January 9 - March 25, 2017 Glass Masters of Venice Featuring La Famiglia Salvadore Richard and Barbara Basch Gallery in the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center, Ringling College of Art and Design Richard & Barbara Basch began collecting Glass Art in 1993. Initially, they focused on American artists. They soon began to include artists from around the world. This year’s exhibition features the work of Murano glass master Davide Salvadore and his sons Marco and Mattia. It also includes works by Lino Tagliapietra from the Basch Collection. Davide Salvadore was born in Murano in 1953. A descendent of a family of glassworkers, he has always lived and worked on the Venetian island. At a young age he began working with his grandfather Antonio who taught him how to build kilns. Soon after he began working with the noted Italian artist Alfredo Barbini, and four years later joined Loredano Rosin and his team. He also worked with the Venini and Barovier & Toso glass studios. In 1978, he began producing lampworked beads for his mother Anna Mantoan's jewelry studios. This led to a series of collaborations with fashion and design houses such as Roberta di Camerino, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Swatch. In 1987, Salvadore founded the studio “Campagnol e Salvadore” which he still manages today with two partners. At the studio Davide works as glass master - using kilns he built himself - combining lampwork and furnace techniques in innovative ways. He also produces work for prestigious Murano glass studios such as Nason & Moretti, Vincenzo Nason, and La Murrina, as well as for the Istituto Statale d'Arte di Venezia, and collaborates with artists and designers such as Andrea Anastasio, Giorgio Vigna, Florys Meydam, Frank Borst, and Massimo Nordio. Studio Salvadore is a collaborative glass production team headed by Davide’s sons Mattia and Marco, who began working with their father in the studio Campanol & Salvadore as young boys. In 2003, Mattia Salvadore assisted Pino Signoretto, Franco Toffolo, and Dante Marioni at the international workshop organized by Centro Studio Vetro, founded in 1997 to cultivate and promote the art of glass. Mattia Salvadore studied with a variety of Muranese masters, attended the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington and worked at the renowned Venini glass factory. Lino Tagliapietra was born in Murano, Italy in 1934. At the age of 12 he began an apprenticeship with Archimede Seguso and by the age of 21, he had earned the title of maestro. Over the next twenty-five years Tagliapietra worked with several of the best known Muranese glass factories. In 1979, he came to the United States to teach at Pilchuck School in Seattle, thus beginning a long history of sharing his centuries-old techniques with American glass artists. In the 1980s, Tagliapietra became known for his collaborative work with Dale Chihuly and Dan Dailey. Paid for in part by Sarasota County Tourist Tax Revenues Sponsored in part by WSMR 89.1
