About us and this catalogue

GLASHÜTTE LIMBURG is part of a group of companies which includes BEGA and BOOM.

These are medium-sized family companies, managed by the same owners. All the companies

in the group manufacture high-quality luminaires, each specialising in its own particular field.

GLASHÜTTE LIMBURG is based in »Limburg an der Lahn«.

Meandering lanes, steep flights of steps and historic half-timbered houses are distinctive features of

Limburg. Its landmark is the Cathedral which stands majestically above the town. Built in 1206,

St. George’s Cathedral is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Rhineland’s late Romantic

period.

Limburg is one of the few towns where the medieval buildings are almost intact. Many half-timbered

houses originating from the 13th to 18th century were restored with great care and appropriately used.

Our trademark bears the town’s name, and underlines our commitment to an exacting approach

towards our architecture and the development of our products.

We specialise in interior luminaires made of glass. Our collection comprises of over 2000 models that

are unique in the world – luminaires for all areas of interior architecture to solve design and lighting tasks

in public and private areas.

We design, develop and construct our products with great care. A team of designers, glass

specialists, design engineers and lighting technicians work together to produce a long-lasting

product of high quality and good design to serve architecture.

At a time of declining product quality and increased mass production, high-quality

workmanship and long-lasting design are an expression of good taste.

This catalogue is a comprehensive overview of our programme.

Our designers have created it to reflect the design, quality and ease of use of our luminaires,

but only the actual products themselves can demonstrate this to perfection.

The good design and constructive quality of our luminaires has received international

recognition for over 40 years.

The luminaire programme is sold through specialised dealers and the electrical trade at

home and abroad.

We have developed and produced luminaires for many areas of interior architecture for over four

decades. The fascination of glass and its countless aspects have inspired our development and

design work.

Being able to consult our own glass production has always been a great advantage in realising new

ideas. The specialist know-how of our glassmakers and mould designers in their traditional crafts

allows us great freedom in our work.

We can design our luminaire glass to meet our own quality and lighting requirements without having

to rely on interchangeable products.

The resulting competence is reflected in the processing of the glass, metal production and

lighting technology. We have developed many of the production processes required by our

products in-house. This know-how and longstanding experience define our daily approach to the

development of new product ideas and new luminaires.

Product and quality

As a building detail, our products are closely connected with architecture. Continuous further

development in this area increasingly requires new lighting solutions. It is our task to recognise

these changes and use the potential they provide when developing new luminaires. The aim of

our products is to help solve lighting tasks.

We supply almost all our luminaires in different sizes, material finishes and with different technical

equipment. This means we can easily meet the most diverse requirements in planning work with

respect to illumination, dimension and material.

Apart from the design and lighting quality of our luminaires, we believe meticulous design and

the intelligent use of all materials are a special priority. Part of our corporate philosophy is to

consider every single detail with the same care as the product as a whole. This produces a

lasting investment that is still timeless in terms of technology and design even decades later.

Materials and surface finishes

Apart from manufacturing glass, an important part of the production process is the manufacture

of metal parts and their surface treatment.

Each metal is treated according to its characteristics so that the surface finish reflects the natural

character of the material. To meet the highest requirements of quality, every part is processed by

hand. We supply the metal parts of our luminaires in different metals or different surface finishes.

The corresponding materials are given on the relevant pages of the catalogue.

The following surface finishes are available: matt and polished stainless steel, matt and polished

aluminium, matt and polished brass, chrome and 24 carat gold. Luminaire parts with these surface

finishes are either manufactured from the corresponding material or galvanised. Information on

luminaire material is given in the luminaire description on the respective page of the catalogue.

We use the term – stainless steel surface finish – for galvanised luminaire parts.

The surface finish – polished chrome – stands for a galvanic process which produces a surface finish

very similar to a chrome surface finish. However, it is a shade darker, and in our opinion, the effect is

all the more exquisite.

Due to the vast number of individual parts, it is not always possible to provide precise details on

all the materials in the catalogue. However, if you need this information for a luminaire, we will be

pleased to give you the exact material specifications.

Apart from metallic surface finishes, many luminaires are also available with enamelled metal surface

finishes e.g. in the colours white RAL 9010, light grey RAL 7035 or white aluminium RAL 9006.

These metal surfaces are primed after pre-treatment, and then covered with high-quality enamel.

Depending on the material of the luminaire parts, we can also supply the luminaires to special order

in other surface finishes and colours. Please use the RAL table for any queries about colour.

Our art of making glass · Three-ply opal glass

Sand – Nature has provided us with sand in inexhaustible abundance.

