This is a very busy season for the Club and there is lots of news to catch up on. The April 4thluncheon saw a record crowd at the Inn when new officers were nominated and elected to the Board. The officers to be installed at the May Luncheon will be Carolyn Sawyer as Vice President, Ollie Christopher as Treasurer, Donna Snellgrove as Secretary and yours truly, Betty Ringlee, as President. We expect another big crowd to welcome our speaker, Bob Himes, member of the Gig Harbor City Council. He will share his views on growth and the new moratorium on construction and related issues for the future. DON’T MISS THIS ONE! Be sure to send in your luncheon reservation form (attached at the end of the newsletter) by Wed, April 25th. Thank you all for volunteering and your countless hours of support to the Club. We owe a HUGE “Thank You” to our Vice President, Patricia Frazer, for months of work behind the scenes to arrange our guest speakers. Vice-President’s Message – Patricia Frazer

The speakers at the March and April General Meetings were very informative and

entertaining. They spoke about how their business ventures were developed in Gig Harbor.

Mark Eggen, the founder of Hop Jacks, shared his personal journey of developing this regional

chain of restaurants. His inspiration came from his family experiences growing up in this area

and wanting to create neighborhood gathering places. Giving back to the community through

charitable initiatives continues to be important to Hop Jacks.

Mark Schaefer, the general manager of the Gig Harbor restaurant, is proud of supporting the

staff with training and scholarships to help them in career growth. Thanks to both Marks for

generously giving of their time!

And thank you to Troy Alstead, the founder of Ocean5 and Table 47, for joining us for lunch in

April. He shared the realization of his long time vision to create a space in his community

where people are welcome to play, hang out, dine and connect. Ocean5 and Table 47 reflect

his values about being environmentally responsible. The 55,000 sq. ft. building was built with

energy efficiencies such as geothermal heating and cooling, and maximizing natural light.

Recycled and reclaimed materials were used throughout. The restaurant focuses on locally

sourced food.

select two-person teams and match opponents randomly among those who

attend. It’s a simple game to learn but can be tricky to master. The group is open to everyone

in the Welcome Club regardless of experience level and you can play when you’re available. If

DNA, data sources, research methods, records keeping, and genealogy

with a card. A remind is sent out weekly to determine how many tables we will have and how

many games to bring. We are always looking for new players. Contact Rita with your

Men’s Breakfast Group

Coordinator: Bill Evans, 253-265-0049

Meeting: Second Saturday of each month at 8:30 am at Harbor Place, 1016 29th Street NW,

Men’s Golf

Coordinator: Jim Terry, 253-509-2557

Meeting: Every Monday at various golf courses.

As of this writing we are three rounds into our summer schedule and headed out the door for

round four. The spring weather has been good to us with a 60 degree day this past week.

Greens have been punched and with the warm weather and sun they will quickly be in

summer condition. We have fifteen active members and eight associate members. We are

looking forward to a Great summer where some will break 100, some will break 90 and maybe

even 80. There is great hope for some to find the fairway with their tee shot and of course

there is that elusive 35 foot putt waiting to be made.

Men’s Poker

Coordinator: Bill Evans, 253-265-0049 -- Ray Kittelberger, 253-549-2195

Meeting: Second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. Game host varies each month. A light

dinner, soft drinks, and beer is served. Ideally, the group has seven players at a table. If you

are interested contact Bill or Ray.

Needle Arts

Coordinator: Sharon Panchot, 253-858-2091

Meeting: First Thursday of each month at 10:30 am in a group member’s home. Individual

projects include knitting, crocheting, embroidery, counted cross-stich/needlepoint, quilting,

and hand sewing. The group works until after lunch. An email reminder will be sent a few days

prior to each meeting; group members should notify hostess whether they will be attending.

