P&G unveiled two multi-year commitments at the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Forum meeting in New York. P&G also announced successful completion of the three life-saving public health commitments made at the forum previously.

P&G has committed to provide four billion liters of clean drink-ing water in the developing world by 2012. The Company’s Fu-ture Friendly program has committed to place P&G Sustainable Innovation Products in 30 million US homes by the end of 2010.

It takes hard work, passion and dedication to deliver the promise of touching and improving lives. Year after year P&G has delivered on its commitments, not only through its brands but also its community development projects. It is heartwarming to see the efforts of the P&G-READ Foundation partnership generate positive outcomes. The students of the P&G-READ Foundation schools have once again made us proud with their outstanding results in 2008-09. Through hard work, dedication and P&G’s unwavering commitment, these students are steadily building a bright future for themselves.

Our brands remain committed to enriching the lives of consumers this quarter as well, The Safeguard “100 Days 100 Schools” campaign aims to benefit 40,000 school children in Quetta, Karachi and Lahore with the help of improved sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education. The Always “Girls Can” initiative is helping young girls build confidence while encouraging them to realize their true potential.

Success brings with it greater responsibilities and we at P&G strive continuously to deliver our commitments and to prove ourselves worthy of the recognition we have received to date. P&G strengthened its environmental and social sustainability commitments at the recent 2009 Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York. The company also announced successful completion of three life-saving public health commitments at this forum.

P&G Live, Learn and Thrive is a global initiative, operating in more than 60 countries across the world, improving life for children in need. Through this program, P&G makes a difference in the lives of two children every second of every day. P&G Live, Learn and Thrive cause benefited more than 75 million underprivileged children during 2008-09. It gives us great pleasure to announce that the students of P&G-READ Foundation Higher Secondary School at Gojra, Muzaffarabad - one of the largest schools in the area have upheld their tradition of achieving excellent results in board examinations. Mamoona Asghar and Syed Arslan, achieved overall 3rd position in the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Board results in the pre-engineering group and Qurat-ul-Ain stood 3rd in the Computer Science group.

P&G Pakistan together with READ Foundation have established two purpose-built, seismic compliant schools in established two purpose-built, seismic compliant schools in Azad Kashmir, imparting quality education to around 2000 students.

A third school under this partnership was started in rural Islamabad earlier this year. This primary school has begun with an enrollment of 150 children.

P&G strongly believes in safeguarding the health and safety of its employees and workers. The P&G Port Qasim Authority (PQA) plant, presently under construction, achieved a key safety milestone on Oct

26th, 2009 by completing more than 500,000 safe, incident-free construction hours. This has been achieved in a period of straight 12 months since the start of plant construction.

Accomplishment of this milestone reflects the tremendous efforts by the project team to uphold P&G’s safety standards. This project is raising the bar for construction safety standards in Pakistan and P&G efforts in the region. The new

manufacturing site at PQA also reflects world class sustainability practices and incorporates responsible and innovative solutions for maintaining productive and healthy indoor and outdoor work environments.

“Always” Encouraging girls topursue their dreams

This October, Always launched a first of its kind mega TV Show “Always Girls Can” as a part of its mission to encourage confidence-building amongst young girls so that they realize their true potential. Under the theme of “Jo Chahoon Banoon,” the girls compete in a series of challenges throughout the show which tests their mental and physical capabilities, pa-tience, confidence and stress threshold.

At the end of the show, the win-ner will be supported by Always to

achieve her ambitions and aspirations.

The ‘Always Girls Can’ show brings together, on a single platform 16 girls from Karachi but hailing from diverse backgrounds, with different personali-ties and aspirations. The show is hosted by the charismatic and accomplished Marina Khan who is the girls’ mentor and guide during their 13-week journey to self-discovery. From interviewing a celebrity like Vaneeza Ahmed, to paint-ing a worn-down school in Memon Goth, to solving a puzzle by the beach, the girls go through different and exciting challenges which test their individual as well as team-building skills.

Safeguard has joined hands with Save the Children to build sanitation facilities in 100 schools in Pakistan in just 100

days. This health and hygiene project will benefit 40,000 school children in Quetta, Kara-chi and Lahore with improved sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education. and hygiene education.

