“I grew up in a small city outside of Tokyo,” artist Yoshie Green

explained. She dreamed of moving to America after listening to Elvis Presley records over and over. She and her husband of 47 years live

in San Antonio now. While visiting the Lone Star Gourd Festival in Fredericksburg one year,

Yoshie chose how to spend her retirement years. Inspired by her

mentor Judy Richie to strive for the fine art stage of gourd craft, Yoshie

entered competition for the first time in 2012. She has comfortably

cinched numerous 1st place awards since then, including competitions in Kerrville and Arizona. Yoshie incorporates different mediums,

including the paint technique used for Japanese Lacquer Ware.

The miracle of babies can make you yearn for the past as you envision a bright future. In today’s mobile world, family and friends spread farther away and different methods spread news. The quantity of information we receive leads many important messages astray.

If your family is expanding in the digital age, eBabyPool.com can help as you share your news. Designed for expectant parents, they hit a home run in the game of life by making a timeless tradition come alive online.

The fun of predicting baby stats surged in popularity as social media soared. A program developed by eBabyPool posts the tradi-tional guessing game online so everyone can play––and they are!

Like choosing a square in a football pool, competition changes the game––online adds a new dynamic and a touch of irresistible fun. The questions, however, remain the same: Will it be a boy or girl? How much will it weight? When will it arrive? You wonder, too. Babies change our lives long before they choose to arrive.

When nature brings new life to the team, eBabyPool encourages friendly competitiveness that dads can’t contain. Moms like the mobile-friendly site that’s easy to use. Interacting with your world of friends adds competition and doubles the fun for all of you.

eBabyPool.com has all the bases covered. They corral the com-petition and tally winners when the baby debuts so you can focus now on all you need to do. At eBabyPool, all the organizing is done for you! Go ahead––welcome your world to participate...

Sharing your experience with your world of family and friends is easy with eBabyPool––it’s your electronic connec-tion to folks nearby and faraway. Bonds are strengthened when your extended family is actively involved as your baby changes your world and your body long before it arrives.

Family and friends can track your preg-nancy with you –– without being crowded out by commercial distractions designed to draw their attention away. Absent the hustle and bustle of other sites, your baby retains the focus it deserves, without commercial

breaks. eBabyPool keeps your changing world in a special place. Upload a photo––tummy and all, if you choose––and share it

with the link they provide. Some say the tummy tells it all. Month-ly updates of your photos keep the guessing game active and fun as your life, and the life in your body, continue to change and evolve.

Create your own eBabyPool and you may be eligible to win a prize! Invite friends and let the competition start. Only the new baby really knows for sure when the timing is just right to arrive.

A wonderful byproduct of Canyon Lake—above and beyond the purpose of a water supply and flood control—has been the recreation and tourism industries that thrive in our community. While not an original purpose for the construc-tion of the Lake, our local economy has come to rely on the recreational use of Canyon Lake.

My family and I can attest to the wonderful memories made on our beautiful Canyon Lake…as can many of you.

Early this year, the US Corps of Engineers set out to update the Master Plan for Canyon Lake. Many wonderful ideas were sub-mitted for consideration during the community input stage. As the Corps considers that vast input from the community, we hope that recreation and tourism will be officially added to the core mission of Canyon Lake. That additional support can ensure our economy, and those around us, will continue to thrive in the next 50 years as we continue to enjoy this beautiful treasure that’s part of the pack-age we all call ‘home.’

Jen Crownover, guest columnist Comal County Commissioner, Precinct 4Visions for Canyon Lake

It’s not often that we face such huge milestones in our commu-nity, but we have passed several markers recently.

In November, we witnessed the birth of a new city in our Coun-ty by an election of residents—welcome, Spring Branch! The No-vember election also passed a $76 million jail bond, which will be the largest capital project that Comal County has ever taken on. More to come on that at a later date...

In May, we celebrated the ‘birthday’ of our beloved Canyon Lake as she saved us from flooding in torrential rains that could have been much worse. As I reflect on all she provides us and pay tribute to this milestone birthday, I’d say we owe her a lot of thanks.

The vision for Canyon Lake began in the late 1920’s, as new‘settlers’ kept coming to Texas and the need for a water source became more clear. By the 1950’s, specific preparations were un-derway for a lake in our region to serve as a water source and flood control in our very flood prone region. In 1960, at the direction of Congress, specifically under the direct supervision of the United States Corps of Engineers, construction began. In 1964, the gates were closed and Canyon Lake began to fill. In 1966, the Lake was dedicated so she did indeed reach her 50th birthday!

Canyon Lake has served us well. Along with her magnificent beauty, we have a pristine water supply for our region, and count-less millions of dollars have been saved by the disasters her flood capacity prevented. Despite devastation suffered by communities downstream, much more would have happened, if not for the place-ment, strength, and integrity of Canyon Dam.

Jen’s office hours are routinely 8am-5pm, but the question of where she is when will vary. It’s best to call 830-221-1104 or email her at [email protected] to set up a time.

eBabyPool.com, born this spring in the beautiful hills surrounding Canyon Lake, is destined for worldwide success. Contact them lo-cally at 323-363-7006.

The Texas Gourd Society asked last year to buy the cover space as advertising––a standard prac-tice in the industry these days. I declined money for it then and this year too. The cover should earn its spot based on merit, and their’s did.

