STATEMENT OF THE NOMINEES ACHIEVEMENT

Founded in 1988 by Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte, Saucier+Perrotte Architectes is a multidisciplinary practice internationally renowned for its institutional, cultural, and residential projects. The firm represented Canada at the prestigious Architecture Biennale of Venice in 2004, and has been honoured with numerous awards, including 7 Governor General’s Medals (presented by the Royal Architectural Insitute of Canada) in Architecture, three P/A Progressive Architecture honors (presented by Architecture Magazine), and two International Architecture Awards (presented by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies). Saucier+Perrotte’s highly acclaimed buildings have been published the world over, reflecting the office’s status as one of Canada’s premier design firms. The office continues to add to its significant body of built work in Canada, to expand its international portfolio of work abroad, and in 2009, Saucier + Perrotte received the RAIC Award of Excellence for Best Architectural Firm in Canada.

The firm believes that the architectural process can touch all aspects of design intervention — from master planning and redevelopment to single family homes, from sustainably-designed dwelling complexes to museums and theatres, from interiors to object design. Since its inception, Saucier + Perrotte has integrally linked its architecture to geology and the landscape, stressing the physical and symbolic importance of the site and reflecting the firm’s understanding of architecture’s role in shaping the contemporary city and the rural landscape.

Located in the heart of Montreal’s ‘Little Italy,’ Saucier+Perrotte Architectes occupies a 60-year-old industrial building converted by the firm. The partners are proud to be part of the renewal of this area of the city.

S+P projects that have garnered top awards include the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences/CDRD, Scandinave les Bains Vieux Montréal, the Private Residence and Guest House in the Laurentian Mountains, the Communication, Culture and Technology Building (University of Toronto at Mississauga), the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (Waterloo, Ontario), and the First Nations Exhibition Pavilion in Montreal, all of which have received, among others, Governor General Medals and Awards in Architecture; River City Toronto, the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building at John Abbott College (target LEED Gold); the new Schulich School of Music Building (McGill University); the New College Student Residence (University of Toronto); the School of Architecture and Design for University of Montreal; Gerald-Godin College in Ste-Genevieve; the Canadian Embassy in Abu Dhabi; Michel Brisson_ menwear stores in Montreal; and the Philippe Dubuc stores in Montreal and Quebec.

Ongoing major projects include River City, a 1000-unit, 3.8 acre LEED Gold master plan in Toronto’s industrial West Don Lands; Thompson Residences, a mixed use residential project in downtown Toronto; Rack House D, a residence/hotel in Toronto’s Distillery district; Lewis Farms Community Center in Edmonton; Gabrielle-Roy library in Québec City; and The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) Renewal Project.

Throughout the firm’s history, Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte have been involved in lecturing and teaching locally and abroad. Gilles has taught at MIT, McGill, and University of Montreal and has lectured at AIA Seattle and San Francisco as well as for the Séminaire international Phyllis Lambert. André is also active in architectural education, often an invited critic, and has spoken at the Annual Conference of the Society of College and University Planning. Past lecture series for S+P have included talks at several universities, the New York Architectural League, and “Architecture Rampant” at the Royal Ontario Museum. Notably, Gilles was one of three architects in Canada invited to accompany the Governor General team to promote Canadian culture through a series of state visits to Finland and Iceland. In addition to the 2004 Architecture Biennale in Venice, Saucier + Perrotte has previously been part of three important exhibitions: “Les lieux de la couleur,” presented at the CCA in 2000, “Childhood Landscapes / Topographical Unfoldings” presented in Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Buffalo (USA) between 2002 and 2004, and more recently “Substance Over Spectacle” in Vancouver (2005). In 2002, the Canadian Centre for Architecture began archiving architectural drawings and models by Saucier+Perrotte, and in 2007, the CCA selected the firm to design its exhibition on the Oil Crisis of the 1970’s, entitled “1973: Sorry, Out of Gas.”

Saucier+Perrotte is regularly invited to participate in major international competitions and has been a finalist in several in recent years. The firm was short-listed for the Bogota International Convention Center Competition, the Fallingwater Educational Cottage Competition, the Cantos National Music Centre in Calgary, the New Montreal Concert Hall, the new Montreal Planetarium, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Grande Bibliothèque du Québec, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, and the AIST African Institute of Science and Technology International Competition in Nigeria.

Architectural competition for Gabrielle-Roy library in Quebec City, Winner

COMPLEXE SPORTIF SAINT-LAURENT

The project site is situated between the existing Émile Legault School and Raymond Bourque Arena, both of which are horizontal in form and neutral in character. For this project, it thus became vital for the design of new sports complex to create a visual and physical link between the Marcel Laurin Park (to the north of the site), and the projected green band that will run along Thimens Boulevard.

