ForewordWelcome to UnderCover the GL events UKnewsletter, our chance to update you on theevents that have seen our team perform on aglobal stage over the past year.

GL named GlobalOverlay Partner forFormula E As the official Global Overlay Partner to the new all-electric FIA Formula E Championship, we supply the entire eventinfrastructure for the FIA backed single-seater championship, whichsaw its first race in Beijing back in September.

2014 was quite a year seeing GL eventsUK being involved with major sportingevents in the UK and across the world.

From the flexible and innovative solutionsneeded for the FIA Formula E Grand Prixseries to the sheer scale of the structuresrequired for the Glasgow 2014Commonwealth Games, GL events hasproved to be a gold medallist in its field.

We would like to thank all our loyal and valuedclients, suppliers and ofcourse our staff and theirfamilies for all theirsupport in 2014.

For the inaugural season, ten rounds willtake place across the globe during 014/15,each taking place in the heart of theworld's leading cities, racing on streetcircuits around iconic landmarks.

Each location requires a bespokeinfrastructure including the integral pitstructure, adapting the offering to therequirements of the circuit and the city.

At 5.9km (3.7miles) long, the Sochi circuitis the third-longest circuit on the F1calendar, behind Spa-Francorchamps inBelgium and Silverstone in Great Britain.The circuit was built around the SochiOlympic Park coastal region for thecountry’s first F1 Grand Prix in more than a century.

The constructors purchased five raisedgrandstands offering 30,000 seats,

positioned at key turns within the circuitincluding the first corner, which has thebiggest battle as drivers push for that earlylead and the Russian GP was no different.

Chris Mansell, Operations Director for GL events Seating & Stadia, said: “Thegrandstands were positioned at turnstwo, four, five and six, all with fantasticsight lines of the track so spectatorsdidn’t miss any of the action.” ///

Seated at SochiThe first Russian Grand Prix for more than a century saw our Seatingand Stadia division installing grandstands along the Sochi circuit toensure spectators had the perfect view of all the action.

Three main areas were built for Silverstoneitself – Stowe, Silverstone Six and ClubSilverstone, offering hospitality suites andrestaurants named after famous racingdrivers, a VIP club and the Driver’s Loungeas well as kitchen and staff areas.

The team created the Farm Lawn andmember’s Clubhouse for The BritishRacing Drivers Club (BRDC). After thesuccess of last year’s double deckstructure, the BRDC added a panoramicviewing balcony to ensure its membersdidn’t miss any of the weekend’s action.

For those who flew into the circuit, GL events Owen Brown created helicopterterminals, which offered luxury landingfacilities. There were also public bars,which were a mix of shapes and sizes,from a larger structure servicing theconcertgoers to small ‘pop-up’ bars dotted around the circuit.

GL events Owen Brown partnered withSnoozebox to create its portable hotelaccommodation, which was also used tohouse the team during the building andbreak-down period. This provided an idealsolution for GL events, one that they hopeto replicate in the future. ///

Pole position at the British GP It was ‘pole position’ for GL events at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, creating over 17,000sqm oftemporary structures at Silverstone. The team built 64 structures for the three-day event, working onsite for eleven weeks for a number of clients.

Golf

Off to a good start on the FirstGL events Owen Brown found itself in good company as it shared in Team Europe’s success at the RyderCup at the Gleneagles Golf Resort, Scotland. Taking over two months to build, the trio of state of the artsingle, double and triple-deck structures at the first hole provided stunning hospitality facilities offeringguests superb views of PGA’s Centenary Course.

GL events Owen Brown set the tone forwhat was to become an unforgettableweekend for all those in attendance. VIPsand guests at the Argyll Pavilion tookadvantage of the sunny conditions and thespacious balconies to make sure theydidn’t miss a minute of the action as thetwo rival teams teed off.

Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup Match Director,commented: “We were delighted to workwith GL events Owen Brown again atthis their second Ryder Cup. Theydelivered exceptionally well and theirmulti deck Absolute structures and level

of finish looked superb. The Ryder Cupatmosphere is second to none especiallyon the first hole and the trio ofhospitality structures installed by GLevents Owen Brown flanking the firstfairway only added to this.

The tournament that was attended byover 200,000 sporting enthusiasts; a farcry from when Watson made his RyderCup debut in 1977 when there weren'teven any grandstands and the smallnumber of spectators could easily becontained by a simple gallery rope. ///

The extended tiered seating using Seatingand Stadia’s innovative C View+ seatingsystem, was laid out in an Amphitheatrestyle, wrapping around key areas such asthe first tee and the 18th green, wheregolfing legends such as Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson played during theseven-day tournament.

The horseshoe grandstand on the 18th, the first of its kind in the history of The Open, was embellished with thefamous ‘Claret Jug’, the OpenChampionship emblem and one of themost iconic trophies in all of sport.

