Welcome ...

SEI DYO, CHAIRMAN & VETS DYO (wife)

On behalf of the Reunion Committee, we would like to welcome the internees, their families and friends to the Gila River Internment Camp 50th Anniversary Reunion.

While some of you are too young to have been alive during World War II, we hope that your time spent here will instill a deep pride within you for your forefathers and the hope and perseverance they showed during their darkest days as Japanese-Americans. There is no bitterness here this weekend- something we can all learn fi·om. There is, instead, a monument to the triumph of the human spirit.

For the former internees, this weekend is a time to greet old friends, some whom you have not seen since you left this place. It is also a time to pay tribute to those who are no longer with us, who struggled a/,ongside us to make the best of a bad situation.

Although it is sometimes easier to refiect on the atrocities infiicted on the Japanese-American population dur-ing World War II, it is of greater character to refiect on the unity it brought forth in this community. The joy of living did not cease to exist merely because it was surrounded by barbed wire. Rather, the collective strength of the individuals and families here were able to make Gila River a temporary home while never losing sight of the freedom and future that laid ahead.

We hope that all of you will enjoy this weekend and take home with you new memories. We hope that you ·will share with one another how the last 50 years have shaped your life and how you experienced victory through adversity.

Dedication

The monuments, the events and this program for the Gila Relocation Center Dedication/Reunion are dedicated to three diverse groups. First, in memory of the Isseis, the first generation, who provided the pioneer spirit by immigrating to the United States from a secure homeland to settle in California in the early 1900's. Their commitment to success was interrupted for three years during World War II. Those years of internment would probably have been their most productive since arriving to this land of opportunity had they not been confined. The Isseis' teachings and guidance to their families before, during and after the internment were invaluable.

6

. Second, to honor the Niseis, the second generation, of whom over 1,000 young men entered the United States Armed Forces from the Gila Camps to serve their Country. At least 22 of the men are known to have given their lives while in the Service. Others to be remembered are those who left the camps to work in factories, farms, and offices to aid in the War effort. After the War, the Niseis returned to California and other states to assimilate into various communities, and there they flourished. Despite being faced with discrimination and prejudice, they served successfully at positions in business, agriculture, government, and various other professions. Because of the good examples set by many Niseis, they are often referred to as the "model minority."

Finally, in awareness to the Sanseis, the third generation, and future generations of all races and religions to whom the torch will pass. The coming generations need to be vigilant of what occurred at these camps so that compassion, concern and assistance can be displayed to any other grou:p who might be confronted with similar

7

injustices in the future. They are encouraged to become involved in issues which affect their physical, political, social, and economic environments to preserve the rights for all mankind.

America's Concentration Camps

The majority of the internees of Gila River Relocation Center are living proof that inasmuch as the Constitution of the United States was written to protect the rights of all Americans during World War II, it FAILED!

Over 55 years ago, 80,000 American citizens and their parents, and 40,000 pioneers from Japan who came to America and made their homes, were forced into concentration camps and incarcerated by the U.S. government. Among those internees, 17,000 families of Japanese ancestry were placed against their will in the Gila River Relocation Center.

In November, 1994, the Japanese American National Museum sponsored the Family Expo which brought together the Japanese American legacy and involved various Japanese community groups as well as 10 relocation and other internment camps throughout the United States.

Displays of Gila River Relocation Center become one of the feature attractions and will be on display in the Arts and Crafi Center. The participants in the creation of the display were as follows:

Chairman: Construction and Display:

Sei Dyo Chico Masai Henry Sato Sue Koyama Hy & Mitsie Shishino Ben Tonooka Yets Dyo

Other Participants:

Stone Ishimaru (donor of many of the pictures) ShoNomura Taka & Micky Nomura Helen Mishima Harry Yasumoto Ichiro Ota Jim Makino

And many others that worked behind the scenes.

JAPAN ESE AMERICAN GIS There were over 500 Nisei who volunteered or were drafted into all branches of the United States Anned Forces which included the famed ''GO FOR BROKE" units of the 1 OOth Infantry Battalion arid the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the key roles of the Niseis who seived in the militaty intelligence service (MIS) in all branches of the Anny, Marine, Navy and Special Service groups for all of the Allied Fighting Forces in the south pacific.

Merrill Marauders arrived in North Bunna on February of 1944 with 14 Nisei Linguist/Infantry men to make series of daring and extremely dangerous raids to the enemy in the China-Burma India Theater ·of War.

Nisei combat soldiers played an important role at the "Battle of Cassino" and the Beaches of Anzio under the Fifth Army which was in command by General Mark Clark. Casualties were so high that in the assaults to take Cassino out of 832 men, less than 500 men remained when they were ordered back.

30

November 1, 1942 The MILITARY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE LANGUAGE SCHOOL opens at the Presidio, San Francisco, with four NISEI instructors and 60 students, 58 of whom are Japanese American. The school is later fo rced to move to Minnesota after the exclusion order.

MILITARY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE

Their translation skills were used to decipher captured enemy-documents such as maps, battle plans, orders etc., which helped the allies know what the enemy was planning and when. The capture and translation of such documents played an important role in many battles in the Pacific, including the invasions of the Philippines and Okinawa. Interpreter's skills were used to interrogate captured prisoners of war and to persuade cornered enemy units to surrender. The Military Intelligence

31

Service Language School (MISSALS) opened in November 1, 1941, in San Francisco; it moved to Minnesota in May of 1942. All told, nearly 6,000 Japanese Americans served in the Military Intelligence Sen·ice during and after World \Var II. Major General Charles Willoughby, General McArthur's intelligence chief stated ''The Nisei saved a million lives and shortened the war by two years".

IRA HAYES

Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Sacaton, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 194 2 and fulfilled his dream of being an Indian warrior in the old tradition. He became a sharp-shooter and a hero and was one of the soldiers who raised the U.S . flag on top of Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island oflwo Jima in 1945 . The scene was captured in this Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph by Joseph Rosenthal and expressed in a statue in Arlington, V.A.