But their cover photo didn’t run last year. As my home office and the tools of my trade were

swept down river with my living room, mementos, records and dreams––so was my focus. Past, present and future were gone.

Looking back on the year that passed Memorial Weekend, I’m not so sure I was there or all there––I call it the Year of the Blur.

The blur is not uncommon, I’m told, nor is the crawl of recovery. Other survivors in a similar slow boat reminded me again––I’m not alone. The reality of restabilizing takes work and takes time––so I can look back and call myself ‘normal’ or at least, not abnormal.

But life changes arrive in different packages, at different times––all with a different punch for different folks.

As the remarkable cover photo lands in mailboxes, another pre-flood plan can be neatly packed away. The awesome Koi fish design that dresses the cover this month has finally made its overdue debut. Carved from four gourds by artist Michael Ford, it won the Peoples Choice award, among others, at the 2014 Lone Star Gourd Festival.

Michael Munter is the Artist of the Year for the Festival scheduled for August 19-21. Both Michaels faced life changes at retirement; each discovered their new passion for gourd art. Both paths required considerable effort––‘overnight’ success takes time, following work.

Life changes are underway for Kristi Broadway, former Director of the Rec Center and our Canyon Lake Community profile for this issue. It’s the first time in our ten year history that the Canyon Lake Views has profiled anyone twice––and no one is more deserving than Canyon Lake’s perpetual happy face. With all sincerity, Kristi mas-tered the Art of Happiness when she made a decision as a distressed child. She walks the talk and it shows. A smile that’s shared spreads.

Happiness is key to contentment with life and our featured busi-ness this month provides the tie that binds it all together for mine. The website, eBabyPool.com, brings the timeless tradition of guess-ing baby weights online. Babies are major life changers and my babe has been a great source of happiness and contentment––for almost 30 years––success that didn’t happen overnight.

I’m proud my son, Dalton, is a happy, successful and whole personality who awakes everyday with a smile. For me, happiness is remembering to remember what counts, and having faith that whatever path you are on, with all its ups and downs, is teaching what you need to learn, leading you to wherever you should be.

Epic events do put life’s priorities in perspective. Thanks for all the caring responses that everyone sent my way and thanks for listening. Listening is a wonderful skill to learn that never stops teaching.

the health and financial security of one’s fam-ily with a well-designed insurance portfolio.

With the difficulty of understanding in-surance options, many turn to an experienced insurance agent that must stay informed on the constant changes, especially since the in-ception of the Healthcare Reform law. Medi-care and life insurance can be even more difficult to understand.

My best advice is to find a reputable experienced insurance agent for a free consultation. When an issue is complex, the benefit of experience is invaluable and the consultation costs you nothing.

Understanding healthcare reformWith Healthcare Reform enacted, as of March 23, 2010, many

changes took place––some good and not so good. As with any-thing, it depends on one’s perspective for no one system satisfies the needs or desires of everyone.

The new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) law attempts to insure as many as possible by eliminating declina-tions and exclusions due to preexisting medical conditions. Also, many qualify for tax credits which lower their premiums based on factors like number of family members and household income.

A number of essential health benefits are now required like ma-ternity, mental health, cessation for substance abuse and free pre-ventive screenings. There are no yearly or lifetime benefit limits, and dependent children can now stay on family plans to age 26.

With the new guaranteed issue insurance, mechanisms like the shared responsibility tax and yearly open enrollment are required to make it work. Otherwise, some would wait till a medical diagnosis or accident to obtain insurance and drop it after claims are paid. Open enrollment is each fall preceding the January 1st start date of new plans but some qualify for a 60-day special enrollment period outside of open enrollment due to certain life qualifying events.

For those without a special enrollment period, short term medi-cal plans and financial protections which pay a lump sum due to a critical illness or accident offer protection until the next open enrollment period. There are many ways to match ones needs and budget, especially if qualified for discounted plan costs due to tax credits on PPACA qualified health plans. It is prudent protecting

InStyle Accessories, a cool comfort shoe store for men and women, features independent lines of stylish shoes that are properly designed with the support your feet need––none look institutional. Just off the Wimberley Square next to the playscape, stop in to see Kristi or call 512-847-1765.

kristi broadway

The Art of Spreading Happiness...

Her eyes light up and she grins as she greets whoever is heading her way. Kristi Broadway is known all around the lake for her perky, can-do personality––generously doling out encouraging words to everyone she meets. In the fitness industry all of her life, Kristi is fit and energetic. But it’s her attitude that shines.

Refreshingly genuine, the smile she carries with her everywhere sincerely reflects her state of mind. She knows she’s as imperfect as we are. But she walks the talk daily, smiling and cheering, sharing her happiness along the way. Happiness shared, spreads.

Kristi has joined her husband of five years, Larry Broadway, at InStyle Accessories, the upscale comfort shoe store he opened on the Wimberley Square 14 years ago. He’s earned some days off.

Kristi recently resigned from her position as Director of the CRRC Rec Center, a job she competely adored. She loves giving back; she loves the fitness programs, the adults she worked with and worked out with and the kids she coached. Pickleball ranks too. But Kristi will be happy wherever she is. Kristi is happy by design.

At 15, she decided to be happy each and every day. Kristi said it wasn’t hard or even gradual. It’s possible she trained her brain, but she doesn’t remember using mental notes to stay on track, learning good habits, or thinking things through. She doesn’t have to ‘try.’ A positive outlook comes natural. It’s who she is and happy, she is.