Chris Mansell, GL events Seating andStadia Operations Director, said:

“This was our second year working withThe Open Championship and already therequirements have evolved. This year’sseating increased by around 3,500 andthe new disabled viewing areas wereintegral parts of the grandstands. Theseating, not only the capacity but alsothe comfort it provides, added to thevisitor experience, and this will onlyincrease as we continue to work with theorganisers to develop our offering.” ///

Sitting comfortably at The Open ChampionshipMore golfing fans watched the 2014 Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, incomfort with the spectator seating provided by GL events Seating and Stadia increasing to over 20,000seats. In addition, disabled seating areas on raised platforms were provided within four of the stands,ensuring that the event was fully accessible to all.

Situated in Leeds on the Wellington Placedevelopment, the 5,400sqm state-of-the-art facility housed reporters,photographers and cameramen from all over the world as well as over 800branded race vehicles used during theroad cycling race.

GL events Snowdens had just five-days tobuild the various structures and marqueesthat were used through the event with

the site itself proving to be the biggestchallenge.

“The site at Wellington Place was partcar park, part waste ground so the first issue was to solve thediffering status of the location as themarquees were all on differing levels,”explains Keith Bishop, Director of GL events Snowdens. ///

General Sports

It’s all just CricketGL events Seating & Stadia provided over 2,000 seats within anopen-top stand to Kent County Cricket Club’s nursery ground inBeckenham, South East London.

The seating stand is fitted with toilets andstorage space in the underlying concourseand is just one of the elements that willdramatically enhance the cricket facilitiesat the Beckenham Ground, and will include

an indoor cricket school to be built to ECBAcademy standards, as well as a newspectator stand for 2,000 that will increaseground capacity. ///

Pedalling the Tour De FranceOur marquee division GL events Snowdens, based in Peterborough created a media hub that hosted over 2,000journalists in Yorkshire for the ‘Le Grand Depart’ of this year’s Tour de France, which was broadcast to 190countries by 85 TV channels ensuring a worldwide audience of three billion.

Jamie Clifford, the Club’sChief Executive Officer, said:

“It is very exciting that thislong talked about project isnow moving ahead, and it iswonderful to think that theClub has such a magnificentfacility from which to runCricket, at every level, in thenorth of the County.”

“This was a fascinatingproject to work on given theratio of the space availablefor the build and the numberof reporters it needed tohouse. The end result was afantastic studio facility thatgave viewers a great insightinto the action.”7

Best Games EverAs Official Overlay andTemporary Structures Providerfor the Glasgow 2014Commonwealth Games, GL events Field & Lawn Limitedcreated over 33,000 squaremetres of space created at sevenGames venues including theEmirates Arena and adjoining Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome,Tollcross International SwimmingCentre and a temporary squashshowcourt at Scotstoun SportsCampus, complete with a 2,400seater grandstand.

This included responsibility for thePolyclinic enclosure in the Athletes’ Village,operating 24 hours a day and providingmedical services from emergency dentalcare to physiotherapy and sports massageservices to athletes and team officialsthroughout the Games.

The temporary structures were provided to supplement the existingGlasgow 2014 venues and were essentialto the delivery of a safe, enjoyable andwell-organised Games.

GL events Field & Lawn also created atemporary outdoor broadcast suite for theregional reporters covering the Glasgow2014 Commonwealth Games. Built arounda modular system, the three storey mediacentre that fused six hi-cube corrugatedsteel modules together, offered around60sqm of floor space on each floor.

The modules were fabricated to a bespoke design to suit the very specificrequirements of Network News and thestaff of Nations and Regions, incorporatinga huge glazed front façade so reportersgot the best views of some of Glasgow’siconic landmarks. ///

The development at the home of theHornets centred around the old East Standthat was shut down on safety grounds,with the players changing facilities andassociated amenities contained beneaththe stand remaining fully operationalthroughout the season.

The new stand, named after Sir Elton John,was designed and programmedsympathetically, with the aim of delivering

part of the new facility before the end ofthis season to ensure that the Club couldaccess much needed additional capacity.To make the development as time andcost efficient as possible, the design teamutilised the existing topography and someof the original access infrastructure todeliver the new stand. This effectivelymeant that safe egress can been achievedusing a combination of the reinstatementof some existing turnstile blocks,

supplemented by a system of newstaircases and vomitories to complementthese entrance points.

The new stand’s design has been future-proofed to enable additional facilities to beadded as required. The stand provides2600 additional seats, with the possibilityof adding approximately 500 more seatsthrough extending the length of thestructure at one end. ///

This year’s Hay Festival was the biggest ever, notjust in terms of big names and the huge number ofvisitors from around the UK, but also in the sizeand stature of the infrastructure provided by GL events Snowdens.

GL events Snowdens created over 18,000 sqm of space for theten-day literary event including eight performance venuesshowcasing great writing from poets and scientists, lyricists andcomedians, novelists and environmentalists. ///

Kick off at Watford FCGL events Seating and Stadia has transformed the East Stand atWatford Football Club, providing home supporters with 2,600 newseats at Vicarage Road Stadium.