Glass is molten sand. Pure and natural, it can be returned to nature in its entirety or also recycled as

often as desired.

We do not know exactly when glass was first made. The earliest finds date back to 7000 BC. We

only know that the oldest production of glass was closely connected with pottery. A chance product

created due to the too intense heat in the kilns causing the limey sand and soda to combine as a

coloured glaze on the ceramics. It was only possible to produce glass without the ceramic base in

1500 BC.

The hardness, durability and colour of glass have inspired the creative spirit of man like no other

material. And there is no other material which has been so closely linked to our culture for so long

like glass. Pure and timeless, durable and beautiful, glass has accompanied man through the ages

since time immemorial, and has decisively enriched life.

We have mastered the art of melting high-quality glass from sand and various additives. Our melting

furnaces have a temperature of more than 1500 °C. Due to the aggressiveness of the glass, our

melting tanks last some 3 to 5 years, and are then renewed.

The raw materials react during the melting process and decompose into a molten substance which

is mixed almost completely and degassed. The glass, liquid like honey, flows through a bottom

channel, the throat, from the melting furnace into the working end where it cools down to about

1200 °C and becomes viscous. And now the glassmakers can begin their work.

A speciality of GLASHÜTTE LIMBURG is the three-ply cased opal glass. The first stage in the

production of this valuable glass involves removing the hot viscous glass from the crystal glass

furnace. The post maker plunges his blowing iron with precision about 2 - 3 cm into the glass bath,

and at the same time with turning movements winds a specific quantity of the viscous glass around

the nose of the blowing iron. The blowing iron is withdrawn from the glass bath, separating the first

glass post from the glass bath.

This somewhat shapeless glass mass is evened out around the axis of the blowing iron by turning

and simultaneously pressing down with rotationally symmetrical movements on a roller plate to

ensure that no uneven wall thicknesses are created during later processing. To blow this solid tough

glass mass into a post, air is pressed into the blowing iron and the post maker seals the end of the

iron immediately with his thumb. The warmed air expands but is prevented from escaping, and

presses into the soft workable glass.

The post maker blows a small amount of air into the blowing iron with his mouth and the raw glass expands, reduces

its wall thickness, cools down rapidly to about 600 °C and solidifies. During the cooling period, the blowing iron with

its attached glass post is carried by the post carrier to the adjacent opal glass tank. Here the »caser« takes over the

blowing iron with the post.

He very skillfully plunges the blowing iron with the post again a few centimetres into the opal glass. With constant

rotations, he »winds« the opal glass around the crystal glass post and ensures that the glass is uniformly distributed.

With ever faster rotations, he withdraws the blowing iron from the glass bath, tears off the glass filament and blocks

the cased post in a wet wooden shaping block into a uniformly round shape. During this phase, the glass passes

through a temperature range of 840 °C and tarnishes white. Carefully turning the iron, the post carrier carries it back

with the glass to the crystal glass furnace.

After a brief cooling period, he can hand over the »half-finished glass piece« to the glassmaker who now has to take

the final amount of glass from the tank which is determined by the prescribed shape of the glass. It can range from

2 -15 kg of glass, depending on the size of the glass shape. Too much glass causes problems in wall thickness, too

little glass leads to problems in the stability of the glass product.

Square or asymmetrical shapes require very special precision when the glass is withdrawn.

Once removed, the glass post is blocked again in a much larger wet shaping block, evened out and

accordingly »adjusted« to its final shape. This is the moment where skilful craftsmanship and highest

concentration are required as this process has to be completed in just a few seconds. The hot, still

workable glass is set in an iron mould which is closed and bolted by the mould operating assistant.

At the same time, by pressure of breath or pneumatic air, the glassmaker blows the glass. When

the glass touches the walls of the cast iron mould, it cools down very quickly to about 600 °C and

solidifies. The mould is unbolted and the glass removed still fused to the blowing iron.

To separate the glass from the blowing iron, a few drops of water are trickled onto the link where

glass and metal meet using a wooden stick. The water hisses where the drops fall and chills the hot

glass. Small cracks suddenly appear on the glass surface.

They are sufficient to separate the glass precisely in this area from the blowing iron with one slight

knock. This concludes the manufacturing and forming process of the raw glass.

Recessed luminaires in five sizes. Luminaires with shallow recessed depths and a patented mounting system

– European Patent EP 06 86 806 – for easy and economic installation. The different dimensions and light outputs allow

a host of lighting tasks to be solved.

