ACTIVITY

The children will pair up and one child in each pair will be given a piece of paper and a pencil. The other child in the pair will be the person giving the drawing instructions. The pairs will sit back to back, and the partner giving the drawing instructions will face the front of the area where the picture will be displayed. Show the slide of the picture made of the different shapes. The child giving the instructions will try to de-scribe in detail the picture being shown, as the other child tries to draw it without peeking. After all of the directions are given, the pair will see if their picture looks anything like the picture on the screen!

Was it difficult to follow your partner’s instructions word for word? How many partners had a picture that was really close to the one on the screen? Today we’re going to learn about some instructions God gave to Moses. God wanted to live with Moses and the Israelites while they were wandering in the desert for 40 years. God instructed Moses on how to build this dwelling place called the tabernacle!

We’re going to use the entire front of the room to depict the tabernacle. If you’re unclear about the placement of different objects, view the YouTube video for reference. Show the kids this video after you’ve walked through the visualization in the room. We also suggest that you label each item so it will be easier for the kids to remember the layout of the tabernacle. (Feel free to substitute other objects that will depict these items if they are more readily available.)

In this order, you’ll need:• a ladder for Mt. Sinai• a card table with some pieces of wood on it like a campfire to

depict The Altar of Sacrifice• basin of water and a hand towel off to the right as the Bronze Basin• two people holding up a shower curtain• large lit candle to the left as the Lampstand• across from the Lampstand (candle) should be a small table with a

loaf of bread on which is the Bread of the Presence;• large cardboard box with incense and matches there for the Altar of

Incense• two people holding up a shower curtain for the dividing veil• a trunk to represent the Ark of the Covenant.

Begin by sitting on top of a ladder to symbolize Moses being up Mt. Si-nai. Put a sign on the ladder that identifies it as Mt. Sinai. Moses was the

leader of the Israelites, God’s chosen people. God rescued the Israelites and helped them escape from Egypt. The children of God were now wandering in the desert. God talked to Moses for 40 days on top of Mount Sinai, and told him that He wanted to dwell among the Israelites—He wanted to live with them. God gave very specific direc-tions to Moses on how to build this place called the Tabernacle, where God would be! This became the central place for the Israelites to wor-ship God! It was the desire of God to be with the people.

The Israelites were supposed to all pitch in and help, bringing an offer-ing of supplies that would be used in the building of the Tabernacle. Some of the supplies were gold, silver, bronze, cloth materials, acacia wood, and olive oil. The Israelites were so generous when giving their gifts that Moses had to tell the people to stop bringing supplies! God gave special skills to certain Israelites so that they could build the fur-nishings that went inside the Tabernacle. The directions that God gave to Moses were very specific, and Moses was told to make everything exactly like the pattern God showed to Moses. That is so cool! While on Mount Sinai, God somehow showed Moses exactly what the Tabernacle and His dwelling place was supposed to look like! (Come down off the ladder and start at one end of the room that represents the entrance to the Tabernacle.)

Here we are at the outer tent of The Tabernacle. (Take a step forward and make a motion as if pulling back a curtain.) This was called the courtyard. I’m going to walk you through how the Tabernacle was set up. There were over 600,000 Israelite families living around the Tabernacle in the desert. Imagine 600,000 tents all around this area. People entered and exited the courtyard from one end. There was only one way into the Tabernacle … only one way to where God dwelled. The first furnishing that the Israelites came to inside the courtyard was The Altar of Burnt Offering. (Move to the card table with a pile of wood on it, sitting by itself.) This altar was made of the wood and bronze that the people donated. By God’s instructions, animals were sacrificed, or burned, here to pay for the Israelites’ sins.

As we move on through the outer court, we come to the Bronze Basin. (Move to the basin of water and hand towel in front of you. Wash your hands and dry them as you talk.) The Israelite priests washed their hands and feet at the Bronze Basin before they entered the Tabernacle.

