GIVING FRIENDS A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE

There is a place in your community that serves the most vulnerable among us…abandoned and stray companion animals. Where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, the injured and

sick are given care, all receive a second chance at happiness. That place is MaxFund, Denver’s non profit, only true no-kill shelter serving both dogs and cats. Since 1988, we’ve saved over 30,533 dogs and cats. We could not have done so without the support of our community.

Everyday, MaxFund takes in dogs and cats because their families could no longer care for them, their guardians lost their home, the loss of a job has forced relocation, or because the cost of medical care was beyond the reach of an already tight budget.

MaxFund provides a safe haven for these animals, many of whom are older or infirm and would have been euthanized by other shelters for being “unadoptable.” MaxFund has proven time and time again that there is a loving home for every dog and cat. They just need time…time that they wouldn’t have at other shelters.

If you’re interested in hearing more about MaxFund, adopting a pet, or making donations, please go to www.maxfund.org and get your warm fuzzies!

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

BIG NEWS! It’s the “dog days of summer.” I had Mom look that up and it is from the beginning of July until mid August. It really has to do with a dog star. Can you believe there is a dog star named Sirius? See we are important. Do you have a star?

Little brother, Bandit, can at times get scared by spooky everyday things. He doesn’t like it when the vacuum is on, and he doesn’t like brooms. He does like the sprinklers, and comes in wet. That is not a favorite thing for Dad and Mom. The other thing we have learned to do is howl when Dad and Mom leave. Mom thought at first we were coyotes, but she caught us this morning and said to quit our singing. Guess we hit the wrong notes.

Bandit upsets Mom if he chases the birds, squirrels, and rabbits in the backyard. However, there is feud going on with Bandit and a magpie. The magpie comes to the tree in the backyard and screams as loud as he can and then tries to land, screams his head off in angry protest and then pretends to fly away. Then he will try to approach us dogs at another angle. Bandit will be on the lookout before the bird can even get a foot down. The magpie is clever but no match for Bandit. Bandit is not going to let him do that, so the race is on. He flies away. A few minutes later while Bandit is on the side where he flew away, he comes around the house to the other side and lands in the backyard. Bandit sees and chases him away again. Sometimes this goes on for more than 15 minutes back and forth, until the Magpie flies away. The next day, he comes again, and the game continues...

Meanwhile, as Bandit continues to stretch his limitations, I just stretch out and snooze. It is just too hot to go chasing around. Don’t you agree?

Hi All,

Yes, I made it back home without being eaten. We spent 5 days at a place called Yellowstone National Park and stayed in Fishing Bridge Campground inside the park. There is always a possibility of bears going through the campground, but I never saw any. I think it would have been neat to see a bear from the safety of the RV.

As we drove into the park, I got to see waterfalls right by the road and some buffalo. Even from the road buffalo are really, really big. Later in the week, Mom and Dad were able to park near a herd of buffalo moms, dads and babies. They got great photos because the herd decided to walk over and around where they were parked. The babies were fun to watch as they played with each other and bounced stiff legged all over the place. Mom said she even learned two new words — stotting and pronking. It means springing into the air with stiff legs close together and with your head down which is what the babies were doing. Then at Mammoth Hot Springs they also saw elk and a nest of baby owls.

The marina at Yellowstone Lake offers a guided boat tour of the lake, surrounding shoreline and buildings. Mom said it was really informative but that the lake had potholes. She was only kidding, what she meant was that there were whitecaps on the lake and when the boat got up to speed it would slam down onto the water.

Sometimes I think it would be interesting to be a 2 legger so I would be able to see some of these interesting sites. However, it is nice to lay on my bed with the sun shining in and just relax. I think I will let them do all the walking, and I will just dream about it.

BHUTAN CARRIED OUT A NATIONWIDE PROGRAM TO SPAY AND NEUTER ITS STRAY DOGSBy Carol Hills; KOSU 91.7 OKC //107.5 Tulsa

Bhutan is a small Buddhist kingdom tucked in the Himalayas and known best for its Gross National Happiness index. Among tourists, it’s also known for

its huge stray dog population.

