PRE-CENSUS MAPPING & HOUSE LISTING
• To ensure complete coverage, the whole country was segregated into 6800 Enumeration Area maps exhaustively.• Every Structure ( Temporary, Permanent, caves, shelters) have been coordinated with GPS (Global Positioning System) system.• Parallel to the Mapping of Enumeration Areas, the house listing for every structure had been accomplished.
GIS for Population & Housing Census 2005• Data capture from the Topographical maps.• Production of Enumeration Area maps both in digital and analogue forms.• Delineation of Enumeration Area boundary through given administrative units and sub-units (Dzongkhag, Geog & chiwog boundary).• To decide the data dissemination administrative level.• To decide the data analysis administrative level for future planners and policy makers.• To set the base reference for future population and Housing census of Bhutan.
Objectives of GIS for PHCB-2005
• Generation of Geo-database for PHCB 2005• To facilitate and widen the scope in the use of census data especially at the smaller area level.• To produce the socio-economic maps using the census data at different categories.• Dissemination of Census data at different level for different user organizations.• Finally to create the bench mark data for the next population and housing census of Bhutan.

GIS PROCESSING
REQUIREMENTS:
• The GIS software used for Population and housing Census 2005 from ESRI products like Arcview or Arc info or Arcgis of latest version.
• The office of the census commissioner had procured the one GIS softwares as it entails huge budget. The market rate for one license Arcgis is about Nu. 1.9 million.
WORK METHODOLOGY• Digitizing of the Topographical maps in different layers of
the available Topographical sheets in 1:50000 • Mosaicing of the same layers to include in the administrative boundary Cropping of the mosaiced layers as per the existing Dzongkhag boundary.• Cropping of digital layers to the geog level in Dzongkhag.• Cropping of Digital layers to the Chiwog level in Geogs.• Creation of Shp.file from GPS coordinates.• Preparation of Enumeration Area Maps digitally.• Merge EA maps into chiwog maps for further processing.• Accordingly merge for geog and Dzongkhag for processing.

Database Design
• At what level the information dissemination had to be done• The information in database to be aggregated• To calculate the statistical factors• How to link the processed data with the map layers.• The SPSS or the CSPRO softwares compatibility should be explored for data linking and matching.• The data dissemination strategy should be planned well.
TRAININGS:• Basic concept of GIS• Basics of GIS operations• Spatial operations in GIS• Statistical operations in line with spatial data• Overlay Analysis• More hands on exercise on analysis with emphasis on Population and Housing census• Preparation of different thematic maps• To extract the population indicators• Preparation of Population Atlases• If possible analysis using the other topographical conditions• Any other exercises