We have now passed the place of sacrifice (point to the altar) and the place of cleansing (point to the basin), and now we are entering the Holy Place. (This is where 2 people will be holding one set of shower curtains. Go through them. To the left will be a large lit candle.) To the left was the Lampstand. The real Lampstand had seven candles, and was the only source of light in the Tabernacle.

The Lampstand was on the left side when you walked into the Holy Place, and on the right was the table with the Bread of the Presence. (On the right, set a loaf of bread on a small table.) This bread was simi-lar to our communion bread and was on the table at all times.

Moving on within the Holy Place, we come to The Altar of Incense. (This can be a large cardboard box. Light some incense and then blow

Page 4: Gifts for the Tabernacle - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/8_Gifts_for_the_Tabernacle.pdfIsraelites—He wanted to live with them. God gave very specific

it out to watch the smoke.) We saw the glow of the Lampstand, we tasted the bread, and now we smell the incense. Incense is a nice smelling substance that creates a fragrant smoke that floats upward. This smoke symbolized the Israelites’ prayers going up to heaven.

(Move the shower curtain so it represents another curtain in the taber-nacle.) Beyond this divider is the Holy of Holies. This curtain was huge and about 3 inches thick. It was a cloth wall. This is where the Ark of the Covenant stayed. (Place a trunk behind the shower curtain, so that when you walk through the curtain you are separated from everything else in the Tabernacle.) The Ark of the Covenant held the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments written on them. Two golden cherubim (heavenly creatures) sat on top facing each other. In between these two golden angelic beings is where God dwelled. The only person allowed to enter the Holy of Holies was the high priest, and he could only enter one time per year.

We have walked through the Israelites “church.” This was their place of worship during their time spent in the desert. God gave extremely specific instructions to Moses for building the Tabernacle. It was a very holy place, because it was the place where God lived among the Israelites.

Now, view the YouTube clip as a group. We suggest you turn the volume down very low or possibly off.

If you have time, the following video is 8:10 minutes, but goes through each item in the Tabernacle. (If not, it would be excellent background and we strongly recommend that the leader view this.) Each item is de-scribed to the smallest detail and it shows how God gave very specific instructions about everything. This video has great value, because the children won’t have to construct the details in their mind, but will have a very realistic image to connect with. We’ve suggested that families watch this together at home. This YouTube video is called “The Taber-nacle, Part 1” submitted by crtism.

GAME

It’s important for the children to understand the Tabernacle and what each thing meant. Through that understanding, they will be able to see why Jesus came and how God deals with His people in a different way now, because of Jesus’ death. God had a plan all along that led to Jesus coming; the Tabernacle and the priests were part of that.

The children will participate in a relay race that reviews the steps the high priest had to take before entering the Holy of Holies. Divide the children into equal teams and line them up at one end of the lesson area. There will be five stations in front of each team, spread out

Page 5: Gifts for the Tabernacle - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/8_Gifts_for_the_Tabernacle.pdfIsraelites—He wanted to live with them. God gave very specific

whatever running length your space allows. At the signal, the first player from each team will run to their first station and do as described below. Once they have completed this task, they will run to their next station and do what is described for that. After they’ve completed all five sta-tions, they will return to their team to give the next player a high-five so that player can run the stations.

The priest did certain things before going into the Holy of Holies. He offered an animal sacrifice to pay for the sins of the people. Then, he washed his hands and feet in the basin. Next he lit the 7 candles of the lampstand, the only light in the Tabernacle. He went to the table to eat from the Bread of the Presence, and then he burned the incense so the sweet smell would fill the place.

Station One set-up: a box with some stuffed animals next to it.Station One action: put one stuffed animal in the box and say, “An ani-mal was sacrificed on the altar.”

Station Two set-up: a basin/bucket of water and a hand towelStation Two action: wash your hands, dry them and say, “The high priest cleansed himself in the basin.”

