ABOUT GILDA’S CLUB Gilda’s Club is named in honor of comedian Gilda Radner – one of
the original cast members of Saturday Night Live - who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985 and passed away in 1989 at the age of 42.
Following her death, Gilda’s husband, actor and comedian Gene Wilder, Joanna Bull and many of Gilda’s friends founded Gilda’s Club in her
memory. The first Club, with its signature red door, opened in 1995 in New York City. In 1997, Gilda’s Club South Florida opened its doors and is the 2nd
oldest Gilda’s Club affiliate.
So that no one faces cancer alone™ – Gilda’s Club South Florida is a place where men, women and children whose lives have been touched
by cancer, as well as their families and friends, can feel they are part of a welcoming community of support.
LETTER FROM CEODear Friends and Supporters of Gilda’s Club South Florida,
This year we celebrated our 19th anniversary providing free cancer support services to the South Florida community. The steadfast support of our donors, members and friends has allowed us to continue expanding the types of services and programming we offer – such as our Kids CAN program to educate students in Broward County and our Women of Color Series. As we head into our 20th year, innovative programming is already in the works as we strive to better serve our community and its needs.
This year was also a year of transition. After nine years as the CEO at Gilda’s Club South Florida, I retired. I cannot thank each of you enough for your kindness and generosity and most importantly the memories we have together. On June 1st Kim Praitano became the new CEO and she will work tirelessly with each of you to continue expanding the mission of Gilda’s Club.
Thank you for being our partner and for your unwavering support to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Gilda’s Club South Florida looks forward to the future and our milestone 20th year of services.
Sincerely,
Shelley Goren, CEO

PROGRAMS OVERVIEWGilda’s Club South Florida complements the medical component of a person’s care by providing support and education for the cancer patient and their family to help them learn to live with cancer – whatever the outcome.
SUPPORT GROUPSGilda’s Club offers ongoing peer-based support groups facilitated by licensed professionals for those with a diagnosis, their family and friends, survivors who are post treatment and members who are bereaved.
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES Healthy Lifestyle workshops reduce stress, improve health maintenance, and promote creative expression. Gilda’s Club offers classes such as yoga, watercolors, book club, and writing connection.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Educational workshops may address particular diagnoses, treatments, side-effects and survivor challenges, as well as topics like insurance, finances, legal issues, nutrition and so much more. The workshops aim to provide new learning opportunities on a variety of relevant topics for our members and the community.
NOOGIELANDNoogieland™ is a place for children and teens who have a loved one with cancer, who have lost a loved one to cancer, or who have cancer themselves. The Noogieland™ Program makes sure that everyone in the family – mom, dad, brothers, and sisters – get the social and emotional support they need. During Noogie Nights, children find healthy ways to express their emotions through art and play.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Social connections help to build a sense of community and
belonging among Gilda’s Club members. These events include Holiday Parties, the Noogiefest Halloween Party, and our annual Birthday Bash.
RESOURCES & REFERRALS Resources & Referrals offered to our members include a
resource library and referrals to resources in the broader community when needed.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Kids CAN - CANCER AWARENESS NOWFunded by the United Way of Broward County
Four years ago, Gilda’s Club South Florida developed Kids CAN: Cancer Awareness Now, an educational program for school aged children. The Kids CAN program provides middle and high school age youth in Broward County with important knowledge about cancer awareness, prevention, and supporting a loved one through their cancer journey. This one hour, dynamic presentation is taught by a registered oncology nurse and the Gilda’s Club Program Coordinator.
The data collected from students after the presentation demonstrates an 80% increase in knowledge about cancer prevention, detection, and coping with a diagnosis.
The project had a milestone year during 2015-2016 educating a record number of students. Kids CAN was presented in over 130 locations, reaching approximately 3,500 students in Broward county.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: WOMEN OF COLOR SERIES Funded by Susan G. Komen Miami/Fort Lauderdale
The Women of Color Series was created to address the healthcare disparity between incidence rate and survival rate of breast cancer in African American women. The program aimed to increase breast cancer and breast health awareness among uninsured women of color in Broward County through interactive educational workshops. The workshops were hosted within communities with a high population of uninsured and under-insured women of color. Respected professionals from local hospitals delivered culturally sensitive, empirically-based information on breast health, breast cancer, medical treatments, and psychosocial care with an emphasis on the importance of screening and early detection.
Through a series of five community-based educational workshops in Broward County, Gilda’s Club has been able to educate women of color about breast cancer, early detection, and treatment. This year, lecture attendance surpassed expectations and Gilda’s Club was able to reach over 200 women in our community.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:THE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROJECTFunded by The Harold D. Franks Cancer Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward
Recent reports by the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute found that preventable factors such as poor diet and inactivity attributed to 1/3 of the cancer deaths in America and that psychological stressors can affect a tumor’s ability to grow and spread, respectively. In response to these reports and several more, Gilda’s Club launched The Healthy Lifestyles Project - a four part series dedicated to nutrition, exercise, cognitive health and coping skills. Each Healthy Lifestyles workshop was designed to address the findings in these reports by teaching new skills or healthy options to anyone impacted by cancer in the different focus areas.
Workshops included: Decoding Food Labels, Fighting Cancer with your Fork, Tai Chi, Exercise Basics, Navigating Dr. Google, Casino and Game Night, Crochet 101, Ikebana - Japanese Flower Arranging