The sculptural nature of the project creates a strong link between these two natural elements in the urban

fabric. Two angular objects — one prismatic, white and diaphanous, the other darker and stretched horizontally — embrace the specific programmatic functions of the project but simultaneously transcend these, inviting users and passersby from the boulevard, while serving as a signal for the passage toward the park beyond.

The two volumes appear to float, suspended by the kinetic energy emanating from the heart of the project, thereby evoking the dynamic nature of the activities (sports, athletics, training) taking place within.

STADE DE SOCCER DE MONTRÉAL

On the site of the former Miron quarry and a future Ecological Park, the new Stade de Soccer intérieur emerges from the park’s artificial topography as a layer of mineral stratum recalling the geological nature of the site. The mineral stratum is articulated by a continuous roof which cantilevers over the entry plaza and folds down over the interior soccer field. It extends to the

ground to become the spectator seating for the outdoor field in the next project phase. To ensure the unity of the soccer centre over different programs and construction phases, the stratum appears as a single gesture with laminated wood structure supporting the roof. The roof’s crossing beams form a seemingly arbitrary lattice suspended over the entire site.

ANNE-MARIE EDWARD SCIENCE BUILDING AT JOHN ABBOTT COLLEGE

Located on a campus designed along Lac St-Louis in the first decade of the twentieth century, John Abbott College is home to more than 5000 post-secondary students, faculty and staff members. Its new Science Building is a state-of-the-art facility intended to foster the interdisciplinary nature of science, collaborative study and experiments, and the need for formal and informal learning. Designed as a showcase for sustainability, the singular, iconic form promotes a variety of pedagogical approaches through flexible classrooms, laboratories, learning centres, and informal spaces where ideas can be exchanged and creative interaction can unfold. The architecture stems from the landscape, taking cues from its context. On the site is a majestic gingko tree that was envisioned

as a centerpiece for a beautiful, collegial, outdoor gathering space. The building’s form first extends from the campus centre, then folds to frame a public courtyard around this tree. The landscape flows into the foyer, becoming an interior topography, which transforms at the fulcrum of the building into a light-filled, vertical circulation space connecting the sciences. An architectonic tree, analogous to that of the adjacent gingko, this atrium space contains the grand staircase and branches that extend through the building as built-in wayfinding elements and benches. The vertical link thus becomes a public interior garden, emphasizing the connection between the natural environment and the type of learning that takes place within the building.

UBC FACULTY OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES / CDRD

The design reflects UBC’s world-class pharmaceutical science researchers, faculty, and the University’s status as an internationally recognized institution in scientific endeavors. Since architecture can, perhaps more than ever, give an international presence to particular schools and departments within universities, the design itself is intended to play a significant role in attracting and retaining the best in the scientific community from around the world.

The initial concept stems from the idea of trees whose branch system forms a canopy floating above the ground. As this organic network is abstracted, it is subsequently given tectonic manifestation, and the architecture takes on a more geometric form. The striking design provides enjoyable, livable spaces for research and learning, creating public and private spaces for the exchange of ideas. The conceptual tree trunks become atria filled with natural light permeates the adjacent spaces (laboratories, offices, etc.)..

BOGOTÀ INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER

Astonishingly powerful in their topographic presence, the Cerros Orientales and Monserrate are defining features of Colombia’s landscape and Bogotá’s cityscape. As structuring elements of the city, they exist as the beautiful background against which unfold the lives of the inhabitants of Bogotá. Cradled between the mountains and the river, this stunning landscape gives the city its unique identity.

The new architecture for the CICB is designed as a reflection of this majestic topography.

An emblematic work of architecture — a signature building for Bogotá and for Colombia — the Bogotá International Convention Center (CICB) takes root in the physical and cultural landscape of the city. These literal and symbolic topos are the elements that actuate the architectural approach of the new CICB project, whose bold architectonic form becomes not only the centerpiece for the urban plan of the Fairs, Expositions, and Conventions node of the city, but also the catalyst for regeneration of the central zone of Bogotá and its future urban development.

SCANDINAVE LES BAINS OLD MONTREAL

Located in the heart of historic Old Montreal and facing the vibrant piers of Old Port, Scandinave Les Bains Vieux-Montréal is an urban spa whose purpose is to provide a thermal therapy experience that engages each of the body’s senses. The building, rebuilt half a century ago after extensive fire damage, has housed warehouse functions until recently when it was acquired by the new owners: the new spa is positioned at the ground/entrance level. The formal parti is derived from the contact between

hot and cold — more specifically, the naturally occurring phenomena associated with these conditions. The design distills the idea of cool glacial forms and the warmness of volcanic rocks, whose duality is articulated through both the spa’s forms and materials.Visitors are immersed in a unique, environment where walls, floors and ceiling are slightly angled according to a notion of interior topography. These angles, though subtle, heighten awareness of the corporeal relationship with one’s surroundings, grounding each visitor for that

KUTCHING HOTEL, MALAYSIA

The hotel is located in a developing zone of Kuching, on an island in the Sarawak region of Malaysia. The project insists upon the relationship between the object (composed of the tower and its base) and the surrounding natural elements (mountain, river, vegetation) to create a new landmark for the city of Kuching.