“You notice it as soon as you get off the plane,” says Twig Mowatt, an animal rights activist and editor of Bark Magazine. “They’re along the highways. They’re in front of every business, in front of the gas station, the police station, hanging out by people’s houses. You’re stepping over them on the sidewalks. They’re everywhere.”

But the stray dogs are precisely the reason Mowatt traveled to Bhutan. “Bhutanese people, who are largely Buddhist, believe that sentient beings should be cared for.” And the Bhutanese do care for them though not in their homes.

“They’re really community dogs. There isn’t a lot of individual pet ownership the way we in the US would think of it,” says Mowatt. “But there are dogs that are loyal to a certain territory. There might be seven or eight that live on a certain block and then the people who live in that area feed the dog. So they do care for the dogs. They don’t want to hurt them. They believe that would be bad karma for them.”

But by the mid-2000s, the stray dog population was getting out of control. Illegal meat markets were leaving scraps that attracted packs of dogs. Tourists, who are required to spend a minimum of $250 a day to be in the country, were finding them menacing.

“The population of dogs was growing and Bhutan was getting a lot of complaints about barking dogs at night that were keeping the tourists up,” says Mowatt. In 2008, Bhutan wanted to clean up the streets in advance of the coronation of a new king, so they reached out to Humane Society International for help. “Bhutan had the idea that they wanted to put the dogs into big government pounds and just keep them sheltered that way,” says Mowatt. Humane Society International told Bhutan it was bad idea. But Bhutan went ahead. Thousands of dogs died. And Mowatt says the Bhutanese learned something else: No dogs leads to more rats.

“If you take away the dog population — they’re very much a part of the ecosystem there — you’re really messing with mother nature,” Mowatt says. “So the rats had moved in to replace the dog void and they were just inundated with rats.”But Humane Society International persisted and suggested that Bhutan try something that was unprecedented: A nationwide spay/neuter and vaccine program.

“They said, ‘Look, we know this is the only thing that will work. We know it’s going to take a little time but in the long run this is the only effective solution.’” And the government agreed. Humane Society International initiated the Catch-Neuter- Vaccinate-Release method. Dogs are released later the same day in the same location where they were captured. When the program started in 2009, Humane Society International estimated there were about 100,000 stray dogs in Bhutan, largely in the cities. Mowatt says it took a while to get things up and running. “First, they didn’t have enough vets so Indian members of Humane Society International sent in a vet team.” Then they started creating a Bhutanese team, training vets, vet techs, even dog catchers.

“They use nets, which is very humane but it’s not easy. These guys are real escape artists. They’re biggish dogs. They’re super smart. They work together.” The method of spaying and neutering they use is less invasive than the approach used in the United States. Mowatt says they’re more like MASH units. “The vets know how to make a tiny little incision and when the incision is small, everything else is easier and faster.” That makes recovery time faster. They make a tiny incision and go in. “I liken it to a crochet hook. And they just grab the stuff. They can do a spay in under ten minutes and a neuter in under five. It’s like watching an artist.” The stitches that are left are inside the dog so there’s nothing to scratch, making the chance of post-surgical infection minimal.

Seven years on, the program has spayed or neutered and given rabies vaccine to 71,000 dogs in Bhutan. Twig Mowatt says there’s a tell-tale sign. “The way you can recognize a dog that’s been spayed or neutered is they take a little triangular notch out of its left ear,” she says. “And I have to say, everywhere I went, I would hike up to some monastery in the hills or trekking along the rice paddies and every single dog I saw had this triangular notch.”

The spay and neuter program is ongoing and is now entirely run by the Bhutanese people, which was always the goal.Mowatt says Bhutan could be a model for other countries but it takes government buy-in. “The fact that the government was fully on board was crucial, because it enabled Humane Society International to go in and do this complete program,” she says. And they’re not done yet.

“They’re going to continue checking and following up, because the real shift in the size of the population of dogs isn’t going to be noticeable for probably another five or six years,” Mowatt continues. “The adult dogs who have been spayed or neutered are going to start dying of natural deaths. And at that point, they’ll have all these statistics in place to show how effective this has been.”

