Time to Play!Everyone needs physical activity to stay t. Try riding your bike to school or practice, walking to the park, taking the stairs, or

strapping on your skates. Set a goal to do these activities for 30 minutes each day.

Soda-Free Summer!Challenge yourself to not drink any soda

during the summertime. Aim to drink at least 5 glasses of water every day to keep your body hydrated, especially when it’s hot

outside. Drink water before, during, and after practice.

Turn Off the TV & Computer!Challenge yourself to not watch TV or play on the

computer for more than 30 minutes each day. You’ll have more time to play outside and use your energy

in a positive way.

Don’t Forget to Brush! The best way to keep a nice smile and clean teeth is to brush twice a day with a uoride toothpaste. Remember, after brushing your

teeth at bedtime, do not drink or eat anything except water.

5 a Day!It’s important for you to get at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. All forms count – fresh, frozen, dried, canned, and 100% juice.

Use the magnet to chart how many you eat each week!

Protect Yourself!Always remember to fasten your seatbelt, apply sunscreen, wear your helmet, and wash your hands. You will stay safe

and healthy if you do these easy things.

See how many fruits and vegetables you can eat in one day, and track your progress on the magnet. Choose from all forms - fresh, frozen,

canned, dried, and 100% juice all count.

Strike Out Violence Speaker’s EventJoin Youth Advocate Michael Pritchard at one of our speaker’s events that address issues such as bullying at a young age or gang prevention for pre-teens. It will be an informative, fun day for kids and parents. Everyone will receive a special gift for attending. Ask your commissioner about an event near you!

Michael Pritchard reminds us all, “Violence doesn’t have a zip code.” Make sure to hear more from Mike through our Junior Giants Strike Out Violence Program. Here are some of his words of wisdom about respecting others:

• Stand up against bullying; don’t volunteer to be a victim.• Pain shared is pain divided.• The bad you do will be sad for you; the good you do will come

back to you.• You don’t have to blow somebody else’s candle out to make sure

yours shines brighter.

Parents and kids, visit our website for more Violence Prevention information and a video presentation of Michael Pritchard.

Just go to and click on the Violence Prevention page.

Excerpt from GANGS: Hot or NOT!!!!By Jacqueline BenoyAtwater Junior Giants

People see gangs as very bad, other have a different point of view. The people that support gangs see gangs as cool, exciting, and a way of life.

The people against gangs see them as a bad influence, low lives, dangerous, uncaring, and a complete waste of time. Staying out of a gang is easy if you really care about yourself.

THE THREE THEMES FOR POSITIVE COACHING

• Honoring the game – Respect for ROOTS: Rules - Refuse to bend the rules to win Opponents - A worthy opponent brings out our best Officials - Respect them even when we disagree Teammates - Never do anything that embarrasses our team Self - Uphold your own standards regardless of what others do• Redefining “Winner” – A Positive Coach helps players redefine what it means to be a “winner” by emphasizing effort, learning, and bouncing back from mistakes.• Filling the Emotional Tank – A Positive Coach fills players’ Emotional Tanks, recognizing that athletes need to have full tanks to have fun, learn, and play their best.

JUNIOR GIANTS PARENT PLEDGE

1. I pledge to get my child to practice and games on time.

2. I pledge to use positive encouragement to fill my child’s Emotional Tank.

3. I pledge to reinforce the ELM Tree of Mastery with my child (E for Effort, L for Learning, and M for bouncing back from Mistakes).

4. I pledge to “Honor the Game.”

5. I pledge to refrain from yelling out instructions to my child.

6. I pledge to refrain from making negative comments about my child’s coach in my child’s presence.

Dear Parents,

The Giants Community Fund is thrilled to have you and your family participating in Junior Giants

baseball. More than just fundamentals on the field, it is a program that includes Character Building,

Health, Education, and Violence Prevention, with the goal to teach kids to live healthy and

productive lives. We ask for your support in these key areas by encouraging your child to participate

in all the programs Junior Giants offers.

The Junior Giants Four Bases of Character Development are Confidence, Teamwork, Integrity, and

Leadership. These valuable life lessons help to enrich the overall experience for Junior Giants players.

Junior Giants is a recreational program with the emphasis placed on working together and learning

from each other, not wins and losses. We ask for your help in maintaining a non-competitive

atmosphere, without keeping score during the games.

Simply said, the Community Fund is a unique organization. We are a public charity with a tie to the

great game of baseball – a sport that convenes people of all ages and from all walks of life. We are

honored to play an active role in our community, providing programs for youth since 1991.

We are now able to serve more than 15,000 children annually through the Junior Giants program. In

addition, we work year-round to ensure that we reach underserved populations with important

initiatives in health, education, and violence prevention.

This is where we ask for your help, as we consider you a member of our team and, indeed, someone

who plays a critical role in our mission of service to the community. Read with your child, offer them

healthy snacks and meals, and teach them the importance of caring for their neighbors and community

while playing baseball in a non-competitive setting.

Thank you for your time and effort in making Junior Giants successful in all areas!
