In 2019 we will run GIOHIS for the fourth time. The first three events were notable for high quality attendees, great speakers, controversial and topical subjects and a relaxed atmosphere, with an irreverent look at the sector, a good deal of humour but also hard-hitting discussions and a willingness to tackle genuine sector concerns head-on.

GIOHIS is genuinely different from other hotel investment events:• 40% of the attendees are from

companies which own hotels, far more than from any other category of visitor, so this really feels like a Summit which belongs to owners and to those focused on providing them with top-quality services. This tends to make owners rather more receptive to those experts they meet during the event

• A very high concentration of top executives with 30-40 CEOs and around 20 other “Chief” officers or heads of hotels in larger conglomerates, out of less than 250 attendees

• A focus on selecting speakers based on quality and relevance, not just on sponsorship dollars

• A unique geography, covering the entire Indian Ocean region – from East Africa, through the Gulf to SE Asia and Australia and including the multitude of tourist islands in between

What’s new this year?• A spectacular second night reception

is at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, kindly hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism

• The Summit venue is moving to the luxury Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas on Saadiyat beach

• The second afternoon focuses on “broader hospitality”, with a look at the roles now played by the sharing economy, hotel-branded residences, serviced apartments and timeshare

• We also have a raft of new speakers – 36 at the time of writing – to ensure that you hear fresh ideas and approaches every year

GIOHIS in 2019 –same focus on big, controversial issues – but lots of new features too!

The Summit will take place on 4/5 February 2019 and will cover a wide range of key issues:

• Dealing with the oversupply crunch – slash rates to fill, hold out - or just cut costs?

• Changing investment opportunities as resort and leisure markets mature

• Franchising - is now the time?

• Can the Saudi “tourism revolution” succeed – and who wins and loses if it does?

• Creating a new destination – challenges and lessons to learn – Hard Talk

• Debate: Bigger brands make for richer owners – discuss

• Which deal would you do – the audience pit their wits against some of the region’s most experienced hotel investors

• What is the best hotel investment vehicle?

• The Chinese are coming – what do they want?

• The FF&E Reserve – a necessary evil for owners?

• What is your F&B/meetings sales team up to – and how to benchmark it

• What are the economics of owning lodges?

• As the broader hospitality universe grows to encompass serviced apartments, branded residences, hostels and the sharing economy, does the “hotel sector” still exist?

• Timeshare comes to the UAE – good news or bad news for the sector?

You can see the programme further on in this brochure.

GIOHIS is focused on owners and developers of, and investors in, hospitality real estate, whether developers of new assets and destinations, experienced investors in the acquisition space or newcomers seeking a different property sector in which to expand.

They may include family offices, sovereign funds, REITs and other listed property groups, developers, franchisees, private equity and dedicated hotel investment vehicles. Their assets may range from luxury palaces to new budget concepts and from urban serviced apartments or hostels to remote hideaway resorts.

At the same time, a conference consisting only of the underlying real estate owners would be too one-dimensional. Such investors also want to hear from experts in the sector, whether bankers, consultants, brokers, law firms, architects, project managers, OTAs, branding experts or the main hotel branding and operating companies. Representatives from such groups are more than welcome to attend GIOHIS and are likely to find it a valuable source of contacts.

Even so, we do strive to keep the event balanced. While at least four of the big brands had 50+ delegates at one of last year’s main international conferences, even our highest-level Patron sponsors are limited to single-digit numbers of attendees.

Apart from being balanced in terms of types of delegate, GIOHIS is also very international – over the 2016 - 2018 events, we had attendees from over 30 countries; moreover, around half of all the delegates were from outside the UAE.

Who Should Attend?

“Thisisafreshapproachtohotelinvestmentevents, witharealeffortto have the whole programme based around hotel owners and topics of relevance to them. There should be a good mix of owners, brands and service providers there and, with the low cost of delegate passes, I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in the region, or a desire to meet its leading investors, to attend.”

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the source of much of its oil wealth. It is not only a booming commercial centre, but increasingly a hub for leisure tourism too and has given rise to such major enterprises in the sector as ADIA, Mubadala and Rotana.

Abu Dhabi is easy to access by air, both directly and via nearby Dubai. Our venue at the superb Park Hyatt is close to the Louvre and only around 25 minutes’ drive from Abu Dhabi’s airport. Saadiyat Island has the Emirate’s best beaches which guests of the hotel may enjoy.

The Park Hyatt is also only ten minutes’ drive from downtown, where visitors can find the Corniche, the Abu Dhabi Mall and the Mall at the World Trade Centre

Just a quarter of an hour away is Yas Island, which has become a serious entertainment centre in its own right, benefitting from the Yas Mall (Abu Dhabi’s largest), Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, Yas Links golf course, Warner Brothers World, Yas Beach and Waterworld. It is a remarkable island and one that can provide great extracurricular activities before or after the Summit.

Apart from Yas Island, attractions within Abu Dhabi include the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; the newly-opened, magnificent, Louvre Museum on Saadiyat Island (which also offers the beautiful Saadiyat beach); the famous Abu Dhabi falcon hospital; the Emirates Park Zoo and the Eastern Mangrove Lagoon National Park. A day trip to Dubai with its array of sights is also entirely feasible.

Why Abu Dhabi?

GIOHIS offers many routes for networking with speakers, sponsors and delegates:

1. Two Great Receptions On the evenings of both Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th February, GIOHIS delegates will be treated to fabulous receptions. The first is kindly hosted by Hyatt at the conference hotel.

The second is kindly hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism at the Louvre Abu Dhabi – a unique private invitation to a very special venue. Transport to the Louvre will be provided.

2. Networking breakfast, lunches and coffee breaksWe are aware that most delegates come to network and make contacts rather than simply to listen to the sessions (though we do believe GIOHIS’s sessions will be well worth attending). GIOHIS has two long networking lunches kindly sponsored by Abu Dhabi National Hotels, as well as plenty of tea and coffee breaks; and a networking breakfast on the second morning.

3. Sponsors’ areaThe networking break area also has a dedicated section where you can meet the sponsors, discuss their services and the opportunities they have to offer. There are also plenty of seating areas around the hotel for impromptu chats.

4. Networking onlineThere is a dedicated networking facility within the GIOHIS website, open from mid-January 2019, allowing participants to connect with each other in advance of the summit and make arrangements to meet there.

Networking

“We are aiming to create a new, exciting format with a Summit built around owners and their concerns. Our sessions will be

short, punchy and informative, and we’re delighted already to have

many of the region’s leading CEOs among our speakers, looking at

both inbound and also outbound investment from the region.”

Simon Allison, HOFTEL Chairman

As always, GIOHIS has drawn from a wide range of companies to provide a plethora of expertise from diff erent areas of the hospitality sector. We have speakers from major hotel owners and developers across the region like ADIA, Dubai Properties, Singha Estates and Elanor Investors.

We also have both the main OTAs represented in the form of Booking.com and Expedia; the sharing economy present, with speakers from AirBnB and Maison Privee and, as you’d expect, the major brands with participation from groups like Hyatt, Wyndham and Marriott. We also have branding specialists, lawyers, bankers, brokers and consultants to provide a rounded off ering and advice on almost every aspect of hospitality development and operation.

We try to get the best out of them. This isn’t an event with “no go” areas – but rather with refreshingly open and straightforward discussion.

Of course, we have a large number of speakers from the Gulf, but we also have senior executives fl ying in from as far fi eld as Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kenya, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand and the UK to take part.

You can see details of the speakers, including photos and biographies, at: www.giohis.com/speakers

The programme is of course liable to change slightly as the event approaches.
