CHESHIRE PLATE 1988/89
FINAL
ASHTON-ON-MERSEY 1 V
HELSBY CHESTER R.U.F.C.
SUNDAY 16th APRIL 1989 - 3.00 p.m.
Messagefrom Mark Cohen, President of Cheshire Rugby Football Union. Cup and Plate competitions always provide the extra bite to any club's pl ayi ng programme and also always gives us the possibility of finanli sts that have not appeared there on previous occasions.
We therefore congratulate both Ashton on Mersey and Helsby on appearing in this Plate final. It is good for them and Rugby in Cheshire that we shou ld see a good final with both clubs aiming to carry off the Plate Trophy.
The additional interest in thi s year's final is prov ided by Girobank who have not only sponsored this competition but shown so much interest and enthusiasm for Rugby Football throughout the North West.
We must also express our appreciation of the hospitality provided by the Chester Club in allowing us use of their facilities, and also to the Manchester Referee's Society in yet again nominating offi ciai s for this final. And to those numerous members of the County that ensure the success of this competiti on.
Best wishes, ••
Mark Cohen.

Message from Denis Hindle, Regional Manager, Corporate Banking, Girobank pic. Il gives me great pleasure to write a few words of welcome 10 today's Girobank Lancashire Plate Final between Ashton on Mersey and Helsby.
This is the fi rst year that we have backed the Plate evenl , but of course \Ve've becn involved with Rugby Un ion since 1985, when the Girobank North West League pilot scheme's success became the blueprint for the national Courage Club's Championship.
Now \Ve're involved in the cut and thrust county cup competitions across the North W est. Despite the undoubted popularity of leagues, there is still something special about knockout events like these, in which everylh ing depends on how cach (eam cornes 10 tcrms with the pressure of 80 minutes of intense competition.
And of course cup events throw up 50 man y surpri ses and variely. In the Cheshire Cup for example, Jast year's final saw up and coming Winninglon Park tackle Birkenhead Park.
Both \Vent oui of the compet ition thi s year, and inslead Lymm and Mid. Cheshire College will baule il OUi for Ihe county crown later Ihis mon th .
This aftemoon. IWO stalwarts of the Cheshire scene will be attempting ta carry off the Plate after what has been a very keen ly contest cd cvent Ih is year.
Besl wishes la bath teams for what wc hope will be an open, f1 0wing game of rugby.
With best wishes,
Denis Hind le .

Ifs been a mixed season for Helsby . who have donc weil to reach this, their fi rst ever Plate final , but only occupy a mid-table position in West Division Three of the Courage Clubs Championship.
However. the Wirra l club already have a trophy in their cabinet th is season, for early on they beat off the challenge of around a dozen clubs to win the Moore Sevens.
Also cal ier in the season one of Helsby's top players, winger John Will iams, moved 10

This aflemoon, though. Helsby will be looking to scoop the Plate trophy fo r lhe fi rst time in thcir 27 year history.