According to UNICEF Paki-stan, “about 80% of all major diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis

are a result of unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.” According to Hameedullah Jan Afridi, Fed-eral Minister of Environment, “inadequate provision of pure “inadequate provision of pure drinking water and sanitation facilities in schools is one of the

contributing factors to low en-rollment and the high dropout rates of girls from schools.”

In Pakistan every day, 670,000 children miss school due to illness. Many of these illnesses can be prevented through regular hand washing. The Safeguard-Save The Children partnership aims to foster a culture of hygiene amongst children by providing them with critical hand washing and sanitation facilities along with hygiene education.

In this project, every bar of Safeguard bought from October 2009 to March 2010 will contribute towards this cause. Safeguard appeals to Pakistani Safeguard appeals to Pakistani mothers to support the cause and help improve the lives of less

affluent children. The Safeguard “100 schools 100 days” cam-paign was formally launched at a press conference held at Avari Towers, Karachi, on October 20th, 2009.

David Wright, Country Direc-tor Save the Children Pakistan, shared the aims of the campaign during the press conference, “We hope that the partnership between Save the Children and Safeguard will improve the health of thousands of students and enable them to stay in school. P&G brands made a powerful impact at the All about Lifestyles exhibition, held in Karachi recently. The event gave P&G consumers an opportunity to

interact with their favorite P&G brands in an educational and entertaining manner.

Safeguard appealed to the public to join their “100 days 100 schools” mission through a unique ‘100 Second Freeze’. For 100 seconds, 100 Safeguard volunteers “froze” in the

middle of the crowded Exhibition hall. The event highlighted the “Stop, Think and Buy” slogan, encouraging visitors to stop and think about

those segments of society who do not have access to proper hand-washing and toilet facilities. H&S and Pantene hair-check centers provided scalp checks

and general hair care advice. The visitors were also shown Ariel’s superior cleaning abilities through one-wash live demos. The Pampers stall educated mothers on ef-fective baby care tips through expert consultants while fun games for young girls at the Always stall kept the visitors engaged throughout the three-day exhibition.

P&G’s Summer Internship Program has become the key source of future talent for the company ever since its inception. This year’s program included 22 interns from 11 universities across Pakistan. The focus of this program is to provide interns with real life

projects which allow them to get first hand experience of a career at P&G. P&G also provides interns with an opportunity to interact with the wider organization in more informal ways and to learn from their experience.

The Business Management Course that P&G conducted for this year’s interns allowed them to interact directly with P&G employees from each function, as they worked together to solve case studies on P&G brands. A key focus

area of the comprehensive on-boarding program was to ensure that interns went back to their campuses with a broader understanding of P&G, its heritage, principles and the value each function adds to the

business. The internship program reinforces P&G’s commitment to developing human resource in Pakistan as it invests in preparing future leaders by recruiting and developing Pakistani

talent year in and year out.

Health, Beauty & Style WorkshopIn line with its mission to promote the professional progress of women, the P&G Pakistan Diversity Network held a Health, Beauty and Style Workshop on December 14th for female employees. The aim of this workshop was to fuel the engagement of women employees within the workplace through presentations and discussions on topics of health, nutrition, personal care and wellness. Expert guest speakers from the health and beauty sector were invited to share their knowledge and advice on these important topics.

The session began with Dr. Sadia Masood, well-known Consultant Dermatologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, who spoke to the audience on ‘Beauty is Skin Deep’. The presentation covered informa-tion on basic skin problems, it’s solutions and how one can prevent common skin disorders by observing basic nail, skin and hair care tips.

This was followed by guest speaker Vajeeha Azeem, a Clinical Dietician at the Aga Khan University Hospital, who gave valuable advice on maintaining a ‘Healthy Diet and Healthy Life’. Her presentation entitled ‘You are what you eat’, captured details on healthy eating habits which one must inculcate in everyday life as well as effective energy management tips.

In the end, Sonya Battla, one of Pakistan’s leading fashion designers, engaged the au-dience through an interesting and interac-tive session on ‘Style for Working Women’. She talked about the dos and don’ts of fashion tailored to the needs of women in the corporate world.

The sessions were very well received by the audience. By organizing the Health, Beauty and Style Workshop, P&G has taken another important step towards nurturing female diversity at the workplace.
