May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, healthy and successful New Year! The start of the year 2011 has already seen a number of new exciting activities develop within GGSB. In the month of January, we hosted no less than three executive education programs coming from Brighton (UK), Kuwait and Melbourne Australia. We can truly say that we now cover the world with our activities! All of these programs involved both class work and visits to a number of leading global companies located in and around Grenoble. The students‘ evaluations confirm that this is another of our successful activities and we have many more of these programmes planned for the year.

January is also a month when we accept a new intake of students. We have added to our numbers again this year; 41 new students joined the January intake of the MIB and an additional 60 students joined the undergraduate program for the Spring semester. Work on the GGSB Gala, to be held on Friday, March 25 here at the School, is progressing fast. This event will take place as usual after the annual graduation ceremony. The theme this year will be based on photography, thanks to a sponsorship by Photomaton (another local company!), who have kindly offered to donate five digital cameras as prizes for a photographic competition to be organized by the students. You will be learning more details about this from Monique Garnier, our International Student Services Manager. I hope to see many of you there on this annual occasion. Finally we are extending our activities in the Middle East as we opened our Cairo Office in December and a consortium MBA program in Riyad, Saudi Arabia. We are hoping that the current unrest in this part of the world will soon be resolved and that this is not affecting our graduates who are based there.

Let‘s carry on being as creative as ever! As our Dean Judith Bouvard said ―2011 is already a very exciting year for GGSB‖! GGSB enlarges its activities with greater offers of programs and we definitely cover the world! The January intake 2011 has been the start of a new adventure for more than 100 students in MIB and undergrad programs. With the aid of the BIB students, the welcome desk has been a great help and success!

You can lead a horse to water…. but you can’t make it drink! But what about business partners?

Students on the MSc in Management Consulting at Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB) are going on an equestrian adventure to master best business practices.

Through this Equine Ethology training, otherwise known as Natural

Horsemanship or Horse Whispering, students will study a horse‘s innate behavior

and metaphorically apply what they learn to the business world.

Based on the home study program ‗The Seven Games of Natural Horsemanship‖

developed and introduced to Europe by Pat Parelli in the 1980‘s, GGSB is experimenting this unique initiation program, entitled ―HORSEPLAY‖, that applies

the basic principles of Parelli‘s Natural Horsemanship to the field of Management

Consulting.

With the help and guidance of a trained professional in Equine Ethology, the budding consultants will interact with a

herd of horses in semi-liberty to explore the fundamental notions of respect, trust and non-violent communication and

apply the concept of the 7 Games to leadership in the business environment.

The games unfold as a sequence (1. Friendly Game,2. Porcupine Game,3. Driving Game,4. Yo-Yo Game,5. Circling

Game,6. Sideways Game,7. Squeeze Game) where the horse, with the help of its leader, is required to adapt to

situations such as being confronted with a noise or a scary object (Friendly Game) or crossing a narrow path between

a fence & a tree (Squeeze Game).

In the business world these situations can metaphorically translate as learning to understand how to gain the trust of

your partners or how to encourage them to surpass themselves and deal with uncomfortable or difficult situations to

which they would naturally be resistant.

As Nancy Armstrong, Director of Studies at GGSB and designer of the Horseplay concept comments ―In the natural

world, the horse is a prey – it will flee anything that it perceives as unknown or difficult. It also has an innate reflex of opposition.

We all know that we cannot force a 500 kilo beast to do what it does not want to do – one can only suggest and encourage it to do

so, by giving clear commands in a language that the horse understands, and by earning its trust. I personally believe that

leadership in business should follow the same principles.‖

GGSB Schneider Electric Corporate MBA: Exec Ed beats the clock!

"If the camel once gets his nose in a tent, the body will soon follow." Saudi folklore

December 2nd

: Exec Ed and Schneider Electric opens in Riyadh, the Saudi capital,

a first for GGSB and maybe the first of a new species of MBA programs, delivered

in –company. The program content is the same as our other MBA program

(FT/PT) but the group of students is drawn exclusively from 3 companies:

Schneider Electric, and their two partners Systech and Mesco. Systech is a local

player in the water infrastructure sector and experiencing exponential growth

currently. The program also innovates as the first degree-awarding program

managed by Exec Ed with support from the GGSB MBA PD …long may this

cooperation continue.

The Riyadh students who are from all over the Middle East region (including

the Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan…) look forward to meeting GGSB Alumni in the

future, either within Schneider Electric or with company partners

“Mind Training for Enhanced Business Performance” The Iris Map Conceived & Presented by Ann Papoulis Adamovic, MBA graduate

Ann Adamovic, will offer a very special workshop during the personal development week for MBA on and offsite in February. This workshop proposes a means to develop creativity and imagination, which is an important dimension of business in the 21st century. The Iris Map offers you a means of navigation through your internal resources that helps you to unleash your full potential. Creativity and imagination are desirable faculties for doing business in the 21

st century.