Kristi’s childhood was unique. She recalled her mother getting an official letter from the state saying that she could not marry again in Texas. You can marry in Texas only eight times. Unabashed, Kristi laughs and earnestly says, “but I have a lot of dads! There are three that I’ve stayed really close to.” Although some might frown judge-mentally, Kristi saw the upside that is obviously true––maintaining a closeness to three dads is a positive outcome––and no secret to hide.

But tragedy struck. Kristi’s brother was gay––in the 70’s––and raised around macho sports fans and ex-military who didn’t under-stand. After he took his life at 21, she read his journal. It revealed the torment and humiliation he endured, in detail, for being different, a difference beyond his control that he did not choose. She and her sister did not see––or perceive––his misery.

Kristi made a commitment to his memory that she would wake up happy every day and go to sleep happy and it is a commitment she lives by today. His death changed her life and her changed life where ‘positive’ rules has helped improve the lives of others. There were no warning signs or threats. Teasers and bullies should listen: Needling, picking and teasing must stop. It’s not innocent fun, it’s mean and it hurts. If one unintentional perpetrator listens and hears, maybe some young person will gain a few moments of peace.

Kristy remolded the tragedy of losing her brother to create a life-

time of personal happiness: That’s a pow-erful transformation.

As a happy person by choice, Kristi is baffled why anyone chooses otherwise. She asks dismayed, “Why would anyone

choose to be sad?” Confident that happiness is a choice, she’s the proof. As New Age thinkers debate the evasive quality of and require-

ments for happiness, self-help books declare they have discovered happiness is a state of mind that you choose––a decision to change how you think and react, to appreciate all that you have. They should have asked Kristi Broadway; she figured it out so long ago.

There are positive effects in her life today. Goals Kristi achieved with the CRRC team in her 15-year span are a great source of pride: the Rec Center a/c, updated flooring, adding the community building, the garden site and outdoor pavilion. Usually booked solid daily, the Rec Center is now self-sustaining with fees for use nominal or noth-ing. After-hours Kristi volunteered time to the Chamber (at events and formerly, the Board), the CRRC events, hospice and more––more than once, wheelchairing aging friends in declining health around.”

Yet she still found time to find a fella online and fall in love. A match made in heaven? A man who owns a store full of beauti-

ful shoes––well designed with support––meets a woman who owns a whole closet dedicated to her shoe collection and her 18 pairs of eclec-tic boots and who knows her dancing feet require healthy support. Their love of good shoes formed a common bond; they enjoy going to market together where Kristi tries on shoes to ‘test drive ’em all.

Larry’s elderly mom and the store both needed more time. For sev-en years, Kristi enjoyed taking her on outings every other afternoon––and common bonds deepened. When his mother passed as the couple was moving into their new Canyon Lake home, it was hard on both.

They feel blessed that the store stayed dry during two record floods last year––October’s water came close––but dry businesses suffered too. Misleading news coverage that made the village sound closed slowed out of town shoppers to almost none. The local economy dove to an all time low and has peaked since; but recovery varies.

Overworked since the flood, Larry asked if she could help––her de-cision was made. Leaving her CRRC family was hard, but deciding wasn’t. Completion of major projects onsite created a rare lull––CRRC needed her less. She jumped in with both hands and her willing feet.

The Wimberley View newspaper (General Manager & Editor Dal-ton Sweat) has a special annual section called the “Best Of...” InStyle Accessories was chosen by voters in June as Best Shoe & Boot Store in town––and the Kristi effect begins to show!

It’s hard to imagine that Kristi’s energy could be tamed to retire. But wherever her path leads, she’ll be enjoying life, helping others ––listening to Old Timers’ tales from the push end of the wheelchair––feet dancing to the beat. And she’ll be sharing her great smile with those around her––who will in turn share their’s with someone else...

Share happiness ...and watch it spread.

Here are suggestions for updates and im-provements you can make that will help your home sell more quickly.

Add power outlets with USB ports in rooms that lack them, especially in the kitchen, bath-rooms and bedrooms where they’re most

needed. “Younger, more tech-savvy couples and individuals love them,” says Tyler Drew of Anubis Properties Inc. in Los Angeles.

Update the bathroom mirror. For an affordable update, replace the old bathroom mirror with a new framed or vanity mirror. First remove the old outdated mirror that’s most likely glued to the wall. To remove that mirror quickly and safely, wear eye protection in case the mirror shatters and gloves to protect against sharp edges.

Cover the mirror with heavy-duty packing tape to help prevent the glass from falling apart if it breaks. Place a shim beneath a pry bar and gently work the bar down behind the glass. Work gently along the top and sides of the mirror to release a little bit of the mirror at a time. When you are close to the bottom, support it at the top so it doesn’t pop free of the wall and fall on top of you. Once it’s loose, you can gently carry it away from the bathroom.

Refreshen paint. Paint exterior windows, doors, gutters, down-spouts, and trim, then go inside and paint the home’s trim, door-ways and walls that are need refreshening. Consider colors that veer toward quiet and comfort such as Benjamin Moore’s Yosem-ite Sand, Edgecomb Gray, or Carrington Beige. “Gray is a hot inte-rior color now,” says vermont-based designer Amy Thebault.