Recessed wall luminaires to illuminate rooms, stairways and halls – wherever shallow projection, high light output and

robustness are required. Dust-proof and jet-proof luminaires for use in rooms with a high level of dust or in wet rooms

e.g. bathrooms.

The light-diffusing texture on the sides of the crystal glass also distributes the light onto the mounting surface of the

luminaires. This produces an effective, additional level of light, and therefore a distinctly higher level of illumination in the

room. The luminaires for fluorescent lamps TC-TELI are equipped with electronic ballasts. Luminaires for a maximum

wattage of 42 W can also be operated at 32 W or 26 W, and luminaires for 32 W also at 26 W. All important technical

data are given in the instructions for use for these luminaires.

Luminaires with a downlight and additional unshielded

light. This technology provides a high level of visual

Each luminaire has two fluorescent lamps with electronic

Recessed ceiling luminaires in five sizes. The different dimensions of the luminaires can solve a host of lighting tasks.

Perfectly calculated reflectors made of pure aluminium, and the use of modern lamps allow light distribution to be varied

accordingly. Depending on the type of lamp, light distribution can be narrow or wide beam.

The glare from the luminaires is optimally suppressed by the partially frosted inside of the crystal glass. Part of the light

is directed laterally by the thick-walled glass onto the ceiling, and provides additional visual comfort due to horizontal

illuminance.

The perfect mounting system of the luminaires ensures shock-proof installation in suspended ceilings up to a material

thickness of 50 mm.

and a patented mounting system – EP 0686 806 – for easy and economic

installation. The different dimensions and light outputs of the luminaires allow

a host of lighting tasks to be solved with one luminaire series.

Luminaires with broad spread light distribution to illuminate rooms, stairways

and halls – wherever shallow projection, high light output and great robustness

are required.

Dust-proof and jet-proof luminaires for use in rooms with a high level of dust

or in wet rooms, for example bathrooms.

The light-diffusing texture of the crystal glass also directs the light onto the

installation surface of the luminaires, creating an effective, additional level of

light. This produces a distinctly higher level of illumination in the room.

Electrical connection of the luminaires is easy and fast. First, the compact electrical component is connected. The luminaire housing and electrical component are then connected to each other and installed in the ceiling.

Illuminated mirrors

Illuminated mirrors combine luminaire and mirror in a unique way. The impressively large glass body

made of hand-blown opal glass illuminates uniformly the crystal glass mirror in its centre to perfection.

It illuminates the room and its mirror image as a light sculpture. The luminaires for fluorescent lamps

are also suitable for ceiling installation. The mirror catches the area below the luminaire, producing

a fascinating design detail.

Luminaires of protection class IP 44 – created for safe bathrooms, wellness areas and many other

areas of interior design.

If you wish to operate VARIATA luminaires over long periods, we recommend using economical fluorescent lamps.The luminaires can be opened for relamping simply, quickly and without tools.

The design and technology of these luminaires were

based on the concept of directing the light from one

lamp – depending on the lighting task – in different

directions. The luminaire shield can be infinitely

rotated around the longitudinal axis, allowing the

light aperture to be directed either in one direction

or in the opposite direction, or in both directions as

desired (German Patent 44 20 045).

The hand-blown opal glass cylinder of the luminaires

distributes the light softly and uniformly.

To ensure a perfect light effect, the installation

location should be selected with care.

»Variata 1« is available as a wall luminaire with and

without wiring set and plug. If no appropriate power

supply is available, luminaires with wiring set should

be used.

distributed as directed light and as unshielded light.

To create high horizontal illuminance, most of the light

from the downlight is directed downwards.

The other part of the light penetrates the hand-blown

luminaire glass and produces vertical illuminance.

The light directed upwards is redirected by the top

reflector. This creates a particularly soft and uniform

light distribution and optimum glare suppression.

The luminaires are ideal for lighting situations where

uniformity and glare suppression are the highest priority.

Interpretation of a classic. It often appears impossible to improve on a very familiar object but we have

reinterpreted this classic pendant luminaire: modern, simple and equipped with the latest lamp technology.

This series is the continuation of a long tradition.

Luminaires with hand-blown, three-ply opal glass. Highly translucent but opaque glass that distributes

the light uniformly, and this is especially enhanced by the large surface of the luminaire glass.

They are robust and reliable lighting tools that provide perfect light over long periods of operation.

We also supply impact-resistant plastic spheres with a diameter of 250 mm for special applications.

Pendant luminaires with rod suspension and the same technical characteristics are given on page 260.

The luminaires for fluorescent lamps are fitted with electronic ballasts. Luminaires for a maximum wattage

These luminaires are supplied with traditional rod suspension with a diameter of 13 mm.