Station Three set-up: flashlightStation Three action: turn the flashlight on and off, and say, “The lamp-stand was the only light.”

Station Four set-up: little crackersStation Four action: eat a cracker, show your empty mouth to the leader, and say, “The priest ate the Bread of the Presence.”

Station Five set-up: bottle of air freshenerStation Five action: squirt one spray of air freshener and say, “The incense was a sweet smell to God.”

GAME

In building the Tabernacle, the people needed to work together. Much of the work they were doing was very tedious. Some of the carving and gold work was done by incredibly skillful artists. God had given very specific instructions and meant for them to be followed down to the smallest detail. In this game, you and a partner will be working together on something that is very tedious and will take a great deal of concentration.

Choose 8 kids to participate at a time (or whatever number you’d like) and group them in pairs. Each pair will have a jumbo craft stick and 4 hex nuts. One person in each pair will hold one end of the craft stick in their mouth. This player is not allowed to touch anything—the stick or the hex nuts—just hold the stick steady in their mouth. Their partner will use one hand (only one hand) to stack their 4 hex nuts at the other end of the craft stick. The first pair to get their hex nuts stacked and bal-anced for 5 seconds will get one of the following questions to answer. Feel free to award any number of points … they’re free!

MESSAGE: PART 1

(show slide #2) A Giving Heart

Read Exodus 25:2 “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from each man whose heart prompts him to give.”

God left it up to each Israelite to decide how much he/she wanted to donate to the Tabernacle. He said to give as much as their heart told them to give. I’m going to ask you some yes or no questions. They are very personal questions and you don’t need to raise your hands. What I do want you to do is: put your hands flat on your legs. With everyone looking up at me, if your answer is “yes” to the question, turn your right hand up. If your answer is “no” to the question, turn your left hand up. No one will be looking around to see which hands are turned up.

SUPPLIES• packing peanuts• big tub• 3 large serving bowls

This iKnow kidzmatter.com7

• Do you think that you are a giving person?• Do you enjoy buying something for someone else with your

own money?• Is it easy for you to give a possession you really like to another

person?• If you have candy, do you usually share it with a brother or

sister without being asked?• Do you enjoy spending your money on others?• Have you ever given someone a gift for no reason?

These acts of giving are sometimes very hard to do.

(show slide #3) Generosity Galore!

God commands us to be generous. 2 Corinthians 8:7 says to “excel in this grace of giving.” God tells us to be great at giving! Look up and read together Exodus 36:5-6, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done. Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” WOW! The Israelites gave until someone simply had to say, “STOP! We have too much!” That is generosity galore!

What projects have you been involved in where you have seen gener-osity galore? (food drives at school, Christmas toy drive, raising money for a disaster)

• How do you feel when you are a part of such a generous action?

• Do you add to the giving, or do you often let your classmates, or the other people involved do most of the giving?

OBJECT LESSON

Place the packing peanuts in a large tub. Choose 2 kids for each of your 3 large serving bowls. The bowls need to be identical to be fair. For each pair there will be a “Filler” and a “Referee.” At the signal, all 3 fillers will get a handful of packing peanuts from the tub and place them in the bowl. As soon as they dump the peanuts in the bowl, they’ll go for another handful. They will continue to fill their mixing bowl with packing peanuts. The referee for each bowl will have to determine when to stop before the bowl starts spilling over. Each time a handful of peanuts is delivered to the bowl, the referee will say, “We need more.” The referee will have to decide when a full handful of peanuts will no longer fit in the bowl without spilling out. When the referee says, “It’s enough!” then the filler will stop bringing peanuts. If packing peanuts fall out of the bowl, then that pair is out of the game. The team with the most packing pea-nuts in their bowl without having any fall out is the winner.

Note: To include all the kids, you could use this as a relay, or have the kids from the audience determine when the filler should stop.