Rooms painted with lighter colors like white, yellow, and beige help bounce and reflect sunlight and use more natural and less ar-tificial light, according to Chris Ring of ProTect Painters. In cooler months, he says, dark colors such as deep brown and blue absorb sunlight and reduce heating costs. Because of our warm summers, Hill Country homeowners might heed that advice in reverse. Don’t forget ceilings––known as the ‘fifth wall.’ You can improve them with paint or old-style metal or faux-metal tiles, says Beverley Kruskol, owner of MY Pacific Building Inc. in LA.

Attend to landscaping. Landscaping can add 7-15% to a home’s value, according to HabitatDesign.com principals Jessy Berg and Bonnie Gemmell. Focus on mowing grass, removing crab grass, and eliminating dead plants and tree branches. Drew says “dirt and the potential to paint a picture in the buyer’s mind” is far better than a backyard full of dead plants.

Water is necessary for life. Water is the best way to stay hydrated, focused, and aware. We need it to operate smoothly, fa-cilitate digestion, lubricate joints, push out toxins, prevent fatigue from dehydration and give us energy. Alkaline water helps raise the pH of your body so it can hydrate and flush more efficiently and function as it should.

The human body is alkaline by design but it’s functions create acidic by-products. The pH levels in your blood and in the water you drink impacts your health, but maintaining alkalinity––that pH levels measure––is a challenge in today's world.

A low pH indicates an acidic body––an environment that allows disease to flourish––although many believe it is the root cause of all disease. Foods you can eat to maintain your alkalinity are raw vegetables and certain fish, but overall, almost all food the average American eats is acidic.

Added to that, tap water, well water, and water from bottled sources and water-filling facilities contain different levels of con-taminants, tastes and odors, and are mostly acidic. EPA reports that common water contaminants found in municipal water supplies include microorganisms, disinfectants, inorganic chemicals (like arsenic, fluoride, lead and mercury) and organic chemicals.

Dehydration slows your metabolism that can lead to weight gain and impaired mental abilities, and leave you feeling exhausted, hungry and grumpy. As the average American consumes the Stan-dard American Diet, sugary sodas, caffeine drinks and alcohol, the body's balance easily becomes acidic, indicating toxic buildup. Proper hydration detoxes the body of acidic waste overload that the body’s normal elimination functions leave behind.

When specially-designed filters are added to a water purifica-tion system like reverse osmosis, the micro-clustered water mol-ecules produced deliver nutrients to the cells more efficiently and hydrate you faster for optimal results. Antioxidants in mineral rich water fight free radicals that can cause damage to the body on a cellular level.

Filtering of bottled water, if any, varies greatly and most remove both the good and the bad. Distilling systems produce water with a lower pH—basically dead, acidic water––absent the essential min-erals of water found in nature. A natural ceramic conversion pro-cess now transforms water into a living alkaline state while adding essential minerals and antioxidants for optimal hydration power.

You need good water on your path to good health. Be empow-ered. Take charge of your health today.Jennifer Horton is the Owner/Operator of Water Tree of Canyon Lake. She can be reached at 830-719-4372.

by Angela LujanEnergy efficient protection for our homes

Without energy-efficient window treat-ments, as much as 50% of a home’s heating and cooling can be lost through its windows! In addition to looking great, one of the ben-efits of proper window coverings is the protec-tion they provide. Here are some of the ways:

Just as sunscreen protects our skin from damaging ultraviolet rays, window treatments protect the interior of our homes and add to the lifespan of our possessions. A good prod-uct will give 75% to 99% protection when fully closed.

Heat is drawn to cold. In winter, indoor heat escapes through win-dows. In summer outside heat flows in. A good insulating product will greatly reduce this undesirable cycle of loss.

The warmth the sun brings, while nice in the winter, can make a room uncomfortable in the summer. An energy-efficient product will reduce solar heat coming through our windows, protect our interior and lower utility bills..

Daylighting is when we light a room with natural light rather than artificial. You can control how much natural light comes in with a window fashion. Fabrics diffuse light and draw it deeper into the room. You can direct the natural light where it’s needed mostly by titling the vanes on your product. You are in control. Window fashions are available in a range of opacities from sheer to opaque that allows degrees of privacy and light control. A sheer of fabric on a shade will allow light to enter your room yet reduce glare. It maintains a soft view of the beauty outdoors. A middle-rated fabric filters light and diminishes the view of the outdoors, offering more privacy. Opacity blocks virtually all light and allows

complete privacy and light control. There are many in between op-tions to suit your needs.

Sound absorption improves your acoustics. If the sound is com-ing from outside, window coverings will reduce the intensity of it. If the sound is within the room, it helps you control it.

All these benefits and more make proper energy-efficient win-dow treatments well worth the investment. They offer your home increased protection against the sun’s heat during summer and mini-mize heat loss in cold winter months––while saving on utility bills! This will, no doubt, make you smile.

Angela has a Master’s Certification in Drapery Design with many years experience in the window fashion industry; she will help you select what’s right for your room. Canyon Lake Views Page 10 July 2016 Canyon Lake Views Page 11 July 2016

We are blessed that the Hill Country is plenti-ful and diverse. We have a wide variety of most everything, it seems: the terrain, native plants, the bugs, the birds, the wildlife, as well as the popu-

lace who reside here. Different water sources serving homeowners here offer a wide variety of water problems and solutions as well.

Many homeowners deal with problems ranging from high lev-els of calcium, iron, and other hardness minerals to foul smelling hydrogen sulfide odor. Just as fly-by-night roofers converge on an area following a hail storm, our region attracts those who seek to take advantage of residents hoping for a long term solution to their water issues. Sorting through multiple options and different opin-ions and promises of companies you don’t know is daunting.

