Glenthorne Celebrates OFSTED Success!

Staff and pupils at the school have been celebrating OFSTED success after the school was

judged to be outstanding by OFSTED.

Glenthorne was inspected by OFSTED on 30th/31st May 2012. The report was published in June and we are delighted to announce that the school has been judged outstanding in all five categories. Inspectors recognised and celebrated the school’s achievements, prais-

ing the school's “relentless drive for realising the highest academic standards for each stu-dent” and teachers’ “high expectations”. Achievement was judged to be outstanding with “students making exceptionally rapid and sustained progress”. Teaching was judged to be outstanding and inspectors highlighted the

“wonderful opportunities” offered by the school both in and out of the classroom. Behaviour was judged to be outstanding and the report identified pupils’ exceptional cour-tesy and respect.

Leadership was also judged to be outstanding and inspectors praised the school’s “very inclusive environment, where success is conspicuous and valued by students, parents, carers and staff alike”.

Celebrating success at Awards Evening! Parents, staff and governors gathered together for the school’s annual Awards Evening on 20th June 2012 to

celebrate pupils’ success and achievements. The school community was joined by the Mayor and special guest speaker, Nick Gillingham MBE: Olympic Silver

and Bronze medallist, World Champion and former record-holder for the 100m and 200m breaststroke. It proved to be a wonderful celebration of the effort and achievements of many of our pupils who have worked so hard over the past year. It was an emotional evening too with the presentation of the school’s special awards: Jack Dandy was awarded the Brisley Award for the most outstanding contribution to the performing arts; George

Hook was presented with the Luke Plowright Cup for commitment to school Sport and PE; Grace Cann was

awarded the Josephine Mould Trophy for determination to succeed despite adversity; Emily Bennett was awarded the Cookie Award for kindness, presented for the first time this year in memory of Mr Cook.

There were other highlights too, including a huge round of applause for Joe Mann for seven years of 100% attendance and excellent performances by the school band featuring Kiera Maguire and the choir featuring Amelia Langley.

The evening culminated in an inspirational speech by Nick Gillingham who told his story of his development as a swimmer and how he had had to swim ‘round the world’ to win his world championship gold medal. He extolled the virtues of effort and encouraged pupils to do what he did, compete against their own personal best and be determined to be better today than yesterday and even better tomorrow!

Thank you to all staff who made the event possible, particularly Mrs Fagan and Ms Potts for their meticulous organisation.

School Days...... Year 11s gathered for a day of celebration

and goodbyes on 26th June. They celebrated

their last day of school with speeches,

performances and a presentation of awards.

They were in high spirits, delighted that

GCSEs are over, looking forward to their

Prom, but sad that this was the last time the

whole year group would be together, as they

start to go their separate ways into college

courses, apprenticeships and, of course, into

Glenthorne's 6th Form. It was a nostalgic

occasion, looking back over the last five years

at school and reminiscing about shared experiences and memories and remembering the very

different faces who arrived at Glenthorne five years ago as timid and innocent Y7s.

After the presentations, there were hugs, tears and, of course, photo opportunities, and then off

home to get ready for the Prom at the Holiday Inn...which began with the most ostentatious of entrances with students arriving Porsches, stretched Hummers and also a VW camper van

covered in union jacks! Once the grand entrance was over, there was much admiration of the

stunning dresses and cool suits that others were wearing; Y11s have always dressed to impress!

Then it was on to the dance floor to dance the night away and entice the teachers on to the floor

to strut their stuff to a Craig David song!! There was great disappointment when the dancing

stopped at 11pm and then it was time for farewells to teachers and friends as the time at

Glenthorne drew to a close. Our Y11s have always been an outstanding year group and we look

forward to welcoming many of them back into the Sixth Form in September. Good luck Year 11;

we wish you all a happy and successful future!!

Farewell to the Class of 2005…. We wished our Y13s a sad farewell on 28th June.

The Class of 2005 gathered at 11am in PDH for a nostalgic presentation of memories; with creative

and entertaining speeches from representatives from each tutor group, the 6th Form tutors and Ms

Hurd, the famous “Glenny Awards” and a montage of the best photos from the last seven years, it

proved to be a morning of reminiscences, laughter and fun. Then , without further ado, it was off to

the 6th Form Common Room for champagne and mingling! However, the Class of 2005 couldn’t

stay for too long; there was much to be done, nails to be filed, hair to be styled, make-up to be ap-

plied before the main event, the Prom at Epsom Downs later that day!

Many of the Year 13s gathered outside the school at 7pm to travel in style to the racecourse in a

chartered London bus - no stretch limos or Ferraris for this year group! It was a beautiful summer’s

evening and the view over the Downs was stunning as they arrived at the racecourse, the girls look-

ing radiant in their stunning dresses and high-heels and the boys looking smart and sophisticated in

their DJs and suits. What had happened to those tiny, apprehensive elven year-olds that we first

met in their gingham dresses and plaits and in short trousers seven years ago?! There was just time

for a group photo before the meal was served. The food and wine were great and there was just

time to strike a pose for more photos before it was on to the dance floor for some serious

dancing!

