157Annual Report 2012–2013

Overview

Front cover: Left: The Governor-General visits Antarctica on 5 February 2013.

Back cover: The Governor-General pays her respects at the grave of Sister Verdun Sheah, at the Rabaul (Bita Paka) War Cemetery on 23 April 2013.

Inside front: Left: The view across Lake Burley Griffin and Black Mountain Tower from the grounds of Government House; Right: The view from the verandah of Admiralty House towards Sydney Harbour.

Inside back: On 5 December 2012, 53 Office staff left their desks behind for several hours to don red caps and help with the biggest event of the year, the Governor-General’s Christmas party for children. All primary schools in Canberra and the surrounding area were invited to join in. Seventy per cent of schools were represented on the day, with the crowd swelling to around 1,200 students, teachers and carers. The Vista Lawn and the dry land area of the grounds were dotted with rides, jumping castles and other fun activities including a magic show, a petting zoo and face painting. Roving entertainment was provided by Questacon scientists and Kip Koala, and local vintage car enthusiasts chauffeured children around a special circuit within the grounds. The Red Caps cooked and served sausage sandwiches, jelly cups and cold drinks, manned pedestrian crossings and queues, helped children on and off pony rides and flagged down a Navy helicopter with Santa Claus on board.