For average homeowners, technologies used in water treatment are often completely mysterious. Glossy brochures and earnest salespeople promising just what you want to hear but know little about leads to misinformed decisions. Unscrupulous water treat-ment dealers can use confusion to dupe unsuspecting consumers.

The Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ) reg-ulates and licenses industries which impact our air, soil, or water quality. Most homeowners are unaware that, by state law, an indi-vidual must hold a Water Treatment Specialist (WTS) license sim-ply to test a water sample for the purpose of recommending treat-ment. The state mandate applies to cities and unincorporated areas.

For a water treatment company to legally operate, all technicians must be licensed by TCEQ and overseen by an individual with a WTS Class III, the highest level of certification in our field. Cou-pled with the required Continuing Education to stay up to date, the regular recertification is comforting when you’re deciding who to trust with your family’s sole water supply––but is it reliable?

Regretfully, TCEQ struggles with funding to enforce these laws; the sad truth is that a large percentage of water treatment companies operate completely unlicensed––it’s wise to confirm if they are.

A properly trained and licensed technician can de-mystify the techniques and narrow your options for a focused solution to your specific needs. They can design a system to efficiently and effec-tively solve the issues you are experiencing. Recent advances in technology are enabling us to achieve much better water quality with less equipment or maintenance for the homeowner.

Ensure the water treatment company you call is legal and li-censed to work in Texas. The water you drink is too important.

Summer has arrived!by Kim Corolla

Canyon Lake • 830-964-2265

Proud Chamber Members and Sponsors Chamber View

Summer is here! School is out; kids are en-joying their downtime and the rest of us are busy enjoying tourist season.

Don’t forget to invite all your relatives to Canyon Lake so they can swim, float and en-joy our playground that we call home. Some

call us lucky to live here; I say we’re smart. If you lack space in your place… give them a list (courtesy of

the Canyon Lake Chamber) of all our B&B’s, campgrounds, cab-ins, cottages and all other types of lodging available in this lake community surrounded by beautiful hills; we have information on member businesses and things to do, too. You are able to entertain family while helping economic development in our community!

What is at the heart of Canyon Lake that validates us as a vi-brant community? According to the dictionary, ‘vibrant’ means en-ergetic, exciting, alive! When I looked up the word ‘community,’ I found my answer in its entirety.

A community is the sum total of ‘the people,’ society and our neighborhood. Without a doubt, we live in a great community with vibrant people from all walks of life who are energetic, exciting and alive!

Although the community of Canyon Lake is relatively young, it was exciting from the beginning. The Corp of Engineers began building the dam in the early 1960’s. They knew this water source would be needed some day to supply the many communities that were springing up in South Central Texas.

I’ve heard stories from people whose grandparents had prop-erty in Hancock and Canyon City before the dam was built. The state bought properties that they knew the new lake would eventu-ally cover, but some folks would not budge from their homes or farmland until the last possible moment. I’ve been told there are a few houses, buildings, tractors and cars in the deepest parts of Canyon Lake––some near the dam itself.

Scuba divers love nosing around the various areas of the lake. Many students in diving classes complete their final certification here. Our lake and the Gorge are just two of many reasons people come here to study and enjoy. Many have come to study the dino-saur tracks at The Heritage Museum of The Texas Hill Country, too. They shop, play and stay in our community.

Canyon Lake is a one of a kind community. We at the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce are dedicated to reaching out to our tourists, visitors, current residents and those considering a move to this beautiful community full of vibrant hearts. Let us all give thanks for having the opportunity to live in this vibrant com-munity and enjoy LIFE in the best country in the world.

Erica Colston competed at the Regional level in the Optimist Oratorical contest, proudly represent-

ing the Optimist Club of Canyon Lake, Canyon Lake High School and the entire Canyon Lake Community. Following Maddi Morris’s win last year, this is CLHS’s second straight year mentoring a Dis-trict Oratorical Winner. Back to back winners from the same Opti-mist Club is rare!

After winning the girl’s portion of the Optimists’ Oratorical Con-test and a $2,500 College Scholarship, Erica also won the overall and traveled with her mom in June to the World Oratorical Contest in St. Louis to continue the competition. Over 50 youths competed for one of nine $5,000 Regional scholarships with their unique per-sonal presentation of “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others.” While Erica wasn’t awarded Regional placement, students compet-ing at this prestigious level are all winners before they arrive.

CLHS teacher Cynthia Pike was bestowed an Honorary Mem-bership in the Optimist Club of Canyon Lake for her contribution as an Optimist team member who has been instrumental in the success of the Essay and Oratorical Contests.

Ms. Pike extended congratulations to the competing students “for sharing their positive outlooks on leadership and life, not just in their speeches, but in their daily lives as Hawk Scholars at Can-yon Lake High School.” Well said. Because actions speak so loudly, it is daily actions we value most.

Operation Shoe Drop is a project spearheaded locally by 12-year-old Dusti Butler that continues through mid-August. Dusti partnered with Communities in Schools of South Central Texas to bring Operation Shoe Drop to Canyon Lake. Communities in School works to provide sneakers, as well as school supplies, to kids who need them during the school year, but funds and supplies are limited. Last year, Dusti collected new sneaker-style shoes for boys and girls at Startzville, Mountain valley and Rebecca Creek elementaries and she’s at it again.

