Why your help matters:

Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama is committed to providing girls with opportunities to develop the skills they need to succeed not just as a Girl Scout, but as a person, for life. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. To continue our mission, we need your help providing a safe, clean, and nurturing environment for girls to thrive in. GSNCA owns thousands of acres of property with hundreds of structures that need yearly attention and care. From big projects like replacing roofs to small projects like painting mailboxes, we need your help.

How to use the Index:

Under each property heading, you will find 10-20 projects that need to be completed to help maintain a clean, safe environment for campers. Projects range from easy to difficult for all ability levels. Many can be completed in less than 4 hours by a small group of 4-6 people. Some projects may need the guidance of a skilled tradesperson to complete the task. Also some projects may be designated as CRITICAL priority which means that the completion of the project is urgent to prevent loss of use of the building or program area. If you have any questions or need clarification on a project or to get a list of approved paint colors please contact Aimee Canterbury at [email protected].

Project 5: Back Entrance Rehab Scope of the project: The back entrance to camp is the main entrance and needs some TLC. The white wood fence needs to be repainted. Shrubs need trimming and shaping. The flower bed to the right of the gate needs new plants and rebuilt border with stone or pavers. This should be a LANDSCAPE FEATURE, not just a “flowerbed”. Suggested plants include compact size Encore Azaleas, compact Sasanqua camellias as foundation plants and autumn ferns and hostas as border plants. Both suggested evergreen shrubs are evergreen and will provide year-round interest. This is should be easy to complete in a few hours with 4-6 people.

Project 7: OGU cabin/deck rehab Scope of the Project: The OGU unit needs repairs and repainting. The deck needs some small repairs and the entire deck/railing needs repainting and/or sealing. The interior and exterior of the cabin building needs scraping/repainting. This project is perfect for a troop or group of 8+ people to complete as a “weekend campout” project. It should take 10-20 hours depending on the ability of your group and weather, as it affects drying time. This can be split into multiple projects if you have a smaller group (only deck, OR exterior cabins, OR interior cabins). Special Notes:

• This project may require someone with experience in carpentry and operation of power tools depending on the amount of wood that needs replacing.

• Contact a member of the Program and Property Team for approved paint colors.

• All future or additional structures or repairs to existing structures should use composite lumber (not wood).

• All painting projects must be primed and sealed with an appropriate water-based product (Zinzer Bullseye or equivalent or Rustoleum for metal).

Project 9: Repaint Dining Hall Benches and White Wainscoting in the Dining Hall Scope of the Project: The Dining Hall is a place people often congregate and the benches on the porch need some TLC. They are a little wobbly and need painting. They may need some wooden slats replaced and may need additional support added in center to stabilize. Also the white wainscoting at the base of the walls in the Dining Hall need repainting. They are dirty and grimy. The wainscoting has already been primed and painted so a fresh coat of white is all that is needed. This a great project for a small group or younger girls with appropriate supervision. Special Notes:

• This project may require someone with experience in carpentry and operation of power tools depending on the condition of the benches.

• Contact a member of the Program and Property Team for approved paint colors.

• All future or additional structures or repairs to existing structures should use composite lumber (not wood).

• All painting projects must be primed and sealed with an appropriate water-based

product (Zinzer Bullseye or equivalent or Rustoleum for metal).

Project 10: Corky’s Well Scope of Project: Corky’s Well needs some basic maintenance and care. The wooden parts need to be repainted and sealed. The garden benches need to be pressure washed The flower beds/bulbs planted around the well need to be thinned and replanted uniformly. New bulbs/plants may be added to improve the overall appearance and beauty. A landscape border may be built to add visual interest. This prpject should transform Corky’s Well into a LANDSCAPE FEATURE that people want to visit, not just a flowerbed and bench. This project is ideal for a small group or younger girls. Special Notes:

• Contact a member of the Program and Property Team for approved paint colors.

• All painting projects must be primed and sealed with an appropriate water-based product (Zinzer Bullseye or equivalent or Rustoleum for metal).

• Please plants bulbs and plants that can take part to full sun. No shade plants please. If you need assistance choosing appropriate plants please contact a member of the Program and Property Team. We have several experienced gardeners to help you.

Project 11: Welcome Triangle Rehab Scope of Project: The triangle near Memory and Central is focal point for everyone who drives through camp and is central to many program areas. It needs compete rehab to make it beautiful once more. The border needs to be rebuilt with rock and stone on all sides. The wooden sign needs to be repainted or sealed. The triangle needs to be replanted with native species or plants to attract pollinators. Mulch should be added to stabilize the bed and improve overall appearance. This project can be completed with any size or age group in 4-8 hours. Younger girls or smaller groups may require more time. This is the main LANDSCAPE FEATURE at Camp Coleman. It needs to be transformed into a FOCAL POINT with a mixture of evergreen and deciduous species and not seasonal annuals. Special Notes:

• This area receives part sun/dappled shade for most of the growing season so FULL sun plants (8+ hours direct sun a day) nor FULL shade plants will not

thrive/flower here. Appropriate plants include compact evergreen azaleas such as Encore Bonfire, compact hydrangeas, compact Sasanqua camellias, early bloom bulbs such as tulips and daffodils, summer bulbs such as caladiums, and ferns like autumn fern, southern shield fern, or southern wood fern. If you need assistance choosing appropriate plants please contact a member of the Program

and Property Team. We have several experienced gardeners to help you.

• Bird houses, small statuary, stepping stones, etc are welcome. This is a great project to add a “personal touch” from your group.

Project 12: Erosion Control Scope of Project: Several locations on the property need new water diversion culverts. Some area already have culverts or ditches but have become filled with sediment and leaves over time. These existing ditches may need to have rip rap rock removed, the ditch cleaned, and the rip rap rock replaced. Some locations may need brand new ditches with rip rock added. Special Notes:

• This project will require the operation of heavy equipment and machinery. Only someone with specialized training and experience can use such equipment on camp property.

• Contact a member of the Program and Property Team for more information on locations needing attention.

Project 14: Equestrian Center Fence and Gate Painting Scope of the Project: Many of the fences and gates at the barn need to be repainted. Gates may require scraping. Gates will require priming prior to painting. Some fences do not need to be primed prior to painting if appropriate exterior paint product is used. Contact Aimee Canterbury for information on Equestrian Center projects and required materials and paint colors.

Project 15: Playground Fence Scope of Project: The chain link fence needs repair in a few places. A new wood rail fenced needs to be installed and primed/painted to separate the road and the play area. Special Notes:

• This project requires someone with experience in carpentry and operation of power tools.

• Contact a member of the Program and Property Team for approved paint colors.

• All future or additional structures or repairs to existing structures should use composite lumber (not wood) in all areas of contact with the ground.

• All painting projects must be primed and sealed with an appropriate water-based

product (Zinzer Bullseye or equivalent or Rustoleum for metal).
