Step-by-stepStep 1: Moisten your bag of soil with few cups of water. Step 2: Set up your Earthbox according to the directionsStep 3: Look at the planting diagram above. Step 4: Look at the size of the container the vegetable transplant is in. Dig a hole a little bit bigger than that. Take the vegetable out of the plastic container and place it in the hole. Make sure the plant is at the same soil level in the new hole as it was in the container. Fill the remaining space around the plant with soil.Patthesoilaroundtheplantfirmlytoeliminateanyairpocketsaroundtheroots. Step 5: Plant your beans: plant seed 1 inch deep, planting a small row of beans with each bean 3” apart. Lightly water.Step 6: Fill the Earthbox water reservoir Step 7: Water regularly.

Location, location, locationMost vegetables grow best with six to eight hours of full sun, with 8 hours being best. Place your garden in a location where it gets at least 6 hours of sun and isn’t very windy.

MaintenanceThe best gardening tool is you. Check your garden everyday. You may not water everyday, but you’ll be checking the soil moisture, monitoring vegetables for harvesting, and on the lookout for any pests or diseases. See Community Resources section if you encounter something you need help with.

H2OCheck the water level frequently to make sure there is always water in the reservoir.Aneasywaytotestisjusttostickyourfingerinthesoil;ifitfeelsmoist, it’s good. Generally, you will water your garden every third day. That does depend on the vegetables you have planted (each has different water needs) and the location you have selected (amount of sun and wind).

My bad!What if everything goes wrong? Between pets, disease and bad weather, sometimes it just doesn’t work out! We like to think you aren’t a real gardener until you’ve killed a plant a time or two. Just try again. Be patient. Often it seems nothing’s happening and then all of a sudden, it looks like broccoli- the greenest most beautiful broccoli you’ve ever seen. And you grew it!

1. Want to extend your growing season? Most vegetables don’t like frosts. InDentonthefirstfrostsgenerallystartmid-November.Ifyouhearafrost warning (freezing temperatures) in the weather report, cover your plants overnight with an old sheet or purchase a frost cloth from a garden center. You can also pull your plants inside or into your garage.

2.There are warm season and cool season crops. Warm season plants prefer the heat and will suffer in a freeze. Most established cool season crops only need protection if there is a hard freeze, or temperatures are below freezing for more than one day. Follow the same steps above for frosts.

Want to plant something new? Look at the Fall and Spring Planting Dates. Remember it takes extra time if you start from seed, or you can buy a vegetable transplant from a garden center.

4.Done for the season? Any water left in your Earthbox could expand as it freezes and crack your EarthBox garden. Earthbox recommends removing the mulch cover, removing old plants and fertilizer, adding a new mulch cover,andtippingtheboxtowardstheoverflowholeonthesidesoitcandrain.

three.What are warm season and cool season crops, you ask? Warm season plants include squash, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and okra. If you’re looking for something to plantwhenit’scool,trybeets,broccoli,onions,turnips,carrots,cauliflower,Brusselssprouts, peas, or spinach.

beansHarvestPick beans when they are about pencil sizeandfirm.Careful, bean stems can be fragile. Keep your plants picked and they’ll keep producing until it gets cold. Green beans are very productive!

StoreYou can refrigerate your green beans in a plastic bag for three or four days.

Oven-Fried Green Beans

Ingredients: For green beans:1 lb green beans, end trimmed1 egg2 tbsp milkItalian seasoned panko (or bread) crumbsCooking spraySea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to tasteFor dipping sauce:2 tbsp mayonnaise2 tsp soy sauce1 clove of garlic, minced

Preparation:For the sauce: Stir all the ingredients together and set aside. For the beans: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Combine the egg and milk together in one bowl and put the panko or bread crumbs in another bowl. Dip a few green beans into the egg mixture then into the crumbs, so they are coated. Put the green beans on a greased baking sheet and repeat until all of the green beans are coated. Spray the green beans with cooking spray then season them up with salt and pepper, to taste. Bake for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately with the dipping sauce.

Submitted by:I probably shouldn’t say it, but green beans are pretty much the only vegetable I like. But I know how to make them a bunch of different ways- so it’s all good! These are my fancy green beans. For everyday, I also like to throw them in a pan with potatoes, carrots, onions, sausage and a little oil and roast them for an easy dinner.

broccoliHarvestHarvest when head is not growing any larger and buds are still dark green and tight (before buds open or color starts to fade or turn yellow). Cut the head off cleanly leaving a stump--most varieties of broccoli will then produce smaller side shoots that can also be harvested. Best if after firstfrost.

StoreKeep your unwashed broccoli in an open plastic bag in the refrigerator. From your garden, it will last up to 10 days.

Steamed Seasoned Broccoli

Ingredients: 1 head of broccoliSalt, pepper, and garlic salt to taste

Preparation:If you are used to cooking with canned vegetables, using a steamer may be unfamiliar to you. Steamed fresh vegetables retain more of their nutrients and taste better

than boiled vegetables. Steaming requires the vegetables to sit above the water in your pan. You can purchase a simple steaming tray at a grocery store for around $5 that willfitintomostpotsandpans(seepicture to left).