All sneakers must be new and are needed for both girls and boys in all sizes for ages ranging from 4 to 11 years old. Help kids of Canyon Lake by helping Dusti’s efforts succeed. Kudos to Dusti for her dedica-tion at such an early age to serve her community.

Contact Community in Schools for more information. Communities in Schools of South Central Texas is located at 161 S. Castell Ave., N. Call Community in Schools at 830-620-4247.

Plants that can poison your pets

Did you know that some of the plants you may have planted in your garden are poisonous to your pets if eaten? Here is a list of some plants commonly used in landscaping that are toxic to cats and dogs.

Sago Palms: This has become a very popular plant for land-scaping in this area because they are low maintenance and the deer don’t seem to eat them. Unfortunately, they are extremely poison-ous to dogs and cats. The seeds or “nuts” contain the highest con-centration of the toxin and ingestion of just one or two seeds can have serious effects. vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and liver failure are likely outcomes to ingestion of these seeds. I have seen three dogs poisoned by this plant over the past three months. One seems to be doing OK, but unfortunately the other two have died of liver failure. If you have pets, I highly recommend you remove Sago Palms from your landscaping.

Lilies: Members of the Lilium and Hemerocallis species are con-sidered highly toxic to cats. Ingestion of just one leaf can result in severe kidney damage and death in cats. If you have cats, don’t have lilies! It’s just too risky––your curious cat may try a leaf or two.

Oleander: All parts of this plant are considered toxic for pets. Results of ingestion are GI irritation, abnormal heart function, hy-pothermia, and death.

Castor Bean: These beans are commonly made into necklaces. The poisonous component here is Ricin. Chewing on these neck-laces can cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, seizures, coma and death.

Some other plants that are toxic to pets include Tulips, Azaleas, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, Yew, Chrysanthemum, Amaryllis, English Ivy, Autumn crocus, Pothos, and Schefflera. There isn’t enough space here to list every toxic plant, but more information is avail-able from the Animal Poison Control Center at: www.napcc.aspca.org or 1-888-4-ANI-HELP.

Please be especially careful if you are or plan to be the proud new owner of a puppy or kitten as these youngsters will literally eat anything and have a higher risk of getting into trouble. Take a list of toxic plants for pets with you next time you spruce up your landscaping.

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt an Older Dog

Older dogs are also great therapy for

older folks.

On an average day, Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society

has dogs, older dogs, puppies, cats and kittens for adoption. Adopt a pet in Canyon Lake.

The No. 1 Reason to Adopt

an Older Dog is the

Wisdom and Depth You Can See In Their Eyes

1. Older dogs are house trained. You won’t have to go through the difficult stage(s) of teaching a puppy house manners and mopping up after accidents.

2. Older dogs are not teething puppies and won’t chew your shoes and furniture while growing up.

3. Older dogs can focus well because they’ve mellowed. Therefore, they learn quickly.

4. Older dogs have learned what “no” means. If they didn’t learn it, they wouldn’t have gotten to be “older” dogs.

5. Older dogs settle in easily, because they’ve learned what it takes to get along with the others and become part of a pack.

6. Older dogs are good at giving love, once they get into their new, loving home. They’re grateful for the second chance you gave them.

7. What You See is What You Get. Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality. Puppies can grow up to be quite different from what they seemed at first.

8. Older dogs are instant companions––ready for hiking, car trips, and other things you like to do or just to lay nearby. They just like being with you.

9. Older dogs leave you time for yourself, because they don’t make the kinds of demands on your time and attention that puppies and young dogs do.

10. Older dogs let you get a good night’s sleep because they’re accustomed to human schedules and don’t generally need nighttime feedings, comforting, or bathroom breaks.

Lindheimer Morning Glory is a long blooming, peren-nial vine of Central and West Texas. It is related to the commonly cultivated morning glories, generally cultivars of I. tricolor, a species found in tropical regions of the Americas and grown as an annual. Our native species is more cold hardy and grows as a deciduous, perennial vine locally. It likes full sun, and although it is generally tolerant of dry conditions, it appreciates some supplemental water during droughts.

Lindheimer Morning Glory has 2” to 3” sky blue flowers from April through October. Like other morning glories, they are open morning to mid-day. In its native habitat, it’s found in rocky soils in draws or ravines. Because deer will eat the foliage, it will be found growing up and in other protective plants if deer are present. Lind-heimer Morning Glory is not readily found in nurseries, but is worth seeking out. The seed can also be hard to find commercially. It is, how-ever, readily grown from seed, generally blooming the 2nd season.

The year 2016 marks the 215th anniversary of Ferdinand Lind-heimer’s birth in 1801. Lindheimer, an early resident of New Braunfels, is known as the ‘Father of Texas Botany.’ He collected many specimen of previously unknown plants in Central Texas, and today over 40 plants bear his name.

by Charles SullivanAn increasing number of clients are inquiring about subroga-

tion claims, penalties, and waiting periods imposed on the elderly by Medicaid. Call it what you want, it’s just another tax. The addi-tional outlay affects essential Estate Planning and affects your life.

Planning for transfers was changed considerably for transfers made after February 8, 2006. Congress established a new look-back period of ineligibility for Medicaid for those who transferred assets less than five years before applying for Medicaid.

