Looking for a way to help little ones manage anxiety about thunderstorms? Read this prayer-poem together and remind children of God’s protection whenever we’re afraid.
I run outside to laugh and play. Keep me safe, dear Lord, I pray. I look about, Dark clouds roll near. The sky declares, “A storm is here!” Then thunder rumbles, cracks and booms! I hurry home to watch the show of lightning flashing all around and raindrops tumbling to the ground. A rainbow, Lord, please send my way. Then I will run outside and play. —Mary Ann Sundby
“Summer Storm”
We should also always remember that
the church does not belong to the mem-
bers. The church is God's church. We are
blessed to have a church family. Those
who think that they own the church and
can impose their will as a dictator are
mistaken. Too often these individuals re-
member their membership vows only if
they like the current pastor.
Through private and public prayer, wor-
ship, the sacraments, study, Christian
action, systematic giving, and holy disci-
pline, members grow in understanding
of God and an understanding of them-
selves. Paragraph 217 of the Book of
Discipline states that a member is bound
in sacred covenant to shoulder the bur-
dens, share the risks, and celebrate the
joys of fellow members.
May we remember our blessings and our
responsibilities to uphold the church by
our prayers, our presence, our gifts and
our talents.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Robert
Church member-
ship is both simple
and difficult. It is
simple because all
we need to do is ask
to join and affirm our beliefs as Unit-
ed Methodists. There are no tests or
initiations. There is no monetary
membership fee to join. There is no
requirement that members attend
each and every Sunday. But member-
ship is difficult because members are
asked to enter into the life of the con-
gregation, fully cognizant of what
membership entails: a freedom and
responsibility to grow spiritually, and
a responsibility to give as you are
able, of your time, talents and treas-
ures to the life of this congregation.
By joining together we are able to do
more than we can as individuals. To-
gether, we have an amazing potential
for transformation. We join with oth-
ers for company, for strength, for co-
operation, for comfort. Alone, our vi-
sion is too narrow. Together we can
envision and do great things. Together
we can accomplish great things. The
connectional system of the church al-
lows United Methodists to reach
across the world and help others in
need.