The mine of these faculties is inside of your mind and body.

Concept Doing business involves a series of dances, between leaders and followers, between producers and consumers and inside of your own mind, between your rational and intuitive capacities. To dance well, you need a technique, a means of cultivating and directing an active imagination. Ann has been working with dancers, actors and opera singers for over 20 years. The tools allowed me to understand my personality through colors, images and ideas. We entered the training very easily, as it is quite interactive and leaves much room for play and the discovery of oneself and the other participants. ―The Iris Map workshop was a very great and different experience. It allowed me to understand my states of mind, and how they affect the way I achieve tasks, in addition to helping me discover new states of mind. I learned how to adapt my state of mind in order to be more efficient in performing personal, professional or group tasks. While this requires a lot of personal effort to be able to achieve this shift, the simplicity and association with real life situations and metaphors that was given in the workshop make it simple, and quite enjoyable. Alumni offer jobs Danielle Nowell, MIB 27, is pleased to announce that following her internship with

Capgemini Consulting in Chicago, USA she will begin fulltime employment with the

company starting May 2011. Danielle applied for an internship with Capgemini

Consulting through the GGSB Career site. She spent 1 month training in Dallas, Texas

and 6 months working as an HR Analyst for the company in Chicago, Illinois. The

experience allowed her to continue to work in an international environment and gain

great exposure to Human Resources and Consulting. On a daily basis Danielle

interacted with top level executives, performed detailed data analysis, created

presentations and proposed new initiatives around recruitment and social sourcing. The

internship also provided useful inputs to her Final Management Project. Danielle looks

forward to joining Capgemini as a strategy consultant, where she will help fortune 500

companies address concerns in the areas of Human Resource Transformation and

Change Management. She is also pleased to announce that a former MIB

classmate of hers, William Bulla, has been selected from a large pool of

applicants to take over her internship position.

William Bulla, who came to GGSB on exchange from Salisbury University, returned to the United States to

complete his MBA. During this time, he was employed at BEACON, the consulting and community outreach arm of the

business school. He originally discovered the internship position through the GGSB Careers Newsletter and contacted

Danielle to inquire about the position. After an extensive interview process, William was selected as Danielle‘s

replacement and will begin training in January 2011 in Chicago, USA.

Hasan Dag, MIB graduate will be present representing Facebook at the International

recruitment fair on 10 March.

He will offer jobs and internships for both French and international profiles!

Professional Advisory Board

Because of RNCP regulations, we now need to organize once a year a comité de

perfectionnement where we discuss along with representatives from external companies

and our GGSB alumni our program‘s content and objectives to ensure they are in line with

the requirements of today‘s job market.

We now have 4 programs that need to go through this process: the MIB, MBA and MSc

Business Development under the certification ―Manager international‖ and the MSc in

Finance under the certification ―Manager financier‖. The other programs go through the

Professional Advisory Board which has a similar intent and is held every other year (last one

held in February 2009). We combined both instances and met with 10 local company

representatives on Wednesday November 24th:

Dean Thierry Grange co-chair of new AACSB Blue Ribbon Committee

In the increasingly dynamic and complex environment of business,

management education is being challenged to keep pace. It is a time when the

repercussions of the financial crisis are prevalent, while the globalization of

business, advancements in technology, and the quest for innovation and

sustainability are driving change in business schools.

With this, AACSB International announced the formation of a new Blue Ribbon

Committee on Accreditation Quality (BRC). This global committee of business

and business school experts will evaluate the state of readiness of AACSB‘s

accreditation standards and processes to ensure the alignment of business

practice and management education. The committee also will set appropriate

expectations for quality and continuous improvement which business schools

must continue to demonstrate in the future.

―It is imperative that business schools prepare students for both the challenges and opportunities in the world of

business,‖ said Andrew J. Policano, Dean of The Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California,

Irvine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AACSB International. ―The establishment of the Blue Ribbon

Committee will allow AACSB and leaders of business schools worldwide to thoroughly review the global environment

of business, and make certain accreditation standards and processes effectively align with the many factors impacting

businesses today and in the future.‖ The BRC will perform a comprehensive review of the AACSB accreditation

standards, eligibility criteria, and the accreditation process. Members of the committee represent a cross section of the

AACSB membership; including accredited schools, schools in the accreditation process, and representation from non-

education institutional members. The committee is being co-chaired by Thierry Grange, Dean and Director General of

Grenoble Ecole de Management (France) and Richard E. Sorensen, Dean of the Pamplin College of Business at

Virginia Tech (USA).