It was a great evening and a perfect way to say goodbye to the Class of 2005. Our Year 13s have

always been a very popular year group among staff and have made a huge contribution to the school

over the last seven years. We will treasure fond memories of them for many years to come. We

wish them well as they head off to university and into careers and apprenticeships. Good Luck!

Charity Week has never been such fun…..

The school celebrated Charity Week 2012 in great style this year.

The Head Students achieved an amazing feat of organisation, running a whole series of events

throughout the week, including dodgeball, a bush-tucker trial, cake and refreshment stalls and the

traditional “Sponge-the-Teacher”.

The Mufti Day this year was based on the theme of the “Best of British” and there were some

interesting costumes worn… Charity Week this year coincided with Dance Week featuring a range

of workshops and activities and surprising everybody with a “Flash Mob” on Thursday lunchtime: a

spontaneous group dance to music in the school playground, much to the obvious delight of staff and

pupils alike.

The week culminated in the Glenthorne Games, an exciting and highly enjoyable celebration of the

London 2012 Olympic Games, and when pupils had a spare moment, they were enticed to a range of

fairground stalls organised by Sixth Formers, including face-painting, tin-can alley, Beat-the- Goalie

and many, many more.

It was all for a good cause as we were fundraising for our three chosen charities: the Motor Neurone

Disease Association, CLIC Sargent and Cystic Fibrosis.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards We have a number of pupils in the school working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award at the moment, mostly from Year 10 and 11 but there are a few Sixth Form students that have taken on the challenge as well. Year 10 pupils successfully completed both their practice and assessed expeditions earlier this term and they are now busily working on their skills, physical and volunteering sections to complete their awards. Year 11 pupils are in the process of submitting their final pieces of evidence and are at the point of completing their awards. There are some pupils who have completely finished their award and have received their certificate and badge. We would like to congratulate Lucinda Allen, Tom Cain, Connor Smither and Paul Paine in Year 11 and Luke Calderon in Year 12 for their fantastic achievement.

Orienteering Experience

On the 16th of June some pupils from the MAG&T core group attended an orienteering adventure around the perimeter of Richmond Park. Before we set out on our exploration of Richmond Park, there was the obstacle of actually meeting our fellow MAG&T pupils. As the road leading to Richmond Park was closed, parents had to complete their own orienteering task in order to navigate themselves to the starting point! We also had to help with this by doing lots of map reading to help our parents who were driving. Once the MAG&T group had arrived we were put into two teams and set off on our tour of Richmond Park. The first point that we got to after nearly 30 minutes of orienteering was a

telescope used to locate the whereabouts of a certain clue (especially for the MAG&T core group) after working out the puzzle of the poem in a circular shape. We set off to find other clues that would help our own team win. In order to complete these we had to work as a team which at times was a challenge when we had different opinions about the answers to specific questions and also the best route to the particular point.

A lot of problem-solving skills were therefore needed and also at some points some excellent communications skills by Iffat to track down a statue that had moved in 2 weeks near the White Lodge! Ethan was a fantastic navigator and he had to help the others in our team to read the compass and references at times. However, by the end of the task, we had all had a go at this! Some of the questions required us to hunt for specific landmarks and even counting the rings on trees to see how old they were! After almost two hours of developing our orienteering skills, we reunited with our opponents to settle the scores. It was a very close competition and although our team did have the most accurate compass points and references, Mr Berry’s team did have the most accurate answers and got back in the quickest time; however, we were all rewarded for our efforts with an ice cream, well apart from Ethan, who dropped his celebratory treat in the process of eating it. After a long 2 hours of competing we had to navigate ourselves back home for a well-deserved rest. By Ashleigh Blenkinsopp & Bethany Daunt (8N)

Sports Day: 1st June 2012 It was our annual Sports Day on Friday 1st June and it didn’t

rain! Over the past few years, we have become used to coping

with rain and even thunderstorms on Sports Day, but this year

the bad weather held off and we were able to enjoy a really

successful day!

As usual, we met at school and walked down to the Sutton

Arena. It had been a tough week for the school after an

OFSTED Inspection on the Wednesday and Thursday, so

everyone was looking forward to Sports Day as a great way to

finish off the half term and so it proved to be; there was an

excellent atmosphere and the pupils really got in to the spirit of

the occasion, making banners and posters of support for their tutor groups, cheering in encouragement

and support as their classmates approached the finishing line.

There was a great spirit of competition with handshakes and words

of congratulation amongst competitors at the end of the event. It’s

great to win, but it is the taking part that counts. There were some

really outstanding performances on the day and the winners and

record-breakers went on to represent the school at Borough Sports

on 14th June, when we came third out of the co-educational

schools.

