REPAIRS TO THIN WALL TUBES AND DUCTING — GENERAL
1. Thin Wall Tubes and Ducting
Scope
This document provides inspection standards, rework criteria and rework / repair procedures for thin wallducting fabricated from nickel chromium base, Corrosion Resistant Steel (CRES) and aluminum alloys.
These procedures are for high and low pressure, high and low temperature pneumatic, fuel, vent andcooling ducts in the GIV aircraft.
A. Applicability
The focus of this document is limited to fuel line and duct assemblies containing tubes with a 1.00inch or greater O.D. and a 0.025 - 0.063 inch wall thickness. These duct assemblies are typicallyfound in the air conditioning, fuel, anti-ice, pneumatic and powerplant areas of the aircraft.
The repairs or their related procedures are directed toward the failure and damage conditionscommonly encountered on in-service aircraft. Examples of such in-service conditions are dents, corrosion, scratches, gouges, abrasion, cracks and damaged flanges. The basic repair methods arewelding to fill in areas, corrosion removal and blending, doublers and duct section replacement.
Every assembly should be treated as an individual case. The methods and repair details specified inthis document are structurally and functionally acceptable, however the merits and cost of eachrepair versus assembly replacement rests with the operator. The availability of equipment, qualifiedpersonnel and flight schedules, are variables which enter into the cost of repair versus replacement.Generally, where large amounts of damage can be attributed to extreme pressure, temperature andvibration conditions, the complete replacement of the assembly may be more desirable than therepair or partial replacement and is recommended.
This document lists Gulfstream Aerospace Material Process Specifications (GAMPS) and GulfstreamMaterial Specifications (GMS) which are intended for use when the repair is to be incorporated atGulfstream facilities. Applicable military and commercial specifications for the equivalent processesare provided for repairs and processes performed by other repair facilities and personnel. In manycases, GAMPS have been reproduced in this manual. See Individual Process and Finish Codes,51-20-00, General for GAMPS cross reference. The listed specifications should be reviewed forapplicability prior to beginning the repair.
B. Safety
All appropriate federal, state, local governing body and corporate safety and health regulations shallbe followed during all phases of work. Tables 3 and 4 list appropriate United States Department ofLabor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration codes pertaining to the processes andprocedures defined in this document. Users of this document should interrogate local governingauthorities regarding additional safety and health laws.
C. How To Use This Section
Identify the damaged duct / line and material type. See Applicable GIV Ducts / Tubes, 51-77-01,General.
Clean the damaged areas using the applicable cleaning procedure for the duct / line material. SeeDuct Cleaning and Passivation, 51-77-01, Allowable Damage.
Fully define the extent of the damage by inspecting the damaged areas using applicable inspectionprocedure. See Duct Inspection, 51-77-01, Allowable Damage.
With the damage type and extent fully defined, repair the damage using the applicable repairprocedures and support procedures / information. See Duct Repair, 51-77-01, General, Fusion
