GlaxoSmithKline Oncology is committed to working in partnership with academia to develop and support expertise in oncology in the UK. As part of that commitment GSK will provide an annual full-time 4-year UK-based CASE PhD Scholarship in the field of oncology/haematology.

The aim of the GSK Oncology CASE PhD Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for academic collaboration and a first class training experience in an industrial environment within the setting of GSK Oncology R&D.

The first scholarship will commence in October 2012.

PhD supervisors are invited to submit proposals in the following areas:

• Cancer epigenetics • Tumour metabolism • Cancer stem cell pathways • Unfolded protein response • Protein degradation pathways • Cancer cell surface antigens

The proposal submission form can be downloaded at www.gsk.com/careers/uk-sponsor-oncology.htm

The completed form should then submitted by email to [email protected] by September 9th 2011.

Proposals will be reviewed by GSK R&D in the first instance and subsequently evaluated by an independent panel of leading UK oncology experts.

Up to five applicants will be shortlisted and invited to present their proposals to the panel on 30th November 2011 where the successful candidate will be selected.

The student will be a scientist or oncology/haematology healthcare professional (registrar level and above) and they will need to meet the studentship eligibility criteria set out by the UK Research Council. The scholarship will cover a PhD stipend and consumables but not a registrar salary. In addition it will provide the opportunity for the student to spend at least 3 months at the GSK oncology research laboratories in Pennsylvania, USA.
