M.A. in Global Human Development

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University hosts one of the nation’s newest and most innovative master’s degree programs on global development. The Master of Arts in Global Human Development is a two-year degree designed to prepare graduates to become innovators, problem-solvers, change-makers and leaders in the practice of development in the 21st century.

The Challenge

There is no greater challenge and opportunity in the 21st century than eliminating poverty in the world and enlarging the scope for all human beings to realize their capabilities. To be sure, great progress has been achieved — in life expectancy, health, education, living standards and all aspects of freedom. But much remains to be done — in Africa, in Asia, in Latin America and also in rich countries with their enduring pockets of deprivation. But poverty and deprivation are not destiny.

The challenges of global human development are com-plex; the opportunities are real and subject to rapid change. What worked to spur a “green revolution” in Asia has not worked in Africa. But there are new technologies to expand food production and strengthen food security. What worked 40 years ago to propel eco-nomic progress will not work today. Markets are more complex; technologies more diverse and far reaching; capital is available globally and globalization itself has created unprecedented opportunities and challenges of its own. Those who led development work a half century ago — primarily governments and international institutions — are now joined by and in some cases led by non-governmental organizations, foundations and, increasingly, private enterprises, social impact investors and entrepreneurs.

The Master’s in Global Human Development is designed to prepare future development practitioners for lives of change and lives as change agents in this dynamic and important field.

The Curriculum

The Global Human Development curriculum is rigorous and comprehensive; core courses cover a range of topics including the economics of development, politics and social change, program design and implementation, evaluation, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, financing, management and technology and innova-tion. Elective courses give students the opportunity to develop a regional or sectoral specialization and provide students with a wealth of practical develop-ment experience. To complement their coursework, students are required to complete a GHD funded summer field project overseas with a public, private or not-for-profit development organization. Skills clinics, regular contact with development practitioners, innovators and social entrepreneurs, and internships will prepare students for careers in development prac-tice in the 21st century.

Co-Curricular Opportunities

Washington, D.C. is a unique setting for development practitioners, and the Master’s in Global Human Development takes full advantage of these opportuni-ties through internships with development organiza-tions, guest lectures by leaders in the development field, mentorships by leading development practitioners, site-visits to development organizations and off-site workshops on development issues and innovation.

Career Development

Career advising is an integral part of each student’s experience. The goal of the Master’s in Global Human Development is to give students an excellent ground-ing in development practice and to help them take the next steps toward a challenging and rewarding career after graduation. Through career advis-ing, mentorships, skills clinics, meetings with development professionals and internships, the Master’s in Global Human Development will equip students with the skills, experiences and contacts to be the change-makers in development in the 21st century.
