Dear Parishioners,

Before we know it the time will be here on June 2,3, 4 for our annual GreekFest to kickoff the festival season in WNY.

Buffalo GreekFest is truly a heritage festival which has promoted the Greek culture andreligion to Western New York for over 40 years. Our authentic Greek dancers, livebands, cultural displays, church tours, variety of shops, good food and many other events have made it one of the nation’s topGreek Festivals.

I want to thank all our volunteers who through their hard work and dedication throughout the years have made this festival a suc-cess and something our whole community is proud of. With the help of all our volunteers, our mission is to not only continue thisgreat event which is a major fundraiser for our church, but to make it better than ever and to assure that all our guests will enjoytheir visit and leave with a pleasant and unforgettable experience.

We need everyone’s help to make our festival even stronger and to keep the tradition going forward for many years to come. Weowe this to our church and to all those before us who worked so hard to make it what it is today.

I would like to ask and invite those who have not been volunteering in the past to do their part and help in order to make it easierfor those who spend endless hours year after year.

Call our church office and offer to volunteer!! Your continued work and support is very much appreciated!!

I would like to thank Karoline Faltas and Mr. Jerry Candiliotis for accepting the position as Festival co-chairs.

Thank You!! To Mrs. Nina Krestos who has accepted to chair this year’s Sweepstakes. Festival Sweepstakes will be held on Thurs-day May 25th at 7:00PM. Tickets are $150 each. GOYANatalie Marinides

As my senior year comes to a close, I’ve already begun to reminisce on my days here in Buffalo. I get nostalgic when I think aboutall the memories I’ve made, especially through GOYA. It feels like just yesterday I was a shy freshman who was reluctant to go to aGOYA basketball tournament, and now I’ve just played in my last. Beforemy first tournament, I never really felt like I belonged with other kids atchurch. My reserved personality couldn’t match the loud enthusiasm ofthe kids I was surrounded by. After Fr. Perry convinced me to go to the De-troit tournament, this all changed. I became more comfortable with theother kids and began to develop new friendships. Through my participationin GOYA, I’ve built some of my closest friendships. Whether it’s going onweekend trips, spending a week together at St. Timothy’s Camp, or just see-ing each other every Sunday, even if it’s only a few hours- I cherish the mo-ments I spend with my GOYA friends. Our last trip to Dayton andCincinnati was bittersweet. It was my favorite GOYA trip I’ve been on sofar, but I couldn’t help but think, “In 6 months, I won’t be seeing thesepeople every Sunday anymore.” My participation in GOYA has had a stronginfluence on my life, and I will always treasure the friendships I’ve made.

ORTHODOX ACTIONMaria Papafagos

“Share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless and poor into your house.” Isaiah 58:7

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

As some of you may or may not be aware, I have been graciously asked to become the new Coordinatorof Orthodox Action Ministries. First and foremost, I would like to thank Mary Danakas for her 10 years ofwonderful service. Mary, along with the guidance of Fr. Christos, initiated this much needed organization

to the underserved in our community. Her dedication and passion to Orthodox Action proved to be integral in its success. Mary hasdecided to utilize her many talents in other areas of our Church’s ministries. There is no doubt she will bring her experience and loveof our church to the forefront. We wish her much success in her new endeavors.

As Lent is upon us, I pray that it may bring us all closer to our Lord, Jesus Christ. There are many ways to try to accomplish thiswith fasting, praying more, attending church services, receiving the Sacraments and doing good works. This leads me to my personalrequest. If you have volunteered at the soup kitchen in the past, then you know what it is about and the humbling experience it offersus. If you haven’t, I suggest you try us out! Bring a friend, a neighbor, a coworker and join us for a few hours. It’s a fulfilling, gratifyingway to serve our community and to do Gods work. It provides fellowship among our parishioners and allows us to get better acquaintedwith people we haven’t had the opportunity to get to know, or even meet. I have often said that some of the guest we serve may notnecessarily be in need of a meal, but may desperately be in need of a warm smile, a feeling of being wanted, and at times just someoneto talk to. We are all blessed in so many areas of our life that we sometimes forget to be grateful for the little things we take for granted,a hot meal, a friend who listens, a warm home and a family who loves us. We are all God’s children living in the same world; we needto help each other out when we can.

May this Lenten season bring us the joy of a closer relationship to our Lord.

Respectfully yours,Maria Papafagos

LIVING WATER

The conclusion of Fr. Matthew Baker’s sermon This is copied from the Orthodox Christian Network (OCN) website.

And just as in the Exodus into the promised land the people of Is-rael brought with them the spoils of Egypt (Ex. 3:21-22), the silver andthe gold gathered in the land of their affliction, so also into this holycity “the kings of the earth shall bring their glory” (Rev. 21:24): “what-ever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, ifthere is anything worthy of praise” (Phil. 4:8) – all things of beautyand genuine creativity which have been made or accomplished withinthe city of man, shall in some way be found in this new Jerusalem, thecity of the living God. The human polis and all that it represents –human history, human culture – is not only judged; it is also cleansedand sanctified, redeemed – if only now “in hope” (Rom. 8:24; cf. 8:25).

“What shall pass from history into eternity?” asked Fr GeorgesFlorovsky, of blessed memory. “The human person with all its relations, such as friendship and love. And in this sense also culture, since a personwithout a concrete cultural face would be a mere fragment of humanity.”

5. Truly, “the stone which the builders rejected has become the cor-nerstone, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Mt. 21:42). Through hissuffering and death at the hands of the city, and through his resurrec-tion, Jesus Christ has not only undone man’s attempt to found a citywithout God; he has also become, in himself, the beginning of a new

polis – a new human community.

The city of Cain was founded upon the blood of Abel, crying outfor vengeance from the ground (Gen. 4:10). But the city we await, thecity of the living God, is founded upon a “blood that speaks more gra-ciously than the blood of Abel” (Heb. 12:22-24), speaking a word, notof vengeance, but forgiveness and resurrection. Cain is avenged sev-enfold; the vengeance of his city is magnified by generation; his de-scendent Lamech is avenged seventy-sevenfold (Gen. 4:24). Entranceto God’s city, Jesus Christ tells us, is bought with mercy, the forgivenessof debts “seventy times seven” (Mt. 18:22; cf. 18: 23-34).

Of this coming city we are citizens, of this blood we partake, whenwe gather together in love in the Eucharist. And though the worlddoes not know it, it is this city that holds the world together, as thesoul holds together the body (Epistle to Diognetus, 6). In the Church’sEucharist, we “taste and see” (Ps. 34:8) already – as in an icon, veiledunder signs – that glorious future the Lord has prepared for his cre-ation. Let us, then, love one another, and seeking that “city which isto come” (Heb 13:14), receive him – with the prayer of the Spirit andthe Bride upon our hearts: “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev. 22:20).