Pawnote: This article was sent to us by Ben Mares who is a MaxFund supporter. He helps fund the spay/neuter program there. We are bringing one of the dogs to MaxFund later this year.

SUBJECT: Ruff Rider Cycle Event and Block Party

We are inviting you and your business to please support our 1st Annual Ruff Rider event, August 27, 2016. The proceeds from the Ruff Rider cycle event will benefit MaxFund, a 501 c3 non profit organization, and the many dogs and cats we take in, make well, and adopt out to lucky families.

The Ruff Rider is designed to be a motorcycle ride between MaxFund and a route out to the Stagecoach in Franktown, then back to MaxFund, ending up back at the MaxFund facilities. Following the ride, we have planned a block party where the bikers and public will enjoy food, live music, beer and games. We are expecting close to 1,000 people; a great day for MaxFund and also a tremendous marketing tool for your business.

That’s where your organization comes in. To be part of making the Ruff Rider event spectacular, you can participate by providing donations, door prizes, and publicity for the event. You’re all welcome to sign up to ride as well. We plan to have posters and advertisements, (radio and television) and we would like your organization to help get the word out as well. Depending on your level of sponsorship we can add your business onto our flyers/ads.

MEET THESE MAXFUND DOGSBy Ilene Johnson

COOPER

Check out this handsome guy!Cooper is a Foxhound mix who was born in 2008. This good-looking boy adores every person that he meets, young, old, and in-between. He is also a first-class snuggler, which is a very important talent. Cooper loves to spend time outside, whether it be taking a nice walk, or just relaxing in the grass and smelling all of the wonderful smells and fresh air.

This charming guy is looking for his forever home. Cooper should be the only fur baby in his home, but not to worry, he promises to provide you with lots of love and plenty of entertainment.

Please come and meet Cooper. He is waiting to show you that he can be your new and very best friend. And how snuggly he is!

AURORA

Do you believe in love at first sight? One look at this beautiful girl with her trusting brown eyes, and you will believe in love at first sight!

Aurora is a Shepherd/Chow mix who was born in 2014. Her name is so appropriate; Aurora was a Roman goddess, the Goddess of Dawn, as well as the name of a princess. This princess (and she is a beautiful princess) awakens all sorts of wonderful feelings.

Aurora is a very gentle soul who exudes sweetness. She can be a bit shy when you first meet her, but quickly becomes your friend, and gives wonderful kisses. Aurora loves to go on walks, and is definitely one of the easiest dogs to walk ever. She does well with other dogs, but would like to meet any potential fur-siblings you may already have. She may also do best with older children.

Aurora takes seizure medication three times each day, and does very well on it. She is a very mellow girl. She was previously crate-trained, and she is also housebroken.

This wonderful, beautiful, lovable princess of a girl is waiting to meet you, and to awaken your love. You too will believe in love at first sight when you meet Aurora!

LOUIE

Louie is a handsome Lab/Greyhound mix who was born in 2008. Louie is a youthful eight year old, who has lots of energy, and who is very playful. He enjoys outdoor activities, and can keep up with anyone! He loves to play fetch (and can play for hours on end), and to swim (he could probably compete in the Olympics). Whatever he does, he gives it his all. This athletic guy can also jump fences under 5 feet, so he would do best in a home with a tall fence, or with someone who can take him for leashed potty breaks.

One of the many other fabulous things about Louie is that he loves people, all shapes and sizes, and he adores getting love and attention from his human companions. Louie can be a bit choosey about his dog friends, so a meet and greet with any potential fur siblings will be needed. However, Louie previously lived with another dog and a cat, and enjoyed being with both of them.

Louie is also a very smart guy, and knows all of his basic commands. He even went through a 30 day training program when he was a youngster. He is attentive (not to mention food motivated), so would love to continue his higher education with you. And, you can watch Louie in action in the video on MaxFund’s website, located under his bio, and can see how handsome and energetic he is.

Louie is in search of his forever home, so if you are looking for a dashing, loving, sweet, energetic, fun, smart boy, no need to look any further! Please do come and meet Louie.
