Sticky Situations:

Spilled Beans

Joy feels terrible about what happened at lunch

today. She and her friends were sitting around after they had

eaten when the subject of boys came up. Somehow, the conversa-

tion turned to Joy's best friend, Darcy. One of the girls began

speculating about which boy Darcy liked in their math class.

Well, she came up with the wrong name. Rather than leave it at

that, Joy blurted out the name of the boy Darcy does like. One

thing lead to another, and by the end of the day, the school was

buzzing with the latest news.

Darcy was so mad at joy that she didn't even wait to walk

home with her after school. Joy knows that she should have kept

her big mouth shut, but it's too late. If only Darcy would give her

a chance to at least apologize. The phone rings, and it's Darcy.

Before Joy can get in a word, Darcy blasts her. She really lets her

have it. joy is completely taken aback. She knows she was wrong

to say anything, but does she deserve a tirade like this? Darcy

finally quiets down and is waiting for a response. What do you

think Joy should say to her?

Should she. . .

A. Admit quietly that she was wrong and ask Darcy to for-

give her?

B. Let Darcy have it back-full blast!?

C. Tell Darcy it really was another girl at the table who

spilled the beans?

D. Get so mad at Darcy for blasting her that she vows never

to speak to her again?

E. Hang up-and wait for Darcy to calm down?

~ Check out Proverbs 15:1 to find out how Joy should re-

spond.

The “ideal” answer for this sticky situation will be given in next

week’s newsletter.

Last week’s “Sticky Situation”

Show a Little Respect

The students at Ginny's school are hopping mad. The other day the prin-

cipal announced that there would be no more class trips this year. It seems

that on the last school trip, a half dozen students decided to leave their group

and go their own way instead. They got lost, and the teachers and chaper-

ones spent several frantic hours searching for them. Those students were

punished individually, but the principal canceled all the other trips for this

year.

As editor of the school newspaper, Ginny is receiving letter after letter

from angry students about the new policy. Some of the letters offer helpful

ideas. Others are downright nasty and disrespectful. Ginny is pressured by

her newspaper staff and her friends to run some of the letters-the nastier, the

better. Ginny doesn't agree with the principal's decision, and she is disap-

pointed. One of her classes was supposed to go to the new water park this

spring as part of its science project, but now the class can't go. Ginny has to

admit many of the nastier letters are pretty funny, but she wonders if it is

right to print them. What do you think Ginny should do?

Should she. . .

A. Print the nastiest letter she can find to let the principal know how un-

popular he has become?

B. Print one or two of the milder letters-the principal will get the point?

C. Write a scathing editorial about how mean the principal is and call for

his resignation?

D. Express her, and her classmates', opposition in a thoughtful and re-

spectful editorial that clearly presents their views?

E. Put all the letters together and send them to the principal anony-

mously?

For help in knowing how Ginny should respond, look up 1 Peter 2:13.

And the “ideal” answer is: D DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. What's the best way to present your views when they are opposite of a

teacher's, parent's, or other authority's?

2. Read 1 Peter 2:13. Why do you think Christians should obey people in

authority over them?

3. How is answer D in keeping with Peter's instruction to cooperate with

authorities?

Whenever possible, Christians are to live according to the laws of those

in authority over them. Those who disagree should do so respectfully, and

not in anger. This is to be done, as Peter says, "for the Lord's sake," so that

the Good News and God's people will be respected.