The large luminaires – sphere diameter 500 mm and 550 mm – have a rod suspension with

a diameter of 16 mm. The 16 mm rod suspension consists of one unit 300 mm in length and

several single units 600 mm in length which are screwed together.

around the luminaire axis. Adjustable light for reading and many areas where the

Functionality and aesthetics are combined in a distinctive way. Stainless steel

and hand-blown, three-ply opal glass are the materials of these light creations.

The luminaires can be adjusted in height and infinitely adjusted around the

lamp axis and the longitudinal axis. The open glass reflector can be perfectly

Due to their limited surface temperatures, luminaires with this symbol are suitable for locations subject to fire hazards caused by dust or fibres (VDE 0710 Part 5).

The ENEC symbol (European Norms Electrical Certification) is a European test and certification symbol for luminaires and electrical components in luminaires. The number 10 with or without VDE symbol indicates that the test/certification symbol was awarded by the VDE test and certification institute.

The CE symbol is issued on the manufacturer’s own responsibility and is not a safety symbol. The manufacturer documents that the directives of the European Union are observed.

Luminaires with this symbol can be fixed to normal inflammable materials(EN 60598/VDE 0711).

The luminaires in this catalogue are designed and manufactured according to the regulations

of EN 60598/VDE 0711. The majority of the luminaires bear corresponding test symbols on

the type plate as well as packing and instructions for use. The remaining luminaires have been

submitted for testing but the test and approval procedure has not yet been completed.

Due to the long period of validity of our catalogue, we are unable to give the current status of

Protection classes

Safety class I distinguishes luminaires with an earth connection.Under faulty conditions, the power supply is cut off by an overload device.

Safety class II distinguishes luminaires that, apart from functional insulation, are provided with additional protective insulation. Under faulty conditions,no dangerous voltage can reach metal parts which can be touched.Many luminaires are available in Safety class I and also in Safety class II. Please enquire accordingly.

Safety class III distinguishes luminaires operating on extra-low safety voltage.They can only be connected to safety transformers according toEN 61558/VDE 0570, EN 61347/VDE 712 or VDE 0100 Part 410.Transformers must be approved for the type of installation.

Luminaires for fluorescent lamps are equipped with low-loss ballasts (LLB)

resp. electronic ballasts (EB) as a standard.

The energy consumption of luminaires with electronic ballasts is distinctly

lower than luminaires with low-loss ballasts.

Fluorescent lamps operated with electronic ballasts have a longer life, are

flicker-free, switch off safely at the end of their life, and are suitable for DC

operation.

Electronic ballasts make a decisive contribution to energy efficiency in

modern lighting systems.

The construction of our luminaires is designed to comply with the

manufacturers’ specifications regarding the life expectancy of the ballasts.

Luminaires with low-loss ballasts, which our factory can supply with fitted

HPF correction capacitors, are marked in the table of contents on pages

308 - 311 by an asterisk (*).

Ballasts · Compensation

Many luminaires in our product range are already equipped with

electronic ballasts as a standard. Luminaires with low-loss ballasts

can be equipped with electronic ballasts on request.

Dimmable luminaires for fluorescent lamps:

analog dimmable 1-10 V or digital dimmable DSI resp. DALI.

The luminaires are wired ready to use for their type of control.

Luminaires for integrating in emergency lighting systems according

to DIN VDE 0108.

Luminaires for connection to a central battery system, with electronic

ballasts, with AC/DC changeover switch, with control module and

additional emergency light lamp holder. Luminaires with integrated

single battery for one or three hours of emergency operation in the

event of a power failure.

Our deliveries are performed solely in accordance with the »General Conditions of Supply and Delivery for Products and Services of the Electrical Industry« of ZVEI (Association of German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers) as amended. In addition, the following conditions of sale and delivery apply:

Quotations – All quotations are subject to change without notice.

Deliveries – Deliveries shall be performed »ex factory« for the account and risk of the purchaser. Risk of breakage shall also be borne by the purchaser. If requested, risk of breakage can be assumed by us to the delivery address and charged separately at 1.5 % of the net value of the goods.

Times of delivery – Times of delivery are only binding if expressly confirmed by us. Contrary to the »General Conditions of Supply and Delivery for Products and Services of the Electrical Industry« (ZVEI), damage clams due to delivery delay are excluded if due to slight negligence only on our part. In the event of violation of material contractual obligations, damage clams shall be limited to predictable damage typical for the contract.