It’s essential folks know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. For transfers made prior to February 8, 2006, state Medicaid officials would look only at transfers made within three years prior to the application. But for transfers made after Febru-ary 2006, the look-back for all transfers is five years.

The look-back period determines whether a transfer will be pe-nalized. The length of the penalty period depends on the amount transferred. Transfers should be made only with an understanding of all the consequences. Folks who make transfers must be care-ful not to apply for Medicaid before the look-back period elapses without first consulting with an elder law attorney. This is because the penalty could ultimately extend even longer than five years, depending on the size of the transfer.

The law is complicated as we all imagine it would be since it involves our government. Never attempt to pre-date transfers in order to avoid the look-back as there are serious legal consequenc-es for doing so. Also it is not a good idea to transfer assets for Medicaid planning, unless you keep enough funds in your name to

pay for care during the resulting waiting period for Medicaid to ensure you have sufficient re-sources to maintain your present lifestyle.

Future columns will cover the differences in Medicare and Medicaid, as well as supplemental insurance poli-cies you can purchase to protect your hard earned assets from gov-ernment penalties and seizures. The law is complex and conse-quences are significant. From the Front SeatGracie lives with her son. I have never been up to her house

because Gracie always meets me at the top of the driveway pulling her little red wagon with a great big smile on her face.

Gracie is one of the most thankful individuals I have ever met. The first words out of her mouth is “God Bless You.” She is so full of heartfelt thanks, I am truly blessed to take her the Meals on Wheels.

When people come into your life for a season, it is because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you some-thing you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy and peace.

This is what Gracie has done for me during our weekly meet-ings with Meals on Wheels.

I am so blessed that Gracie has come through my life. My joy for meeting her can never be measured in any way, except as a blessing from God. ~ A MOW Driver~

The CRRC Resource Center coordinates the delivery of Meals on Wheels to homebound residents of Canyon Lake. Every Tues-day and Thursday, teams of drivers meet at the CRRC office and spread out with smiles and insulated containers full of food items.

Drivers return with stories––some of them happy, others with concern, but always straight from the heart.

You might meet the minimum requirements for being a CRRC volunteer: a walking, talking human being with a pulse––that proves you have a kind, caring and compassionate heart. But may-be you don’t like to drive that much. That’s okay!

They may find a place for you helping in the Thrift Store or somewhere else. There are so many different things to do at CRRC that you’ll never be bored. It’s a bustling place, full of active folks.

Maybe the Food Pantry might be your cup of tea. They would love to talk with you about the difference you can make.

Whence came the Apaches, Part v: The ancestral homeby Bobby Beddoe, MS

In 1873, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Executive Order

that formally established a Mescalero Reservation. The Mescalero Apaches were made up of local groups and bands of Indians that had loosely joined together. Their name is derived from their de-pendence on the Mescal Agave plant as a food source.

Using Grant’s executive decree, the decision was made to be-gin moving survivors to a remote and undesirable territory located in southeastern New Mexico, near Ruidosa. The acreage, like the population density, has varied since the original order.

After years of trying to rid themselves of the Indian business, between 1906 and 1918, the government finally decided to give them their own land. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, established to act in the best interest of the Indians, allotted 160 acres of land for each head of family, and 80 acres for each single person over eighteen years of age. The government then turned them loose to manage their own affairs, forcing the formerly nomadic people to learn agriculture and succeed or fail by their own ability.

After the Mescaleros had their own plot of land, one problem became apparent. The territory of mostly rugged hill and forest country made the land unsuitable for the unskilled and untrained American natives to make a living in the ‘new’ American way.

They appeared hopeless of any future. Once relocated though, with no skills in farming or raising livestock, they began leasing their land out to local ranchers. This didn’t work out well, however, as few Indians could manage their leasing arrangements; they soon began drifting back to their old aboriginal ways.

A few pursued raising cattle with success and some began tilling

There were two main objectives: (1) The removal of the last remnant of the Mescalero Apache from existing Indian reservations; and,

(2) relocating them by the government, military and civilian officials to some other place.

Sometime around 1000 AD, the Apaches evolved from Apa-chean People in Alaska. The origins of these relics of the past that migrated southward over the next 500 years or so, have yet to be precisely determined by sociologists, anthropologists, archaeolo-gists, historians or scholarly buffs like myself. But it is known that by the 1800’s, thousands of the Apache Indians in many loosely organized bands occupied the contiguous regions of north and Central Texas, and as far west as new Mexico and Arizona.

Unfortunately, thanks to Hollywood, TV flicks, pulp magazines, Western paperbacks and so forth, the Apache became stereotyped as ‘savages.’ As victims of exaggeration, they’ve suffered a fate their culture has never really overcome, not even entirely in cur-rent folklore.

Like many today, early journalists embellished. They told their tales––mostly myths––in a way to get the sensational excitement effect that their reader's expected, and perhaps demanded.

A biased appearance of the Apaches was ‘painted’ by those and other non-scientific disciplines who were far from any studies of anthropologists. This misrepresentation of the Native American tribesmen not only applied to the Apache, it also included other American Indian cultures as well. It is true however that biased accounts exist from all perspectives.

I can remember sitting as close to the silver screen as pos-

sible in my hometown theater during the 50's and 60’s watching, in Technicolor, Western movies as the US Cavalry, along with Anglo settlers, fought against the Apaches, who tried to hold on to their endless parched desert wastelands, inhospitable burning deserts, and wooded hill and mountain regions, too.