―As AACSB works to address the rising global demand for accreditation, it is important for us to consider diverse

models of education while encouraging innovation,‖ said John J. Fernandes, President and Chief Executive Officer of

AACSB International. ―With the forces impacting businesses worldwide, it is the responsibility of AACSB to evaluate

accreditation standards and processes to ensure business schools maintain their relevance and value to

businesses—locally, regionally and globally.‖

About Thierry Grange

Thierry GRANGE, serves as Dean and Professor of Management of Technology and

Entrepreneurship at Grenoble Ecole de Management. He studied Mechanical

Engineering, Business Administration and Political Science, in Germany and in France. In

1985, he graduated from the HEC-HARVARD designed ―International Teacher Program‖ in

Boston.

Thierry started his professional life as an international industrial project manager in

developing countries (Africa, Asia) building cemeteries, steel works and paper mills. He

became an entrepreneur and founder of BFG/motorcycle manufacturer, which he ran for 6

years. In 1984, he changed sectors but kept his entrepreneurial values. He was the co-

founder of Grenoble Ecole de Management, one of the top 6 French Business Schools

(Grandes Ecoles) and top 20 European Institutions.

Thierry has published more than 60 scholarly and professional works, including journal articles, books, conference

papers and book chapters in the area of Technology Management and Business Education.

In April 2009, he was honoured by IAMOT (International Association for Management of Technology) with the

Academic Achievement Award for the 25 years spent to promote teaching and research activities in Management of

Technology

He has been awarded the Outstanding Industrial Medal (French Society for Industrial Excellence).

He is Honorary Norwegian Consul for South-East of France. He has been awarded Officer of the Royal Norwegian

Order of Merit.

GGSB MSc Business Development ranked 3rd best Masters of Science in France

The MOCI - Moniteur du commerce international - ranked the program 3rd in their latest ranking of international commerce programs. Established in 1883, the MOCI is the oldest magazine entirely dedicated

to foreign trade and aims to help international commerce actors to make

the best choices.

MOCI states: ―To boost graduate recruitment, the Business Development

program of Grenoble Graduate School of Business (3rd in our ranking), a new recruit in the MSc family, works around

the needs of Michelin, its partner since the creation of the program in 2009. Best practices and internationalisation, the

ingredients which make this MSc.‖

Students on the MSc Business Development program benefit from intensive training – live business cases – delivered

by Michelin throughout the year.

Last year the training resulted in field work on Michelin‘s business development in India.

This year, students will be going to China to study similar activities.

During their course of study, students will also examine the cultural and managerial

differences, as well as the best Chinese negotiation techniques.

They will arrive in China with the aim of offering concrete proposals for the development

of Michelin‘s activities in the country – proposals that will then be detailed in their end-of-

program thesis and viva.

Students will be examining two cases this year:

1) In order to build a robust geographical Michelin footprint in China, what would be your

strategy?

2) How can Michelin become an eco-friendly industrial company in China?

The compulsory Chinese Residency will take place from the 25th February to the 6th March 2011 in Shanghai, Tianjin

and Beijing.

The class of 35 students will also have the opportunity of visiting several businesses and attending lectures on

Chinese business culture.

3rd Edition of Grenoble Geopolitics Festival From 24

th to 27

th March, Grenoble Ecole de management in association with

the Presse Universitaire de France and Anteios will host the 3rd

edition of

Grenoble Geopolitics festival.

During the 4 day event, leading experts in geopolitical, economic, and

managerial issues will address this year‘s topic through debates, conferences,

roundtables and workshops.

It will bring together leading specialists and main players interested in

geopolitics such as teachers, researchers, business managers, students,

military and senior officials in order to combine intellectual analysis and

practical applications.

2011 topic: A state of emergencies: today’s risks and challenges’.

Are we living in a society where risks are more dangerous, more immediate and are more frequent than previously?

Although unproven it is certainly how the vast majority feels.

At the other end, it is certain that we are seeing new types of risks, further away, more brutal and more unexpected.

Globalization explains that events happening in far away places can impact us; the complexity of our economies and

administrations makes them more sensitive to the slightest disturbance, political balances are breaking, technical

progress increases the danger and makes its effects more worrying. Risks are constantly changing and renewing

themselves.

The Festival will look at current hazards: environmental, crime, computer, economic, political, social ... It will focus on

the geopolitical approach and unstable areas. It will analyze the consequences of these new risks for businesses and

governments, researchers and analysts, as well as for ordinary citizens. It will seek to identify good practices to be

implemented to determine these risks, but also take control.