Washbroccoliandcutthebroccoliflowersoffofthestalk.Cutthebroccoliflowersintobite-sizepiecesanddiscardthestalk.Placebroccoliflowersinyoursteamertray,andfillyourpanwithabout1”ofwater.Placesteamertrayinyour pan, bring water to a boil, cover the pan, and steam for 12-15 minutes, to desired softness. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and garlic salt to taste.

brussel sproutsHarvestThe sprouts will grow to be 1 inch in diameter. Cut sprouts off stem when theyfeelfirmand are bright green, and before leaves start to yellow, starting with the lower-most sprouts. Also remove a few leaves where the sprouts were. Will taste best if harvested afterfirstfrost. New sprouts will form higher up on the plant stem.

StoreEat fresh Brussels sprouts quickly! They only keep for a few days. Or you can blanch and freeze them.

Oven-Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Ingredients: 1 pound Brussels sprouts2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oilSalt and pepper to taste2 tablespoons grated par-mesan cheese

Preparation:Preheat oven to 400°F. Trim the stem ends of the Brussels sprouts and pull off any yellow outer leaves. Cut each sprout in half, lengthwise, then toss in a large bowl with oil, salt and pepper.

Transfer sprouts to a rimmed baking sheet and roast, stirring once or twice, until deep golden brown, crisp outside and tender inside, 30 to 35 minutes. The leaves that are loose will be especially brown and crispy. Transfer sprouts to a serving bowl, scatter parmesan over the top and serve.

Submitted by:Many people turn up their nose at the idea of eating Brussels sprouts, maybe because they were served bland, bitter boiled sprouts as a child. As a busy working mom with two young kids, this recipe is great because it’s easy to make, quick, nutritious, yummy, and my kids love it! Even if you think you don’t like Brussels sprouts, give this one a try. You might be surprised!

cabbageHarvestPress on cabbage- if itfeelsfirmand it looks full-size, cut the head off at the soil. Like broccoli, often smaller heads will form again- less than half the size ofthefirsthead. When theyfeelfirm,harvest! Will taste best if harvested afterfirstfrost.

StorePut the whole head in a plastic bag in the crisper of your refriger-ator. Cabbage will keep for about 2 weeks. Or cover a partial head with plastic wrap. It will last for a few days refrigerated.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Fresh Cilantro- Cabbage SlawIngredients: For Slaw:1/3 small head of cabbage, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)1 cup fresh cilantro leaves3 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or white vinegar)2 tablespoons olive oil1 teaspoon sugarSalt and pepperFor Pulled Pork:1 whole pork tenderloinJuice of 1 lime¼ cup olive oil1 tablespoon chili powder1 small onion, chopped2 garlic cloves, minced2 teaspoons brown sugarSalt and pepper

Preparation:For Slaw: Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl, toss together and top with black pepper. For Pulled Pork: Combine all ingredients in a plastic Ziploc bag. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours to marinate. Heat the oven to 500º F. Cook the tenderloin on a baking sheet or roasting pan for approximately 45 minutes to an hour (internal temperature should be at 150º). Transfer to a platter and let rest until cooled. Cut pork into thin slices, then shred with two forks. Serve on crusty rolls with the cabbage-cilantro slaw, fresh tomatoes and a little mayo. Add some spicy Sriracha sauce for a kick!

Submitted by:I am not normally a fan of cole slaw, but I love this recipe! It’s a quick, tangy twist on your typical slaw. Add shredded carrots for some extra veggies, and use to top pulled pork sandwiches, tacos made with ground beef or turkey…even salads. It will keep in the fridge for several days. Enjoy!

Preparation:Bake potatoes. (Or to save time, pierce them with a fork and microwave for 6 minutes until tender!) Let them cool and thenpeel.Atthesametime,steamyourcaulifloweruntiltender. Drain it and return it to pot. Next, add chicken broth, milk, and potatoes and bring to a boil. Use a potato masher toblendthepotatoesandcauliflower.Addsourcream,thechives, salt and pepper and cook on low another 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Top with cheese and serve!

I’m a new gardener, too! This year, we grew collard greens, spinach, okra and tomatoes. I’ve never eaten so many greens in my life! After a while, we knew we had to figure out a different way to cook them. I found this recipe and I love it. I actually make it with a little wine in place of some of the chicken broth and serve it with my sister’s famous honey cornbread!

Preparation:Saute your onions and garlic in the olive oil. Add the chicken broth and throw in your greens, tomatoes and thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation Awards $5,000 to Keep Denton Beautiful

Donation to support grant program for local community improvement project Denton, TX – Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) and the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) today announced a major gift in support of KDB’s goal of engaging individuals in local community improvement and environmental projects. The Lowe’s/Keep America Beautiful Community Improvement Grant of $5,000 is one of 120 merit-based grants awarded nationally to support grassroots community improvement projects ranging from community gardens and tree plantings to litter and debris cleanups, recycling programs, park and playground restorations and beautification efforts. This grant will provide funding for the newest KDB initiative, the Garden Giveaway Program (GGP). KDB will select 250 participants on the basis of need to receive a free “garden kit”. The kit will include a self-watering container; soil; 8-10 fruit, vegetable plants and herb plants; a watering can; gardening gloves; a recipe book; and planting instructions. Participants will be educated about the environmental, health and socioeconomic benefits of gardening and provided with the resources to be knowledgeable and successful. “I am proud that KDB is offering a program that will not only continue to ‘green’ our community with gardens, but will also help families and people with lower incomes, as well as college students, to have ready access to nutritious foods. I’m hoping that this may be the start of a new generation of urban gardeners in Denton,” said Lancine Bentley, KDB Board President.