Seems like, more often than not, Apache Chief Cochise, the main antagonist in many of those old classics, always came up short, as the motion picture industries' screenwriters, directors, and actors back then cultivated and encouraged their damaging prejudice, thereby wreaking the very fabric of Native Americans onwards, that is, up to more recent times.

From the beginning of cinema to the present day Westerns, the Native American stereotyping has undergone significant changes: Gradual elimination of the stereotypes in our current big budget movies is quite noticeable. The old Western genre appear extinct; a new image of the Native American Indian has appeared on screen.

Hollywood screen directors today cast more Native actors to play the Indian roles and often glean from them the actual Native perspective based on real, unbiased ancestral stories passed down through the ages. They generally however reveal just the tip of the complex culture of the Native American peoples who first consid-ered this land their ancestral home.

their soil. Their farm crops soon became quite productive in the years that followed.

By the early 1920’s, the results of their efforts was at first gener-ally disappointing. They had made small but significant advances in their standard of living. They could function independently and gradually began closing out all leases to non-Indians.

The Mescalero Reservation is today referred to as the Mescalero Apache Tribe. It is the official home that the Mescalero share with their fellow Native Americans, mostly the Lipan Apaches––a tribe that suffered heavily in Texas––and the Chiricahua. Today they are in control over their own destiny without government intervention.

Myth or Reality? Part 3: Jesus Christ With Us Even Now

In two previous articles, we discussed the Good News of the Gospel—Jesus “with us”—given the historical reality of Jesus of Nazareth (the man) in Part 1, and in Part 2, Jesus as The Christ (Savior), who died to fully pay for the sins of the world so that believers are reconciled to eternal, Holy God.

But the Good News doesn’t end there! When Jesus Christ died, He didn’t stay dead! God resurrected Him; Jesus Christ in His glorified body was seen by hundreds of people before He arose and ascended to God the Father.

And the Good News didn’t end with His resurrection! Jesus Christ didn’t leave believers alone to face the temptations and evil of this world. He left His ‘Helper’––“Counselor,” known as The Holy Spirit, who (1) convicts us of our sins, (2) convinces us of the reality that our belief in Jesus Christ alone saves us and reconciles us to heavenly, eternal God, and (3) converts us—changes and transforms our hearts, minds and spirits to become increasingly “Christ-like”—with His attributes of love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentle-ness, self-control. What a power and blessing for believers!

Does that mean that Christians never sin? No! Since God gave all (Christian and non-believers alike) free will, Christians are fully human and fallible, open to the temptations and actions of sin. But, when Christians fail, Christianity suffers.

Christian rock group DC Talk stated it poignantly on their Jesus Freak CD:

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians . . . who

acknowledge Him with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyles.

That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

Thank God that the Christian walk doesn’t have to be that way! Christians can acknowledge/confess and repent of their sins, then get back on track under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Does that mean that all Christians have a life of ease, comfort, even wealth? No! Christians (too) ‘suffer’ in this world, some-times extremely so, because the Satan never gives up trying to defeat Christians to annihilate Christianity. What better way?

But the 24/7 power of the Holy Spirit enables Christians to triumph over a world system “rocked to sleep in the arms of the Wicked One” (the literal Greek translation of I John 5:15)––transforming lives from drug abuse, alcoholism, mental illness, crime, murder, sexual perversions, man’s inhumanity to fellow mankind, etc. into healed, productive and victorious lives.

This power and faith enables our fellow Christians in the Middle East to be beheaded rather than deny Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

This power and faith commands Christians to love and serve

You can tell your child that if they tease you, it means they like you––it makes the child feel better even if it’s hogwash.

The truth is that the teaser makes himself or herself feel superior by making you feel inferior; it’s abusive and it’s cruel.

The real irony is that anyone watching sees it for what it is. The one in the scenario that’s fooled is the jerk doing the teasing

who those watching know is the inferior fool.

Steve and Cindy Meeks lost their home and business, Rio Bo-nito Resort, in “one of the most devastating floods ever,” Steve said. The property has been in the family of 5th generation Texans since “Camp Wimberley” opened in 1932. Rio Bonito Resort is known for generational family reunions––the kids have grown to have kids and grandkids of their own and the family reunions have always been held there. Cindy, now in her 60’s, has never lived anywhere else.

On Memorial Weekend 2015, the Resort was full for the holiday with 110 guests. All guests and their possessions were safely evacu-ated during the hours of warning time Blanco River properties have if floodwaters threaten. The county has installed a new siren warning system as a safety measure beyond automated emergency calls.

Previous floods that generations of family had experienced had only reached as close as five feet below the house and cabin––once. This flood was different, taking everyone by surprise. Water levels of epic proportions were far worse than any before in recorded history.

Due to the historical family’s contributions and the resort’s anchor presence over the years, dedicated fund raisers and teams of volun-teers continue aid. Although in recovery, the Resort has re-opened! Their home has been rebuilt and one cabin is open for rental; more are scheduled to open this month. Over 70 cypress trees were lost––but many remain. As Cindy says, “It’s...different [but] it’s still beautiful.”

And beautiful, it is, indeed. Although the river has plenty of clear water, the deepest swim-

ming hole at Rio Bonito had a steady supply of fresh springfed water even during the long drought. The dependable spring provided water for the Old Timers before Wimberley had piped-in water.

Rio Bonito is back and will soon be back in full swing. When com-
