Titans Fall to Rolling Meadows
The Titans football team lost to Rolling Meadows Friday, 31-14, but the team showed progress and
played hard.
The Titans fell into a 14-0 hole but climbed back and made it a game against an elite state talent.
“I don’t know if that was happening last year and that was a good offense we were facing so those
are wins,” head coach Dave Schoenwetter told the Glenview Lantern. “I thought our team on
defense ran to ball terrifically, I thought they were there, they hit hard against a team that had good
athletes.”
The Titans defense started the game strong against the Mustangs forcing a three-and-out, but an
illegal substitution when Rolling Meadows prepared to punt extended the drive and the Mustangs
went on to score on a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Rolling Meadows added another score on a 69-yard pass with 3:57 left in the first quarter before the defense started to put together more three-and-outs and fought strong, limiting the Mustangs on
early drive to red zone. Connor Weisensel had an interception in the second quarter, which led to a
Titans score.
The Titans defense broke down when the Mustangs scored a late touchdown in the first half on a 27-
yard touchdown pass and a late 3-yard touchdown run that resulted from a muffed GBS punt.
“We kept them working for first downs or forced them into three-and-outs,” Schoenwetter said. “I
think that compared to last year, I see a big jump of what the defense was able to do.”
South’s offense failed to gain any momentum for much of the game — the Titans ended the game with six three-and-outs. Senior running back Andrew Gall provided a highlight with a 48-yard run in
the first quarter but the offense didn’t get any points off the run that ended in Rolling Meadows’ red
zone.
The Titans’ other score came on the first drive of the second half when the team drove down the field and Aidan Prikos scored on a 2-yard run. Gall finished the game with 65 rushing yards and a
touchdown.
Schoenwetter couldn’t get the passing game going with the constant pressure from the Mustangs’
line and secondary, limiting what his offense could do.
“I thought we didn’t string together good series and we need to find a way to be more consistent,”
Schoenwetter said.
The defense will take pride in what it limited from Rolling Meadows while the offense will go back to
the drawing board. South’s second game of the season will be a trip to Des Paines as the Titans take on Maine West on Sept. 6, and while the Titans might not be happy with the loss, they can see the
progress made in an opening-night loss.
“There’s a lot of room for improvement.” Gall said. “I think we played pretty well even though the
scoreboard didn’t say that.”
