G LEBE MATTERS
Principal’s Message
Dear Glebe Community
It has been another busy and productive week of learning at Glebe Public School!
International Women's Day
This Sunday is International Women's Day. This is a global day celebrating the social,
economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is a day where attention is
drawn to the fact that women from all over the world, including Australia, still do not
have equality. This week our students learnt about the challenges still faced by women
and what we can all do to support gender equality. I was incredibly proud of how our
senior students promoted this day and raised awareness within our school and
community.
Playground Markings
We are excited to announce that our new playground markings are scheduled to be
installed next Tuesday. These are going to really brighten up our playground and
provide additional opportunities for our students to interact and be engaged during
play times. Due to the
number of markings that are to be installed, we may need to follow our wet weather
procedures on this day so the installers can undertake the works. We will advise on the
day if this is the case.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Update
Glebe PS is well on our journey in being a PBL school. Positive Behaviour for Learning
(PBL) is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and
behaviour and is a process that supports school leadership teams to create positive
learning environments that enable student learning and wellbeing. At the end of 2019
we collected our staff informed base line data and next Tuesday, the Glebe PBL team
will present this information to our staff and begin the process of looking at our next
steps and future directions. As PBL is underpinned by the support and commitment of
the whole school community, we will have a parent information session next term, I
encourage you all to attend.
Student Attendance
As a school, we closely monitor student attendance inline
with Departmental policies and procedures. This includes
students who are late or leave early for unjustified reasons.
Please refer to the compulsory school attendance
information included in this weeks edition of Glebe
Matters.
Have a lovely weekend!

RFF = Relief from Face to Face is time
for our teachers to organise and plan
for their class and stage. Ms Callen
and Mr Wilkins take classes for library
and music at these times.
Our support programs target literacy
and numeracy by withdrawing
children and engaging in smaller
activities. Ms Hough, Ms Michael, Ms
Watt and Miss West support class
teachers during this time.
Well done to our hard working students so far this term! It’s been a positive start!
At Glebe we love to help
and promote great
reading for
comprehending. Phonics is
a method for teaching
reading and
writing in English language
by developing the
student’s phonemic
awareness and the ability
to hear, identify and
manipulate phenomes.
This week we have commenced
our literacy groups. Our small
support groups are helping our
students correspond between
sounds, and spelling patterns
(graphemes) that represent
them. They are building
confidence and enjoying the
encouraging space of a
smaller group.

Stage 1
Year 1 and 2 students read
the story “Just Another
ordinary Day” by Rod
Clement. This story uses
ordinary text to tell a day in
the life of a young girl but
the pictures tell a much
more interesting story, with
lions, pirate ships and aliens
all part of the school day!
Stage 1 enjoyed writing
about their own day and
using their visual literacy
skills to enhance their
story.
Stage 2 & 3
We have been working on
developing a character this
week. First, students created
a profile of a main
character for a narrative
and then worked with a
peer to further develop the
personality traits, actions,
appearance, and growth of
their character. Year 5 and
6 students expertly took the
hotseat as their character
and answered our questions
about their motivation and
personality.
Thank you to all the students in
my writing groups for working so
hard on improving their work
and showing dedication to their
learning goals.
Ms Hough
This week in writing, students have been working on the building blocks of structure and
language to write narratives.

This week all classes have been introduced
to the Premier’s Reading Challenge Student
Website
and encouraged to borrow books from the
PRC booklist. The challenge is open until Friday
28th August.
L IBRARY with Ms Callen
The challenge is not a competition, but a
way to foster a love of reading for pleasure in
students from
Kindergarten to Year 9.
Students who wish to participate can access
the Premier’s Reading Challenge student
website with the username and password
they use at school. K-2 will have their details
sent home in their homework books.
Students can search the website for books
that are included in the challenge and
record the books they read on their online
reading records. The number of books
students are required to read are listed in the
table below. Students in K-2 can have the
books to read to them.

The PBL Team has been meeting regularly on Friday mornings to
work on setting the foundations for a strong wellbeing program
across the school. We are now at the point where we need to
engage parents and the community to help us with the direction
we are taking.
If you are interested in assisting the PBL team, are not already on the P&C and have limited time to
contribute to our school - we would love for you to complete the below. Please return the slip to the
school office and we will be in contact soon about tasks that can be completed that take small
snippets of time and within short time frames from the confines of your home or work office space

congratulations to: Luci, Brooklyn, Svanik, Ryan, Huw, James, Scarlet, Alexa,