The aim of our thinking is not to refuse any risk and to become overly cautious. The very fact of undertaking, leading and deciding is already assuming a risk. The Festival will therefore look for the positive aspects of risk and risk taking, the latter being seen as a challenge that forces us to excel.

Presenting a research article in video: Managing a business model portfolio

Valérie Sabatier, a teacher & researcher at Grenoble EM's Strategy Department, explains the research article "From Recipe to dinner: Managing a business model portfolio" in an entertaining, understandable format.

Considering the different business models of four European biotechnology companies, we

explore their business model portfolios, defined as the range of different ways they deliver

value to their customers to ensure both their medium term viability and future

development.

A firm's portfolio can help balance the levels of promise and interdependency with other

firms of its different business models, and help it articulate and finance its activities in the

medium run to ensure idiosyncrasy to protect its future health.

Is your social life in hand?”

Organized by the MSc Management Consulting program students

February the 24th is coming closer and closer. This will be the date for our first Conference on ―Mobile Devices: Is your social life in hand?‖ But let´s start from the beginning and introduce ourselves. We are 15 students studying MSc Management Consulting at Grenoble Graduate School of Business, in its first year of existence. What makes us special is our unique multicultural team. We are 15 students coming from 13 different countries, with an age range from 22 till 38. Working in this group is not always that simple, yet we form a great team whose diversity is what enables us to achieve great potential.

Planning such a conference is quite challenging. First we have a very limited budget; we depend on sponsors and on GGSB to support us with the logistics. Additionally since our conference will be held in English, this limits the potential audience for our event. We hope to go beyond the student and faculty body and wish to include everyone interested in this topic wishing to gain more knowledge about the mobile industry. With our Professor Pat Brans, who is an expert in this industry, we are organizing a conference on Mobile Devices. The mobile industry is already a part of our everyday life and its influence is becoming increasingly significant. We wonder if people are really aware of what they are using. Do people actually know how far the reach of Social Media actually is? Not to mention the ever-present question arising in this context: is it safe to use? Is our privacy protected? These key issues and more will be discussed in our conference. We hope to address the big dilemmas - and answer some of questions - arising from this new trend. We have invited experts in the area of mobile technology, social media, ethics and location based services to participate. With short, but precise presentations, those experts will bring the subject closer to everyone and give us the chance to ask specific questions during the round table discussion.

Among the speakers present: Kelly Rigotti, GGSB graduate in MSc marketing, a Marketing and Communications Consultant and an expert in online branding and web 2.0 ergonomics. Kelly will discuss how social networks are becoming mobile. Sharon Crost, an expert in reputation management and online commerce and a Marketing and Social Media Consultant, will bring us closer to a set of guidelines for handling the risks behind social interactions going mobile. Marie-Paule Odini is the Chief Technologist at Hewlett-Packard‘s Communications & Media and an expert in the area of online branding, innovation and security programs. At the conference, she will talk specifically about social media used on

mobile phones and the technology behind it. We are all using mobile devices. Isn‘t each of us wondering a little about just how much our social life is in our hands? Join us to find out!

The conference and round-table will take place on the 24th of February 2011 from 6 to 8 pm at Grenoble Graduate School of Business. The conference will be followed by a cocktail reception. We are looking forward to surprising you!

Making the Case for Equality

For International Women's Day on 8 March 2011 Mark Smith, associate professor at

GGSB, has been invited to be the keynote speaker at an event in Brussels organised by

the EFTA countries to talk about how ―Equality Pays‖. Mark teaches human resource

management and international human resource management on various programmes

across GGSB. The economic crisis has led to cuts in many social programmes promoting

equality across Europe with a resulting threat to progress against equality targets.

However, the work Mark has been doing at Grenoble shows how gender equality can be a

key factor for economic growth since women‘s undervaluation and underutilisation on the

labour market represents a loss to the economy. Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway have

agreed €1788.5 million contribution to reduce economic and social disparities in the

European Economic Area and gender equality will be a key priority for the period up to

2014.

Leadership – Managing for Values

The next GGSB conference will be held on Tuesday April 5 at 6:00 p.m. in Room C 130 Our speaker will be Professor James Hoopes from Babson College, USA. James Hoopes is Distinguished Professor of History at Babson College. His latest book is "Americans Dreaming: Corporate Concepts from the Great Depression to the Global Economy." The author of half a dozen other books on American history, James Hoopes has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and other funding agencies. His paper, "Managing a Riot," won the Paul Hersey Award for the best paper on leadership at the 2000 meeting of the Academy of Management. He has taught in both Europe and Asia. Areas of expertise in the field of History are: History of Management, History of Ideas and Business History.