The building is grounded in the Sarawak landscape. It takes root in the soil (as does a tree) and folds upward as it rises into the sky. The tower creates a link between the Sarawak earth and the sky. With its height of 135 meters, the tower creates an iconic figure in the Sarawak skyline.

The hotel tower sits perpendicular to the river, taking advantage of the views toward the meandering river

landscape. The guestrooms facing southwest look at the downtown district, while the rooms oriented northeast offer a spectacular view to Mount Santubong.

Like the roots of a giant tree, the base of the complex moves up the ground plane which folds to cover the service functions of the hotel. This folded surface creates a new ground plane which becomes the formal entry for the hotel. This slightly sloped landscaped area opens out from the hotel’s main lobby and faces the entrance of the convention centre. The plane folds up again to cover the volume of the ballroom and generate the base of the tower, which contains the public components of the hotel and connects them visually to the Sarawak River.

RESIDENCE AND GUEST HOUSE IN THE LAURENTIAN MOUNTAINS

This residence and guest house is located near the ski hills of Mont Tremblant. Pierced in a singular gesture by an oblique interior stair, the main house consists of three bedrooms, living areas, a sauna, a transformable recreation room, and, typical of the region’s cottages, a screened outdoor living room. The residence, composed of three superimposed volumes aligned with an entrance-level pool, is placed within a fold in the landscape, creating an intimate exterior space framed by the north façade and a three-meter-high rock outcrop. This location allows for several advantages in terms of exposure to the sun, wind, and the public realm.

Erosion seems to have caused the blocks to glide laterally, slightly out of synch with each other, yet together forming a harmonious, clear composition. Analogous to the other building blocks, the guest house is envisaged as a fourth prism that has slid westward. The pool deck, between the residence and guest house, affords a sense of enclosure while providing a breathtaking panorama of the rolling mountains. Due to the dramatic slope of the site, two of the volumes of the main house are visible from the entry; the three stacked blocks are only perceived once inside or from the lower portion of the site.

SAUCIER+PERROTTE ARCHITECTES OFFICE

Located at the west end of Montreal’s little Italy, Saucier + Perrotte architectes occupies a 60-year-old clothing manufacturing building that has been converted by the firm. The three storey brick building is situated in a neighbourhood characterized by its peculiar mix of low density residential typology and old industrial buildings. The building opens up to the street by means of large windows with minimal black protruding frames. Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte are proud to be part of the renewal of this area of the city.

The converted building is mixed-use, the lower two storeys containing the S+P office while the top floor houses two residences. The entrance to the office guides visitors via a

ramp to the public area containing the reception, conference room, administration, an artist’s studio and gallery. Also located on this floor is the workshop facility where models and furniture are made. The space is punctuated by a grand stair that ascends through a 20 square meter opening in the concrete slab, a perforation made during the renovation, designed expressly to connect the two lowers storeys.

On the middle floor is the main design studio space, organized by rows of steel tables positioned end to end. The lighting system, designed by the architects, reinforces the organization of the space. Natural light pervades the space, entering from both the street and alley facades.

SCHULICH SCHOOL OF MUSIC, MCGILL UNIVERSITY

The design for the new Faculty of Music Building gives prominence to the southeast corner of the McGill University campus at Sherbrooke and Aylmer Streets in downtown Montreal. The new building is adjacent to the historic Strathcona Building, the existing home of the Faculty of Music. The site is a narrow strip of land between Aylmer Street and the east wing of the existing faculty building. The

multimedia studio anchors the design. It is a polished limestone volume almost five stories high that is « embedded » three stories into the ground at the north end of the lot. Practice rooms and technical studios also inhabit the underground realm south of the multimedia studio. Above these submerged spaces, at street level, are located the recital hall and main entrance. A folded concrete plane defines these spaces and appears to

PERIMETER INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS

Riding the controversial line between public and private space, this research institute attempts to subvert the usual hard thresholds established by private enterprises in the public realm. The site is on the shore of Silver Lake, at the northern edge of Waterloo’s downtown core and the southern edge of the city’s central park. Adjacent to the primary pedestrian access between the University of Waterloo campus and the city centre, the site is an urban wilderness between clearly defined worlds.