Prices – Prices valid at the time of delivery shall apply. Prices are valid for delivery »ex factory« excluding packing plus turnover tax at the legally valid rate. In the case of wholesaler-to-customer sales, outer packing shall be invoiced.

Payment – Our invoices are payable 30 days after invoicing (invoice date) without deduction. Payment shall be deemed made as soon as we have the amount at our disposal. If a purchaser fails to pay within 30 days of the invoice date, the purchaser shall be in default, also without a reminder having been issued. If the date of receipt or receipt of the invoice itself is uncertain, payment shall be due at the latest 30 days after receipt of the goods. Delay shall occur at the latest as of the 31st day following receipt of the goods.

In the event of default in payment, we shall be authorised to invoice statutory default interest according to § 288 BGB [German Civil Code] in connection with § 247 BGB. This shall not affect our right to assert further damages. Contrary to different payment agreements expressly concluded in individual cases, the clams to which we are entitled shall be due immediately, if circumstances arise for the purchaser which make it no longer reasonable to expect the payment agreements concluded shall be met.

Retention of title – The following shall apply in addition to the ZVEI’s general conditions of supply and delivery:

The purchaser shall be authorised to sell goods we supply subject to retention of title in the ordinary course of business, if the purchaser has not agreed on a prohibition of assignment in this respect with its customer. The purchaser now assigns to us by way of security the claim to the purchase price arising from the sale but remains authorised to collect the claims assigned by way of security unless this authorisation is revoked. Authorisation can be revoked if the purchaser negligently fails to meet or no longer meets its contractual obligations. If collection authorisation is revoked, we shall be authorised to notify the purchaser of the assignment made. The purchaser must make the documents required to assign and collect available immediately. In the event of excess security of more than 20 %, the regulation in III. paragraph 1 sentence 2 of ZVEI’s general conditions of sale and delivery shall apply accordingly.

Design – We reserve the right within the scope customary in the trade to make any modifications required in the shape and construction of our products due to technical progress, provided this is not unreasonable for the purchaser in each individual case.

Warranty – In addition to the regulations in VIII. and XI. of the »General Conditions of Supply and Delivery for Products and Services of the Electrical Industry« (ZVEI) the following terms apply:

In addition to VIII. 3. of the above-mentioned conditions of supply and delivery, notification of any defects regarding quantity as well as any visible defects must be given within 7 days of receipt of the delivery. In addition to VIII. 9., the following shall apply regarding the purchaser’s right of recourse against us: In the event of the purchaser’s customer or the customer’s customer making a claim on the purchaser for subsequent performance, the purchaser must give us the opportunity within an appropriate period of time to make subsequent performance ourselves before procuring »replacement« elsewhere. The purchaser must accordingly impose this obligation on its customer. If the purchaser acts in violation of this obligation, we reserve the right to reduce compensation for expenses to the amount which we would have incurred if we had carried out subsequent performance ourselves. § 443 BGB shall not be affected. Furthermore, compensation for expenses due to the purchaser’s subsequent performance with respect to its customer shall be excluded if the purchaser has failed to justifiably refuse this type of subsequent performance or both types of subsequent performance. In addition, Section XI. of the »General Conditions of Supply and Delivery for Products and Services of the Electrical Industry« shall apply to damage claims.

Liability for services – We assume no liability for consequential damages given any defectiveness with respect to draft lighting plans prepared in the preliminary stages of negotiations and provided by us free of charge. If such drafts become in individual cases a condition or integral part of a delivery or service provided by us, this shall require express written agreement.

Use for the intended purpose – According to the Law on the Safety of Appliances and Products, luminaires are technical products and must be used only for their intended purpose. The use of luminaires and accessories other than for their intended purpose and any unauthorised alterations to our luminaires without our express written consent shall release us from any obligation in the event of a claim.

Returns – Returns that are not made subject to the purchaser’s right of withdrawal within the scope of warranty rights shall only be credited with our prior agreement. We shall credit 80 % of the calculated price for undamaged goods in their original packing. Any reconditioning and packing costs as well as transport costs incurred by us shall be deducted in addition and without special notification. Special orders and special electrical productions cannot be returned.

Disposal – Ordering parties which are not private individuals undertake to guarantee the disposal of the products supplied according to the provisions of the »Law on Electrical and Electronic Equipment – ElektroG«. In the case of resale, the ordering party transfers this obligation to its contracting partner.

Exports – The delivery of our products and the submission of quotations thereon to countries outside the European Union – also through third parties – shall require our prior written consent.

Miscellaneous – Place of performance and legal venue is Limburg.

All contractual relations shall be governed by German law.