When Moses shared what God wanted the Israelites to build, they brought gifts from their homes that could be used to build the Tabernacle. They were so excited about the Tabernacle that they gave and gave and gave and gave … until someone had to say, “STOP! It’s enough!”

MESSAGE: PART 2

(show slide #4) Specific Instructions!

God told Moses to “make this Tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.” That is very specific, isn’t it? That means to the exact size, to the exact look, and to the exact placement! As we go through our lives, we also have very specific instructions. The Israelites had to listen to Moses to get God’s instructions, but we all have a book of instructions straight from God that we are told to fol-low. What am I talking about?

Proverbs 8:33 says, “Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ig-nore it.” What are you when you listen to God’s instructions? (Wise) Proverbs 16:20 says, “Whoever listens to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.” What happens when you listen to God’s instructions? (Prosper and are blessed)

Do you believe that you will be wise, you will prosper, and you will be blessed when you follow God’s instructions? Even when your friends are doing something that is against God’s instructions, do you believe that you will be blessed for walking away from that sinful situation? The blessing may not come from your friends, but God will bless you for following His instructions because He said so in His Word!

When we turn away from God’s specific instructions, that’s when we get into trouble. That’s when we sin, because that’s disobedience against God.

(show slide #5) No More Curtain!

Can you imagine our mighty God dwelling between the two cheru-bim on the Ark of the Covenant? Only once a year could one priest go into the Holy of Holies and talk with God on behalf of the people. No one else was allowed in there … at any time! The priest was the go-between who represented the people before God. He took messages from God to the people, and he asked for God’s direction and for His forgiveness on behalf of the people. That’s the only way people could approach God, because the Deliverer, the Redeemer, the Sacrifice, the Savior—Jesus—had not come yet.

Page 9: Gifts for the Tabernacle - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/8_Gifts_for_the_Tabernacle.pdfIsraelites—He wanted to live with them. God gave very specific

SUPPLIES• helium balloons• permanent markers• Bibles

This iKnow kidzmatter.com9

Read Mark 15:37-38. When Jesus, the Son of God, who was the ultimate sacrifice, died, the huge veil that divided the courtyard of the Taber-nacle from the Holy of Holies, ripped from top to bottom. This veil, or gigantic curtain, was 7 cm thick. Show how thick that is with your fingers—almost 3 inches. That seems impossible to rip!

Give out some pieces of cotton fabric to a few kids to demonstrate how you can rip through them. Then, challenge them to rip through some-thing a lot thicker, like a phone book. That gives you a little bit of an idea of how massive this curtain was!

This is so incredibly important, kids, so listen closely. When Jesus be-came the ultimate sacrifice, when we believe on Him, we have personal access to God. The relationship is brand new with God. After Jesus there was no more need for the Altar of Burnt Offering; no animals needed to be sacrificed any longer. When that curtain ripped from top to bottom, it was a way of telling us that God was available to every-one now … because of Jesus. We no longer have to have a priest who will go to God and ask for our forgiveness. Jesus is our high priest who will go to God for us. It was like the curtain was ripped and God said, “If you believe in Jesus, come on in!”

To have the awesome privilege of being with God every day, through every situation, each person has to make the decision to admit that they have disobeyed God. And then, when you believe that Jesus was the perfect Son of God and died for every sinner, including you, you can talk to God directly and ask for His forgiveness. Your disobedience (sin) has been punished through Jesus’ death. He made the way for you to come into the Holy of Holies … into God’s presence!

PRAYER

Every morning and every evening, the high priest burned fragrant incense on the Altar of Incense. The incense symbolized the prayers of the Israelites. Today we’re going to send our prayers up before God. We do not need a high priest to offer our prayers up to God. Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, and the removal of our sin, we can boldly and respectfully go to the Lord in prayer! The Bible tells us that Jesus lives to take our prayers to His Father.