May 3 – meet at Carolyn Folsom’s home

June 7 – field trip to Ruby Street Quilt Works in Tumwater, WA

Sailing Group

Coordinator: Bob Himes, 253-509-0113

Meeting: The Sailing Group schedules at least two outings a month from May through September (depending on wind, weather, tides, and crew availability) for a 4 to 6 hour day-sail out of Gig Harbor aboard a Catalina 310 sailboat. While there is ample opportunity for group members to get some time at the helm and trimming sails, no prior sailing experience is required. The month of May signals the end of cold, rainy weather and the beginning of the sailing season. In past sailing seasons we’ve spotted harbor seals, sea lions, orcas, and attracted Pacific dolphins who like to swim around the boat. Please contact Bob Himes (253-509-0113) to find out more about this group and express interest in joining us for the 2018 season. A preliminary schedule for May will be distributed via e-mail by April 25th with instructions on signing-up to crew on a scheduled date. Travel Club Coordinator: Mary Bennett, 253-851-2844 -- Dottie Pringle, 253-858-9313

Meeting: Second Wednesday of each month at Rosedale Village Club House (gated community

at 4203 Rosedale Street, Gig Harbor) from 7:00 pm. Contact Mary B. or Dottie for the access

code to the security gate. Future travel club outings include:

May 22 to May 25 Gearhart by the Sea in Gearhart, OR

A fun get away. Reservations should be made at 800-547-0115. Refer to the Welcome Club to get the discount. Call Bill

Evans, 253-265-0049 after you’ve made reservations and let him know that you’re planning to join us. June 30th Cruise and picnic on Sucia Island - $129

Reservations should be made with Freedom Tours, 855-785-3188. Includes transportation, cruise to one of the beautiful San Juan Islands and Lunch. Let Mary Bennett know you’re going so she can arrange for carpooling.

July 13th at 7:00 pm Tacoma Rainiers Game @ Cheney Stadium This is always a popular event. Bring the family. $13.50 includes admission to the game and a ballgame hotdog and

fireworks. The money needs to be turned in to Mary Bennett by May 15th.

July 27th Tillicum Village Cruise/Dinner, Blake Island, WA Plans are to board the Bremerton Ferry, walk the two blocks to the Argosy Cruise Dock,

New Activity Proposed

A bowling activity group, traditional ten-pin and/or duck-pin bowling, has been proposed. Ray

Kittelberger and Nancy Christopher are organizing a bowling group and want to meet with club

members interested in participating in the activity. The new group would bowl at the Ocean5

facility in Gig Harbor. If you are interested, please contact Ray (253-549-2195) or Nancy (253-

265-2863) by June 1, 2018.

Opportunities to Help Keep Our Community Looking Great

Downtown Waterfront Alliance volunteers water the

beautiful flower baskets that grace our waterfront every

summer. Two-person teams water approximately 75 baskets

between 5:00 am and 7:30 am each morning. Each team

usually waters 2-3 times a month. Last summer eight

Welcome Club members participated in this effort. Our

teams were Chuck and Charli Meacham, Harris Atkins and Dick Russell, Bill Evans and Dave

Ringlee, and Ken Tolar and Bob Himes. If you would like to get involved there is a slot open on

Saturdays helping an experienced “Waterer”.

On Saturday May 19 from 9-Noon, The Alliance is sponsoring the 4th Annual Downtown

Waterfront Spring Clean Up. We meet at Skansie Park and bring our own tools. There will be

an appreciation lunch at the conclusion of the event. Last year there were 10 Welcome Club

Members involved and one of our projects was to clean up and bark portions of Donkey Creek

Park.

If you would like to help on either of these projects, call Harris Atkins at 253-858-6270.

Meet our new Secretary

Welcome to the newest officer of our Club – Donna Snellgrove. Donna and her husband, Ed, moved to Gig Harbor 10 years ago after raising their family in Tacoma. She trained as a registered nurse and worked for the Tacoma Public Library in children’s services. Donna and Ed have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Her family and friends are most important to her, but she finds time as well to read, shop, decorate, scrapbook, and play cards. Donna joins a great team of officers with Betty Ringlee, President, Carolyn Sawyer, Vice President, and Ollie Christopher, Treasurer.
