar) OBJECTIVE: To identify GFWC members who have the potential to assume leadership positions beyond the club level and provide them with the skills, confidence and commitment to become future Federation leaders. Leadership is the key to building membership, preserving organizational continuity, enhancing image and identity, and maintaining sound fiscal policies. The GFWC Leadership Education And Development Seminar (LEADS) is designed to develop, nurture and sustain a broad and deep pool of capable GFWC leaders well into the future. The program was initiated in 2002 for the purpose of finding, training and encouraging clubwomen at the grassroots level to step up, pursue and accept leadership opportunities at all levels of Federation. LEADS is held once a year on the day before the official opening of the GFWC Annual International Convention. It is a full day (8 am-5pm) of activities, including breakfast and lunch. The LEADS agenda may include: ● Presentations on conflict resolution and mediation; public speaking; time management; parliamentary procedure ● Explanations of GFWC resources, programs, materials, assistance ● Discussions on GFWC policies, protocol, parliamentary law ● Tips and techniques for pursuing leadership opportunities Each state fed-eration is responsible for: promoting LEADS, distributing and soliciting applications from interested members, establishing a selection process based on standard criteria, and selecting one participant to represent the state. Participant information is forwarded to GFWC Headquarters by March 1. TO APPLY: Copy and submit to the TFWC LEADS representative the LEADS Application Form found on the reverse side of this page. TFWC Outstanding Clubwoman Volunteer Contest

PURPOSE:

To recognize today’s clubwoman for her commitment to Federation and its ideals through involve-ment in club, district, TFWC and GFWC programs/projects, to recognize her leadership abilities and to honor her for outstanding volunteer service in her community and world.

ELIGIBILITY:

● Nominee must be a member of a PER CAPITA dues paying club, in good standing with TFWC. ● Nominee SHALL NOT be an elected officer of the district. ● Nominee SHALL NOT be a member, elected or appointed, of the TFWC Executive Committee or a Past State President.

ENTRY RULES:

1. Each per capita dues paying club, in good standing with TFWC, shall be entitled to ONE nominee. 2. Nominee shall be nominated for her service, leadership and volunteerism in support of a GFWC / TFWC (or club sponsored) program/project for the current year (Jan. 1—Dec. 31) 3. The nomination, which shall not exceed five (5) pages, shall include:

MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY The Member-at-Large Club shall be for persons interested in retaining membership in GFWC and GFWC Texas after their club has disbanded. GFWC members that have moved into a town that has no GFWC / GFWC Texas club may also join.

MEMBERSHIP DUES Those desiring membership shall annually pay all applicable dues to GFWC Texas. Dues are payable on or before July 1 of each successive year and will contin-ue to reflect any changes to the GFWC / GFWC Texas standard per capita member rates. Dues include GFWC and GFWC Texas dues and subscriptions to both the GFWC Clubwoman Magazine and the Texas Clubwoman Magazine.