Give each child a permanent marker, preferably one with a slightly worn tip. Don’t be afraid to write on an inflated balloon with one of these; as long as you don’t stab the balloon violently, it will survive just fine. Each child will write his/her prayer on a helium balloon. (We encourage you to provide a balloon for each child, but if you don’t have enough bal-loons for each child, they can share.) When the prayers are written, go outside and release the balloons. Give thanks as you “offer your prayers up to God!”

#1 What ya doin?

#2 I just got this totally awesome game that I ordered. Do you want to play it with me?

#1 I’d love to! Thanks!

#2 Okay. Just wait a minute. I gotta put it together here. (struggles with a piece)

#1 What are you trying to do?

#2 I saw this commercial on TV and I think that this piece goes over here. (struggles with a different piece)

#1 Are you sure? I would think that the pieces would go together without you forcing them to.

#2 Hey listen! This is MY new game, not yours!

#1 I think that I’ve seen this game at my cousin’s, and it didn’t look a thing like that!

#2 (getting very irritated) Maybe you should just go visit your cousin now and I’ll call you when I’m done here!

#1 Well look over here. The directions are still in the box.

#2 Who needs directions? This thing can’t be that difficult to put together!

#1 (quietly) Well, you’re sure making it look difficult.

#2 Hey! I heard that.

#1 Listen, the creators of this game gave you instructions to make it easier and less stressful for you while you put it together.

#2 I AM IN THE FIFTH GRADE! I think I can figure it out!

#1 Okay, I’ll just wait over here and enjoy the view until you’re done.

#2 (Mumbles and grumbles while trying to put the game together, but he just can’t figure it out.)

#1 Ya know, this reminds me of the Bible.

#2 The Bible! How on earth does my putting this game together remind you of the Bible?

#1 Well, you were given instructions on how to put this game together and you are refusing to read them, and choosing to ignore them!

#2 (grunts)

#1 It’s making your life more stressful and miserable!!

#2 I’m doing just fine, thank you, but you still haven’t told me why this situation is like the Bible?

#1 God has given us an entire book of instructions that will help us in life, and we can choose to listen to them and follow them, or just like you, we can ignore them. If we follow God’s instructions in the Bible, our lives will be less stressful!

#2 I’m starting to see what you’re saying.

#1 God wants what is best for us, so we can trust that following His instructions is what is best for us! (picks up directions and holds them out to #2) Are you ready for these yet? The sun is gonna go down before you finish putting that thing together.

#2 Yeah! Hand ‘em over. You’re right. Following these directions will make my life much easier!

#1 And following God’s instructions will lead to blessings in your life too! The Bible actually says that our joy is complete when we follow God’s instructions!

#2 That makes a lot of sense. Okay, back to the game. Let’s play! You know I’m gonna beat you … oh yeah!

#1 Out of my way, buddy! Watch and learn. (start playing)

CRAFT

Review the elements of the Tabernacle, along with their descriptions.• Outer tent surrounding the courtyard.• Altar of Burnt Offering – where animal sacrifices were made• Bronze Basin – where the priests washed their hands and feet

before entering the Holy Place (the Tabernacle)• The Holy Place – where only priests were allowed to enter• Lampstand on the left – There were 7 lights on this lampstand

and it was the only source of light in the Tabernacle.• Bread of Presence on a Table on the right – bread was there,

much like our communion bread• Altar of Incense• Dividing curtain into the Holy of Holies, where only one priest

was allowed to enter one time a year.• Ark of the Covenant – gold with cherubim facing each other

at each end. This ark (box) contained the tablets that the 10 Commandments were written on.

The children will create the Tabernacle from their supply of play dough. Divide the children into groups of around six. Give each group several containers of play dough, some paper, a large piece of construction paper and markers. Each group will work together to re-create the Tabernacle, dividing responsibilities as equally as possible. For example, one member will re-create the Lampstand and one member will re-create the Ark of the Covenant. The children will correctly place the furnishings on the piece of construction paper, which represents the entire Tabernacle. (It would be too difficult for them to make the outside curtain, so the construction paper will provide those parameters.) They can then use the paper and markers to indicate the curtains and the divider. After each group has re-created the Tabernacle, provide them with an opportunity to share it with the other groups or bring in some adults to listen to the kids describe what they’ve learned and made.

