  • *1. Why is it important for Ts to give clear instructions?Discussion Questions!2. Why is it important to give instructions in English?3- Should a teacher give instructions in Khmer?

  • *1- It is important for Ts to give clear instructions because Ss need to understand what to do.Possible Answers2- It is important to be in English because this gives Ss regular practice in hearing and understanding English.3- A T should always try to give instructions in English. However, if some Ss do not understand, the T can use English to ask one of the better Ss to repeat the instruction in Khmer.

  • *How can you give your clear instruction to students?

  • *2- Use simple language and short expressions3- Be consistent4- Use visual or written clues5- Break the instruction down 6- Target your instruction7- Be decisive1- Draw the students attention.

  • *Draw the students attention.Make sure everyone is listening and watching.Dont give out any handouts, which may distract the students attention before you need to.

  • *Use simple language & short Expressions.Use language at lower level than the language being taught .Short instructions are entirely appropriate to this situation where the Ss accept your authority.

  • *Be consistent.Use the same set of words for the same instruction.Common instructions are: Everybody, All together, Again, Try again, Look ( at the picture), Listen, Repeat, Tell me, Stand up, Turn to pageWith beginners, spend time teaching them the language they need to follow instructions.

  • *Use visual or Written clues.Support instruction with visual clues wherever possible: Real objects, Picture, gesture & mime.To give instructions written on cards or piece of paper that you have prepared.

  • *Break the instruction down.Give simple instructions in segments or parts and check understanding.Give only some of the instructions & allow time for them to carry out before moving on to the next step.

  • Target your instruction If instructions do not concern all students. Spend a bit more time giving instructions to who you should give.*

  • *Be Decisive.Use a signal, like the word Right or Listen.For example: 1-Say something like Everyone Start ! perhaps accompany by a downward hand gesture or a clap of your hands.2- T. shop assistants, hands up.Now customers, hands up.