The design takes inspiration from the wide-ranging, hard to define concepts that make up the subject matter of theoretical physics, at once micro- and macro-cosmic, rich in information and of indeterminate form and substance.Between city and park, the Perimeter Institute expands and inhabits the improbable space of the line separating the two. The building defines the secure zones of the

COMMUNICATION, CULTURE, INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY BUILDING

Located at the edge of the University of Toronto at Mississauga Campus, the new building assumes the role of an interface. Organized along the principal façade, it is closely bordered by a park on one side and a new courtyard garden on the other. Its main circulation creates a linear public space that provides a connection between the Student Centre and the Library as it links the landscape to the building’s public and educational spaces. CCIT becomes a place of transition, adjacency

and inhabitation all at once.

The glazed vertical surface of this connection acts as a thickened membrane that serves a technological filter between the existing, natural material of the forest and the tamed, controlled environment of the building and its garden. At the level of the ground, the membrane is completely transparent; the line between exterior and interior disappears. The plane of the earth forms a

NEW COLLEGE STUDENT RESIDENCE, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

The New College Residence of University of Toronto is intended to be a meeting place, a venue for the exchanging of ideas within both an academic and urban setting.

The organization of the architectural elements reflects the relationship of the student community with its surrounding urban campus environment. The lower levels become a gathering place for the community at large. Raised above the street, the mezzanine level contains the administration offices and reception and provides access to the residences above and the ground floor below. The versatile ground floor

provides a theatre for public performances along with quiet study halls for the large student population.

Two unique hanging gardens promote the well-being of student life on campus. On Spadina Avenue, a wall of large perforated masonry plates floats above the transparent mezzanine level. This brick volume is complimented by a zinc and glass-clad volume which contains the East Garden and faces the St. George Campus. This three-storey space is a place of repose as well as an exterior community room available to all residents.

MICHEL BRISSON BOUTIQUE

To transform this seventies era, modern heritage building (formerly a National Bank) into a new space dedicated to contemporary fashion, the first step was to simplify the overall structure, which had been subjected over the years to a series of additions and renovations. The building’s interior was thus stripped to its original brutalist structure, which revealed itself to be surprisingly striking. The sculpted, corrugated concrete of the vault and mezzanine, the structural supports, and the original exterior brick together became the mineral shell from which the project took shape.

The ensemble of the new elements, such as smoked glass, mirrors, and movable display elements work in counterpoint to the building’s original structure. The luminous ceiling stretches to fit the form of the mezzanine; the ceiling therefore illuminates the zone of the movable display cases, and contrasts with the clothing racks, which function as linear lighting for the space, suspended from the second floor ceiling like stalactites.

FIRST NATIONS GARDEN PAVILION

The First Nations Garden is a permanent pavilion for the commemoration of the Great Peace of Montreal of 1701. It is a crossroads of cultures, designed to help visitors discover the customs of the first inhabitants of North America. It also offers an opportunity for the First Nations to share their traditions, wisdom and knowledge.

The project is a museum within the garden. Occupying less than 2% of the garden grounds, the pavilion is mostly outdoor space. Built along the garden’s main pathway, the pavilion metaphorically raises the path to reveal the cultural memory of the place. The undulating roof recalls a wisp of smoke through the trees. Outdoor displays sheltered by the roof are framed by two indoor spaces at opposite ends of the building – exhibition and

Adjacent to the Rivière-des-Prairies, the former Jesuit Monastery has a commanding presence in the village of Sainte-Geneviève. The monastery, built in 1933, was designed by architect Lucien Parent in the Lombard Style. In the 1990’s, it was chosen to house a new French College at the western extremity of the Island of

I have known Gilles and André since the beginning of our studies at the School of Architecture at Université Laval in 1978 and I can confirm that for both these talented architects, professionally associated for now 30 years, the quest for excellence in design is a mark of their recognized work. Numerous awards and distinctions throughout the years, here and abroad, are a testimony of the exceptional quality and creativity of their oeuvre. Each of their projects proposes a sensible reflection on the relation between place, the landscape and man, taking into consideration architectural solutions and innovative techniques that are always bold and relevant to the context in which they are inscribed. To this day, their work has influenced a number of architects and their notoriety is the pride of Québec and Canada. In my humble opinion, it is extremely rare to be able to maintain such a constant level of precision throughout a career, technically and conception wise; a feat they have both together exceptionally accomplished to this day. In this sense, the work of Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte is exemplary and inspirational for our profession, demonstrated by the recognition it has received from their peers throughout their career. I would also like to underline the warm human qualities Gilles and André have demonstrated throughout their lives, their integrity, perseverance and contagious passion for architecture that they have managed to transmit to many. I truly hope this statement, among others, will convince the jury of the pertinence in recognizing what Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte have contributed to our national architecture. Respectfully, Anne Carrier architecte, MOAQ, FIRAC, RCA