Sports Day concluded with the excitement of the traditional staff race to wild cheers of approval and

encouragement from pupils and then everyone went home to enjoy a well earned half-term break.

Thank you to the PE department, particularly to Mrs Lewis, for all their work and organisation of Sports

Day and to all staff and pupils for helping to make it such a successful and enjoyable day.

Paralympic Event at Sutton Arena

On Wednesday 20th June, eleven Year 10 pupils and one student from Year 12

took on the role as ‘sports leaders’ and ‘photographers’ at a Paralympic event

being organised by the borough of Sutton. The event was held at Sutton

Arena and gave disabled members of the community the chance to

participate in a range of different sporting activities, ranging from football and

cricket, to zumba and judo.

All students demonstrated fantastic leadership and teamwork skills. The

organisers commented several times on the good work Glenthorne students

were doing, so much so that they welcomed us to join them again next year!

The positive attitude and commitment from all pupils contributed to making

the day a real success! Well done to all!

Sports London Youth Games

Well done to the Sutton Gymnastics team that came first in the London Youth Games, Congratula-

tions to Nancy Davenport in Year 8 who was part of the team and came third in the Floor and Vault

event.

Glenthorne Mixed Relays On Wednesday 27th June Glenthorne held the 13th Mixed Relays completion for Under 13 and 15 com-

petitors. Out of the four schools that competed in each of the age groups (Glenthorne, Cheam, Over-

ton and Stanley Park) Glenthorne came first in the under 13 competition and second in the under 15

competition. Special mentions must go to Ollie O’Dwyer and Folu Odimayo who competed in every

race.

Glenthorne Year 8 Girls’ Rounders On June 28th, the year 8 Borough rounders competition was held at Nonsuch High School. The

Glethorne team won their games against Greenshaw and St Philomena's securing them a place in the

semi final, unfortunately they lost their match to Cheam and did not make the final. This is still a great

achievement, well done to all the girls that took part!

Borough Sports Well done to everyone that competed at Borough Sports this year. The year 9 girls came 3rd overall which was a very commendable result against strong opposition. Special mentions must go to Ella

Shears who came first by a fair way in the 800m and the year 9 boys relay team (Charlie Hogan, Santi-

no Bucknell, Riccardo Ferrier and Shamail Ahmad) who came fourth overall in a strong heat but still

broke the Glenthorne School record of 50.29 seconds.

Citius, Altius, Fortius: the Glenthorne Games 2012! The school was transformed into an expansive sporting arena as it played host to ‘The Glenthorne Games 2012’ on 6th

July 2012. The ethos behind the Games was to provide pupils with the opportunity to try new activities and work as

part of a team. These ideals were evident throughout the day as pupils regularly demonstrated the Olympic values of

‘Respect’, ‘Excellence’ and ‘Friendship’.

The Games commenced with an amazing Opening Ceremony! A dazzling display from the Junior Performance Group,

accompanied by the ever impressive Jazz Band who played the theme tune from the ‘Rocky’ films, created a captivating

and enthralling atmosphere, building the anticipation of the day to come. A demonstration from Brazilian Ju-Jitsu

martial artists couldn’t fail to motivate and enthuse the onlooking pupils and staff. The pinnacle of the ceremony was

when the Games were officially declared open, after which pupils were dismissed to their morning activities.

In the lead-up to the Games, pupils in years seven to ten had been divided into ‘Houses’, named after famous

Olympians (Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington). This House system

enabled pupils to work with peers in their year group and also integrate with others across the wider school

community.

Pupils participated in at least two activities. Some activities such as Archery, Boxercise, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and Street

Dance took place at school under the expert guidance of professional instructors. Others were held at a variety of

local sports venues, such as Sutton Tennis Academy, Cheam Cricket Club and Chessington Equestrian Centre to

name just a few.

Year 12 students also had an important role to play on the day, organising and running an amazing set of ‘fairground

stalls’. The stalls raised a fantastic £200 which will go towards the school’s charities and next year’s Year 13 Prom.

During the afternoon activities, a keen photographer from the Sutton Guardian newspaper eagerly made her way into

school, taking some great pictures of the cycling and archery events. The pictures along with an article are to be

printed in the edition of the Sutton Guardian published the week beginning Monday 16th July.

As the day drew to a close, everyone reflected on what had truly been a successful and super day of sport! Results

from all the competition events were added together and the winning Houses in each year group were:

Year 7 – Redgrave Year 8 – Redgrave Year 9 – Holmes Year 10 – Holmes

To determine the overall winning House, the points across each year group (for each House) were added together.

The Glenthorne Games 2012 Champions are – Holmes House.

Congratulations to all pupils who took part. The main aim of the day was for everyone to have fun and enjoy them-

selves. There was a real buzz surrounding the event and an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm, which made

the Glenthorne Games 2012 a huge success! Well done to all.