BLESSING

God is available to you.

KNOW YOUR BIBLE

Write the addresses for the four following verses from Exodus on a white board. Instruct the children to choose one of the verses to look up. Choose one child to read each verse and then ask some-one else who looked up that verse to answer the accompanying question.

Read Exodus 25:10. What kind of wood was used to make the Ark?

Read Exodus 25:23. What kind of wood was used to make the Table?

Read Exodus 27:1. What kind of wood was used to make the Altar of Burnt Offering?

Read Exodus 30:1. What kind of wood was used to make the Altar of Incense?

God gave very specific instructions to the Israelites for building the Tabernacle. God had the Israelites use acacia wood for all of these furnishings for great reasons. One reason is that acacia wood was available in the Sinai Desert at this time. Another rea-son God chose acacia wood is because of its strength. Most of us have furniture in our own homes made of oak. Oak is a very strong and sturdy wood. Acacia wood is even harder than oak, and because of this, most wood-eating insects (like termites) leave acacia wood alone. Acacia wood trees also had branches that are protected by “touch-me-not” thorns.

Can you recall any other Bible stories where God gave specific instructions on how to do something? (building Noah’s ark, what trees Adam and Eve could eat from, how the sacrifices were to be made, how the Ark of the Covenant was to be carried)

SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION

2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.”

Although these verses were penned in the New Testament, long after our story today occurred, the words still ring true with the Israelites. The reason they were so excited to build the Tabernacle is that they EAGERLY looked forward to connecting with God. At that time it was through the priests, but still they wanted that desperately. They want-ed the Tabernacle so much that they willingly brought whatever they had—money, gold, cloth—and the craftsmen worked hard to follow God’s instructions.

Form 4 groups. Each group will need a supply of pennies laying flat on a table, along with a shoebox. The people brought their precious met-als and their money for the building of the Tabernacle. One player from each team will move to their team’s pennies and box. At the signal, these four players will move 8 pennies into the box. BUT, they can only use their two index fingers. It doesn’t matter what their method is, but they can’t use any other fingers or body parts to pick up the pennies. The first player to move 8 pennies will win the honor for their group to say the memory verse. Choose a new player from each team and play again.

ACTIVITY

The Israelites had to work together to build the Tabernacle. This task took the help of many people. If the Israelites had not learned to work together, the building of the Tabernacle could’ve been a mess!

The children will create a human knot and work as a team to undo it! Form groups of eight and get in a circle. All the members of the circle will reach out their left hands and grab someone else’s left hand. (This can be the kid next to them or across the circle … anybody.) Next, the members will reach out their right hands and grab someone else’s right hand. Now comes the tricky part that will take much teamwork! The chil-dren will have to untie their “human knot” without letting go of hands.

• Did your team work well together? • Did any frustrations arise? • How did you solve your groups’ frustrations? • Did your group discover a leader? • What qualities made that person a leader? • Do you think that all participants had an important role in this

teambuilding game?

I’m sure the Israelites experienced some frustrations while building the Tabernacle just like some of our groups did. What frustrations do you think came up while the Israelites built the Tabernacle?

Everybody in the group had to pitch in to get untangled, and there were leaders who took charge of helping everybody succeed. All of the Israelites had to pitch in, but Moses was the clear leader. We know that God gives us different gifts and talents. God has given some of us the ability to lead in certain situations, and sometimes we think that it is a “bad thing” to be a follower. What do you think would have happened while the Tabernacle was being built if all of the Israelites wanted to be the leader? People would’ve been arguing all over the desert! It is not a bad thing to be a follower; you just have to know that the thing or the person you are following agrees with the Word of God—our book of instructions!
