General Enhancements OpenGL

1) This will open the Appearance

Settings dialog containing OpenGL and other display parameters.

2) This will duplicate the Appearance Setting so the settings can be changed.

3) Once the preferences have been duplicated they can be renamed.

4) This will allow you to change the background.

5) This will turn on and off the display of the axis marker.

Help Menu

2 2 Network License Option (NLO)

1) Search for help items. 2) Pick on an item for help (same as the

question mark icon in the tool bar). 3) Open the Getting Started PDF document. 4) Open the What’s New in GibbsCAM 2006

PDF document. 5) About GibbsCAM has changed; you can see

the tabs across the top.

NLO will now support multi-instancing and the NLO server will now run on the MS Server 2003 operating system.

Document Dialog

1) The MDD choices have changed. The 16 generic lathe MDDs have been consolidated down to 4 by giving the user control over the lathe shank size.

2) The Mill Tool Holder Class (backside) can be selected from the document dialog.

Note that the correct set of tools will be loaded, based on the Mill Tool Holder Class selected, and/or the Lathe Shank Size selected.

Document Dialog (continued)

The GUI for the 4-axis set up has changed. The generic setup will now support C axis rotation.

The 5-Axis GUI has also changed. This will only show a correct configuration. You can also set the axis limits here so you don’t have to edit the MDD.

CAD Import New CAD File Import Capability includes:

• ACIS R16 files. • CATIA R13, R14, R15, and R16 files. • Solid Edge V18 and Solid Edge assembly files. • Text and binary DXF formatted files. • SolidWorks 2006 and parts containing only "imported bodies". • AutoCAD 2006 using the new AutoDesk RealDWG capability. • Drag and Drop for all imported files (not only for VNC files).

Circles can now be sorted just like points.

1) From the modify menu select the sort command. Pick the desired sort you want.

The RMM now has the ability to quickly align the face of a solid to the current CS.

1) Turn on face selection. 2) Select face of the solid. 3) RMM align face to CS.

Setting the Origin

Solids

The origin can be placed using two edges or in the center of a circle using the circles edges.

1) Open the CS pallet and create a new CS. 2) Select a face. 3) Align the CS to the face using the align command. 4) Select two edges. 5) Use the origin button to place the origin at the

intersection of these two edges. 6) This also is accomplished by selecting the edge of a

circle. This will put the origin in the center of the circle.

STL Import

GibbsCAM 2006 has the ability to import STL models as “Faceted Bodies”. They can be used in display and as a fixture or stock body in Cut Part Rendering. They are not used for creating toolpath (machining).

Faceted model. You can see this model looks different. It is more transparent. You can apply solid properties (part, stock, or fixture).

Part model.

You can also create a faceted body or save an STL file from flash CPR or Machine Sim for in-process stock.

Picking faces

With the profiler you now have a choice to select all the faces inside a selected boundary.

Also with face selection turned on you can shift window drag. All the faces that have some part of the face inside the window drag rectangle will be selected.

RMM mouse Start and End markers

Use RMM to move the start and end markers to the desired location on the geometry without having to drag the markers. This works for both milling and turning.

1) Typical start of tool path. 2) RMM on the geometry that you want to be the

end marker. The marker moves to the selected geometry.

Tabs that are in Bold contain settings that will affect the tool path based on the current selection.

Hole Feature Drill

What is a hole feature? A hole feature is a point with attributes. The attributes contain information about each hole. The drill process now has two options for defining the hole dimensions; “from hole” and “from tool”. The hole depth and R value can be obtained directly from the hole feature.

Surface Flow

Profiler can now be used to drill holes.

Surface Flow is now gouge checked. It will check against selected and non-selected faces.

Operations Manager

Operations Manager is an easy way to look at your operations. If you have a large program you can view selected ops you can sort. This works well when used with the Find Ops Plug-In.

Note: The Op Manager is for viewing. It is not an editor. To edit an op; right mouse click on an operation record.

Operations Manager continued

The operations manager has some RMM selections for viewing the spreadsheet.

1) Show selected Ops; this will show only the operations that are selected.

2) Show All Ops; this will show every operation in the list.