Professor Hoopes is also the author of ―Hail to the CEO: The Failure of George W. Bush and the Cult of Moral Leadership‖.

"In this short but tightly argued work, Hoopes presents a clear thesis: George W. Bush has misunderstood and misused his moral authority as president….Hoopes argues that a misguided moral superiority animates decision making in the Bush White House, blinding them to the perils of abusing power….Highly recommended. Last April, the Center for Managerial and Personal Development (CDPM) was asked by the GGSB management to design and implement a conference program for the international students ‗on site‘. The CDPM has assisted GGSB students for a year by setting up one-to-one individual sessions relating to personal development issues such as self-awareness, career guidance advice, resume/CV and cover letter preparation, recruitment interview guidance and also occasionally by giving assistance of a more personal or psychological nature. Furthermore, the CDPM has extended its services to include workshops and conferences designed to meet the specific needs of the international students. These have led to themes as varied as « Intercultural Issues», « Stress Management », « Non-violent Communication», « Job application in French», « Successfully attend recruitment fair». Since September 2010, each of these themes has been covered with the aid of professionals including: European recruitment managers, human resources managers from International organizations, conference speakers with international negotiating skills and

experience and export trade consultants. Students will continue to receive this support until April 2011. Here is the program for the coming weeks:

3 & 4 February: Individual coaching sessions (MBA, Msc Finance students)

―Since last year GGSB has opened the MBA specializations to professionals who would like to obtain a Certificate in one of the following areas: Business Intelligence, Marketing, Finance, Global Management, Management Consulting (Diploma in Management Consulting), Project Management, Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. The 2011 Certificates will start at the end of February and applications are now closed. GGSB Alumni benefit from a 25% discount on these programs. A couple MBA alumni have already taken this opportunity to follow a second specialization with us.

GGSB also runs a couple Summer Programs opened to MBA from partner schools and Alumni. This year 3 courses will be offered:

- Innovation Management – from May 18 to 28 - Entrepreneurship – from May 29 to June 9 - Energy Management – from May 29 to June 9

Finally, we are currently preparing a new ―MBA top-up program‖, which will be advertised soon. The objective of this program is to offer MBA alumni a one week intensive program that addresses some of the current strategic and managerial issues. we will be organizing a very informal but none the less very professional ―apéro‖ ―Get In Touch Stay In Touch event‖ in Grenoble among our Grenoble Alumni Community:

On Friday 26 November 2010; it was our first networking event and significant success with 38 participants from Alumni intake 2! Also present: GGSB MBA Program Director M. Phil Eyre, Igor Belyavsky local MBA Program Director, the local coordinator, Julia and Monique Garnier, GGSB International Student Service Manager, The objective is to increase my visibility and knowledge among the off-sites and provide visibility to our network

It was the opportunity for each participant to introduce themselves to each other, to have a presentation by Monique Garnier of our GEM and GGSB network in the world followed by the presentation of our guest speaker: Cedric d’Halluin, manager of Spenglerfox for Russia on the topic ―An Executive Search Industry Insight and the Importance of Social Networks‖ His presentation was followed by an open discussion to offer a chance to everyone to share experience, opinions and expertise. Cedric‘s presentation was effective and relevant. There is a shortage of qualified and experienced Russian managers and the country‘s activity at least here in Moscow and In St Petersburg is growing quickly. The job market is much better than in 2009. The conclusion was that it is good to be young in Moscow! It was a great opportunity to learn from each other, to meet with a recruitment specialist who can help with their career plans and networking. It was very insightful! Only one nationality was present! Finally, here are the eagerly expected photos and movie.

GGSB around the world - Dubai: “Meet the Deans” On November 30, 2010, We made the most of Thierry Grange and Judith Bouvard‘s presence at a conference in Dubai to arrange a cocktail Networking event, 15 of our Alumni were present at this first networking event for ESC and GGSB Alumni. We should soon have an ambassador in this area!

MIB 28 good-bye party! On December 17, 2010, the full class of 41 students was present for on a snowy evening up to La Bastille‘s restaurant! Friendly and moving party with a few awards to some of them. Who will become a millionaire? To be continued...

Cairo Office Inauguration

The inaugural conference of the new GGSB Office was held on December 8, 2010 in Cairo with the support of the French Chamber of Commerce in Egypt. About 40 persons attended the presentation, with a mix of academic and corporate representatives, as well as alumni and prospective students. John Antonios is now officially representing GGSB in Egypt and has already initiated contacts with local universities (ongoing discussions for an MIB program) and with some companies for Executive Education programs.
