Dates to Remember
Dear parents,
Recent Fires and Air Quality – The recent fires have caused problems with respect to the quality of air in our state. It has been interesting to note that at Glendenning we’ve had some days when we’ve needed to confine the students to their rooms, whilst in other areas, such as Penrith, it appeared that there was no smoke/pollution but it was essentially the same air! As a school, we base our decisions on the advice provided by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment available at https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/aqms/aqitable.htm. We do this, because it is simply not a matter of ‘smelling’ or ‘looking’ at the air – there are sophisticated devices needed to measure air quality. Today I visited rooms to check on maintenance matters and noted that whilst there was bound to be some trace of smoke in rooms (but none I smelt), teacher use of deodorisers, air con use and so on may well be ‘masking’ any trace of smoke.
We have – and will, when necessary – take the precaution of gathering all early arrivers in the library and then send them to rooms at 8.30am – whenever there are warnings about air quality. Once this process is in place, our normal routines apply in that:
• All asthmatics are reminded about their ‘puffers’ • All students – but especially any with breathing or lung problems, are monitored by teachers • Doors and windows are kept shut, air cons are kept on • Any student showing illness (of any kind) will be sent to the sick bay OR a school leader will visit the room
to provide further advice • Parents will be contacted when it is considered necessary • When parents are uncontactable and if a child continues experiencing breathing difficulties, first aid MAY
be given or an ambulance called • It is a parent’s right to decide to either visit and take their child home or keep their child at home for the
day (all school staff have been instructed that they are not to advise parents in this respect). • In the event of the students’ safety in rooms being put at risk because of problems with air quality, I will
contact the Director, School Leadership and our representative in the Occupational Health and Safety Directorate to provide advice. Parents will be kept informed.
Yours faithfully,
Doug Meaney

Salvation army –
ChriStmaS hamper Drive
Here at Glendenning Public School, some of the students are working together to organise a Christmas Hamper Drive for the Salvation Army. As a school community we would like to work together and show our support for others in need. Why: To help people who are in need of essential items and to bring joy to families in need over the festive period. When: Monday Week 5 until Friday of Week 8. Students and families are invited to bring items to school every day and place these into their classroom collection boxes after 9am. How you can support: Every classroom is going to have a box where donations will be collected. Anytime from now until Friday of Week 8, non-perishable items will be collected. These items may include tinned food, packaged drinks, packaged foods, toiletries, nappies and baby items, household items and snack foods. All items that are able to be kept without refrigeration will be accepted and very much appreciated. The students leading this project will turn your generous donations into a number of hampers. The more donations we receive, the more hampers we will be able to put together for those in need. The hampers will be presented to a member of The Salvation Army during the Monday Morning Assembly on Monday, 16th December at 9am. All parents are welcome to attend.
We WoulD like to thank you in aDvanCe for
your Support anD generoSity.
Remembrance Day Ceremony
On Monday the 11th of November, our school came together for our Remembrance Day ceremony.
On this day we were lucky enough to be joined by Flight Lieutenant James Brennan from the Royal Australian Air Force base in Richmond.
Prior to the ceremony, our current SRC members held a morning tea for our visitor where they had the opportunity to ask questions about leadership and serving our country. Our SRC members were, as always, exemplary representatives of our school and we are very proud of the way they conducted themselves.
Thank you to Flight Lieutenant James Brennan and Director of Educational Leadership Karen Smith for attending our ceremony as well as to those parents and community members who did also.
Playgroup Update What a busy term we have had a playgroup!