3) Multi-level Sort; this will allow you sort by a specific topic. (See 3a)

4) Apply Sort Order; based on the sort choices that you made, this will reorder the operations accordingly. This may produce a warning. (See 4a)

5) Calculate TP Len/Time. 6) Print; Prints the spreadsheet.

Plug-Ins Sharp Corners

Fillet tool path takes any pocketing or contouring operation and puts radiuses on the sharp corners of the tool path.

Helix Bore

Helix Bore creates a helical tool path for round shapes. It also will automatically take one complete finish pass at the bottom of the hole.

1) Helix Bore can work with points or circles.

2) Select a tool. 3) Launch the Plug-In. 4) Pick your points or circles. 5) Do It.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are using circles the Plug-In knows the size you are going to cut. If you are using points you need to specify the bore diameter.

Offset Contour

Offset Contour creates multiple side passes by stepping the tool path over.

1) Select any open or closed contour.

2) Select the Offset Contour menu, fill in the fields.

3) Do It will create multiple operations.

4) Then redo all ops. 5) Finished tool path.

Z Ramp Contour

Z Ramp Contour takes any closed contour and creates a continuous spiraling tool path in Z.

High Speed Machining (HSM). This Plug-In will extend the tool path and put loops on the lace cut tool paths necessary for high speed machining.

Pinch Turning

Pinch Turning - Creates two interlaced tool paths so two tools can cut on an OD at the same time. One tool needs to be in the upper turret and one tool needs to be in the lower turret.

1) Create two tools; one in the upper turret and one in the lower turret.

2) Create a roughing process. 3) Select the tool that will be in the

lower turret. 4) Launch the Plug-In. 5) Fill in the Lag Between Turrets

value. 6) Do It; and the tool path is created.

Get Draft Angle

Get Draft Angle; pick any planar face on a solid. The Plug-In will return the angle of that face relative to the current CS.

Model Associativity

Model Associativity allows you to associate tool path with a changed solid model.

1) Set to Selected Body; here you would select the changed solid.

2) Replace First Solid With Second; here you would pick the first solid then the second.

3) Replace Solid With Heir; this is used if you modify the current solid in GibbsCAM.

Show Face Normals

1) Show Face Normals; this graphically shows an array of normal vectors on a selected face.

2) Select Plug-Ins, Solids, Show Face Normals.

3) You can select color, length, and density of the normal lines.

4) Select a face of a solid. 5) You will see the face normal.

Find Ops

Find Ops Plug-In is a search for tool or operation types. This Plug-In will work very well with the Op Manager.

1) Choose the search parameters. In this case look for tool 5.

Import VNC

1) Tools used or all tools. 2) This will not create

duplicate tools. 3) Imports the solids in the

files you selected. 4) You have some choices

of what to import. 5) Import Workgroups

used, CS’s used, or all. 6) Use TMS Options will

set up all the correct options for TMS CS’s.

Import VNC is designed to import the operation from a VNC file into an existing file. This works well for TMS or advanced milling parts.

Mirror Ops

Mirror Ops; this will mirror any operation and maintain climb or conventional G41/G42.

1) Select one or more Operations. 2) Select the Mirror Ops menu. 3) Fill in the appropriate fields. 4) Finished tool path.

Rotary Rough

Rotary Rough is for solids in Mill Turn or Advanced Mill. It will create three different types of tool path along any of the principal axes.

1) Linear – cuts along the axis of rotation. 2) Rotary – cuts around the solid, keeping the

tool normal to the surface. 3) Helical – cuts a continuous path around the

axis of rotation.

Extend tool path at start

New selection on the menu: Start Side Extension. This will extend the tool path from the start by the specified amount in the stroke direction.

Lathe form tools

Form tools for lathe can now be used for roughing.

The same rules apply for creating form tools. The touch off point is built at the XY origin.

MTM Chuck Face Tool Sub Positions

On the document dialog there is now a field for setting the chuck face thickness. The Grip Z value in the Sub Spindle utility ops can now be specified relative to the Chuck Face that is defined.

Tool sub position can now be input in the tool dialog. This is used for Flash Tooling or other tools with multiple cutting positions.

Note: Flash CPR now supports MTM.