Biggest ever Hay Festival

Keith Bishop, Director of GLevents Snowdens, said:

“This is one of the UKGroup’s biggest project and quite unique in utilizingalmost every type of productwe have to offer in alldifferent sizes. It's a real mix.We had everything from 30ft pole marquees to softand hard sided structuresranging from 3m to 30mwide. Add to that over 700linear metres of walkwaysthroughout the site to link all the structures together.”

Structures and seating were delivered toEdgbaston’s Aegon Classic, the seasonopener for leading players in women’stennis on grass, and Eastbourne’s AegonInternational, which attracts some of theworld’s top male and female tennis playersmaking their final preparations beforeWimbledon.

For the Aegon Classic, a range ofstructures were used for the corporate andplayer hospitality as well as spectators’catering and various retail outlets andSeating and Stadia provided a temporaryseating stand.

Meanwhile for the Aegon International, GLevents is responsible for the marqueesused for trade stands and informationpoints around the venue. A newtemporary seating stand was installed aswell as 3000 of the permanent seatsreplaced.

Gavin Fletcher, Aegon TournamentDirector, said: “Having worked with theirUK group structure divisions OwenBrown and Snowdens for many years, Iam confident in their ability to supply uswith quality equipment to complimentour offer in providing the bestvisitor/spectator experience possible. Iam looking forward to continuing thisrelationship over the next four years.'' ///

AnyoneforTennis?GL events won a new four-yearcontract with the Lawn TennisAssociation (LTA) to supplyequipment from the OwenBrown structure division, Seating and Stadia, its tieredseating division, and its marquee division Snowdens.

12Steve Shaw, Sales Directorfor Seating and Stadia, said:

“Eastbourne was a morecomplex installation thanmost, the temporary seatingstand needed to fitseamlessly with thepermanent seating theyalready had at this venue. All the steps and aisles lined-up to create a seamlesstransition between thetemporary and thepermanent seating. The new stand was built over an existing walkway and permanent buildings so all the structural loadsneeded to be put throughthe existing building.”

The marquees were positioned on the upperpromenade opposite the Burlington Hotel, next to theCarpet Gardens. The retailers were given the site freeof charge to ensure they could continue tradingdespite the pier closure through the rest of the year. ///

GL eventsSnowdens aidsPier blaze victimsWhen the iconic Eastbourne Pier went up inflames, the Borough Council called in GL eventsto set up temporary shops for traders who had tomove off the pier due to the fire.

The official temporary structure supplier tothe world renowned auction house, OwenBrown created the 1,600sqm showroom atBeaulieu Autojumble with soft sides, withsome clear panoramic windows to ensurethose enthusiasts without a cataloguecould still get a sense of the atmosphere.

As well as hosting the auctioneer’s rostrumand seating area, the structure alsoshowcased some of the key lots with thecars driven into the building for staticdisplay once the event was underway. ///

Hammertime forBonhamsA rare Jaguar E-Type Roadsterbarn find, an abandoned AstonMartin DB3, a Maserati Tiporacer, and a £1.5million Lagondawere just a few of the stunningclassic cars that graced thepurpose built showroomscreated by GL events OwenBrown for Bonhams’ sales atBeaulieu and Goodwood Revival.

14 A sell-out crowd of 140,000 attended the three-day show to join celebrationsmarking the Red Arrows' 50th display season at the world's largest military airshow.

GL events Owen Brown installed over 6,000sqm of temporary structures, including27 Smart System chalets used by exhibitors such as watch manufacturer Breitling,and a range of five star hospitality areas into the RAF base.

GL events Seating and Stadia created over 4,000 seats across three grandstands inthe Viewing Village which was first introduced in 2013, and expanded due to itspopularity. Using the C-View system, the grandstands gave visitors in the privateenclosure the option of an elevated view of the displays. ///

Flying High at RIATGL events UK was flying high after supplying temporarystructures and tiered seating for this year’s Royal International AirTattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford.

New facesGL events UK has added a fewnew members to its team:

Toby Bennett has beenworking with temporarystructures since 2005,starting out as a SalesManager at De Boer,working on event projectsas well as commercial/longterm applications over a five-year period, before

returning for a second stint in 2012. Toby isresponsible for Business Development.

Claire Flinn joins GL eventsas Marketing Manager withover 15 years of marketingexperience, workingpredominantly in the ITand telecoms networkingindustry.

Katie Holifield Beforejoining GL events inAugust 2014, Katie spent 5 years at ChesterRacecourse and 5 years atSilverstone Circuit asHospitality Managerresponsible for theorganisation and delivery

of a variety of events. Katie co-ordinatesmanaging the delivery of hospitality andinternal fit out at each Formula E race, tomeet and exceed client expectations.

Paul Moreton joins as Account Manager at GLevents Snowdens. He has been in the eventindustry for 14 years working within everyelement from contractor to venuemanagement, organiser and owner. Paul wasinvolved in major events such as London 2012and the Commonwealth Games Manchester.
